I recently got a new iMac (3.6 i5, 21.5") and want to upgrade the RAM myself.
I would like to get it up to 16 GB, but the cost of me getting that laa at once is a bit prohibitive. Is it possible for me to get an OWC 8 GB kit now and then add two more 4 GB sticks at a later time, or do they have to be matched or paired in some way?
Also, the iMac shipped with 4 GB of ram (on 2x2 GB sticks I am assuming). If I got an 8 GB kit, would it be possible for me to just add the 2x4 GB sticks and have 12 GB of RAM while I wait for more $ to get the rest of the 16 GB?
I ordered a retina MacBook Pro base model. I figured I'd only need 8GB but then after I cast my order into the depths of Apple, I was thinking I should have got the 16GB upgrade. But on one hand, I was wondering if the RAM is user-replaceable or do they solder it on the boards now? I can buy another 8GB stick from a 3rd party.
I just got a new iMac, and I can't figure out how to get the stock RAM out! its 2 sticks of 2G and I want to replace them with 4 x 4G. I have pulled on the black tabs but nothing happens!
can I install two 8GB RAM (total 16GB) in my iMac? I have the early 2009 version of the iMac 24" 2.93 GHz intel core 2 duo. I already have 8GB (2x 4GB) 1066MHz RAM installed.I do very intensive photoshop art (the saved PSD files usually exceed 1GB, and while the document is open in Photoshop, it can exceed 5GB -- but of course PSD files cannot be saved over 2GB so I usually have to delete unused layers to reduce its size). I usually end up using more than 8GB of RAM for this (image files, with multiple layers, layer styles, etc, at 24,000 x 12,000 pixels of resolution, even in 8-bit 8GB of RAM is not enough).I need more RAM, but I do not want to buy a new iMac just for this.
I know the official maximum is 8GB (4GBx2) which is what I have, but I know that when this model was released, there were no 8GB RAM easily accessible. Now there is, for under $200.I want to upgrade to two 8GB sticks, to instease the RAM to 16GB, which would be exactly what I need.

I've been researching for a while on upgrading my white intel iMac from a "Core Duo" processor to a "Core 2 Duo" processor. The processor I would like to use is a Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T5750 processor, which would give me 2 additional cores as well as a small speed bump from 1.83 ghz to 2.0 ghz. I figured compatibility should be fine considering the FSB speed (667 Mhz) is the same. Has anyone tried this? Can anyone tell me if this will work for sure?
Have a quick question. I'm considering buying an Imac from a reputable Apple imac reseller on Ebay that manually upgrade the hd's to either 2tb or an ssd drive on the imac 27. Will apple not honor the warranty and void it if they see the hd were not upgraded by them should the warranty ever have to be used?
Also, if the imac ever needs to be replaced by apple, do I .lose the hd for a stock imac model with only ,1tb hd? Hope that makes sense.
I have the IMac with 4gb of ram. I want to upgrade to 8gb. I know that the imac use ddr3 but that's not enough. I need more info to be able to buy the same memory. It would be better if I know which brand and model. I want to buy the same memory to upgrade
I've scoured the internet and haven't come across a definite answer yet for why I would not be able to put 2x2GB ram modules into my Rev A G5 iMac. I've looked at the developer architecture guide from apple and it says nothing as to why a larger module won't work. [URL]. I guess I am just looking to understand where the limitation exists, is it hardware not being able to address the extra RAM or something else. I've also been unable to dig up much more info on the U3L memory bus to see if thats where the problem might be. I'm thinking that at the time 2gb modules were uncommon or not made so there was no reason to include them, but now its only a little more than the 1gb ones.
I am looking to upgrade to a new mac and have been set on getting the new 8 Core tower. A few people have told me I would be better off getting the new imac i7 instead. I am only going to be running logic 9, ableton 8, and protools le 8.. My sound card is a digi002 rack. I will only be using this machine for these purposes and no other. Would it be better to just go ahead and get an 8 core tower or would the imac i7 be just as good if not better? And, would the imac i7 be as durable with a full time work load?
I have an iMac 27" w/ 4GB. I was looking to upgrade to 8GB. When adding more GB, do they have to be the same MHz? For example, my iMac has 1067 MHZ in it. If i get one that is 1333 MHz, will that still work with the 1067 MHz?
In doing a fresh install of OS X Tiger on my emac, can it be done by a disk image of Tiger or do I have to use the CDs? Reason being the CD thingy is not working.
Or, do I have to sacrifice the fresh install and use a USB Drive to upgrade it?
I was wondering if anyone could tell me how/if it is possible to upgrade my iMac 24" with an integrated nVidia Geforce 9400 to the dedicated GT 130 with 512megs. The nVidia website ([URL]) claims that the 24" model offers two potential upgrades (with one being the 120 and the other the 130), but doesn't specify exactly how this works. Does anyone know how to install this card? and what it would involve? I've heard the iMac is all but unupgradeable, but then I saw that claim on the nVidia website.
I just upgraded my imac G5 to OS 10.5.8 and as a result can no longer use my adobe photoshop elements software. I was thinking of downloading a simple free program like Image Tricks but was wondering if this would do any damage. I am not very familiar with issues regarding free software. s
optimising my iMac? I've upgraded to Yosemite (what a mistake!) and now the videos on the net are endlessly charging, my track pad is not that responsive and my iMac is soo slow!
I've just installed an SSD in my new iMac 27", see here. I'm fast learning though (diglloydTools and other commentators) that once the application has loaded the SSD isn't involved very much from there on, so there are the same old performance problems. I'm finding in Firefox/Firebug where there is a large DOM (nothing exceptional) performance is still woeful.
So, baring in mind the Core i7 processor is under $200 and it would appear to have been possible to upgrade the iMac's processors in the past, does anybody have any advice for me? What parts will I need, have you done it and what was your experience, any common problems with doing this, are the parts themselves upgradeable (the quoted link only suggests they are) etc.
I'd like to start by saying excuse the stupid questions, I'm still very new with using macs. I'm a long time PC user, but I've recently made plans to replace my PC with an iMac. Specifically a 21.5" with an Intel i3 processor. This mac comes with 4gb ram, and a Radeon 5650 HD graphics card.
Now I'm a fairly big gamer, and I like my hardware to be as high-end and up-to-date as possible. If I were to plan on upgrading the graphics card, ram, and processor, could this be easily done at home?
I'm asking because of the unusual structure of the iMac. i.e. the lack of tower, and all the hardware being merged with the screen. I'm assuming it would be a lot easier on a mac pro because it actually has a tower that I can easily open/customize.
Lastly, granted that the above is possible, are the generic graphics cards, processor, and ram chips compatible with iMacs? Or would I need to buy a special iMac compatible version from an Apple specialist shop?
I did some searching on this topic but couldn't really find any info. I have a 2006 24" iMac with a 250gb HD. I just upgraded the ram to 3gb and have done a fresh install of snow leopard but my machine still seems to struggle with applications and accessing files. I was looking at replacing it with either a WD Caviar Black or a Samsung Spinpoint 1tb. the extra space is not my biggest concern, just wondering about performance increases?
I have an old imac G3 /500 mhz graphite from my old work sitting around just for my little one to play cd games. I use PC now to do my emailing and net-surfing, but gotta admit I used to love this machine, and though it's old it still looks cool. I didn't get around to connet it to go on-line, because of compatibility problem with PC(main cable modem is connected to a PC) but now thinking about upgrading it to go on-line for my kids to use. It has OS 9.0.4, 128MB of RAM with speed of 500 mhz w/front slot loading. I'm not computer savvy and don't know much about it, but was told before that system has to be upgraded to OS 9.1 or later first, in order for wireless card to be installed. Can anyone help me with exactly what I need to go on-line with this imac? since it's going to be mainly for my kids, I do not plan to purchase any additional application software, but willing to spend some to upgrade system, memory, and on wireless card. I'm thinking I might not even need newest system as long as it can go on-line, but which OS system(or should go higher?) would make more sense? How much more memory?Is it really possible to install a wireless card on this machine? Would there be a problem because main cable is connected to a PC in which wireless router is installed(for another window laptop)? Or is it even worth trying? Appreciate any advice you computer genius out there could give me.
if it was possible to swap out the first intel processors with the newer ones the imacs are coming with. i found this info and mainly looks just as tricky as open heart surgery to risk my imac doing, and thats just replacing the processor itself.
I have an iMac G5 17" with 2GHz PowerPC G5 processor , originally had 512 MB RAM and has been upgraded to 2Gb RAM. The HD has been erased apart from the Tiger OS. I assume there is now 1Gb RAM in each slot ... not sure if the original 512 MB was split between two slots or if it was all in one slot. Have been using OS Tiger 10.4 up until now.
Recently I bought a RETAIL edition of Leopard 10.5.1 to install ( the one with the big X on the front) but after 10 minutes of the installation got the message "Install Failed ... Source Media Disc damaged" . I previously tried another Leopard installation disc and got the same message. I think it's unlikely that both installation discs are damaged; they are both new and came from reputable sources. I can reinstall Tiger without any problems. I have tried erasing the HD volume using Disc Utilities at the initial install stage but still get the same message .
A colleague has now advised me there have been problems with some iMac G5 machines with upgraded RAM when trying to install Leopard ... the Leopard installation disc does not like upgraded RAM.
Before I try and source some RAM to the original spec. ie 512MB, and then try again with Leopard, can anyone advise me if it might be worth taking out just one of the existing 1 Gb RAM modules ( I assume there are two there, I dont know for sure because the upgrade was done by a Mac Repair Shop ) and then trying the Leopard Install with just 1Gb RAM ? Or do I need to go back to the original 512Mb module(s) ?
I get kernel panics after a few min's of running the Mac pro. The ram are perfectly paired (2x 4gb in both slots, both in the first 2) and I get issues with it it seems. It started to happen as of today but didn't happen the days before. Nothing was changed in the configs or software.
I'm looking to get the a new iMac and will be using it for iTunes , photo's and hopefully will get into the iMovie for editing family movies etc.
Is it worth me upgrading to 4 gigs ram and 3.06 processor and Geforce graphics card? or will i not really notice a difference from the model below with 2 gigs ram and 2.86 processor?
Also in terms of ripping my family dvd's onto the imac can this be done?
