Hardware :: Recovering / 16GB Flash Drive Has Lost Most Of It's Storage Space
Feb 8, 2010
I have a Sandisk Cruzer 16GB flash drive, which was working fine for months. It was formatted as FAT32 so I could move stuff back and forth between my tech school computer and my mac. I pulled the files off of it, and put an anti-malware program on it to troublshoot a netbook for class. The size of the drive is now shrinking, down currently to 43.5KB. I have no idea what may be causing it, or how to stop it.

Ok it's like this, i recently bought my Mac and in preparation before i got it i stocked up certain apps i wanted on my Windows desktop, now I have a 7 GB dmg file that won't go on a 16GB flash drive and it's driving me crazy. I just don't know why it can't go, i re-formatted it and it still won't go.
Is there something I don't know about dmg files? are they actually larger than they appear, if not I need to find another means of transfering this file and all I have is this flash drive, no connector cables or anything like that.

So I recently purchased a 16 GB iamakey from Lacie. I saw in an article in MacLife how to install a stripped down version of OS X on it to use as a rescue tool. I partitioned the drive into a 2gb and 14gb sections. The 2gb i want to use as just a flash drive for toting files. I installed OS X on the 14 GB section. The installation completes, but when I try to boot in, I just get a gray screen. The mouse can be seen. What went wrong? I have done this twice following the instructions.

I just wonder - you get a lot less space for the money. Is Flash storage that much better?

If my hard drive was "scrubbed" by techs at the genius bar who thought that my computer had a software issue (it didn't) does that mean that a data recovery tool wouldn't be able to find the deleted files?

I am embarrassed to say that last night, after taking care of my grandbaby for several hours and half-asleep myself, I intended to pull out my power cord to move my MacBook, but by accident pulled out the storage drive firewire. Of course, the drive appears to have been erased. It won't even show up on my desktop anymore.

I backed up my hard drive to an external drive. I now want to free up my hard drive storage space. How do I do that. I deleted several GB of iTunes but the free file space did not increase. How can I free up disk space?

Can I use my flash drive as a storage for music and use it in iTunes. Like how on a CD it shows it as a CD and lists the songs on it. I would like to do this on a flash drive as well.

I previously had a Windows 7 Boot Camp partition of roughly 50GB on my 256GB MacBook Air. I removed this partition after Wind'ohs driving me crazy after a while. However, now my Mac partition is only 200GB, and I'm not able to increase its size. Also, my Recovery HD shows up in permanently in Finder and Disk Utility.I now need to (sadly...) reinstall Windows, but Boot Camp won't partition my drive, giving me the error: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition". What's going on with my partitions? The Recovery HD seems to be causing the problem, but I don't understand why I can't use the 50GB of space that is empty.

I have a 17 inch MBP running Lion and Windows 7 with a boot camp partition. My mac side has 500GB of space, and my windows 7 partition has 250GB. Recently I shrunk my disk space on the windows 7 partition by going to Control Panel->searching "partition" and shrinking it, so now my boot camp partition has 132GB. However, I thought that space was going to be moved to my Mac OS X partition, but it didn't. Where is that memory space? It can't be flat out lost, can it? I also tried expanding it back but I can't click that option. I really do not want to lose those 118gigs. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but I really need it.

I shut down the computer, and opened up screenflow and exited it. However the 30 gigs is still missing. I got an error saying out of space while I was recording a webcam and now the 30 gigs is gone. I only have 5 gigs of hd space left on my computer when it should be closer to 35 gigs left. I ran cleanmymac but that didn't find the missing hard-drive space.

I spent quite some time preparing an email.
Then I had to restart Firefox to install an update.
I forgot about the email, probably thinking it would ask me if I wanted it saved.
It's gone.
Is there any way I can recover it?

My laptop recently contracted 4 Trojan horses - yes, it was nasty. I had to have the entire thing restored, but luckily all my data was backed up before this.
Once my laptop was back to normal, I downloaded itunes and plugged in my ipod. Itunes then began automatically synching the empty itunes with my ipod - I tried to cancel it but it was too late, and the new itunes had effectively wiped my ipod of all it's content.
All my music was backed up on to data discs, so it could have been worse - however the songs which I cannot get back, are the ones I purchased off itunes, and that's quite alot.

As I'm sure many of you know, MS Word 2008 has a WONDERFUL little option on the mac version, called NOTEBOOK view. You can access this by clicking view and switching to the NOTEBOOK option. This feature is an absolute GOD-SEND for people like me who like to take notes while recording looong and boring lectures which cause rapid flare-ups of my ADHD.
Now, unfortunately, if youre already familiar with this feature, you're also familiar with how often this stupid piece of ***** program likes to freeze and crash at the end of your lecture, basically ruining your chances at the fabled A+. If you're lucky, you saved your document in the beggining so that the auto-recover feature could kick in and recover maybe 80% of your audio/notes IF YOURE LUCKY, but most of the time, YOU'RE SCREWED.
I researched heavily and found no answer other than an apology from microsoft accompanied by "the finger" basically restating their knowledge of the problem. Lucky for me, I stumbled onto a little hint, that had little to do with my specific problem.

My boss accidentally deleted all the messages in his inbox in Apple Mail and since it syncs with the server (mediatemple), they're all gone from the webmail too. Is there anyway to recover these files? I sent a support request to mediatemple to see if they have backups that they can recover too.
We have a tape backup system here at work that backs up his user account. Would there be a specific file to look for that might contain the old messages?

I have purchased two (from different places) 16Gb Flash drives. Ok they are "no name" but never had probs with the 4GB and 8Gb before like this. When I get to about 4GB of copied items they stop, saying I have "no user access priveledges. Then they won't empty.. or allow anything to trrash. The won't eject, I have to pull them out.. they then will empty. I can then start again.. same thing! I have tried Disk Utility, Formatting, Partitioning, Journaled and non Journald. Each time I get the same pattern. I have tried copying 4gb and more at one time and 1, 2, 3GB at a time. I have tried on two different iMacs 24in Intel and a 20in iMac G5 with the exact same results. Obviously it is the sticks but is there a way round it?

I take tons of pictures and that is what's sucking up all of my memory. I currently have a 2011 Macbook Pro OS X Lion Version 10.7.4. 4 GB memory 2 GHz processor. Now that I look at the "About This Mac" it says all of my storage is "Other" with 0 KB in everything else like photos and apps which I know is false. Anyway, what should I do? Should I go to best buy and get a bigger memory? its currently 500 GB & 499.25 of that is filled up... What could I delete to free up space? Should I partition my photos onto an external hard drive?

It came the time i knew it was going to come when i bought by MAB rev.1: I need more storage space. So far, I have been burning all movies on DVDs, but now i need space for music and pics. What is your advice? I do not want to buy a wired device, because MAB has only one USB port. At the same time they told me that the Time Capsule does not really work very well, and i do not really need another wireless router anyways. Would you guys reccomend another wireless HD? Which one? Or, put differently, what solution did you go for?

My server that i currently have is seems to be on its last leg (4 years old with old slow hdd). Anyway, I'd like to replace it but would rather just use my mac pro. I need about 4TB of storage space. Ideally I'd have one hdd to kick in if another began to fail. From my readings it sounds like I need Raid5 (correct me if I'm wrong). I know this can be done but I've already used 3 drive bays that came with my mac pro, anyway I can setup a raid 5 and have the storage space? I guess what I'm looking for here is some type of RAID card (Arcea 1210?) and then a storage solution. Once thats figured out, I'll need to know how to power the hdds.

I have already produced one thread on how to install an SSD into a 2008 mac pro found here - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=962856I have a 2008 mac pro 2.8 octo and feeling my drives bottleneck the system i want a new solution to give it a new lease of life.Being ready to bite the bullet and buy myself an Intel M 160gb, I started reading about the Seagate Momentus XT. A hybrid drive which contains a 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" drive coupled with 4gbs NAND solid state memory (ssd) so launches all your programs OS etc lightening fast, comparable to an SSD, but provides the storage space of a HDD. So is a good compromise between the two. It also provides an Adaptive Memory Technology which intelligently monitors frequently used applications and places them into the solid state portion of the drive so they can be quickly recalled.
