MacBook Pro :: 13" Processor Upgrade Vs RAM Upgrade?
Nov 17, 2010
Looking at getting a 13" MPB to replace my aging Macbook. I am aware of the imminent arrival of the next gen next year, but still seriously considering getting a current gen.
Anyway, I am debating between getting the 2.66GHz version with 4GB RAM and the 2.4GHz version with 8GB RAM. I already have a 500GB 7200rpm HDD which I will transplant into it. Some stage in the next year or so I will look into getting an SSD and optibay for it.
I know that if I get the faster processor I can upgrade the RAM at a later date, but is the faster processor worth the money, or would I be better spending on RAM?

I have a MacBook1,1 running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I would like to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. The Mac App Store says that a 64 bit processor is required. since my MacBook has a 32 bit Intel Core Duo, I would like to replace it with a 64 bit Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Is this possible, if so, what are the risks and should I bring it into an Apple store to get it fixed.

I am perfectly happy with my MBA, but I must admit that I like to always have the "latest and greatest". The new MacBooks look great, although I haven't seen one "live" or had the opportunity to get hands on with one yet. If I buy a new MacBook, I give up the form factor, but gain the processor power, features, etc. Also, it will really feel like a new computer because of the different appearance. Since I like the MBA form factor, I was thinking of just upgrading to that. The problem is that it won't even feel like I got a new laptop, because visually it would be identical to the one I have now. In fact, the reduced battery life may not offset the benefit of larger HD and improved graphics. Dying for a new laptop though... what are you other MBA owners thinking?

I have an early '08 Mac Pro that came with one E5462 2.8GHz Xeon processor. I would like to upgrade the processors as much as possible. As far as I can tell from my own research as well as the information on other threads in the forum, the best processors I can put in the machine are the Xeon X5482 3.2GHz chips. I found a pair of them on eBay, but the seller says the steppings are "E 0 steppings". The seller describes the chips as "Intel Xeon Quad Core X5482 E S"... which sounds like they were Engineering Samples... I'm okay with that, but what about the "E 0" steppings? Will they work in the Mac Pro?

I am thinking of buying a mac mini with these specs
1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo Processor
2GB 667 MHz DDR2 RAM
Intel GMA 950 Graphics
250GB Hard Disk Drive
4 USB Ports
DVI Connector
I am wondering if I could upgrade the processor to i5 and the HD to a 1TB because I plan to use it for basic movie editing and I am on a $600-$800 budget (the computer cost $250)

Not planning on it right now coz it's pretty fast after I upgraded it's ram to 4gb just thinking for the future, if not what's the best upgrade I could give it?

I was just wondering if i bought the imac with a 2.5ghz quad core processor if apple could switch out that processor with a 3.4 ghz quad core processor. I understand apple makes it easy for the user to add extra ram and i will be doing that within the first week but id like to have a more powerful processor without paying 1,999 for the 27in 3.1ghz

I am kicking around between upgrading video card in my 1st gen Mac Pro (2 x 2.66 dual core, 8gb ram) from 7300 Gt to ati 4870 vs. upgrading to a newer system altogether...
Newer MP has 2 x 2.66 quad cores, 12 gb ram with the 4870 card.) What kind of improved performance might I really expect or even notice when using photoshop, light video editing, 3d graphics.
I have not included costs because I want to focus on the performance boosts sans cost for the purpose of this discussion.

Maybe this isn't the correct forum...I'm a newbie. Today, after checking and installing upgrades to my iMac OS X, I'm seeing a pop-up saying 'my existing messages need to be upgraded the first time I use Mail again." I'm not sure what it intends to do to my Mail messages and I'm slightly fearful because many of them are Outlook Express messages that were transferred from my old PC. Anyone gone ahead and done this 'mail upgrade' yet? and did you have any issues?

I went to BB and bought the upgrade for my MBP running Leopard but I decided I would try to install it on my Tiger running iMac almost possitive it would not work. It however worked and even installed faster (1/3 the time) of my MBP with more Ram and better processor. So it is definitely done

I am curious about the system requirement of Snow Leopard. Since the performance and speed are better on SL, I think Snow Leopard will consume a little bit more resource of our macs., although I know Snow Leopard is just only the refinement of the software.
So, my question is that WILL YOU UPGRADE YOUR RAM OF YOUR MAC?

I have a 2.66GHz Mac Pro (4-core) with 8GB RAM.
I also have a 2.80GHz MacBook Pro (mid-2009) with 4GB RAM.
My main programs are Flash, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop. I use these on both Macs.
I do a small amount of AfterEffects, UltraFractal, Bryce 6, and Cinema4D, but nothing *big*. I typically use these on the Mac Pro only.
I spend most of my time on the Mac Pro.

I have a Mid 2009 Model Macbook Pro 17" with currently 4 Gigs of ram. I contacted Apple and to upgrade to 8 Gigs of ram from them would cost me $600.
( Type of Ram is Apple Memory Module 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 (PC3-8500) - 2x4GB SO-DIMMs )
That is a ton! I was shocked.
I looked at newegg.com and it looks to be around 250 bucks to upgrade and buy ram from there.
So I have a quick couple of questions.
1. What brand of Ram do you think is the best?
2. Do you guys know of any other places to buy it from for less?
3. Will this void my Applecare warranty?
I looked up how to switch it and that seems quite simple so no help needed there.
