My Dell u2711 is my primary display. Sometimes I wake up the macbook out of sleep mode and forget to have the lid shut. Consequently the Macbook screen comes on as well. Everything is working as it should but I am curious is there a quick way to switch the Macbook display on and off with the setup I have described?
View 11 RepliesMy external display (HP w2207) seems to conflict with my MacBook Pro (15 inch Retina display, early 2013) since I upgraded MacBook OS to 10.9.4.The external display works at initial boot of Mac but does not work after OS sleeps and I attempt to awaken, and while the external display is not waking, the Retina display flashes through different screen views, which only partially reflect my normal screen, or do not reflect my normal screen at all.Â

I need to be able to toggle my primary display between two monitors connected to my Mac Mini. I know that this is normally done by the following:Display Preference Pane -> Arrangement -> Drag the menu bar to the monitor your want as primary I'm looking for a hotkey or keyboard shortcut to toggle this more quickly. My graphics apps have to bind to the primary, but I also need to send full-screen output to the primary display, thus blocking the menu bar and dock.Â

All my MacBook Pro does is flicker 3 times for about 8 seconds that it goes back to normal.
I am attempting to use an external DVI monitor using the mini port port and the mini port DVI adapter sold by apple. However the screen display on the external monitor does not match the Mac book display. All I get is a color Mac opening screen with no icons.apparently there is more to getting an external monitor going then just plugging it in.

I have been using my MacBook with an external monitor since I brought it in 2011 and have had no problems with connecting it to my external monitor. Connected via mini display port DVI adapter and a DVI cable to a Philips monitor.
Two days ago when I plugged the MacBook back in to the monitor I connected and but now only displays a black screen, I can move the mouse off the MacBook screen and over to the external monitor and back but it is not displayed on the monitor. I have tried connecting other devices to the monitor and they work fine.

I have a MacBook Pro 13 for portability to my classes at the university and a Dell 2209WA as an external monitor. One of the few good IPS monitors I could find around for cheap.
The monitor works fine in mirror mode with the MacBook Pro, but as an external display only it does not work. It attempts to wake up and then you see power savings mode again and the screen goes black as if there was no connection. Not sure what exactly the problem here is. Drivers?
The monitor works great with a Mac Mini I have and it works great in mirror but not in external display mode(the lid of the MacBook Pro closed). Anybody know of this issue? The cable is good and the MacBook Pro is not that old(a few weeks).
Well my unibody macbook display decided to screw up last night, it was working fine last night no problem. Connected to a external monitor. I fell asleep last night with front row left on, obviously it went to sleep and then I woke up and the screen was black. Now the LED lights are working, my external display is also working. The display settings recognize a screen being present (when I click detect displays and gather windows - 2 windows appear). Ive reset PRAM, SMC, reseated the RAM, control+shift+eject (which just made the screen flicker a little after turning it back on) and Im out of ideas. Its out of warranty and about about 18months old.

Normally I have my MBP setup in extended desktop for when I connect my external monitor or connect to my TV (DVI->HDMI adaptor) for watching BBC iPlayer etc., however I want FR to run on the external monitor/TV if one is detected.

I am not interested in gaming or doing anything fancy just surfing the web and working on documents and maybe looking at movies. I already have a hack that enables me to use a regular display which doesn't mirror the iBook screen. I just wondered whether I would encounter problems using a wide screen display and what the maximum resolution I should look for.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just bought a tv to use as a external monitor for my mac however when i boot into windows 7 the resolution (1080p) is fine but its not filling the screen completely, there is 1 inch of black on the top and bottom and about 1.5 inches of black on the left and right sides. it does not do this when i am booted into osx.
i think this could be because of how hdtv's are made and the resolution isn't exact (usually a little bit greater) so windows isn't "stretching" the image to fill the screen. i think osx does it automatically but windows doesn't. if this is the problem how do i get windows to stretch the image? i tried switching the screen mode on my tv's remote but that didn't work.
I have a 27" imac and have been using an apple led cinema display with it. I have had no problems with the display until today. Yesterday I installed windows 7 via bootcamp and had some trouble with the second display being detected but after downloading all of the bootcamp updates it worked fine. Today I restart my computer back into OSX and the display does not work. I tried resetting the PRam or whatever but that didnt do anything. When I go to system preferences > display there is no longer an option to detect display and there are no longer options to change the screen resolution.
I spoke with an apple tech who has me installing an update but I dont think she really knew what was going on and I doubt this will work. When I reboot back into the windows partition the display works during start up and I see the windows logo. So I dont think its a hardware issue (also the display still works fine with my macbook pro). But as soon as startup finishes I get a black screen. Under the control panel windows still recognizes that there is a 2nd display attached and you can still drag items over to the other screen, I just cant see anything. All black.
I have a 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (24" early 2009) iMac running OS 10.7.3 (Lion) to which I have connected an Apple Cinema Display as an external monitor using a Mini Display-to-DVI adapter. The iMac is set to 1920 x 1200 resolution and the Cinema Display is at 1680 x 1050, and everything looks great until I turn on mirroring. When I do this, the iMac screen loses its nice crisp screen resolution, but the Cinema Display still looks fine. Strangely, the pull down menu for displays in the menu bar still claims that the iMac is at 1920 x 1200 and the Cinema Display is at 1680 x 1050, but I don't think this is the case. Is there any way to keep the iMac at the higher resolution while mirroring?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to write an AppleScript to change the resolution of my external display from 1920x1080 to 800x600 and back to 1920x1080 (it has a few issues and this fixes them, but I'm tired of going into System Preferences to do this all the time). I can get the script to open up System Preferences and option-click the scaled button (so all of the different resolutions come up), but I can't get it to select anything inside of the box where all of the different resolutions are (I can't find what I'm supposed to refer to it as anywhere and if I find something it doesn't work). Here's the code I have right now:

While using Google Sketchup and several other prgrams concurrently my macbook air cpu heats up substantiall. I like keeping the air "open" to allow for maximum heat disipation but of course this keeps the air screen on while I only want to use my external monitor. Is the only way to turn of the air screen turning down the brightness and using the "Mirror Display" option or is there another setting which alows my to utilize only the external display while the screen is open on the air?

As the title states. I am looking for an external display that matches the display on my black MacBook. I want one with the same gloss finish as my MacBook, this way I can calibrate both screens to look the same. That way when I switch screens it doesn't look different.
Anyone know of a screen that looks identical to the (previous generation) MacBook? I was thinking of getting a Samsung T240 but it has a different finish. How are ASUS screens? Any screens out there that have the same gloss finish?
i'm hoping someone can help me out on this little problemmy usual set up is a pair of speakers connected with jacks via an m-audio usb audio interface, with an external monitor connected via mini-dvi to dvi.now for some reason my audio interface has randomly broken (on a side note, could a power cut have somehow broken a usb peripheral connected to my macbook whilst it was asleep?) so i've hooked up my speakers to the line out to rca. Now for some reason, when i plug the mini dvi connector into my macbook i get an incredible amount of hum. not just a little, alot!

I have an external keyboard and trackpad hooked up, and I like to close my MBP up and stick it in a BookArc. I want to be able to have the internal display disabled and to have the MBP only allow me to put windows on the external display, so long as the lid is closed. I also want to be sure that I am taking advantage of the resolutions available on my external monitor, which are higher than those supported by the internal display (specifically 1440x900).Â
This doesn't seem to work because I either have to allow the MBP to continue to draw my desktop across both screens (internal and external), OR use the "mirror displays" mode, which restricts my resolution of my external monitor. This means I either forgoe the additional resolution benefits of my external monitor, or I end up with windows that fall off-the-cliff, so to speak, because they are drawn in the portion of the desktop that would be shown on my internal display (which is closed).Â
I've read the community support pages on using the MBP with an external monitor, most relevantly, this page. It simply recommends using the "mirror displays" option. However, this option, as I mentioned above, doesn't allow me to make use of the additional resolution, and my external display looks bad. how to keep the 13" MBP in closed clamshell position, with the internal display disabled, and use my external monitor at resolutions higher than those allowed by the 13" MBP but which are available to my external monitor when not in "mirror displays" mode?

I tried to use some software to test the display. I found when the screen goes to completely dark with the backlight on, the bottom side of my screen is brighter than other parts.... have u guys met any problem like that, or is this some problem with my MBA?
I am wondering that is it essential to connect power adaptor all the time while operating in closed calmshell mode? When I unpluged the cable it didn't work. Is there some way?

For the past few months i have been using an external display hooked up to my 12" powerbook g4. I have had it on a dual display mode so no mirroring. Recently i would open the laptop lid waking it from being in sleep mode and my internal display will not turn on. The apply system profiler does not even recognize that the internal display exists. My external display works fine and has always been set as the main display. If i go to detect displays nothign happens. I have tried restarting the computer, instering system disks, unplugging the external and nothing has worked. I simply cannot get my internal screen to fire back up. When i used to unplug my external display the internal display would switch back to being the main display and everything would be fine. Now i cannot get the internal display to function whatsoever. Please try and help me as a need this laptop working and i will be ordering a mac pro soon for use with my external display.

I have my 40" flat screen plugged into my imac via VGA cable to mirror the image.
I'm just trying to have the imac display sleep while I play a movie full screen through the external TV.
I've tried two different ways but both have failed.
1-I set up a hot corner in the imac to sleep display but this results in both the display and the TV sleeping.
2-I just set the power settings to sleep after 1 minute. This works but then If a movie is playing the computer won't go to sleep.
