Mac Mini :: Upgrade Memoery To 16GB?

May 8, 2012

Would my 2GB Core i5 Mini benefit massively from a huge memory upgrade? i currently have it processing photos and videos and music while i'm away and remote into it. It very slow on remote but I don't know why that is. Slow as in almost unusable. Would the memory help it? speed it up? speed up my access to it?

MacBook Pro :: 16gb Memory Upgrade For 13" Early 2011?

Apr 28, 2012

I run parallels a fair bit for research and my MBP is pretty slow. Took it to genius and he said to get a memory upgrade to 8GB. However, I'm reading everywhere that it can handle 16GB and the Crucial says it is compatible (only £100 ish for this so seems a pretty good deal). All well and good- but will this invalidate Apple care as the max Apple state it can handle is 8GB? Or.....is 8GB going to be enough anyway?

Mac Mini :: Unable To Do Self Upgrade 09 Mini's Ram?

Mar 18, 2009

Okay I'm writing this for anyone who feels the same as I did about doing this and is unsure whether or not to do it. Maybe it can help someone

Last night I finally got round to upgrading my mac mini to 4GB of crucial memory using a 1.5" putty knife, mini screw driver set, pizza cutter, bright LED torch and towel. And boy was I pooooooping it during the whole process!

But don't let that put you off as if you do your research, take your time, double check everything you do, then double check again, have all the tools by your side and you are not a clumsy oath then you should complete it with out any problems.

My main concern is how much pressure you have to put on parts to remove them, compared to how easy they seem to come off on the vids I've watched. And how easy they seem to put the frame and memory in and out. As this is certainly not the case for a newbie!

The main outer casing for a start takes a lot of force and you are not quite sure how far down to put the putty knife. You think your going to damage the clips or case, but it seem really robust, you just have to trust it and do a little bit a a time working your way around the base.

The 2 small antennas seemed like they were going to snap on removal, really where attached well. One more than the other which caused me some stress

The bigger corner antenna, comes of okay, just don't squeeze the clips in to hard, as I did and managed to bend one in to much so when re-fiting I had to bend it out so it locked into place.

The next bit - the screws... make sure you have plenty of small screw drivers, all the ones I had were not small enough, so had to make a quick trip up to the DIY store half way through the job! The screws are impossible to get out unless you have a magnetic screwdriver, I could only get one out, left the other 3 un-done but still in the frame

The ribbon cable came of easy taking my time with a small screwdriver. After all this the whole frame came out giving me access to the ram - this took some jigging, be careful of the antenna wires and the ribbon.

Ram came out easy, but the 2 sticks I put in were not so easy. I could not see exactly where they had to go in, and took some force to get them in. Think it's all about getting the right angle though.

Everything went back pretty easy apart from the frame, this was a bit awkward getting it to fit exactly, but eventually it popped in to place.

I now have 4GB and intend to do the same process again when I can decide on what hard drive to buy to replace the 120GB internal + I am going to do my brothers.

Overall I am very happy I have saved my self money doing it myself, and learnt about the inside of a mac mini.

Mac Mini :: Hardrive Upgrade For Mac Mini

Feb 12, 2010

I have a 2009 Mac Mini 2.26 with the stock 160 Gb hardrive. I'm quickly running out of space and want to put in a bigger drive. I also like to have a faster drive, since I think it would make a difference in Photoshop and just make the mini feel a bit snappier.I originally was going to but in a 7200 drive such as the WD Scorpio black, but then I got concerned about the additional noise. I really like how quiet the Mini is. Therefore I started looking into 5400 drives. I even considered putting in a sdd plus an external am not sure it is worth the extra expense.

I have been looking though the forum but still can't figure out which option to go with.My specific questions are.

1. Would a 7200 drive be significantly faster than a 5400 drive?

2. Would a 7200 drive be noticeable nosier that a 5400 drive?

3. Which specific drives are recommended for speed and quietness.

Mac Mini :: MM (Mid-2010) Ram Upgrade?

Oct 1, 2010

I tried searching up this question but could not find any results.

I was watching the youtube video on the ram upgrading and I noticed that the person took out 2x 1GB ram pieces and put in 2x 2GB ram pieces.

The ram I purchased is 1x 4GB piece and I am just wondering if there would be any drawbacks for using 1x 1GB and 1x 4GB in my set-up. I remember that for PC, it's best if the RAM is the same size/speed/manufacturer. My newly purchased ram is from OWC.

Additionally, if I decide to only have 1x 4GB left in there, does it matter which slot I put it in? There are two slots that are empty and I'm not sure if there is a primary slot or secondary slot.

IMac :: RAM Upgrading To 16gb?

Dec 26, 2010

I recently got a new iMac (3.6 i5, 21.5") and want to upgrade the RAM myself.

I would like to get it up to 16 GB, but the cost of me getting that laa at once is a bit prohibitive. Is it possible for me to get an OWC 8 GB kit now and then add two more 4 GB sticks at a later time, or do they have to be matched or paired in some way?

Also, the iMac shipped with 4 GB of ram (on 2x2 GB sticks I am assuming). If I got an 8 GB kit, would it be possible for me to just add the 2x4 GB sticks and have 12 GB of RAM while I wait for more $ to get the rest of the 16 GB?

Mac Mini :: Apple Care And RAM Upgrade

May 26, 2009

I upgraded the RAM in my 2006 Mac Mini 1.83 a year or so ago. Thing worked fine until the other day. I purchased Applecare for this Mini in case anything went wrong. Something finally did-system will NOT boot, nor even power on, but the cooling fan runs at high speed continuously when the Mini is plugged in. Took it to a "genius" bar, and the guy was THE BIGGEST ASS ever. He FLIPPED THE HELL OUT when he found out I had opened the case. Took him 20 minutes to hunt it down, but he finally found some terms and conditions that state moding a Mini voids the warranty. I have had many people tell me, including Apple resellers, that adding RAM to a mini does NOT void the warranty. So anyway, I guess I am mostly pissed because the IDIOT DOLT at the "genius" bar knew less about computers than my 11 year old son and was determined to not give me the time of day because I had "sinned" and gone against Almighty Apple's wishes. The JERK had no interest in helping trouble shoot once he found out I opened the box. ALL HE DID was plug the stupind thing in, never even LOOKED inside it. Just put the top back on and plugged it in. I wish I could get the mini fixed, but they wanted nearly $400 for out of warranty service to which I politely declined. It had become a spare computer anyway. I own FIVE minis, TWO Macbooks, TWO iPhones, and at least FOUR iPods. I have spent in excess of $5,000 on Apple stuff in the last 18 months........

Mac Mini :: Doesn't Wake After Ram Upgrade

May 17, 2012

I recently upgraded my mac mini from 2gb ram to 8gb ram and noticed that when the mac goes to sleep and the tv ( through hdmi wire) goes into standby that the mac mini will not send a signal to the tv anymore to wake up the tv from standby when I need it too from tapping on keyboard or moving mouse. At first I thought it was because of a software upgrade on the mac mini but when I switched back the ram to 2gb the mac mini will send the signal to wake the tv. I hav already reset pram setting and the usual things that everyone has mentioned in other posts . This seems to be a major flaw in apple deisgn unless they have a fix . I am stuck with my 2gb ram now in the mac which doesnt even have any speed . the only way I can use the 8gb ram is if i turn the mac on and off everytime I want to use it , as this is the only way to wake the tv with the 8gb ram inside as it doesnt wake the tv from sleep. This totally contradicts what apple say in their manual aswell,  they say not to power down your mac if your using it everyday just put it to sleep which wont help me in my case . So at the end of this rant my only two options are to continue to use 8gb ram and have to power on and off mac everytime to wake the tv or use my 2gb ram which makes the mac run really slow as 2gb is not enough but hey aleast my tv will come back on from sleep mode .

OS X :: Booting Mac OS X From 16GB Flash Drive?

Aug 5, 2010

So I recently purchased a 16 GB iamakey from Lacie. I saw in an article in MacLife how to install a stripped down version of OS X on it to use as a rescue tool. I partitioned the drive into a 2gb and 14gb sections. The 2gb i want to use as just a flash drive for toting files. I installed OS X on the 14 GB section. The installation completes, but when I try to boot in, I just get a gray screen. The mouse can be seen. What went wrong? I have done this twice following the instructions.
