OS X :: Snow Leopard Shutdown - Blue Screen And Progress Wheel Just Spinning

Mar 4, 2010

I upgraded to Snow Leopard and a few days later when i went to shutdown my mac pro after i woke it up, i got the blue screen and progress wheel just spinning. After calls with Apple, running both long and short hardware tests, 3 snow leopard discs, a clean install, 2 upgrades, the tech gave up. The clean install was a bare bones install with no applications installed. I would now have to take it into a repair shop and pay for software tests. This is a one year old mac pro with apple care. I used Time Machine to restore to leopard, and all is ok. Has anyone heard of this problem? I'm quit happy to stick with Leopard, but am upset that an apple software problem has to be fixed and paid for by me. I assume if it was a hardware problem it would show up in Leopard.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Blue Screen And Spinning Wheel At Startup

Apr 1, 2012

I had permission problems (locked time machine drive) so I did a full time machine restore.

Did the restart after the restore. Machine won't reboot. I get 'bong', apple logo on grey screen as per normal.

Then blue screen and spinning wheel for approx 7 seconds Then blue screen and black pointer for approx 2 seconds The blue screen spinning wheel / black pointer repeats. Also can't start up from Snow Leopard DVD.

I get exactly the same scenario. I have held down the power key at got the tone. Still won't start. It's an Imac (white one) 1.8Gig Dual with 1.5 gig of ram.

Running Snow leopard. I can see my disc over the ethernet; it is still there as it was sharing with my other machine.

1: Just wiped drive and re-installed OS X Lion 10.7.3.

2: Upgrade iTunes from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3.

3: Restart, normally & fast.

4: Open iTunes.

5: Close iTunes.

6: Shutdown, and get the grey screen and spinning wheel...30min...1hr...2hr...I HAVE TO PRESS THE POWER BUTTON.

Why? Is it a bug in OS X Lion or iTunes 10.5.3?(mid 2010 MacBook Pro 371, OS X 10.7.3)

MacBook Pro :: 15 Inch Can't Switch Off (freeze At Blue Screen With Spinning Wheel)?

Feb 12, 2012

Whenever i try to "shut down" my MBP, it will freeze at the blue screen with the spinning wheel (that keeps spinning like 'eternally')! Any idea how to solve the problem? I tried booting from the installation disk and repairing disk with "disk utility" but to no avail. Have also tried repairing disk permissions... Any idea how else should i tackle this problem?  Currently i can only switch off my MBP by holding the power button (forcing it to shut down).

Intel Mac :: Won't Start - Get Apple Logo With Spinning Wheel, Question Mark That Disappears And Then Blank Blue Screen?

Jul 1, 2012

My daughter's old I Mac won't start. It is not backed up.  We want to get some things off of it if we can. When we turn it on, we get the Apple logo with spinning wheel for awhile, then a question mark briefly and then a sky blue blank screen.  Is there any hope of getting this to work?  This computer is out of warranty.  Does it seem that if we reinstall the Operating System we might find old data?

OS X :: Snow Leopard Occasional Freeze With Spinning Color Wheel?

Sep 17, 2009

I bought my first uMbp the day Snow Leopard came out. Unfortunately, it was not installed on the uMbp. So upon running the mbp for the first time, I proceeded to install SL.

Now occasionally, maybe a once every other day, whenever I open up a few applications like Word or maybe even a new tab in Firefox, everything would freeze and the spinning color wheel would spin for about 30 or so seconds and everything would resume to normal.

Now I ask, is this normal behavior? I have the 2.26ghz uMBP edition with 2gb of ram.

Should I go ahead and do a clean re-install?

OS X :: Unable To Reinstall Snow Leopard / Slow System With Waiting Spinning Wheel

Jul 29, 2010

Today, I decided to reinstall Mac OS X Snow Leopard on my iMac, to have a fresh & new copy of Mac OS. I've done this before on my Macbook, and it worked perfectly. The iMac would not read the original Reinstall DVD that came with it. Instead, it would eject it, though it would work it on another Mac. But when I inserted my Snow Leopard disk that I bought separately, it worked.

However, when I entered the reinstall screen, it is extremely slow and I nearly can't use it. I did already use the Disk Utility to erase the hard disk files. So, it is extremely slow, and it wouldn't install either. All I get is the amour of time left, but it doesn't change, just gives me a waiting spinning wheel. It's been stuck on the screen for several hours.

The iMac was bought in January, I believe. What should I do?? This is very weird. Should I take it to the Apple Store, or is there a way to fix it?

OS X :: Grey Screen With Apple/progress Indicator Wheel?

Dec 7, 2009

I am running an emac with OS X 10.4 installed (I think). Anyway, I've been searching all morning for a solution in the forums, but haven't really seen or been able to solve my problem.

The computer was shut down correctly over the weekend, there are no grinding noises, no error messages, the screen is just stuck on that grey screen with the apple and progress wheel and won't finish booting up all the way.

It's happened once before, but I just did a hard restart on it, and it has worked fine ever since. Never had any real problems until now, but nothing I have tried from searching on the forums has worked (apple X, option control, restarts, etc.). It won't boot up in any kind of safe mode, that I can figure out.

Is there something I am missing, or not trying, or am I just toast?

PowerPC :: EMac Stuck At Grey Screen & Spinning Progress Indicator?

Feb 23, 2008

Greetings and saluations everyone. I've recently delved into the OSX world via secondhand eMac. The specs are eMac (2006 - not a typo... this is what it says)/1.42gHz/80GB HDD/1GB ram/etc. It came equipped with 10.4.6, did an update to the software and it brought the machine to 10.4.11.

After a week or so of tinkering, I think I have accidentally deleted some very necessary system files. Given that the computer did not come with any manuals or recovery discs, I've been doing some major digging over the last three days via internet and can not come up with a fix for my new love. I saw this post on MacRumors and it nearly is exactly what I'm experiencing: Mac chimes upon pressing of start button, goes to greyish screen with grey Apple logo and a spinning progress indicator then the computer goes silent (no HDD/CD activity)... yet keeps the active grey screen.

I've tried booting into safe mode but to no avail which leads me to think I've accidentally deleted some extremely necessary boot files. However, I do not remember emptying the trash during the last successful boot... is there a way from a command line prompt to "put the files back" to where they go?

I've downloaded several Mac OSX Leopard torrents but can't get them to boot off of USB drive, DVD RW external drive, external USB hard drive nor via OSX 9 CD ... Indeed, I am trying to burn from windows but have learned of several utilities which create ISOs in Mac Format and will decompress DMG files (ISOBuster & TransMac).

Please... will someone give me some good news? For example, telling me there is a way to boot from USB drive (and in what format the mac needs to boot - ISO? DMG? Expanded file system in appropriate directory folders? I don't care about wiping the hard drive... that's absolutely fine... I just need a working system again.

IMac :: Screen Stuck On Spinning Wheel?

Nov 13, 2010

I was away at a friend's yesterday and left my computer on and downloading a torrent (I have done this before and everything has been fine). When I came back today, I noticed that my computer was working very slowly so I restarted it. However, it would just stay at the grey screen with the wheel spinning forever instead of moving on to the blue screen.

I know that this has been reported many times before, even on this forum, but everything I tried does not work. I tried:

Holding down Command+S at startup and entering the command fsck -fy. Did not fix the problem
Opening the Install Disc and going into Disk Utility. I repaired the permissions and verified that the HD has no problems but the problem persisted.

Going into Safe Mode. This actually works fine, but unfortunately offers an extremely limited functionality of my computer.

When I turned it on the next time it would not boot up. Gray screen withe the spinning wheel of bars like it is thinking, searching, and longing to start up. Booted from the install cd to access the hd, but it acts like it wants to install the os fresh.

MacBook Pro :: Stuck At The Spinning Wheel / Grey Screen?

Aug 13, 2010

So all of the sudden my mbp will not boot past the spinning wheel/apple screen. I have not let it try for longer than 15 minutes but I don't see the point. I tried to boot in safe mode(hold down shift) but the bar only went to about 1/3 and stopped/disappeared...so I don't know what to do. This shouldn't be happening after a couple months of light use.

Just for extra info:

I am able to boot into windows 7 via boot camp. Cannot boot from cd or go into safe mode.

MacBook :: Perpetually See A Grey Screen And Spinning Wheel?

Apr 28, 2012

A few months ago my 2004 iMac froze as I was simply shutting down the power and attempting to restart. I was not installing any new O/S.Today I attempted two things while booting with the O/S recovery disc-1: (a) I slid the disc in and held down the "C" key while I attempted to power it on. Nothing happened and I continued to see the grey screen and spinning wheel.

(b) I slid the disc inside and held down the "ALT" key while I attempted to power it on. Three icons showed up: (a) Hard Disk; (b) Recovery Disc; and (c) Test. I clicked on the Test icon and it took me to a new screen with two options: ( i ) Quick Test and ( ii ) Extended Test. I clicked on Quick Test. The first aspect of the Quick Test (I think it was Airport) went through fine and passed. The second aspect of the Quick Test (Logic Board testing) continued to show "In Progress" for a really long time (about 15 mins.). From that I figured something must have gone wrong with the Logic Board.

MacBook Pro :: Apple Startup Screen Spinning Wheel?

I rebooted my MacBook Pro (15", i7).  When the system started back up, I got a status bar at the bottom of the screen.  It took approx two minutes for the status bar to move to completion (almost like it was performing a BIOS update).  I then got the gray spinning wheel (gray backdrop, darker gray Apple logo).  I tried holding down the CMD and Option keys during a subsequent reboot....nothing changes.
