I use my macbook pro mostly for pro audio work so I think I'll probably need 7,200 speed (which I currently have)
I want quiet, extremely reliable and fast. I've seen the following:
Seagate Momentus - I've heard it's noisy and viberates and maybe not so reliable?
WD Scorpio Blue - I think only available in 5,400 speed
Hitachi spinpoint - again only in 5,400 speed

im concidering upgrading from the 250gb Hard drive i have(i believe) to somethin alot bigger say 500Gb to terabyte? on my 2.4 Ghz UMB. now im not quite sure, but the highest im going to be able to go right now is 500Gb right?i cant find a 2.5" SATA 7400rpm that is above 500Gb.So how long is it going to take before i can get a decent 750Gb or 1T?in case your wondering, im planning on devoting a 10Gb or so to a Windows portion via bootcamp, and spliting the other portion so that i can have a time machine drive on my MB

I'm sure all of you heard about the new mac book more specifically the 13 inch. I however have the original macbook 13 unibody laptop. I want to upgrade my hard drive but I want to make sure there isn't a max space which my laptop can handle. Does any one if there is a max and what the specifications of the hard drive size is like the size?

I have all the data double-backed up so I'm not worried about that, but assuming I have to replace it what can I get? I'd heard that you can put any 2.5" SATA drive into a late 2008 15" mac-book pro, but occasionally I see consumer reviews saying things like "only compatible with 2009 mac-book pros onwards" or "not compatible with lion".

its wierd, its 60 degrees celsium and 2300rpm fans (without any smc fan manglers) just FRESHLY rebooted, and completely CLEAN install! without anything. odesnt matter if its 10.5 or 10.6.
it used to be 44 degrees and 1800rpm fans! and 40 degrees with 2000rpm fans on 10.5. .

My old hitachi HDD went on the fritz and I obviously don't want to replace the corrupt hard drive with another hitachi HDD. I'm looking for an SSD to install. I don't need a huge drive because my data's in the cloud for storage so I'm looking at the SSD.Â
I would like to purchase the intel 330 120gb SSD. Here are my basic specs:Â
MBP late 2008 unibody 2.8ghz processor
4gb ram
NVIDIA 9600
250gb Hitachi 2.5" HDD (this is the original corrupt drive I want to replace)Â
-How does TRIM work on the mac? Will I have TRIM issues with the intel 330? How do I go about this?
-Has anyone had any 1.5gb negotiation rate issues? How did you resolve them?
-Any other installation issues I should be aware of and workarounds for them? Â

I bought a new harddrive to upgrade my macbook's old hard drive to a new one over the spring break. I tried to unscrew the screw on the black plastic retaining bar, but I unfortunately failed to do so: even worse, the screw is completely stripped now!
Since the screw is so small, I don't think I can use any of the "Easy Out" kind of unscrewing stripped screw tools... or can I? Wouldn't I damage the retaining bar? What should I do?

I've noticed recently that occasionally my screen will intermittently flicker.
It doesn't seem to be tied to anything specific. Just a random black screen flash.

I did some google searches, but could not find anything that was exactly my issue. I have a 2008 MBP unibody. If the MBP is on battery only and I close the lid, the notebook shuts down completely. This is even when the battery is fully charged. However if while plugged in and I do the same, the computer "sleeps" as advertised. I have reset both the SMC and PRAM to no avail. The main thing that bothers me is it seems like when this happens on battery, its almost as if the computer is getting a hard shut down. The machine acts as if the battery was pulled while the lid was closed and this is obviously not good for the hardware or sofware.

I recently purchased a Late 2008 Unibody MacBook. I am thrilled! Yet I seem to be having the same charging issue MANY other people have had and have still not found a solution. Basically, as with everyone else, when I connected the Magsafe connector, it stays on finishing charge as if stuck there. I have left it for 2 full days and nights now with no luck. I have calibrated the battery and it is still doing it. The battery only shows 60 cycles and it's health it at 80%. I've even reset the SMC with no avail.

I did this for the Macbook Pro's a while back, but I'm a Macbook guy now. There are a few other threads with profiles but it's no good if you use a profile made from a different panel than what you have. I'm just trying to consolidate things here.
I will try to keep this post current; please only submit profiles created from hardware, not those done by human eye (meatware?) And be sure to say which panel the profile is for. Thanks to everyone for contributing and improving the Macbook experience!
How to determine your panel type/code
How to install and use color profiles
Basic tests to determine if a profile is a good fit:
Black level
White level
Gamma

See attachment (rezonat0r-9c89.zip)Spyder3 Pro. 2.2 Gamma, Native and 6500K whitepoint. I recommend using the Native whitepoint.See attachment (rezonat0r-9c89-alt.zip)Spyder3 Pro. 2.2 Gamma, Native whitepoint. This is an alternate profile made from another Macbook with the LG panel. It is similar to the previous but slightly darkerjessica's profileSpyder2 Pro. 2.2 Gamma. Native whitepoint (I think - not confirmed)
9C8C (AU Optronics)
See attachment (rezonat0r-9c8c.zip)Spyder3 Pro. 2.2 Gamma. I only did a calibration at native whitepoint (honestly, if you really need 6500K then you won't be using a Macbook screen, or any laptop screen for that matter)

I bought an oldish MacBook 13' Unibody (late 2008) and when I got it one of the first things I did was to install Mac OSX Lion.Â
Everything was working fine, until I applied an update that made the trackpad stop working (it only accepts clicks, no touch is recognized).Â
This is the "Trackpad Firmware Update" from the automatic updates.Â
When starting this firmware update it appears a window with a status message, cancel and Update buttons. After clicking the update button, it starts installing, appears to complete, status changes to "Finishing...", and Update button comes back active at some point. Â
After that I have tried (unsuccessfully):downloading and installing the update directly from Apple Support [URL] thing, but using the 'root' accountleaving the computer on overnight to see if actually "finished" the processReset PRAM PVRAM - [URL] - [URL] palm pressing over 30 seconds on the trackpad (read this on another thread...?)Â Â

I've bought a 3Tb Western Digital Caviar Green Hard Drive, put it in a Welland enclosure, formatted it with Windows 7 into three partitions (all exFAT), two just over 1 Tb and the third only 32 Gb. I was hoping that my Mac Pro 2008 would be able to see it, but no.

While reading up on the Early 2008 Mac Pro before mine shipped, Macworld wrote that "The eight-core 2.8GHz system lagged in some of our tests, results we attribute to its somewhat sluggish Seagate hard drive." referring to the OEM 320GB. When my 2008 Mac Pro arrived I was happy to see it's a Western Digital instead. (always preferred them over seagate... far quieter)

I am trying to find a way to reset my DVD drive, as its now locked. Apparently its been changed 5 times, (not that i remember doing it) but that is what has happened. I read you can flash to a new firmware with a RPC-1 update. However am a bit confused as to which version to use.
Vendor: HL-DT-ST
Model: DVDRW GS21N
Firmware: SA15
RPC-2 (region locked)
state is PERMANENT
4 vendor resets left
0 region change left
Region 1
point me in the right direction to update to a RPC-1 firmware for this particular model DVD drive?

I started this situation with a bootable hard drive that I removed from a 4,1 (mid 2008) and a brand new unibody MacBook Pro. What I wanted to do was use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive to the new MBP. I used CCC to clone the drive to the new one and repaired permissions on the internal drive and tried booting from it. No Luck. I figured this was stupid to do and I could just use migration assistant so I decided to reinstall Leopard on the unibody. Unfortunately when I attempt to boot from the DVD it doesn't go past a blank grey screen. I also tried holding down option to open the boot manager and select the DVD, when hit enter over the DVD it freezes. The interesting thing is that when I connect the old drive to the unibody using an enclosure I can boot from the external drive no problem. I tried using another computer to install leopard on the unibody over firewire and the installation went fine but when I start the unibody it doesn't go past a blank grey screen. I am also positive the hard drive isn't damaged or anything because when I go to the boot manager after leopard is installed the internal drive shows up but when I select it, it freezes. I have tried resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, repairing the disk (which is successful). When I try to boot into single user mode the computer freezes when loading the text. Another interesting thing is that when do boot from the external drive it goes through verbose mode every time and I never choose to do that. Right now I am attempting to clone drive using Super Duper to new drive and see what happens.

I have the infamous bugged model, the Late 2008 Macbook Pro. Famous for its screen flickering on the 9400M Nvidia graphics card. Â
I am currently using the 9600GT Nvidia card, and have some across a few... problems. First of which: Hard Freezing. I know this will happen occasionally, but I had to shut down my computer 3 times in 4 days because of a hard freeze. 2 of the times, the hard freeze was accompanied by my screen just going absolutely CRAZY. Â
Here is a slight example of what it's doing, but it's not exact (since both times it did something different): Â
[URL]Â
Both times, before the hard freeze and flickering, my iStat Pro told me my CPU temp was between 99 degrees Fahrenheit and 103 degrees Fahrenheit. I am wondering if these low temperatures could have ANYTHING to do with the freezing. This problem has just cropped up recently, and I have never had such low temperatures on my mac. I have Fan Control installed because my fans on my laptop weren't cooling off my laptop well enough... the 9600M GT card runs really hot.

Got a new MBP last month to replace my white MacBook - loving it as an upgrade but one gripe - if I'm sat using it on my knee I regularly hear the "click" type noise of what I imagine is the protection of the hard drive because it thinks it is being dropped.
I never heard this on my old Mac and while it's not a huge issue it is a bit disconcerting, as though I'm being told off for moving it in a fairly responsible way.

I have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?
If this is possible at all, how can I go about doing so? If there are steps laid out somewhere, I'd appreciate a referral. Sorry if my question is a little elementary, but I did a search on these forums and also google and nothing really came up

My superdrive does not burn DVD's regardless of media or application. It fails every time. It reads but doesn't write. Firmware is up to date. I've used Toast, iDVD and Disk Utility. No luck. My AppleCare has expired so looking for an external DVD drive. Will the MacBook Air Superdrive work on my old MacBook Pro running 10.7.3?

Recently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

Macbook Pro 17" Early 2011Â
Notes. Failed HDD ASD Test.  A new hard drive was installed in September of 2011 after the previous hard drive failed. Having worked well until now the system seems to give the same problems as it had previously. I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue as others have pointed out. Â
I have been told by the technician my only option is to replace the entire hard drive again for the second time with a new one. However to my understanding a ASD test is very specific and this my not be necessary? Further I am attempting a final backup just in case. I don't have to take it in where I could just back it up myself without the system shutting down.
