Jun 23, 2010The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable).The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results.The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

Dec 6, 2010I've had my Macbook for about 3 years and have always been able to connect it up to my external monitor using a mini dvi cable.
A couple of weeks ago my hard drive died and since using the new one I cannot connect.
The external monitor shows my wallpaper but nothing else, no desktop, no dock etc...

Now the problem I am facing is that even though my 40" Samsung TV detects the MBP and works as an extended monitor, the MBP fails to detect the Acer monitor. Mac Mini :: Driver For MAC Mini For A Samsung Monitor 2333SW?
Feb 23, 2009Just bought a Samsung 2333SW Monitor and plugged it into my Mac Mini. The screen looks like the monitor was dropped (psychedelic) when the desktop is displayed. It worked fine on my 17" Samsung monitor, but not the 23".
I exchanged the monitor, and its not the monitor. I was told its the driver on the Mac. I cannot find any driver online for my Mini through Apple, or even at the Samsung sites.

Had been using the Mini Displayport > DVI adapter just fine with both HDTV and Dell monitor, BUT then all output has stopped completely!
No monitor is detected by the laptop (although the display does blink blue, as if it had detected it), tried different cables, different displays, using the Displayport firmware update, speaking to Apple, deleting the com.apple..plist files, etc
Edit: it also doesn't work in XP on Bootcamp!!!?
None have worked even a bit!.. Also read lots of forum posts of similar problems, but I can't find a solution that works!

Aside from apple.com tutorials and playing around a few times at my local BestBuy I know very little about using them (or any computer for that matter). Between this forum, available books, and ease of use I figure it'll all work out. I do have a couple of specific questions and would greatly appreciate some advice.For me I have to go mini because I have an eye disease, and some other eye related issues that make me extremely sensitive to the LED backlit glossy displays that the imac and macbooks use. Even when dimmed. So I have no choice if I am to own a mac now, it's mac mini or nothing.

One exception seems to be the 27" model connected via mini-Display Port.However, I'd been hoping to connect an older (G4/DVI) Mini to a new (21.5") iMac, to use the iMac as a monitor.The only semi-hack solution I've seen is to use Screen Recycler or similar software. I have two questions, though:-Can Screen Recycler be used to mirror a desktop, not just extend it? (all info I've seen talks only about extending/2nd monitor, not mirroring).

I tried it at first by connecting to an open usb on my cinema display..no good. Also no good when connected directly into the mini.

Apr 15, 2012My old Mini is in the next room to the wireless DSL modem. It gets one to three max bars, usually two, and it's just through one interior wall. I don't want to spend a bunch of money, I just want to get a little better reception in the next room. I have seen USB wifi antennas advertised. Would that do anything for me? My iBook G4 in the same spot gets full reception no problem.

Mar 16, 2009As I am looking around at all the usb 2.5" drives I have laying around, I was wondering if there is a limit to the number of bus powered drives that the Mac Mini could run at one time.
I have never run more than one self powered drive on a computer before - so I was wondering if there was a limit that the Firewire/USB bus power can support.
Ideally I would love to be able to run one bus powered firewire 800 drive, and three usb bus powered drives - I'm just not sure if that is possible or advisable...
Mac Mini :: IPad As A Monitor For "headless" Mini?
Jun 15, 2010With the announcement of the new Mini's, I'm considering selling my MBP and ATV and replacing them with a new Mini and iPad.
My wife already has an iPad so it would be great to solely control the Mini with our iPads but do you new a keyboard and mouse for initial installation or at any point after? It really would be a waste of money to have to buy them just to get the thing running.
Is there an app out there that can act a full BT keyboard if need be? Rowmote looks pretty sweet for day-to-day use.
That said, I don't think the Mini would get much use, the iPads would be our main net/mail/cal/etc companions, the Mini would simply be the mothership, holding all our music, videos, etc. I still need a full computer for all my photo and home movie editing, otherwise I'd consider a beaten up old powerbook or iBook.
Also, what would be the advantage of getting OSX Server? If it helps, we have no other computers in the house, only 2 iPhones and 2 iPads (potentially).
MacBook :: Can't Make Monitor On Mini Display Port Primary Monitor?
Aug 18, 2010I have a fresh install of Windows XP, service pack 2 on a boot camp partition on my macbook (13" first gen aluminum case) and a Apple LED Cinema Display attached to the mini display port.
I can't seem to make the Cinema Display the primary display (the "Use this device as the primary monitor" checkbox is always greyed out in the Display Property Settings tab). I also can't shut the macbook lid and continue to use it closed (with kb, mouse and monitor attached) like I would when booting OSX.
Is there some other way to make the Cinema Display the primary monitor, so I can leave the macbook closed when booting into Windows?

Feb 26, 2012Have a MDD that always needs the surge protector shut off then back on to start it.I had installed a Western Digital 750GB drive in it.It has Tiger on it with all of my docs and pictures etc.Have been scared of using the MDD and bought an Early 2009 Mini to replace it.The mini only has a 120GB drive (and 4GB RAM) and I don't want it to get filled up.It had Leopard and I upgraded it to Snow Leopard.Some of my Tiger software can't be upgraded to SL, so I'd need to use the MDD drive to access it.Can the HD be used as an external drive and booted from the Mini with Firewire in order to use Tiger? Currently, I'm using a USB drive with the Mini to save docs and pics on, but it's getting to be a pain because some stuff isn't on it and have to change USB drives.
As others have said, the Mini blows the doors off the MDD!I maxed out the MDD to 2GB of RAM and thought it was fast. The Mini's runs circles around it!

Apr 14, 2009Iv always used a PC but getting more into and used to a mac with the mini...have it hooked up to my 32" LCD...I like certain things my Dell that I enjoy which I would compromise or miss out on mac....I can always run windows cause I know certain programs like my windows mobile phones cant sync I heard...I also have a TV card built into my dell which I use sometimes...and I could have swore someone said you can do that on MAC but im finding you you cannot...and I would miss the SD card readers built in but you can get the usb...
I guess im kind of lost cause I have a mac mini 2ghz 2gb ram 120gb hard drive which is fine for me I dont use it as a primary PC just more as a surf the net and download HD movies kind of thing...is it pointless to get an IMAC if i have a mac mini and better to keep one actual PC in the house?

Sep 12, 2010I have an Early 2009 Mac Mini with Mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort. And I have two 1080p HDTVs. The Mac Mini is capable of dual display, and I've gotten it to work before, so the issue is not the TV or Mac. And I have tried both Mirroring and No Mirroring.
I got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (#5311) and a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter (#4852) both from MonoPrice. And for some reason I can't get the Mac Mini to dual display, it's only one or the other.
Before I had a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male AUDIO to HDMI Female Converting Adapter (#5969) and I got video on both HDTVs, but not audio at the same time b/c one was USB and one was TOSLINK.
I'm not sure why I can't get video on both monitors. Any help?

Apr 6, 2009I need to connect my 09' Mac Mini to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which outputs to my Sony XBR HDTV. I know the mini has both mini-dvi to dvi and mini-dp to dvi or hdmi available via adapters. I was thinking to go with option 1 however I was wondering what is your opinions? Is mini-display port better over mini-dvi or are they the same? Audio will be carried over optical toslink.
Option 1:
Using mini-dvi adapter to dvi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.
Option 2:
Using mini-dp adapter to dvi or hdmi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.
Mac Mini :: Mini Or IMac - Moving From PC
Dec 19, 2008I've had enough of PCs and problems with Windows (Vista SP1 has completely screwed my PC and I've had enough of wasting my time trying to fix such things), hence I am considering moving to a mac.
A couple of friends have Macs and have only been saying good things about them and that I won't regret moving across.
I'd kinda decided that the 24" iMac was best for me with the 3ghz processor, but now some one has suggested the mini might be better.
I have a decent spec PC and I'm a PC gamer (latterly a Wii gamer too!), so I would still like to play games on the Mac.
Typically I use my PC for games, surfing, Office stuff, getting pics off my camera and doing some graphics stuff (nothing major) and web development.
If I do get a Mac I'd also get the Apple TV.

Jan 9, 2010I have a 27" i7. I have a 24" DVI Montior hooked up to it via MDP->DVI adaptor. When the 24" Monitor is on, everything is fine. When I turn the monitor off, the magic mouse tracking on the 27" screen stutters. I am not kidding - it took me ages to figure out that to fix I either need to turn the other monitor on OR disconnect the MDP->DVI adaptor.
