MacBook Pro :: Using Intel SSD - Finding Advice On Snow Leopard Installation From UTD Disk?

Jan 22, 2010

Here's the deal: I have the most recent 17" UMBP, purchased last August, 2009 and got the Snow Leopard Up To Date Disk, did an install on my stock Hard Drive and have been VERY happy with everything for the past few months.

But... All these threads championing the latest Intel SSD G2 have finally gotten to me and, I just purchased the 80GB model from Newegg. It should be here tomorrow.

Now, I ask that you confirm, a specific question about installation from my UTD disk and then advise.

note that I've searched a ton about this subject. It's been answered in so many conflicting ways, I'm running it by you guys once again.

So then, it seems that I can NOT install Snow Leopard from my UTD disk onto the new, fresh Intel SSD installed into my 17" UMBP. This is the case, yes?

A workaround, I figure, would be to install Leopard 10.5 onto the new SSD and then to a clean and erase and then instal of 10.6 on top. I assume the UTD will read 10.5 and let the upgrade proceed.

So, finally, a question: Should I be worried about installing a total of two OSs given that I (cheaply!) opted for the smaller 80GB SSD and that 10.6 doesn't support TRIM?

OS X :: Finding Snow Leopard Bare Drive Installation Guide?

Aug 29, 2009

Just wanted to let everyone know this morning I installed a brand new drive in my mac mini (320GB 7200RPM for the record)

Then booted off the snow leopard disk and did a fresh install.

The key is to go into the disk utility menu when the first snow leopard screen is displayed (I think the button is "continue" on the first screen). Once in disk utility you can format your bare drive and then upon closing disk utility the SL installer will come back and prompt you to install on the drive you just formatted.

This was using the $29 snow leopard upgrade disk for the record (and yes I already owned leopard for this machine).

SL is so far working sweet except for the lack of istat menus! They really need to get a move on and get that SL compatible version released.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Installation On MBA / Installing Using The Remote Disk Feature?

Aug 25, 2009

I purchased a copy of SL that I want to install on my MBA. I know that Leopard can be installed using the remote disk feature since my MBA doesn't have a DVD drive. problem is that I can't find anywhere saying that SL will support that function. Although I did see that the minimum system requirements require a DVD drive, but it doesn't say anything about a remote drive.

I'm sure it would be stupid if it wasn't supported, but then again you can't installed XP without the SuperDrive.

Intel Mac :: Unable To Complete Snow Leopard Installation After Performing HDD Erase

Mar 29, 2012

I experienced what I believe was a crash so after various attempts at doing a time machine restore, I performed an erase of the HDD and have been trying to install snow leopard from a disk I bought from the Apple store. I am not sure if the disk is the whole OS X or not as it was purchased to upgrade from the OS X that was on the machine. I am hoping to do a time machine backup to get my old programmes/software back afterwards but in the meantime just cannot seem to get snow leopard on my iMac.

MacBook Pro :finding Expert Advice For Diagnosing With 13"

Feb 10, 2010

I'm fairly new to Mac's and have had this 13" MBP since July of 2009. I've noticed that my laptop will display a black screen and will not respond until I hold the power button and then restart it. Last week I sent it to Apple repair which they had it for a week and could not duplicate the problem. So it was sent back to me un-repaired. I honestly feel as though there is something wrong because at first I thought it wasn't waking up from sleep mode. However since getting the laptop back on Friday I have be paying attention to what's going on.

Since I thought it was a sleep issue, I thought if I went into the System Preferences, Energy Saver and from there I changed both the Battery & Power Adapter settings to NEVER, to keep it from going into Sleep Mode. Well after a little while the laptop will go to the black screen like I've been experiencing but why is the screen going black if I don't have it set to ever going to sleep?

MacBook :: Cannot Boot After Snow Leopard Installation

Nov 27, 2009

My leopard installation was giving me a lot of headache so I thought of doing a clean install. Now that Snow Leopard had been out for quite sometime and many issues solved; I thought of installing it instead of Leopard. All I did was follow the instructions to install Snow Leopard [the only option with Snow Leopard was that it did an "Archive and Install" kind of thing by default]. It did take a lot of time [1 hour?] and I was finally taken to my desktop. I looked to check if everything was okay. Though there was nothing spectacular about Snow Leopard. I shut the computer down. Today morning I get this and I can't boot.

MacBook Pro :: Format Snow Leopard And New Installation?

May 22, 2012

I want to format my Macbook Pro (Intel i7 2.7 GHz) and give it a fresh installation of Snow Leopard. I currently have two partitions on my 500 GB hard drive: the first one with the operative system, and the second one with all the backup data I want to save. Anyone can assure me that, if I install Snow Leopard again through the installation DVD, the second partition will NOT be erased? I have partial backup of the data, but not enough space for everything on my external drives. I just want to make sure that the second partition remains untouched during the installation.

OS X :: Snow Leopard On MacBook - Installation Doesn't Finish

Jan 17, 2010

I just bought Snow Leopard today and I am trying to install it on my MacBook (with intel processor). I have inserted the dvd and tried to install it but there seems to be a problem as it is written: "Time remaining about 45 minutes" and this doesn't change. The dvd has been running for over 2 hours now and I don't know what to do nor what is going on? I understood installation with Snow Leopard should be faster. Is it normal that it takes so long to install the operating system (more than 2 hours)? It should just be an upgrade as I have Leopard already installed. I also have Windows Vista installed on a disk partition. Does that make any problem? It shouldn't as at the beginning of the installation I chose Macintosh HD.

Intel Mac :: Damaged Install Disk For Snow Leopard, Restore From Time-machine?

Jun 19, 2012

I got SMART warning about my hard disk, I got it replaced by a shop, but said I would do OS restore myself. (cant afford cost )Thought it would be simple - but it is anything but.  It appears my install DVD is damaged, so was not able to boot with Grey OS install disk - holding the C key.I managed to get iMac to boot up using the old disk  - using firewire dock. However I was not able to restore old disk and OS to new disk, Due to IO read error.(this is why I had the SMART warning). So I am unable to get the OS on the new HD using the old disk or the DVD as these are both damaged.  The computer is running, so I thought I would try buying and downloading LION - then using the migration tool .  The download is still running after 2 days.I went to apple store, and was told that they cannot replace DVD , so I should bring in the iMac = and pay for the restore.  Dont wish to do this. As I have the computer and OS running, is there anything I can do to get a time machine restore from another backup disk (USB).

Windows On Mac :: Finding Expert Advice - Using 7 (Bootcamp And Parallels)

Dec 26, 2009

I have a new 27" iMac with the i5 processor, Snow Leopard, and 8GB of Ram. Using the secondary display trick, I was able to successfully install Windows 7 (64 bit) with Bootcamp and it is working great. But I also have Parallels Desktop 5 (latest version) and am having troubles with it running Windows 7 from my Bootcamp partition.

I was able to get the virtual machine installed and Windows 7 will boot. However, it takes a LONG time to start the virtual machine and hard drive access is VERY sluggish. To be clear, Parallels itself loads fast but once I start the Windows 7 virtual machine, it takes 5-10 minutes to loads. But even after it loads, any time I do something to access the HD, it is very slow. For example, if I try to play a game, it'll take a long time to load the game but once it gets loaded, it runs great. So I know it's not a memory, CPU, or GPU issue. I have 4 GB or Ram dedicated to the virtual machine.

Now I thought I read something about Parallels having trouble with Windows 7 when using the Bootcamp partition - something about a HFS reading problem from a Bootcamp driving or something?

My Mac is booting into the 32bit kernel of Snow Leopard and the Windows 7 installation is 64 bit? Would that be causing a problem?

I also have Macfuse and Paragon NTFS installed on the Mac. Would those be causing a problem?

Specifically, what do you think could be causing the very slow hard drive access in my virtual machine? I wasn't able to find a solution at the Parallels website.

Software :: Finding Expert Advice-- Want To Make Documents EXPIRE...

Jun 6, 2008

I am doing a project in which I'm circulating some sensitive material via PDF files. Ideally, I'd love it if the PDF file could expire so that the sensitive material wasn't hanging out on people's computers forever. (the material isn't life or death sensitive-- but it would be great if we could limit the time that it existed "out there")..

I looked into solutions that create PDF files that expire-- but the functionality is expensive ($3000) and requires users download an Acrobat plugin-- which is too cumbersome for the scientists that need to see these PDFs--- any sort of expiration/security/DRM we impose on the files needs to be 100% transparent.

Does anyone know of an inexpensive way to do this with PDF files? (I have a feeling it might not be possible)--or not easily possible for someone without programming expertise like me--- BUT-- on the other hand....

Can anyone suggest another way to distribute documents that would expire?-- someone suggested using Flash or web delivery of some sort? Anyone have ideas on that front? The situation is that we're creating documents that are 40 to 150 pages in length, and have bookmarks for sections in the document-- so if we went to a Flash or Web delivery type of method.. it would have to be quite simple to go from PDF to this format--- and the medium would have to be printable and viewable when not connected to the internet.

IMac :: Finding Expert Advice On Migration Of Time Machine Backup To New 27

Oct 29, 2009

I still have my serious video ram problem set my other post. The apple store wanted $650 to replace my motherboard and the cheapest i found one online was $950, all for a machine that SL will not even support. I am limping along waiting for my i7 iMac to show (Whenever that is)

Here is my question. I am not sure if my data on tis machine is corrupted by my video ram problem so not sure I want to do the firewire transfer, that is if my machine will even last till my new one shows.

I have 2 back-ups a time machine and a super duper backup of 99% of my stuff. If I use my time machine back-up wont it wipe SL OS 10.6 off the new machine? When you do a TM back-up from disk utility from the OS10.5 leopard start-up disc, it says that it will completely wipe your HD clean.

BTW do any of you experts know if my video artifact problem is corrupting my files or just my video, while I am typing this everything looks good unless I look at my menu-bar or dock which is pretty distorted....

OS X :: Snow Leopard Installation Keeps Failing

Dec 23, 2009

So I've only had my macbook pro aluminum body for about 4 months and after downloading the new system update, my laptopl just started acting weird and then it would just keep freezing with the pinwheel for extended periods of time. I've decided to verify and repair the disc, but to no avail, it didn't help. So, I backed up files in an external hard drive and erased my disc. However, after repeating to reinstall Snow Leopard at least 10 times, it keeps on telling me that it has failed to copy supported files. If I eject my installation DVD, it will just show up with a gray screen that has a folder and a question mark on it. I'm not sure what to do. I feel like I should take it over to an Apple store to consult with a Genius...but it is far from where I live. Any easy step to step advice on what I should do?
