View 4 RepliesI'm not the most computer savy guy in the world but I thought I'd ask the question. Is there a way to remove the hard drive from an old MacBook I have that stopped working (the plug where the power cord goes in is messed up nothing is wrong with the hard drive I believe) and use that hard drive as an external hard drive for my new(ish) iMac and use it for extra space? It would be amazing if I could. Anyone know how I can do this?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI had a MBA. I needed more RAM, higher CPU and larger drive capacity. So I changed to MBP. What I dont need is the optical drive. Apple should ditch the optical drive in MBPs or at least have an option not having an optical. Instead more battery and 2 disk bays.

I have a MacBook Pro early 2011 2.2 ghz with an SSD and a HDD. Mac OS is currently installed on both hard drives and I would like to remove it from my second hard drive, without deleting all my documents, movies, etc.

This post may be in the wrong spot and if it is I am sorry.
I have a sticky trackpad on my unibody Macbook. I received my box to send it in for repairs however I do not want to send in my hard drive being that I have sensitive data on there and they could easily work around my password if they really wanted to. Do you think I could just remove my hard drive and send it in? Is my hard drive necessary to send in?
I currently have about 143 Gb of memory taken up on my internal hard drive as Backup. Â
At least this is what I see when I go to About This Mac / StorageÂ
I have an external back up drive so really need to free up that area of the disc...Â

I can't boot my MacBook Pro. My hard drive is completely full. I was running a software update and didn't realize how big the file was. The computer shut off part of the way through the update and hasn't booted up since. How can I access the files on this drive to make some space?Â
I am running mavericks, but I don't know which version. I purchased a cable to access the internal drive through a USB on another computer. The drive shows up in disk utility, but will not let me browse the drive.
I'm replacing my Macbooks hard drive for the second time. The first time I replaced it I stupidly followed the official Apple guide which makes no mention of the hard drive caddy, so ended up chucking the caddy away with the old hard drive (yes, I know, durr). So now I'm trying to fit in my nice new 500GB HD and have not tab or anything to grab onto to get my old drive out of Macbook

I've seen pictures here: http://www.carltonbale.com/2008/01/w...ing-the-drive/ on how to disassemble the case, but am wondering if it will work in a Mac Pro.

There seems to be a solution, but I have no idea how to remove this (I do have an external WD HDD). I just don't find anything related to Western Digital.
My MBP was recently squished in a motorcycle accident and its hard drive and superdrive were destroyed. Is it possible to buy a new hard drive, put it in an external USB 2.0 enclosure, then install OS X on it using the discs that came with my destroyed MBP in a different Mac, then put the hard drive into the squished computer and have it use that hard drive as its startup disk? The motherboard on the squished computer is fine, I just can't install OS X on it because it has a broken superdrive.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI realize this may be a stupid question but here goes... I have recently installed Windows XP with Boot Camp and now realize more than ever how much I hate XP and was wondering if it were possible to remove that partition all together from the hard drive, and I guess have it added back to my Mac OS side. I think i know the answer but just want to be sure.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently ran across a great deal on a Mac Pro. I have been a Windows user since about day 1 of windows. My windows machine is a Gateway with a 320GB SATA drive with Vista Ultimate installed. Is there a way to take this hard drive and mount it in my Mac Pro and be able to boot to it? There are a LOT of programs on that drive (windows) that I use for specialized tasks and I lose a LOT of TIME trying to find Mac equivalents and then learning to use them.
Boot Camp on my Mac does not seem to want to work properly (although it does tell me what I need to do ... sort of). I just want to put my windows drive in my Mac and be able to boot to it.
P.S. It's a Mac Pro 3.1, 2 2.8ghz quad core Xeon, 16gb DDR2 ram, Snow Leopard
This is a Mac Mini operating on OS 10.58. I have a CD in the combo drive, and it apparently has something recorded on it. I think this CD had started to be burned and I stopped it. The computer indicates that this CD is not blank. The result is that it will not eject, even after several attempts using the small eject arrow at the top of the desktop, the use of apple-E, and after repeated efforts with a complete shutdown -- still the disk is stuck in the drive. I suspect that it's in a loop situation, where it tries to run the CD with not effect, but it also cannot eject it.Â
I notice a small black square, appearing to be black plastic, at the far right end of the CD/DVD player slot at the top of the Mac Mini. In the old days there was such a hole into which one could stick a straight wire, like a heavy duty straightened paper clip, and it would physically eject a stuck disk. Is there such a thing on this Mac Mini?Â

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust got an 'Apple [OEM] Rom' super drive from OWC. Next: how does one install it nicely in the beige G3 case. I see plastic everywhere and am 'guessing’ there is some sort of detent or stop that you can click to slide the original drive out. But I don’t see it! So, is there some sort of tray or rack that will allow me to slide out the old and slide in the new?

So I decided to go through with a clean install of Lion, since my MacBook is filled with unorganized junk and I just felt like getting a fresh start (I've also had connectivity problems with Airport, although it hasn't really bothered me much since I don't mind an old school network cable).I formatted a bootable USB thumb drive with the Lion OS .dmg file, restarted the computer while holding the alt button and selected to boot from the USB. The screen then showed the regular boot screen (whitish background with a grey Apple logo in the middle and a spinning loading icon right beneath the logo). After about 20 seconds, the Apple logo was replaced with a grey stop sign (a circle with a line straight across) and the loading icon kept spinning.
It's been like this for an hour and 20 minutes now, and I need to know what to do. Something is obviously not quite right. Should I remove the USB drive and try to restart the computer? Or just leave the USB drive and try to restart?

Sorry if i posted this in the wrong section. I have a LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB hard drive that has a broken power brick (for the second time) and i'm wondering if it's possible to take out the hard drive and install it in a Mac Pro (2010, 8 Core, 2.4GHx)?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe default behaviour of Macs seems to be to wake up from sleep whenever a USB device is disconnected or switched off. This is not very helpful for how I like to operate. I want to keep most of my files on an external USB drive without power-down feature so that I have fast access to them at the click of a mouse button (don't want to wait for the drive to spin up as can happen frequently if your drive has the power-down feature). However, I like to sleep my Mac several times a day, and when doing so would like to switch off the external USB HD until I get back. So you see the annoyance, but perhaps there is a way to disable this wakeup feature of Leopard. I'd be happy to learn it from you!
