MacBook :: Does The Led Lamps Apple Logo And Sleep Indicator Ever Run Out
Nov 23, 2010
due to my low skills in electronics I want to know this. The shiny logo at the back of apple laptops, and the shiny sleep indicator, are these some kind of lamp? If so, dont they ever run out of electrons? Like when you have to change your light bulbs at home. I have never heard of them stop working so I guess they work in some other way?

I recently had to reset the SMC on my Macbook Core Duo in an attempt to rectify a separate issue and now I don't know if the sleep indicator LED is behaving abnormally, because I don't seem to remember for sure how it was before the SMC reset. Can anyone tell me if the Macbook's sleep indicator LED on the bottom right hand corner should be lit when the machine is switched on? I can almost swear it wasn't before, but now the LED is constantly lit up.

I noticed a couple of days ago that my sleep indicator has stopped working. When I shut the lid the computer goes to sleep.... when i open it back up after 30 seconds or a minute msn tries to reconnect and i heard the cd make that little noise that it does... anyone know of anything i could try to make it work again?
This is my first mac, it's a Macbook Aluminum Unibody 13" 2.0GHz... this is the only problem I've encountered.... I know it's pretty minor, but I like things to work as they're supposed to, especially when they're this new.

PROPOSITION: Turn the sleep indicator light to a power indicator light.
I just noticed, the sleep indicator light pulses when my MBP is in sleep, but is always completely off when it's in use. This is actually a little frustrating, as sometimes I leave my MBP idle with the screen off and the backlit keyboard off as well, and I can't tell if the thing is on or not since it's dead silent.
Also, I noticed that when I leave my MBP plugged in, idle overnight, the sleep indicator light is solid in the morning. It's definitely not indicating sleep, since the unit is on, so I'm not sure what it means.
Anyway, anyone else think the sleep indicator light should be solid when the computer is in use? How would you tell the difference between an MBP that is powered off, and closed and slipped into a backpack, from an MBP that is simply powered on but fails to enter sleep for some reason?
Is there a way to keep the light on forever, sort of like a power indicator? ALL my previous laptops have some sort of power LED just so you can at least tell it's on. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I noticed when I put my new MBP 15" to sleep, there is a little black dot inside the sleep light. I know it's a minor issue, but is this normal?
If not normal, is it possible dust got inside? Would I be able to blow aerosol air in that area if I remove the bottom plate?

I've got pretty old MB that was bought back in 2007, and it's been working ok up until today. All of a sudden I can not boot it, the screen stays black. Whenever I turn it on the screen flashs for ~100ms and then remains black, at the same time the sleep mode light is on and off not gredually fading in and out like when it is in sleep mode but sharply. Safe boot didn't help, PRAM reset didn't help, booting into the firmware (CMD-OPT-O-F) didn't work as the screen stays black. . I can hear hard drive working but other then that I see no signs of life (even caps lock and num lock keys don't get highlighted when I press them)

I have a 13 in. black MacBook (late 2006) and somehow have managed to break it. Last year I had trouble where the computer randomly messed up how it booted and I had to use live Linux cd's to recover my data. I had to completely wipe the drive that time. Things went blissfully on until yesterday when it froze, after waiting for at least a minute when I held the power button down to kill it. I tried to restart but it froze on the apple with the spinning progress indicator. I killed again, and started in single user mode, where I got a plethora of disk0 I/O errors. After waiting there a while the computer stopped doing anything so I killed again. Now, it doesn't even recognize the fact that the hard drive exists. I am able to boot a Linux cd but there is no hard drive anywhere. All help is great as I don't want to keep using this win7 computer.

with the keyboard. I was so happy! That is, until I closed the lid to make it sleep. That's when something horrifying happens. The Apple logo flickers after a little noise from the SuperDrive. It's as if it doesn't really want to go to sleep, but the little light is glowing.I'm really concerned; I do not want to send this one in to Apple again. The process is too long to bare without my MacBook!

I can't for the life of me find those dock indicator lights that are bright blue and shaped like power indicators, like the logo on the MBP power button.
I had them before and have been searching for an hour and cannot find them anywhere.

my first night with my new Macbook was last night! All is great so far, just one questions though. When I was in the bed las night, the apple logo was so darn bright in the bedroom it woke the wife up once! Can I turn that sucker down a little for night time use, or should I position the pillow to cover the back up?

I am running an emac with OS X 10.4 installed (I think). Anyway, I've been searching all morning for a solution in the forums, but haven't really seen or been able to solve my problem.
The computer was shut down correctly over the weekend, there are no grinding noises, no error messages, the screen is just stuck on that grey screen with the apple and progress wheel and won't finish booting up all the way.
It's happened once before, but I just did a hard restart on it, and it has worked fine ever since. Never had any real problems until now, but nothing I have tried from searching on the forums has worked (apple X, option control, restarts, etc.). It won't boot up in any kind of safe mode, that I can figure out.
Is there something I am missing, or not trying, or am I just toast?

I know this is kind of off topic and the logo does not make the product any different but I found it a little odd that Apple decided to not to put their logo on the remote. It's made out of aluminum and has enough space on the back for a logo to be present. Apple put's their logo on everything that has enough space for one. The old remote had it, mouse, keyboard, MacBook/MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, iPod's, iPhone, docks, and gift cards all have it. Their earphones don't have it because they are to small to put a logo without making them look stupid. I wonder what Jonathan Ive and Jobs were thinking when they decided to not put the logo. The back of the remote almost seems bare without it.

I did a search on this topic, but no results.
Has anyone here tried/done this to their MacBook? The site that sells it say it is extremely difficult. MacBook Pro is easier. I like to hear your input if you've attempted this.

Disk Utility in OS X gave me a Invalid key length after checking Catalog file, so I restarted to OS X Install DVD. It did the same thing on the OS X Install DVD. I went to Startup Disk, changed it back to the Mac OS X on Macintosh HD option - so I could go in and back my stuff up. It just goes to apple logo, does the spin thing at the bottom, and goes black. I can't even boot from DVD anymore.

I have a major problem with my first Generation MacBook Pro. It won't boot anymore: it just turns on and gets stuck at the Apple logo. There is no spinning wheel and nothing else happens. Pressing 'C' for booting from CD or pressing ALT and choosing the CD as an alternative boot source does not work either: it just does exactly the same, gets stuck at the apple logo. I already tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM, as well as the SMC. This also did not change anything. CMD+V mode starts up then stops at the line "ACPI: System State [S0 S3 S4 S5] (S3)"
What can I do? I really need to save my Mac, there is some really important stuff on there

So I just bought a Seagate momentus XT HDD for my 2010 i7 15" MBP. I clonded the drive using Super Duper from the old drive (500GB Toshiba) to the new drive using a USB SATA enclosure.
I now have the new drive installed. Once the Apple logo shows up it boots very fast, but it takes like 30 seconds for the logo to show up almost as if it is having trouble finding the boot drive.
I have run Onyx's full automated service whihc verified startup disk, verified and repaired permissions, emptied caches, etc.

My MacBook Pro started Experiencing this today... for the first time it completely crashed, and the screen got filled with green lines... I restarted it and when the Apple logo came up, it had some stripes in it, and won't start the system due to "System Failure" or something like that... I managed to get through it, but then it happened again and now it's for good. I can start the system, but when it comes to passing the Apple logo it just crashes and the screen is filled with green stripes. I wish I could screen shot it, but it mysteriously disappeared on my last attempt to turn the system on... and when it happens it just freezes the system.

I was working on a project in xcode that an error poped saying it can't save the file, after that mac os just hanged, so I restarted it, but it couldn't get pass the apple logo, so I booted the recovery partition and tried the disk utility and it said there was a problem with the startup partition, so I tried the repair volume, but it didn't work, saying there was a write problem, so I tried to reformat it and then restore it to time machine backup, but it didn't work, so I removed the hard from my laptop and used a sata to usb enclosure and insert it to another mac and I formated the hard and reinstalled mac on it. when the hard is connected to usb I can boot from it and use it, but when I put it in the macbook it just can't boot from it. I figure there's a write problem with the serial-ATA.
