MacBook :: Can't Remove Macbook Hard Drive?

Apr 17, 2009

I'm replacing my Macbooks hard drive for the second time. The first time I replaced it I stupidly followed the official Apple guide which makes no mention of the hard drive caddy, so ended up chucking the caddy away with the old hard drive (yes, I know, durr). So now I'm trying to fit in my nice new 500GB HD and have not tab or anything to grab onto to get my old drive out of Macbook

MacBook :: How To Remove The Hard Drive From An Old MB?

Nov 12, 2010

I'm not the most computer savy guy in the world but I thought I'd ask the question. Is there a way to remove the hard drive from an old MacBook I have that stopped working (the plug where the power cord goes in is messed up nothing is wrong with the hard drive I believe) and use that hard drive as an external hard drive for my new(ish) iMac and use it for extra space? It would be amazing if I could. Anyone know how I can do this?

MacBook :: Remove Hard Drive Before Sending In For Repairs?

Nov 16, 2009

This post may be in the wrong spot and if it is I am sorry.

I have a sticky trackpad on my unibody Macbook. I received my box to send it in for repairs however I do not want to send in my hard drive being that I have sensitive data on there and they could easily work around my password if they really wanted to. Do you think I could just remove my hard drive and send it in? Is my hard drive necessary to send in?

MacBook Pro :: Won't Boot / Not Enough Space - How To Access Hard Drive To Remove Files

Jun 30, 2014

I can't boot my MacBook Pro. My hard drive is completely full. I was running a software update and didn't realize how big the file was. The computer shut off part of the way through the update and hasn't booted up since. How can I access the files on this drive to make some space?

I am running mavericks, but I don't know which version. I purchased a cable to access the internal drive through a USB on another computer. The drive shows up in disk utility, but will not let me browse the drive.

MacBook Pro :: Remove Hard Drive - Install In External Enclosure And Install OS X?

Jan 5, 2011

My MBP was recently squished in a motorcycle accident and its hard drive and superdrive were destroyed. Is it possible to buy a new hard drive, put it in an external USB 2.0 enclosure, then install OS X on it using the discs that came with my destroyed MBP in a different Mac, then put the hard drive into the squished computer and have it use that hard drive as its startup disk? The motherboard on the squished computer is fine, I just can't install OS X on it because it has a broken superdrive.

OS X :: Stop Mac Waking When Remove Or Switch Off USB Hard Drive?

Aug 1, 2009

The default behaviour of Macs seems to be to wake up from sleep whenever a USB device is disconnected or switched off. This is not very helpful for how I like to operate. I want to keep most of my files on an external USB drive without power-down feature so that I have fast access to them at the click of a mouse button (don't want to wait for the drive to spin up as can happen frequently if your drive has the power-down feature). However, I like to sleep my Mac several times a day, and when doing so would like to switch off the external USB HD until I get back. So you see the annoyance, but perhaps there is a way to disable this wakeup feature of Leopard. I'd be happy to learn it from you!

MacBook Pro :: Audiable Click Sound Of Hard Drive / Protection Of The Hard Drive Dropped?

Sep 1, 2009

Got a new MBP last month to replace my white MacBook - loving it as an upgrade but one gripe - if I'm sat using it on my knee I regularly hear the "click" type noise of what I imagine is the protection of the hard drive because it thinks it is being dropped.

I never heard this on my old Mac and while it's not a huge issue it is a bit disconcerting, as though I'm being told off for moving it in a fairly responsible way.

MacBook :: Migrating Contents Of Hard Drive To New One / Hard Drive Has Partition For Bootcamp?

Jul 27, 2009

I have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?

If this is possible at all, how can I go about doing so? If there are steps laid out somewhere, I'd appreciate a referral. Sorry if my question is a little elementary, but I did a search on these forums and also google and nothing really came up

MacBook Pro :: Cloning Entire Hard Drive To An External Hard Drive

Mar 31, 2012

Recently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

MacBook Pro :: After Installing New Hard Drive - Previous Hard Drive Is Failed

Sep 9, 2014

Macbook Pro 17" Early 2011

Notes. Failed HDD ASD Test.  A new hard drive was installed in September of 2011 after the previous hard drive failed. Having worked well until now the system seems to give the same problems as it had previously.  I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue as others have pointed out.

I have been told by the technician my only option is to replace the entire hard drive again for the second time with a new one. However to my understanding a ASD test is very specific and this my not be necessary? Further I am attempting a final backup just in case. I don't have to take it in where I could just back it up myself without the system shutting down.

MacBook :: Install New Hard Drive / No DVD Drive / Gray Screen Of Death

Aug 29, 2014

I have never backed up my Macbook 2.1 duo before yesterday. While in the process of backing up I was using photoshop, and my computer froze. I waited 30 min and then decided to shut it down. When I tried to turn it on it will not boot-up, I only get the grey screen of death. I had just recently upgraded to Snow Leopard this week. I used an external DVD drive which seemed to cause issues. So I thought I might be able to use that to install a clean version on this busted drive, well nothing worked, tried holding option key, holding down the C key. I ordered another drive that says its compatible with my drive. Since the my mac doesnt seem to acknowledge my drive, I bought an external housing for my new internal. I want to format and load Snow leopard onto the new hard drive using my girl friends mac. then put in my macbook. I would like to know if this will work? how I need to format my drive in disk utility.. Is it possible that it is not my Hard Drive?

Another side note, I just upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 4GB on my Macbook 2.1, I did try and putting my old ram back in just incase that was the issue.

MacBook Pro :: Hard To Upgrade Hard Drive?

Jan 13, 2010

I have a 3 year old Macbook pro which is still going strong. It's my birthday soon and I'm thinking about treating myself to a new 500 GB Hard drive. I have looked up how to upgrade it myself on iFixit.com and it looks OK but I'm just checking here to see what the general level of opinion is about difficulty / risk of buggering it up. The link to the process is here: [URL] I paid to upgrade the stock HD to a 250 GB whilst it was still under warranty but since that has expired now I don't think I have as much to lose by opening it up myself.

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Makes Crunching Sound / Partitioned Drive To Install Windows?

Aug 28, 2009

So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.

I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent. Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.
