OS X :: Viewing Partially Overwritten Video File
May 10, 2009
I've got a video file which was deleted and partially overwritten by other files. It's about 100MB but there's only ~2MB or so that's been overwritten. Data Rescue 2 didn't recover it, but testdisk did (testdisk seems to be able to recover files that are partially overwritten, so the headers of the file must be intact.) Now that I've recovered the movie, it won't play. Is there any software out there that can play corrupted video files? Is there any way of recovering parts of the video file?

I accidentally overwrote a TIFF file, downsizing the original to 900x600. Through back-up all copies on the two back-up drives are equally overwritten. I have not set up time machine, so going back the timeline is not an option. Is it possible to restore the overwritten file without the help of a professional recovery service?

I have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.

I just installed a Blu-Ray burner this weekend and authored some Blu-Rays discs from some of my home movies. Anyway, they play fine on the TV but how do I play them on the Mac? (I couldn't get the MakeMKV/VLC solution to work.)

Wanting to watch video lectures on my iPod at 1.5-2x speed. It's great on my laptop w/QT, but impossible on the iPod. So, I need to take the original video, speed it up (shorten it), and save it for viewing on the iPod - is there functionality in QT Pro or iMovie. If not, a preferably free third party app?

I've ordered my first Mac: MBA.
I am currently using a Windows 7 machine with the latest iTunes build.
My iTunes library is located and synced to the cloud with Dropbox. I also sync my iPhone with this iTunes library, this will be essential with both computers.
Now, when I get my MBA, I plan to first do a complete reinstallation, removing unrequired software and drivers as well as eradicate unused languages.
I then plan to setup iTunes.

I have two disks I have been working with one on my MacBook Pro (HFS+) and one connected to a Linux machine (FAT - this is an external hard drive). Recently I started exploring backing up my files with rsync over an ssh from my Mac to the external hard drive connected to the Linux machine. I did this once successfully and ported all of my Mac files to the external. However, I did something incorrectly the second time and I believe I may have done rsync in the wrong direction and it has overwritten some files on my Mac (configuration files for iCal that had events stored, an iPhone program I've been working on). The full rsync command I used was the following:
Code:
rsync -avz -e ssh linux@linuxuser:/media/external/Users /Users
However, I was under the impression rsync wouldn't touch files that are timestamped at a newer date so even if it was copying from the linux external to the mac hard drive why would it overwrite newer files??
I have recently downloaded scalpel to try to see if I could find these files but every time I run
Code:
./scalpel /dev/disk0s2 -o recovery/
I get the error
Code:
ERROR: You have attempted to use a non-empty output directory. In order
to maintain forensic soundness, this is not allowed.
Aborting.
recovery/ is a directory I created solely for the purpose to scalpel and is empty.
If there is anyone out there who has any ideas that might lead me down the path to recovering some of these overwritten files I would be eternally grateful (especially the iPhone program which I've been working on for 3 months).

I use the Date Added column all the time in my iTunes, so I can see what was added last. Well, I just noticed that most of the 10,000 songs in my library have at some point lost the original 'date added' they used to have. Now, the earliest date is sometime in February of 2010. And some have been set to just a few days ago. How did this happen? Is this a bug of iTunes 10? I only just noticed this, so I'm not sure when it happened.

I recently got my own version of windows 7 from my school for free and decided to give parallels a shot. A little after installing parallels and giving my windows key, I decided I would rather do boot camp and "upgrade" the partition to run in parallels if i needed to. I started the boot camp installation but when it got to asking me for the Windows 7 key, it said the key was invalid now. Is there any way of getting the key back?

I could not find any recent helpful answers via Google, but eventually discovered, by trial and error, that you need to delete the failed downloads in three places namely: /Library/Updates (this is probably unnecessary)
and the *two* files here:- /private/var/folders/<complicated long path>/<name> where <name> ends in .pkg and also in .pkg.resumeData (i.e. the "same name" twice)
I found out where these were being saved by (*immediately* after the update-failure), typing find /private/var/folders -newerct "1 minute ago" -name "*.resumeData" and sure enough, these corresponded to the failed downloads. I removed them with sudo rm /private/var/folders/<complicated long path discovered via find/<name>.pgk sudo rm /private/var/folders/<complicated long path discovered via find/<name>.pgk.resumeData
and then the software update started working again instead of always aborting with e.g. "iTunes: partially downloaded" etc. The reason for the original failure is my poor internet service that constantly breaks halfway through any long-ish downloads.
An example of the actual filepath on my 10.6.8 Mac OSX is:
/private/var/folders/02/027LjtRMGXSZNggzpqLQg++++TI/-Caches-/com.apple.SoftwareU pdate/swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/<same amount again in length>
in other words, really long winded and very difficult to find (I have been trying to do this all day and could not find anything via the www) - I hope it helps you!

I just purchased garageband '11 on my MacBookPro, and as such it was available for me to download to my iMac. On my MacBookPro the additional loops installed perfectly by choosing a loop that wasn't installed and following the prompts. However this didn't work on the Mac.
When I clicked on a loop that wasn't present, it gave me the same prompt, but when the Software Update runs, it reports that all software is upto date. Then when you go back to choose a loop that's greyed out in Garageband, it says that the process to download has been initiated and to check the status in the software updater! Kind of a circular loop.

I connected my windows removable disk to my colleague's mac to transfer some data. Accidentally her system started a time machine backup on my removable disk. Although we stopped it during middle of the process, now my disk is no longer recognizable in windows and all I can see under a mac system is her backup file.
The process took a very short time. I wonder if it has deleted everything. Is there any chance I can get the overwritten data back? They are very important to me.
Besides, is it a common problem of time machine backup? It is too dangerous for the removable disks.

I have 30GB of music on my external drives at home and 60GB of music on my laptop. I wanted to make an itunes library with the music from my laptop for when I travel without external HDD. I exported my itunes library and saved the .xml in a personal folder.(I didn't know that I needed the .itl file too before this crap happened. Why did Apple programmers need to make it so complicated and why doesn't it also export the current .itl file along with the .xml when you "export library"!?)
I then quit itunes and opened the exported .xml file using itunes. l went and deleted my the songs in my itunes library containing music from both drives and imported all the music from my user itunes library.
I did that so I would have all the songs and only the songs from my laptop. However, iTunes must have written a new .itl when I exited from my itunes from my new library. Now when I open the my original .xml itunes library with itunes all of the playlists are blank and the ratings/import dates are missing too! Is there any way I can recover this data? I went to user/itunes/PreviousiTunesLibraries and I was able to recover a .itl from a year ago but much has changed in my itunes library since then.
Is there somewhere(even in the cache) where previous .itl would be stored even for a short time?(I haven't rebooted since this happened) Are .itl files backed up somewhere else besides /previous itunes libraries?

Three times in the last week iTunes (10.6.1) is missing coverart for about 30 of 300 movies. This is also happening with music artwork. The artwork can be individually repopulated using "Get Info" but this is really just a bandaid and I would like to know if anyone knows why this is happening and how to fix the root cause.

So here's something that's been on my mind for a while, but never figured it was worth while asking...anybody. But with Snow Leopard coming out tomorrow which feature Expose in the dock now thought i'd ask. I'm sure to some degree this question boils over as your personal productivity preference because i'm wondering what sizes your windows are normally at. For example, say you use Safari or Firefox; is that window taking up the whole screen? If so, why? Ever really think about it? Do you have it full screen cause you wanna surf the web and do your research or procrastinate at the biggest possible size available ...or.... is your Safari/Firefox window not fully screened, simply because you normally have more than just one Firefox or Safari window open, and it makes it easier to navigate multiple windows when they ain't taking up the whole screen?
For example, iTunes for me is possibly the only window I ever fully enjoy being full screen. I love cover flow so have a "space" (3) devoted to iTunes in full screen. In Space 2 (of 6) I have FireFox in full screen but many time throughout the day hate that it's full screen cause I easily need to navigate back to something else, such as the finder or w/e. Anyways, i'm really wondering what others do here, I think it'll be interesting to hear what's up. With SL coming out tomorrow i'm sure Expose in the dock will help big time, but nevertheless.

I have a problem with a .wmv file. When I play it in QuickTime or VLC, I hear audio only, but no video. I have the latest Flip4Mac plugin and have no problems playing other .wmv files. The first time I played the file in QuickTime, as was directed to the Apple QuickTime components web site
[URL]) because "Additional software is required by QuickTime to playback this media...". But I see no plugin on that web site that would be applicable.
I would be grateful for any ideas as I want to purchase educational videos from this vendor, but can not if their files won't work on a Mac.

I want to know if there is way to take Video TS files and convert them straight into a .DV file so they can be edited in iMovie.
My situation is that I use a program like Mac the Ripper to extract a DVD into the Audio and Video TS folders. My step 2 is to use Handbrake to convert it to MPEG and then MPEG-Streamclip to convert it to .DV
The problem I am having is that while this process works, the final product video quality is slightly off. I know that the loss is either in Handbrake or the MPEG-Streamclip program. How can I go straight to DV, either through a program or straight from the DVD?
