My keyboard has suddenly started doing weird things, such as the left shift button types an uppercase 'r', the 'r' key will only type as uppercase, and the right shift key takes me to the overlay screen with post-it notes and the calculator. Any ideas besides taking it to the mac store? And any idea on how much they typically charge to fix things like this?
View 1 RepliesMy left shift key types in "W", i started having this problem out of nowhere. at first some keys such as h would not work, and others such as y would type in y and u together. I restarted my computer and it seemed to have fixed it, also changed the usb port (its not a wireless keyboard). so now some keys dont work with either shift being held and other problems. is it my keyboard? or some settings? i've already reset the keyboard settings to default?

I have installed Windows XP on my Macbook Pro with no issues, however on my iMac everything seems to work except for a few issues with the keyboard. For some reason, when I press the quote button I get the funny symbol of an uppercase E with a line above it instead. (ȩ The same thing happens with other symbols such as the question mark and square brackets.
Is this just a simple keyboard mapping problem or were some drivers not properly installedɍ
All of a sudden my left shift key is not working. It doesn't work in any application, not just safari.

I have a 2007 macbook. Whenever I try my email address or password, I hit the left shift key, it produces the letter R. When I hit the right shift key, it brings up a window with the widgets? Weather and other items.

View 6 Replies View RelatedLast night a friend of mine spilt a very small amount of soda onto my macbook. I immediately wiped it off and powered down the computer. Today, when I turned the computer back on, everything works fine, however, a few of the keys are sticky (the space bar, arrow keys, shift button, and 2 others). Is there anyway to remove these keys to try to clean them? This is the current generation Macbook.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't type a capital w (i.e. "W") by holding down my left shift and the "w" key.
If I hold down the right shift key, it works fine. Lower case w works fine. Any other capital letter using the left shift also works.
So it's only the left shift and "w" combination that seems not to work.
Bizarro world, but VERY frustrating.
I borrowed another apple keyboard and the same thing happens - so it would appear to be a software problem.
When we upgraded to 10.5 and got the new iMac (I don't know which one caused the problem) I noticed that the Command, control, alt, and shift button all act like caps lock. I use those buttons all the time, and if I accidentally press one and have no idea what it is, I am stuck trying to figure out what to do.

View 8 Replies View RelatedIt feels like there is less room for the left button to press down and the right button clicks loudly when I press down on it. Everything still woks in terms of clicking but it's so annoying to have to press down harder than I have to.

I need a new mouse for maya as the cheap heavy wireless logitech im using is giving me serious wrist pain and trouble. Maya is heavily reliant on the third mouse button and i wondered if there are any out there? Initial seraching has brought back nothing. Failing this can anyone recommend a really comfortable (CORDED - i hate wireless) mouse suitable for use up to 10 hours a day.
View 10 Replies View RelatedRunning OS X 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro that's roughly 2 years old (maybe a little more). About a week ago I noticed that I was unable to copy/paste/undo/cut. Thought it was a total command key failure at first but other shortcut functionality is intact (cmd+t/cmd+w etc). So I've isolated the problem to the left cmd key and the bottom row of my keyboard. Separately they work just fine, but they refuse to work together.

For some reason the function keys on my mac book changed, I restored them and now the shift keys have the function of showing the desktop and all windows.
I there a way I can restore the original function?
Why does the red button in windows' top left corner have different functionality in different programs? For instance in Messages, it closes the window but leaves the program running. In Reminders, however, it closes the window and the program and the same happens, for instance, in Disk Utility.
I am surprised that OS X-specific programs behave differently like this.

So, here's the story. I turned on my imac one day, and i tried to launch safari by clicking the left button ( primary button ) and it launched expose (which is configured or the middle button) so i kept clicking and clicking i tried the right button ( secondary ) and it also launched expose. By this time i am getting fusterated. My side button still works and launches spaces but left, right and middle only do what the middle button is configured too. I have tried taking out the batteries putting new ones in , and disconnecting it from bluetooth.

While working in Excel 2011, I encounter the error "Some chart types cannot be combined with other chart types. Please select a different chart type." I am highlighting 46 cells to create a marked line graph. There are no other charts in the file. I called Microsoft support who told me they had not heard of this problem in Excel (only in PowerPoint). I also took it to an Apple Store Genius, who was unable to solve the problem, which is understandable, given that he does not work for Microsoft.
I have recopied the data to a new spreadsheet, re-typed all the data to a new spreadsheet, and deleted plist files. When I sent it to a different computer (which was running Excel 2011 and Snow Leopard), I could make the figure but I cannot edit the figure or add data on my laptop.

So a few days ago I spilt tea on my MBP. When I opened it back up everything seemed to be in working condition, however a few of my keys were sticky. So, yesterday I took them off and started cleaning. That's when things went down hill.
Now, my keyboard will type two letters at the same time. For example, when I press "r" it will type "ry". It does this for the whole row. The Dashboard key brightens the screen and brings up the dashboard. 4 types 46. f types fh. v types vn. And space doesn't space.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHaving been a mac owner for a few years now, I guess it actually shows the quality of the product that this is the first time I've had to post on this site.I've recently upgraded from my 2008 model MacBook to an early 2011 model MacBook Pro 17" with Lion. This machine was brand new when I purchased it, and is a very lovely bit of kit.
The problem comes from the sleep functionality. Approximately one time of three, when I resume from sleep, the keyboard will be malfunctioning. What I mean by this is that when I type letters, they come out as symbols instead. I haven't been sharp enough to get a direct mapping of A-Z yet (I will do next time), but these aren't the 'ALT' key symbols, they're more like this (which is what I typed into Notepad last time this happened)In order to resolve this, I need to restart the computer, which, thus far, has resolved the issue every time. That said, it's a bit of a pain, so would like to know what's going on and if there is any way to prevent it.
All the software on the mac is up to date at time of writing, there have been no expansions to the machine (yet), so it's exactly as shipped. It's the 2.2GHz i7 Quad Core device, and is the first one supporting the thunderbolt graphics connector. Could it be a hardware problem (if so, I want to return it asap to get it sorted).

for Christmas I got my moms old macbook. It was some things that were wrong with it but she took it to get fixed at apple for like 500$ so Im sure she doesn't have warranty. The other day I was typing a report and it kept typing in capitals when I didn't have the caps lock on...I figured out that it was something with the shift key. I took it off, and that still didnt work. I haven't spilled anything on it at all. I take very good care of it also. Now I can't en log in because my password has numbers which only turn into symbols.

He had problems last year and the top case and motherboard were replaced in early 2011; Recently his battery would not hold a charge and his hard drive failed. I replaced both and added more ram to speed it up - now at 8 GB)The right shift key does not work. I have checked universal access; speech-to-text features are off; checked keyboard - English is chosen; checked keyboard, shift key is not assigned to any function;Left shift key does work. Right shift key does work on an attached Logitech wireless keyboard. The key seems to press down okay, just will not capitalize any letters.

if caps lock is off, shift of course makes the letter you hit capital. However, if caps lock is on, and you hit shift, the letter is capital, not lowercase. In Windows it would be lowercase. Is my MacBook acting how is should?
