I have a slow loading brand new dvd burner that I took out of a dell studio xps 16" that is the same exact size as the super drive in the macbook pro unibody 15" (both sata)....Is it possible for me to use this drive since my macbook pro 15 is not letting me load cds or dvds but it does go in...let me know before I do this myself and damage the whole thing!

It's been a while since I've been to these forums but I've come across another issue.
I bought this refurbished Macbook from Apple on November 26, 2008 (model MB061LL/B).
I have a macbook pro 2009. I've barely used the drive. Tried to pop in a disc today and nada ... zilch. The disc won't enter the slot. I don't think any disc is in there, tried ejecting in case.No activity at all. Is it rigor mortis and a trip to the Genius Pub ? Any way to check if my drive has silently passed away. I had to replace my white macbook's drive last year so I'm starting to think they're all a bit c**p.

newmodeus has what appears to be a compatible 9.5mm superdrive to hard drive replacement for the unibody macbooks on their site now.
I am trying to find a way to reset my DVD drive, as its now locked. Apparently its been changed 5 times, (not that i remember doing it) but that is what has happened. I read you can flash to a new firmware with a RPC-1 update. However am a bit confused as to which version to use.

I want quiet, extremely reliable and fast. I've seen the following:
Seagate Momentus - I've heard it's noisy and viberates and maybe not so reliable?
WD Scorpio Blue - I think only available in 5,400 speed
Hitachi spinpoint - again only in 5,400 speed
im concidering upgrading from the 250gb Hard drive i have(i believe) to somethin alot bigger say 500Gb to terabyte? on my 2.4 Ghz UMB. now im not quite sure, but the highest im going to be able to go right now is 500Gb right?i cant find a 2.5" SATA 7400rpm that is above 500Gb.So how long is it going to take before i can get a decent 750Gb or 1T?in case your wondering, im planning on devoting a 10Gb or so to a Windows portion via bootcamp, and spliting the other portion so that i can have a time machine drive on my MB
View 23 Replies View RelatedI started this situation with a bootable hard drive that I removed from a 4,1 (mid 2008) and a brand new unibody MacBook Pro. What I wanted to do was use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive to the new MBP. I used CCC to clone the drive to the new one and repaired permissions on the internal drive and tried booting from it. No Luck. I figured this was stupid to do and I could just use migration assistant so I decided to reinstall Leopard on the unibody. Unfortunately when I attempt to boot from the DVD it doesn't go past a blank grey screen. I also tried holding down option to open the boot manager and select the DVD, when hit enter over the DVD it freezes. The interesting thing is that when I connect the old drive to the unibody using an enclosure I can boot from the external drive no problem. I tried using another computer to install leopard on the unibody over firewire and the installation went fine but when I start the unibody it doesn't go past a blank grey screen. I am also positive the hard drive isn't damaged or anything because when I go to the boot manager after leopard is installed the internal drive shows up but when I select it, it freezes. I have tried resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, repairing the disk (which is successful). When I try to boot into single user mode the computer freezes when loading the text. Another interesting thing is that when do boot from the external drive it goes through verbose mode every time and I never choose to do that. Right now I am attempting to clone drive using Super Duper to new drive and see what happens.

When you add up the numbers, it looks like the least expensive dual Xeon machine w/ 1600MHz FSB. But being some what new to Mac's (I have been watching Mac's for years and have worked with BSD on and off for years, too), I have questions. One thing is with the standard PC workstation, they come with two 5 1/4 bays, one will be ready for my to install the internal Blue-ray burning needed to burn those HD disks. How is that done on a Mac Pro? Can one get a Blue-ray drive to fit in the second SuperDrive slot? If not, what are the options?

Is this normal or is it supposed to only be pushed in about half way. When it ejects it seems that it pushes the disc out much further. Is there something you must do before inserting a cd, or do you just push it in?

I know it doesn't say it is compatible but it is a slot loading drive compatible with osx.
This is not related to the other bluray thread on here. I am looking for a slot loading Blu Ray drive (I do not want write capability) for my iMac Aluminum. I know fastmac sell a Bluray drive for $999, but that has the unnecessary write capability which jacks up the price. So, does anyone know where to get a slot loading BD-ROM for the iMac?

I already put RAM and HDD but the computing power is just not enough. What I want to do is go into OpenFirmware and speed up the cpu and possibly the bus, I remember doing so on my sawtooth but I can't find the code plus that was a G4 and now I have a G3. I also found this page [URL] that shows how to mechanicaly overclock up to 1GHZ but I want to be able to do it non physical if possible. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have currently acquired a few old Macs. I have got an iMac G3 SE with a slot loading drive. The computer is fine all barr the slot load drive - it has died. I have also got a PPC Mac Mini with a suggested logic board failure.
Does anybody think there is a chance i could replace the broken slot load drive in the iMac with the working one from the mac mini? i don't want to start opening the iMac up if someone already knows theres no chance it would work.
My friend was thinking of getting a new iMac, the only thing he does not like about them is the slot loading drive. He burns around 5 cd's/DVD's a day, a stack of 100 cd's does not last long with him. He does a lot of movie burning to watch it on his tv and wonders if after a year of tons of burning will the slot loading drive die out. He does not want to buy an external DVD burner as well which is what i use.
