Apr 9, 2009For some reason the function keys on my mac book changed, I restored them and now the shift keys have the function of showing the desktop and all windows.
I there a way I can restore the original function?

Jun 19, 2014I have a 2007 macbook. Whenever I try my email address or password, I hit the left shift key, it produces the letter R. When I hit the right shift key, it brings up a window with the widgets? Weather and other items.

Nov 28, 2010My keyboard has suddenly started doing weird things, such as the left shift button types an uppercase 'r', the 'r' key will only type as uppercase, and the right shift key takes me to the overlay screen with post-it notes and the calculator. Any ideas besides taking it to the mac store? And any idea on how much they typically charge to fix things like this?

Jan 23, 2009I can't type a capital w (i.e. "W") by holding down my left shift and the "w" key.
If I hold down the right shift key, it works fine. Lower case w works fine. Any other capital letter using the left shift also works.
So it's only the left shift and "w" combination that seems not to work.
Bizarro world, but VERY frustrating.
I borrowed another apple keyboard and the same thing happens - so it would appear to be a software problem.
MacBook Pro :: External Keyboard Shift Not Working?
Sep 1, 2014I'm using a MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012 (no Retina) with an external keyboard (Apple A1243 USB). I was using Mountain Lion.
One month ago I was suffering a problem that both shift keys of my external keyboard were not working properly. Only if I press both shift keys simultaneously they worked. But, also other keys were activated (e.g. "e" and "r" or "5" and "6" on the number block). The keyboard works fine on differnet computers.
Only a full system recovery solved the problems, meaning this is a software problem.Â
Today, I'm facing the same problem again and don't want to do the recovery again.
I tryed this steps: One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond
I also updated to maverick, without succes.Â

Jan 1, 2010Recently I was cleaning my Unibody MacBook with an alcohol based cleaning product.I was cleaning my Keyboard, upon after about 30 minutes later my shift key stopped working.It appears some of the cleaning product has gotten itself under the keyboard?About 2 hours after, the shift key started working again, but later my F1, 1, Q,A,Z and F11, F12 and Delete keys stopped working?After this I unplugged the machine and put it on the radiator� Too late? � Perhaps�.Today I powered it on again but still the same keys stopped working, though the shift key still works.I've connected an external keyboard to type this up. I bought this machine about November 2008 with only the basic warranty.

May 29, 2012My left shift key types in "W", i started having this problem out of nowhere. at first some keys such as h would not work, and others such as y would type in y and u together. I restarted my computer and it seemed to have fixed it, also changed the usb port (its not a wireless keyboard). so now some keys dont work with either shift being held and other problems. is it my keyboard? or some settings? i've already reset the keyboard settings to default?

Sep 26, 2009I don't know what I've done, but whenever I hit the shift key on my keyboard, all my open windows minimize. Hence I have to use caps lock to type any letters in caps, and can't use the shift key for things like exclamation marks and question marks.

The left fan has stopped working so now the left side of the laptop is considerably hotter than the right. I'm from the UK and so is the laptop but I'm traveling around the US at the moment so I was just gonna take it into the next Apple Store I come across.
Also, if I do take it in, what are the chances they'd charge me to fix it? My applecare expired, typically, about 2 months ago.
MacBook Pro :: Left And Right Cursor Keys Not Working
Jun 21, 2012My trusty four year old (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) macbook pro has, all of a sudden, decided it doesn't want to let me use the left and right cursor keys any more. All the other keys work (including up and down) but the left and right ones don't, even when combined with modifier keys (e.g. Ctrl+<right> should but doesn't navigate across to a second pane in lion). Is it hardware or software problem. Seems odd from a hardware point of view that exactly 2 keys would fail simultaneously.
From a software point of view: I haven't installed anything new lately and I've closed down all the applications running on osx with no luck. Is there some way I can diagnose whether this is hardware or software? Can I boot to a command prompt and test it there? does osx lion include an on-screen keyboard that shows each key being hit? I suppose I could install a keylogger but that might not be conclusive.

The problem is that when i connect it to right USB port it works flawlessly, but when i connect it to my left USB port - my macbook pro recognizes the device but it doesn't send any midi data - to put it in other way: it is not working.
I have checked, everything is working fine In the LEFT usb port( wireless mouse, external HDD, Flash drives, Iphone) except my MIDI Keyboard.

Aug 26, 2010Running OS X 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro that's roughly 2 years old (maybe a little more). About a week ago I noticed that I was unable to copy/paste/undo/cut. Thought it was a total command key failure at first but other shortcut functionality is intact (cmd+t/cmd+w etc). So I've isolated the problem to the left cmd key and the bottom row of my keyboard. Separately they work just fine, but they refuse to work together.

Hardware :: Mighty Mouse Not Working / Left Button Is Launching Expose
Jul 21, 2009So, here's the story. I turned on my imac one day, and i tried to launch safari by clicking the left button ( primary button ) and it launched expose (which is configured or the middle button) so i kept clicking and clicking i tried the right button ( secondary ) and it also launched expose. By this time i am getting fusterated. My side button still works and launches spaces but left, right and middle only do what the middle button is configured too. I have tried taking out the batteries putting new ones in , and disconnecting it from bluetooth.

Mar 20, 2012for Christmas I got my moms old macbook. It was some things that were wrong with it but she took it to get fixed at apple for like 500$ so Im sure she doesn't have warranty. The other day I was typing a report and it kept typing in capitals when I didn't have the caps lock on...I figured out that it was something with the shift key. I took it off, and that still didnt work. I haven't spilled anything on it at all. I take very good care of it also. Now I can't en log in because my password has numbers which only turn into symbols.

Apr 1, 2012I purchased a late 2009 13" Macbook with 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB ram as a present for my son in college. He had problems last year and the top case and motherboard were replaced in early 2011; Recently his battery would not hold a charge and his hard drive failed. I replaced both and added more ram to speed it up - now at 8 GB)The right shift key does not work. I have checked universal access; speech-to-text features are off; checked keyboard - English is chosen; checked keyboard, shift key is not assigned to any function;Left shift key does work. Right shift key does work on an attached Logitech wireless keyboard. The key seems to press down okay, just will not capitalize any letters.

Hardware :: Mighty Mouse Not Working Fine / Right Click Acts As Left Click
Feb 12, 2007I just bought a mighty mouse, happy as I was, plugged it in and started my ibook running OS X 10.3.9.I know the mighty mouse shouldn't have full functionality (as the software delivered with it is >10.4.2).The problem is that the right click doesn't work right. When I try to right click it sometimes takes the right click, sometimes takes it as a left click (which is extremely annoying in firefox or finder).
I have SteerMouse (I'm a windows/linux user too) installed but when I de�nstalled it the problem remained.
When I plugged the mighty mouse in my pc (at that time running windows) right click just worked.When using a cheap mouse (from pleomax) the right click on the ibook (with Steermouse installed) works all the time.
I find this al really confusing. Seems like it can't be the hardware because it works on windows, but it can't be the software because another mouse does work.
I noticed that when right clicking at the total right side near the "expose-button" (not a position my fingers lay naturally) right click works all the time. I don't hope this is normal?

Nov 6, 2008if caps lock is off, shift of course makes the letter you hit capital. However, if caps lock is on, and you hit shift, the letter is capital, not lowercase. In Windows it would be lowercase. Is my MacBook acting how is should?
