MacBook :: Froze On The Apple With The Spinning Progress Indicator?

I have a 13 in. black MacBook (late 2006) and somehow have managed to break it.  Last year I had trouble where the computer randomly messed up how it booted and I had to use live Linux cd's to recover my data. I had to completely wipe the drive that time.  Things went blissfully on until yesterday when it froze, after waiting for at least a minute when I held the power button down to kill it.  I tried to restart but it froze on the apple with the spinning progress indicator. I killed again, and started in single user mode, where I got a plethora of disk0 I/O errors. After waiting there a while the computer stopped doing anything so I killed again.  Now, it doesn't even recognize the fact that the hard drive exists.  I am able to boot a Linux cd but there is no hard drive anywhere.  All help is great as I don't want to keep using this win7 computer.

PowerPC :: EMac Stuck At Grey Screen & Spinning Progress Indicator?
Greetings and saluations everyone. I've recently delved into the OSX world via secondhand eMac. The specs are eMac (2006 - not a typo... this is what it says)/1.42gHz/80GB HDD/1GB ram/etc. It came equipped with 10.4.6, did an update to the software and it brought the machine to 10.4.11.

After a week or so of tinkering, I think I have accidentally deleted some very necessary system files. Given that the computer did not come with any manuals or recovery discs, I've been doing some major digging over the last three days via internet and can not come up with a fix for my new love. I saw this post on MacRumors and it nearly is exactly what I'm experiencing: Mac chimes upon pressing of start button, goes to greyish screen with grey Apple logo and a spinning progress indicator then the computer goes silent (no HDD/CD activity)... yet keeps the active grey screen.

I've tried booting into safe mode but to no avail which leads me to think I've accidentally deleted some extremely necessary boot files. However, I do not remember emptying the trash during the last successful boot... is there a way from a command line prompt to "put the files back" to where they go?

I've downloaded several Mac OSX Leopard torrents but can't get them to boot off of USB drive, DVD RW external drive, external USB hard drive nor via OSX 9 CD ... Indeed, I am trying to burn from windows but have learned of several utilities which create ISOs in Mac Format and will decompress DMG files (ISOBuster & TransMac).

Please... will someone give me some good news? For example, telling me there is a way to boot from USB drive (and in what format the mac needs to boot - ISO? DMG? Expanded file system in appropriate directory folders? I don't care about wiping the hard drive... that's absolutely fine... I just need a working system again.

OS X :: Grey Screen With Apple/progress Indicator Wheel?
I am running an emac with OS X 10.4 installed (I think). Anyway, I've been searching all morning for a solution in the forums, but haven't really seen or been able to solve my problem.

The computer was shut down correctly over the weekend, there are no grinding noises, no error messages, the screen is just stuck on that grey screen with the apple and progress wheel and won't finish booting up all the way.

It's happened once before, but I just did a hard restart on it, and it has worked fine ever since. Never had any real problems until now, but nothing I have tried from searching on the forums has worked (apple X, option control, restarts, etc.). It won't boot up in any kind of safe mode, that I can figure out.

Is there something I am missing, or not trying, or am I just toast?

MacBook Pro :: Got Rainbow Spinning And System Froze Up
My MBP 13' was working perfectly fine all this morning and then all of the sudden I got the rainbow spinning thing and it froze up. I couldn't do the force quit or anything. It shut off on its own and when I re-boot it makes all the normal noises but gets stuck on the blue start up screen before the log in. I called Tech Support and did all of the restart things that they tell you to do. Is there any other suggestions before I drive 30 minutes to the nearest store for my appt. tomorrow. Also, generally how long will the store keep my computer for and will everything on my HD be lost? I am a college student and I have all of my important documents saved on this comp.

Power Mac G5 :: Froze & No Longer Able To Start Up - Indicator Light Flashes 3 Times
I was using Logic while my PowerMac G5 DP 1.8 froze completely. I wasn't able to escape the program or do anything else for that matter so I manually powered down and then when I turned my G5 on again the computer would not start up while the indicator light on the front panel flashed 3 times and then paused and then repeated again indefinitely. Over time the fan starts softly and then gets very loud. I have been reading alot of reports, here and elsewhere, that this has been happening to alot of G5's after about 3 years time (which is approximately the same age as my computer). I also tried a bunch of stuff like the PMU reset, pulling out some of the memory and trying to restart the computer but nothing has worked. From my web research of other people's experiences, it appears that the logic board or the CPU or both need to be replaced. I have an appointment to take the G5 to my local Apple store but I was wondering what to expect. The G5 is obviously no longer under warranty but are they going to expect me to pay for a new board or CPU? I also read somewhere that in one case the Apple store just fixed the computer with no charge for parts or labor. Has anybody had this experience recently and know what to expect?

Snow Leopard :: Change Spinning Wheel Into Progress Bar?
Is there any way to change the spinning wheel into a progress bar or any form of estimated amount of time? I just switched to a mac and I find it really annoying that I don't know if its going to take 12hrs or 12 seconds or anywhere in-between. For example I'm deleting several thousand photos from iPhoto. I go to empty the trash in iPhoto 09 and I have had a spinning wheel for 2 hrs now, and I have no idea when it will finish.

OS X :: 24" IMac Not Booting - Froze With The Spinning Wheel Of Death
My imac has just all of a sudden stopped working out of the blue. It was working fine yesterday and then just froze with the spinning wheel of death.

After a long long time it still was frozen so i held power button for 4 secs to power down.

PS: i am running snow leopard up to date on both macs.

I tried to power up and it has random start up issues.

1) It sometimes has the flashing folder with question mark and grey/white screen

2) It sometimes has the plain blue screen

3) It once out of the last 30 attempts to boot goes to the desktop and i noticed my wallpaper had been reset to default mac one. - Every move i made had the spinning wheel and i did not get past loading
Firefox and it froze again.

I have tried resetting the PRAM from boot disk but did not help. I ran Disk Utility from boot disk and repaired permissions and disk. No change in imac..

I have also tried pulling out one o the 4gig rams and booting and still the same problem so im guessing the ram is ok??

I have tried connecting imac to my macbook pro via 6 pin firewire cable and booing the imac into Target mode but the imac never appears on the macbook pro desktop to access files. The cd-rom appears showing the disk in the imac and i could eject it from the macbook pro. So looks like the target mode boot works, kind of..

I am running out of options and found out today my imac is not under warranty anymore.. !!!!! $%#%$#%

Any chance i have a virus of some sort?

OS X :: Snow Leopard Shutdown - Blue Screen And Progress Wheel Just Spinning
I upgraded to Snow Leopard and a few days later when i went to shutdown my mac pro after i woke it up, i got the blue screen and progress wheel just spinning. After calls with Apple, running both long and short hardware tests, 3 snow leopard discs, a clean install, 2 upgrades, the tech gave up. The clean install was a bare bones install with no applications installed. I would now have to take it into a repair shop and pay for software tests. This is a one year old mac pro with apple care. I used Time Machine to restore to leopard, and all is ok. Has anyone heard of this problem? I'm quit happy to stick with Leopard, but am upset that an apple software problem has to be fixed and paid for by me. I assume if it was a hardware problem it would show up in Leopard.

MacBook :: Apple Update Froze With Multi Colored Circle
I was went onto updates and clicked install to a new Java update. Then apple update froze with a multi colored circle. I use force quit which worked, but some other apps wouldn't open after this and just sat there bouncing on the dock for ages. So next I selected restart from the apple menus and it was going through the shutdown process but didn't complete and just left my desktop sitting there. After 10 minutes, I help in the power button to manually shut it down, now it has restarted its all fine. What do you think could have happened, I have had it on for the past 3 days only sleeping it.

OS X :: Loads Grey Apple Progress Bar On Startup Every Time?
Went to the Apple store, explained my problem and they brought out a new iMac for me. Did a retail swap instead of going through the Genuis Bar. I'm so happy =) =) Got a brand new iMac. This time, I disk Disk Check right away, and it says hard drive appears to be OK. No grey progress bar anymore! The problem was probably b/c the hard drive was defective. It had nothing to do with the unsafe shutdown, or pressing shift, etc...

I have a iMac 27'.. Purchased it 2 weeks ago.

I think I did an unsafe shutdown.. Or I pressed "shift" while booting, or something.. Idk and I also have WinXP installed on BootCamp. However for some reason now every time I startup my Mac, it loads with the grey Apple horizontal progress bar with a little loading animation on top. It's so annoying. This didn't happen after no firmware upgrade or anything. And I don't have any extra hard drives attached. Nothing. Everything is fine. Everything used to work. Even with BootCamp before. I think this happened after an unsafe shutdown or something. And also, my Mac has over 500GB free space still, so that's not an issue.

The progress bar at startup Takes 5-6 min extra to boot up. After it, the Mac OS X loads and everything is fine but that's not what my problem is. My problem is why should I be getting the stupid progress bar EVERYTHING I load my Mac?

I tried booting with installation disk, then going to Disk Utility but NOTHING. I click repair, and after 5 mins some error pops up saying backup your files when you can then reformat the disk.

Oh btw, Anytime I click Repair Disk it goes, then says: Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required. And after that it says: "Disk Utility stopped repairing "MY DISK NAME HERE". Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backend-up files.

Maybe the hard drive is damaged or defective.

Intel Mac :: Not Booting Up - Stuck At Apple Logo Screen With Progress Spinner
My 24 inch iMac is not getting pass the apple logo. It acts like it's loading, but then the little progress spinner (not sure of the name) stops spinning after 2-3 minutes. It never wants to get pass that. I'm running the latest version of Lion.

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS

So far I've tried using disc utility on my snow leopard disc....it doesn't load. I've tried to start in safe mode...it loads about half way and stops. Oddly enough windows xp works in bootcamp. It runs okay besides when I try to move windows. I'm guessing it's the graphics card. No idea really. Here is a video I made to show you what I mean: [URL]. I've also tried installing a new 1TB HD and it still won't boot from a disc for some reason. I tried install snow leopard through the internal superdrive and with an external superdrive. No dice.

MacBook Aluminum :: Won't Start Up - Getting Grey Apple And Spinning Gear
I was only getting the grey apple and the spinning gear on start up and could not get any further went through the troubleshooting in the support section - tried safe reboot, restoring PRAM, etc. - nothing worked called apple tech support and they had me put my Mac OS X Installer disk in now it goes to Install screen - I select my language but when I get to SELECT A DESTINATION there is nothing to click and Options is not highlighted either went into Disk Utilities and it gives me 4 options -> 298.1 GB Toshiba MK3, Macintosh HD, HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N, or Max OS X Install DVD

I cannot get it to do a repair on any of these - it says Macintosh HD "Keys out of order" repair failed and for the Install DVD it says Error: the underlyiung task reported failure on exit Apple Tech had me do a Hardware test - so I did the Extended one and it took about an hour and a half and said there were no problems now if I take the Installer DVD out and try to restart it comes up with a blinking file folder with a question mark

I have backed up my documents, pics, etc recently on my external hard drive, so I am not really worried about losing all my stuff, it is more the issue that this Macbook is only about a year or so old. Is it toast? I do not have the cash to buy another laptop!! I live about 4 hours drive from the nearest Genius store or Mac Service spot.

MacBook :: Wouldn't Start - Stuck With Apple Sign And Spinning Wheel
my 2006 macbook has not been able to start. First it didn't even have the chime, then I read through some threads in this forum and figured out that one of my RAMs was not properly put in. I fixed that, now I get the chime, the apple sign, and a spinning wheel and I am stuck there forever.

I tried:

resetting PRAM, didn't help.

start from safe boot, still stuck with apple sign and spinning wheel.

boot from installation CD by holding either the "C" or "D" key, it would not start from the CD.

Curiously, I can start it in Windows and I am using Windows right now. Some threads said that it could be a hard drive problem, but if I am using Windows, does it mean that my hard drive is fine?

I've already spent 800+ fixing the logic board in 2008 b/c of a water spill and really don't want to spend any meaningful amount of money to fix this 1000 bucks or so laptop. If any hardware is in jeopardy, I'd rather just throw it away. However, I would like to at least be able to start it in Mac OS once so that I can back up my documents.

MacBook Pro :: Its Stuck On Spinning Wheel, Apple Logo - Not Responding To Disc?
'Ive had a MacBookPro for about a year and a half - with zero problems to report. But, yesterday, I decided to do a software update for OSX. While waiting on it, I relaized I was running late for an appointment, got impatient and did a forced shutdown (stupid move, I now know). Anyway, upon restarting it, I get the usual start-up chime, then the grey screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel - and then it stays there. I tried putting the operating syten disc in and did a start-up - same results. Ditto for safe start. I also tried to reset the NVRAM, got the second chime, then back to the same. Is there anything you folks can suggest? Is there a way to override this and get back to normal? I hope I'm merely having hiccups related to the operating system. Or could this be a sign of the dreaded logic board failure that I fear?

MacBook Pro :: Won't Boot Up - Stuck At Grey Apple Logo - With Gear Spinning?
I was playing around with iWeb 09' trying to make a better website for my company... when all of a sudden it wouldn't load from the tool bar it would bounce up and down once or twice and nothing would happen. I then by mistake put the file on my desktop then wanted to get rid of it so I dropped it into my trash. oops! Well then everytime I clicked on iweb it would say file is damaged or incomplete. So when I got home from work I decided to try to reinstall the application with the app disk that came with my computer.

Well instead of being patient and figuring out how to install just the iweb app. I reinstalled the whole bundle !! oops again... I know I don't deserve to be a mac user !! but I've fell in love!! OK now the install finished and it asked me to restart now so I did ... and this is where I'm stuck... It restarts and goes to the apple grey screen with a small bar that starts to load and then disappears and gets stuck at the spinning gear. I've manually ejected the disc by holding down the trackpad. And I put in the os x disc and tried to get into setup by holding down C after I hear the chime and until I see the spinning gear and that doesn't pull up anything!!

MacBook Pro :: MBP Won't Startup: Not Going Past Apple And Spinning Wheel On Grey Screen
I just bought my mbp in september and it was working fine. The past couple of days it wouldn't do certain tasks saying there was a network memory error, i think 5000. Then today it wasn't recognizing my ipod (wouldn't connect, but would charge) so, i restarted. bad idea. now it won't go past the grey screen with the apple and the spinning activity bar.

things i've tried:
-safe booting, the bar shows up but then it goes away and does nothing.
-restarted with the startup install disc to do a disc utility check, does everything and says nothing is wrong
-restarted with the diagnostics test, ran both the long and the short test, and both times nothing is wrong
-and i've done a pram reboot

MacBook Air :: (SSD) Won't Restart - Blue Grey Screen - Apple Logo - Spinning Icon
I'm on a trip with Air and SuperDrive and original software disks and a MacBook Pro. After trying to restart MacBook Air, it stays stuck on the blue grey screen with spinning icon. I restarted the Air with the system install disk in the SuperDrive, and used Disk Utility to repair the Air's HD, and it came back saying the disk appears to be ok. But trying to restart from the Air's startup disk, same situation. I could try to reinstall the original operating system from DVD, but will that erase my documents, etc.? I am traveling and don't have access to my usual Time Machine backup at home. Since there's no Target Disk Mode in MacBook Air, is there anyway I can get to my existing documents folder to copy a few essential files before wiping the whole hard drive?
