MacBook :: External Screen - Mini DVI -> DVI-D -> VGA?
Dec 31, 2010
I have bought an old Macbook mainly to try some iPhone development. However I love OS X and have used the Macbook quite a lot for other things, including watching DVDs. I would therefore like to show the picture on an external screen.
I have a "Mini DVI to DVI-D" cable and bought a "DVI-D to VGA" adaptor. But this doesnt seem to work with my Samsung VGA LCD PC Screen - the picture is always blank.I just found a note on Wikipedia stating that the analog signal isn't carried by the mini DVI cable that I have.Do I need another cable?I take it the external screen can be used at the same time as the internal screen? I don't want or need an external keyboard/mouse.

Have a new Mac Mini, using an external drive but I can't get it to show up in finder. It's a Lacie 1TB Porsche design HDD, using a USB connection directly into the mini. I tried it at first by connecting to an open usb on my cinema display..no good. Also no good when connected directly into the mini.

My old Mini is in the next room to the wireless DSL modem. It gets one to three max bars, usually two, and it's just through one interior wall. I don't want to spend a bunch of money, I just want to get a little better reception in the next room. I have seen USB wifi antennas advertised. Would that do anything for me? My iBook G4 in the same spot gets full reception no problem.

Soo...I just picked up a mini to run plex and use as a media center. Hooking it up to my projector via VGA cable. When I set the display settings to the native resolution on the projector there is a small black line or bar down the left hand side of the screen. Not on the right but only on the left. why this would be happening?

As I am looking around at all the usb 2.5" drives I have laying around, I was wondering if there is a limit to the number of bus powered drives that the Mac Mini could run at one time.
I have never run more than one self powered drive on a computer before - so I was wondering if there was a limit that the Firewire/USB bus power can support.
Ideally I would love to be able to run one bus powered firewire 800 drive, and three usb bus powered drives - I'm just not sure if that is possible or advisable...

I've had my Macbook for about 3 years and have always been able to connect it up to my external monitor using a mini dvi cable.
A couple of weeks ago my hard drive died and since using the new one I cannot connect.
The external monitor shows my wallpaper but nothing else, no desktop, no dock etc...

Have a MDD that always needs the surge protector shut off then back on to start it.I had installed a Western Digital 750GB drive in it.It has Tiger on it with all of my docs and pictures etc.Have been scared of using the MDD and bought an Early 2009 Mini to replace it.The mini only has a 120GB drive (and 4GB RAM) and I don't want it to get filled up.It had Leopard and I upgraded it to Snow Leopard. Some of my Tiger software can't be upgraded to SL, so I'd need to use the MDD drive to access it.Can the HD be used as an external drive and booted from the Mini with Firewire in order to use Tiger? Currently, I'm using a USB drive with the Mini to save docs and pics on, but it's getting to be a pain because some stuff isn't on it and have to change USB drives.
As others have said, the Mini blows the doors off the MDD!I maxed out the MDD to 2GB of RAM and thought it was fast. The Mini's runs circles around it!

I own a MBP 13 that I wish to connect with my Acer external mobitor. I bought a miniDisplayport to HDMI [male] cable for this purpose. Now the problem I am facing is that even though my 40" Samsung TV detects the MBP and works as an extended monitor, the MBP fails to detect the Acer monitor. However, I currently use the Acer monitor with my Mac Mini, Tata Sky+ set top box and also my Playstation 3

I have a 15" unibody MBP bought in Nov '08.
Had been using the Mini Displayport > DVI adapter just fine with both HDTV and Dell monitor, BUT then all output has stopped completely!
No monitor is detected by the laptop (although the display does blink blue, as if it had detected it), tried different cables, different displays, using the Displayport firmware update, speaking to Apple, deleting the com.apple..plist files, etc
Edit: it also doesn't work in XP on Bootcamp!!!?
None have worked even a bit!.. Also read lots of forum posts of similar problems, but I can't find a solution that works!

In a few months I will be setting up a booth at a comic convention and I would like to have two monitors running on the table to showcase the art. I have a 17" MBP Unibody with one external 24" monitor via the mini-DV - DVI cable. I would like to attach another 24" as well. These two monitors only have to mirror what I am doing on the screen so I just need a cheap solution.

I had not used my external monitor in the last several weeks. I believe there have been a few OSX Lion updates since the last time I used the external monitor. I had installed all the updates prior to connecting my external monitor again. However, a few days ago I tried to connect the external monitor and all I get is a "No Signal" message on my external monitor. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI works on my LCD TV, so I know the MDP works. I have also replaced the MDP-to-DVI cord and the external display still doesn't work.
I connected the external monitor to another computer running Snow Leopard and the external monitor works. So, the external monitor does work.
I have seen a few posts aboout this, but nobody seems to have a solution that works or is directly on point to my issue. I have tried to use all the scenarios for plugging in the external monitor and external monitor power. I tried to reboot the laptop with and withoout the external monitor connected. Same thing with the exteernal monitor plugged in and no power, etc. Nothing works. I have tried to repeatedly turn the external monitor on and off while connected to the MacBook. Again, that doesn't work. Here is what I am running:

OSX 10.7.3
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

A couple weeks ago, I lost the ability to remote in to my Mac mini from my MacBook Pro. However, using the Remoter VNC app. On my iPhone and iPad, I can connect to no problem. The app is configured to log in to the Mac mini using the new Lion method of user name and password. Both Macs were running 10.7.3 and I upgraded them to 10.7.4 yesterday, and it still won't connect from my MacBook.

I have a presentation tomorrow and need to hook up my MBP to the projector in class. I bought an Apple Mini Displayport to DVI cable, and a DVI to DVI cable. I thought this would be the case, but come to find out the system does not support DVI. So I had to run to Best buy to get a DVI to VGA cable. I tried out the MDP > DVI > VGA rig on my external monitor and got nothing. The screen on my MBP responded by turning blue for a second and then back to normal...but the monitor said "No Signal". Is this some jargon with DVI-D and DVI-I? I need to know by tomorrow morning if I have to run back to the Apple Store and get a Mini Displayport to VGA cable.

I have been getting a very strange display issue with my new Mac Mini (2.53/4gb).The screen highlights pulse colors and seem to be getting "blown out" whenever I go for the dock, especially when I am playing video. I have made some videos for example.
Video examples: [URL]
I can recreate this issue on both the mini-display & mini-DVI ports going to DVI. I have also tried on multiple screens and have had the same issues. Could this be an issue with the video card? I also did a full hardware check with the Apple Hardware Test from the install CD. Everything checked out OK.

I have recently bought a 13" Macbook Pro and wanted to hook up an external display (an oldish acer 19"). I have a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter hooked up to a DVI -VGA adapter which leads to the display. I haven't got it to work yet. I have followed advice about closing the lid and using usb mouse and keyboard with no luck. The only thing that happens is that the screen on the laptop flashes blue for about a second after plugging in the Mini DisplayPort adapter.

I bought a MBA 13" last month and now I'm trying to connect an external monitor through a Mini Display Port-to-HDMI adapter and most of the times the display shows a message "No signal detected"...
I've tried all the possible combinations between the MAC and the Monitor but it would seem a random matter.

I just hooked the cable up, and I get the standard Purple Haze in space desktop that I have on my Macbook, but nothing else. No icons, no toolbars, nothing. The only time I was able to get anything to come up on my larger screen was when I went into Preferences, and Desktop and Screensaver. When I click on that, I did get a box to show up on my larger screen, listed as the Secondary Desktop.
How exactly do I get the larger screen to serve as my main screen? When I close up my laptop, the larger screen goes blank. I have no idea what to do, please help!
Another question I have is how the screen will look once I do actually get it to work. The reason why I ask that is because my larger screen is an old 17" Dell, the old 4:3 box kind. I plan on upgrading to a 20" plus HD display in the near future, but cannot at the moment, so the current 17" will have to do.
Anyhow, just curious if the screen is going to be completely wonky looking given the resolution that my Macbook will be feeding it?

So I've been helping this guy do stuff with his mac (MBP 3,1, 2.4GHz dual-core, 2GB DDR2 RAM w/667 bus) and lately he's had a problem where his computer freezes totally and you have to reboot. I was working with him today and it froze while I had address book (which had stopped responding) and finder open. He always has a second screen (one of the big apple monitors that uses the video port, a USB, and a firewire 400) and an external Firewire 800 harddrive, with external power-source, for backup always plugged in.
The machine is only like 2 years old and he has over 70 GB left on his harddrive. Is it possible that always having the external monitor and external disk is draining resources and making the computer run slower? If this is the case, will this model MBP hold more than 2GB, and if it does, does it come with two 1GB modules, or one 2GB module? The next time I see him I'm gonna install MenuMeters to see if his resources are being used a lot with the stuff plugged in.

Hi I'm connecting an external monitor to my macbook pro and am experiencing regular vertical lines throughout the external screen. I've tried DVI-D and VGA. I've tried changing resolutions. I have taken a screen shot of the monitor but this screen shot shows a clear image. Attached is a picture of what it looks like. Hard to spot as taken with my isight. (Ignore the cable hanging down).

I work on the macbook between 90min-2 hours throughout the day. At home, I hook up to a twenty-four inch monitor that I had calibrated through a Windows based system and complete my work. Now the files that I am working on are being processed through the macbook but viewed on the external monitor. I don't really care about the calibration of the macbook because the work that I am doing on it without the external monitor is really not color related i.e. removing scabs off of children, removing hair off of the face ect, but I need the final image to be accurate before it is sent off to the lab.
So, what do I need to do? Calibrate the macbook and the monitor or just the monitor and if just the monitor can anyone walk me through this? I know I could "search" but switching over from windows has been an experience and honestly, I am tired of "searching". Speaking of searching, I am still trying to figure out a way to sync my Dell x50v to the macbook, anyone? I know the x50v is old but it is the most solid piece of windows hardware I have ever owned and it still "just works".

I have a white MB (early 2008). I'm going to be getting an external monitor soon with a native resolution of 1920x1200 - the highest that the MB's Intel GMA X3100 will support. I know that I can open System Preferences > Display and then click the little menubar and drag it to the other monitor to make it the primary. Here is the thing: I want to just use my 24" monitor and not use the MB's screen with it (I have an external keyboard and mouse).
Should I...
1. Use the two displays as an extended desktop and then (leave the MacBook lid open) just turn the brightness on the MB all the way off so the screen is black (no back light)?
or...
2. Just close the MacBook and use it in clam shell mode? I watch Hulu and YouTube a lot which causes the CPU load to increase and fans to spin up.... do I have to worry about over heating? I would be using the 24" monitor exclusively all the time and then take the MB when I go to class. Will this just ruin my MB pre-maturely?
