Apr 28, 2012I run parallels a fair bit for research and my MBP is pretty slow. Took it to genius and he said to get a memory upgrade to 8GB. However, I'm reading everywhere that it can handle 16GB and the Crucial says it is compatible (only £100 ish for this so seems a pretty good deal). All well and good- but will this invalidate Apple care as the max Apple state it can handle is 8GB? Or.....is 8GB going to be enough anyway?Â

May 8, 2012Would my 2GB Core i5 Mini benefit massively from a huge memory upgrade? i currently have it processing photos and videos and music while i'm away and remote into it. It very slow on remote but I don't know why that is. Slow as in almost unusable. Would the memory help it? speed it up? speed up my access to it?

Jun 12, 2012I ordered a retina MacBook Pro base model. I figured I'd only need 8GB but then after I cast my order into the depths of Apple, I was thinking I should have got the 16GB upgrade. But on one hand, I was wondering if the RAM is user-replaceable or do they solder it on the boards now? I can buy another 8GB stick from a 3rd party.

May 13, 2012I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro with 8 GB of RAM installed - I bought the Corsair memory from Amazon for under $50 and installed it myself. Amazon now has a 16GB kit fro Corsair for only $100 - the least expensive price I've found. The only RAM intensive app I really run is Photoshop CS6,but I do keep a lot of apps open at one time (Acrobat Pro X, Outlook, InDesign CS6, Illustrator CS6, Word, Parallels running XP, iTunes at the moment) and I was wondering if the extra RAM would actually help me out. I'm looking for some advice from people who have already upgraded to 16 GB... can you actually tell a difference?

Jun 12, 2012I just bought a late 2011 17" MBP with 4GB RAM (standard).Having upgraded to Adobe CS6 I am finding the machine impossibly slow, so I figure I need more RAM. Apple says max = 8GB (2x4), but Crucial Memory recommend 16GB "guaranteed compatible". I'm now quite unsure: can I really put 16GB in? Are Apple wrong? If Crucial have sold loads of 16GB kits that can't be used, surely they'd have taken it off their website? Can anyone confirm whether I can put 16GB (i.e. you've actually done it successfully).I'm running Lion 10.7.4

Dec 26, 2010I recently got a new iMac (3.6 i5, 21.5") and want to upgrade the RAM myself.
I would like to get it up to 16 GB, but the cost of me getting that laa at once is a bit prohibitive. Is it possible for me to get an OWC 8 GB kit now and then add two more 4 GB sticks at a later time, or do they have to be matched or paired in some way?
Also, the iMac shipped with 4 GB of ram (on 2x2 GB sticks I am assuming). If I got an 8 GB kit, would it be possible for me to just add the 2x4 GB sticks and have 12 GB of RAM while I wait for more $ to get the rest of the 16 GB?

Aug 8, 2008I get kernel panics after a few min's of running the Mac pro. The ram are perfectly paired (2x 4gb in both slots, both in the first 2) and I get issues with it it seems. It started to happen as of today but didn't happen the days before. Nothing was changed in the configs or software.

OS X :: 7GB Dmg File Not Going On A 16GB Flash Drive?
Aug 11, 2009Ok it's like this, i recently bought my Mac and in preparation before i got it i stocked up certain apps i wanted on my Windows desktop, now I have a 7 GB dmg file that won't go on a 16GB flash drive and it's driving me crazy. I just don't know why it can't go, i re-formatted it and it still won't go.
Is there something I don't know about dmg files? are they actually larger than they appear, if not I need to find another means of transfering this file and all I have is this flash drive, no connector cables or anything like that.

Aug 5, 2010So I recently purchased a 16 GB iamakey from Lacie. I saw in an article in MacLife how to install a stripped down version of OS X on it to use as a rescue tool. I partitioned the drive into a 2gb and 14gb sections. The 2gb i want to use as just a flash drive for toting files. I installed OS X on the 14 GB section. The installation completes, but when I try to boot in, I just get a gray screen. The mouse can be seen. What went wrong? I have done this twice following the instructions.

I already have 8GB (2x 4GB) 1066MHz RAM installed.I do very intensive photoshop art (the saved PSD files usually exceed 1GB, and while the document is open in Photoshop, it can exceed 5GB -- but of course PSD files cannot be saved over 2GB so I usually have to delete unused layers to reduce its size). I usually end up using more than 8GB of RAM for this (image files, with multiple layers, layer styles, etc, at 24,000 x 12,000 pixels of resolution, even in 8-bit 8GB of RAM is not enough).I need more RAM, but I do not want to buy a new iMac just for this.
I know the official maximum is 8GB (4GBx2) which is what I have, but I know that when this model was released, there were no 8GB RAM easily accessible. Now there is, for under $200.I want to upgrade to two 8GB sticks, to instease the RAM to 16GB, which would be exactly what I need.

where they state that the max RAM is 16GB. Do they KNOW something? This would throw up in the air all my thinking about which MacPro to buy.
I am an old Mac hand (and before, Apple IIe, IIc, then Mac 128, 512, Plus, Se, IIx.... to a Dual G5 1.8GHz now), but a total newbie as far as Intel is concerned, so please pardon me if my conjectures are completely off whack, and for the large number of questions.
Looking at the ill assorted (in my view, particularly pricewise) lineup of the latest Pros, I have come up with the following ideas:
- Buy a quad 2.66 with up to 8Gb and be happy for the time being (I have 2.5GB now), with better single thread performance than the 2.26 and still 8 thread performance available WHEN there will be apps to use it (none/few of those I use do, as far as I read around, in any case, and even those seem to stop at 2/4 cores anyway).
- IF the 4GB sticks work (I know this is a big if, but given what I just found, there might be hope....), buy them at a later stage when they come down to an acceptable price and get to 16. I see a lot being written around along the lines �Even if they work, they cost more than the computer today.... etc, but RAM prices normally go down fast, so is this really an issue (except if you need 16GB NOW, of course)? And arent 8GB sticks likely to appear later on to get it to 32 if needed?
-Buy a used 2.93 or faster chip in 2-3 years. I have no idea of how cost effective this has historically been. Do prices go down significantly, or am I likely to get in the ballpark of the delta with a used, faster machine, as it often happened in the past with CPU upgrades?
-Are future chips likely to be compatible with the current machine (can someone who understand the Intel roadmap shed some light here?), or would I be limited to the 2.93 which is known to work?
-In case the 4Gb are proven to be unusable and I go for the octo, can changing chips work by replacing the 2.26 at a later stage? Knowing that I would need to buy 2, would the economics still work? It seems more unlikely, or is it?
-I remember reading about using the graphic card chip to reinforce computing power. Is this fact or forecast? Is this true of both Nvidia and ATI or (as I seem to remember) only Nvidia? If so, is it better for the long term to choose the cheaper standard Nvidia or the ATI, which seems better right now?
-Does any of these cards give an advantage over the other NOW in Photoshop, iMovie, Aperture (I have tried it on my G5, but scrolling a large collection of photos is a pain)? I do some video but no #D, nor do I think I will do in the future.
-Last quesstion for those who have a 2009 Pro in their hands, I have had always problems with USB peripherals on my G5. At some point the bus slows down to a crawl, with transfers of 1Mb/s. According to a local vendor the 2008 Pro was similar because he said it was a limitation of USB architecture, is this true? Has there been any improvement with thee better memory architecture of the 2009 Pros?

OS X :: Snow Leopard And 16gb USB Memory Sticks Not Working?
Sep 2, 2009I have three 16gb USB memory sticks that don't work correctly with Snow Leopard. Disk Utility is will only format them in FAT32 format and I'm unable to successfully copy files to and from the sticks.
They work perfectly fine under Windows in Boot Camp and also on my Windows based laptop. Sadly, I purchased them after I had installed Snow Leopard and I don't have access to another Mac with an earlier copy of Mac OS X to test them.
Is this most likely a Snow Leopard anomaly do you think or is it just that these sticks are not OS X compatible?

Feb 8, 2010I have a Sandisk Cruzer 16GB flash drive, which was working fine for months. It was formatted as FAT32 so I could move stuff back and forth between my tech school computer and my mac. I pulled the files off of it, and put an anti-malware program on it to troublshoot a netbook for class. The size of the drive is now shrinking, down currently to 43.5KB. I have no idea what may be causing it, or how to stop it.

Aug 12, 2009I have purchased two (from different places) 16Gb Flash drives. Ok they are "no name" but never had probs with the 4GB and 8Gb before like this. When I get to about 4GB of copied items they stop, saying I have "no user access priveledges. Then they won't empty.. or allow anything to trrash. The won't eject, I have to pull them out.. they then will empty. I can then start again.. same thing! I have tried Disk Utility, Formatting, Partitioning, Journaled and non Journald. Each time I get the same pattern. I have tried copying 4gb and more at one time and 1, 2, 3GB at a time. I have tried on two different iMacs 24in Intel and a 20in iMac G5 with the exact same results. Obviously it is the sticks but is there a way round it?

Nov 17, 2010Looking at getting a 13" MPB to replace my aging Macbook. I am aware of the imminent arrival of the next gen next year, but still seriously considering getting a current gen.
Anyway, I am debating between getting the 2.66GHz version with 4GB RAM and the 2.4GHz version with 8GB RAM. I already have a 500GB 7200rpm HDD which I will transplant into it. Some stage in the next year or so I will look into getting an SSD and optibay for it.
I know that if I get the faster processor I can upgrade the RAM at a later date, but is the faster processor worth the money, or would I be better spending on RAM?

I've found them online and wonder if I just should RAID three or four of them as opposed to one Seagate 500GBs or 750 with 32GB cache? These would all be a Raid run by Apple software not a RAID card.
