MacBook Pro :: Resizing My Screen After Every Thing Goes Huge?
Jun 22, 2009
I have had my Powerbook G4 for a few years now and everything has been working well. When I turned it off yesterday everything looked normal. But when I turned it on this morning, everything was huge. All the tool bars, the screen,, everything is blown up. This is really inconvenient and hard to read... how can I return my Mac to normal and make everything small again?

I have an 17" MacBook Pro which works fine apart from the screen going blank. It seems to happen mostly when running videos which also causes the fan to run faster.Â
An SMC reset seems to be the only way to get it working again.Â

I got my unibody MacBook right after they came out, probably Oct (?) 2008. I was gonna buy the AppleCare but didn't and now, there are huge chunks of dust smack in the middle of my screen. Any tips on what to do? I went to the Apple Store at the Mall of America and the Genius was a total dick, saying since it was past warranty, even though it's a manufacturing defect I have to pay to get it fixed. I live in Chicago so I didn't want it fixed there anyway, I wanted to see what they'd do.
I remember my gf has the white plastic one and when the plastic at the bottom was cracking they replaced it way after warranty since it was a known defect. Won't they do that for me too? I'm fully prepared to go in and raise total hell if necessary.

I just installed an update on my macbook, but once it completed, it got stuck at the blue loading screen with the swirling thing for more than 10 minutes (I started to pay attention when I noticed it hadn't booted up faster, so I'm not exactly sure how long it took). It eventually restarted itself though. It's happened once before, but I did what I use to do on my old windows laptop and just held down the power button until it powered off, let it sit for a little bit, and then booted it back up. It worked just fine.
My question is, is anyone else having this problem and is there a fix? Is this something I need to be worried about? Did I somehow mess something up by powering it down and back up before? Forgot to mention what macbook pro it is (if it matters). 15in MBP, OS X 10.6.4, 2.4GHz Intel core i5, 4G RAM...

I am using a wireless mouse on my intel iMac, and when I am using Safari, and no other program, when I am navigating, the screen will suddenly zoom in and get huge. I don't think I am doing anything repeatable when this happens. I cannot do anything to zoom back out. So, I need to go back a page and start over at the normal screen size. This is annoying, especially when I have just reached a page I need to see.

Is there a shortcut in Mac OS X that resizes two or more open windows automatically so that each window is shown on the screen simultaneously? For example, I want to have a safari window open and a word document open so that one half of the screen is showing safari and the other half is word. I know I can resize them manually but I was wondering if there is a shortcut or a third party utility that resizes any open windows to fit the entire screen? This would be useful, for example, with the new 27 inch iMacs where the wide screen can easily display three (or more) windows side by side utilizing the entire screen area; having them resized automatically would be more productive than having to resize them manually.

First of all, is the interface for the MBA HDD PATA or ZIF or is it the same thing? I'm looking to get rid of my 80GB HDD and would love to get a 160GB but I'm willing to settle for 120GB.

I am just looking for a little help with my Early 08 white Macbook. It is running 10.6 just in case you were wondering. But the problem I am having is that I can not get a microphone to work on the damn thing. I have tried 2 different microphones on it, both in through the line in and I have tried line out too and neither of them worked. When I go into system preferences and hit sounds and go to line-in it says it dosn't pick anything up.

I was wondering if anyone had this problem before and what you did to fix this? Or if anyone knew how to fix this problem.

I have been reading that several people are seeing much cooler temperatures on their Mac notebooks and they think it's due to better graphics drivers with the update to 10.6.3. I however thought about the huge performance hit in OpenGL going from Leopard to Snow Leopard (probably same thing). So I decided to check my OpenGL results after installing 10.6.3. However, I didn't check my xBench results before upgrading to 10.6.3. I went and found an old result which shows 67 points for "OpenGL Graphics Test." My new result for "OpenGL Graphics Test" is 111 points. When I check the xBench archives, people with rev "C" MBA's with 10.6.2 all show OpenGL Graphics Test scores in the 60s.
If this is correct, we could all have some big improvements that really show huge effects on the MBA. It should help everyone running Snow Leopard. It should lead to graphics performance gains and lower heat due to graphics demands. Could someone else running 10.6.2 on a 2.13 GHz CPU MBA run an xBench test before the 10.6.3 upgrade? Then upgrade to 10.6.3 and run another xBench test. Then please report back here with your results for OpenGL Graphics Test and hope this result is great for all of us. I believe this would be a big improvement for the original MBA too?

I just replaced a 5400 rpm 320 Gb Western Digital (not the stock drive) with a Momentus XT in my late 2007 MBP, and I couldn't be more impressed. The eternal beach balls are gone. Granted, I've never had an SSD, but the speed boost from this thing is unbelievable. I didn't even do a clean install, just a restore from Time Machine. I didn't do formal benchmarks, but I did time my boot sequence before and after:
Old Drive
Chime to Login Screen: 46 seconds
Chime to launch Safari and open web page: 2:58
Momentus XT
Chime to Login Screen: 22 seconds
Chime to launch Safari and open web page: 38 seconds
So, the new drive can boot and open a web page faster than the old drive could get to the login screen. Altogether 2 minutes and 20 seconds faster. Not that I reboot very often, but it gives you some idea of how much faster everything is. I was so fed up with how slow my MBP was that I almost bought a new MBP for $2000, then I almost bought a 200 Gb SSD that wouldn't have had enough space for $340 (would have had to also buy an optibay and worry about losing hibernation or shock protection). So glad I just spent $130 and got a huge performance boost for very little money or hassle.

Product name: Macbook pro 13-inch
Processor speed: 2.5 GHz
Memory: 4 GB
Storage capacity: 500 GB
Software: OS X 10.9.4 Â
In the memory tab in activity monitor, it shows kernel_task which takes up 440 MB. It takes a huge amount of my memory. Also, my macbook pro is running down. I believe that one of the reason for this is kernel task. How do I fix this?Â

Just tried Camp Tune - Paragon's software for on the fly resizing of bootcamp partition. I just did it and it worked like a charm.... no backup this and that and reinstall... nothing. Downloaded the file, burned the disk, boot with the disk and press resize (see instructions on the site).

For the first time today since getting my MP back in April I had to take out my boot hard drive which is also the one that came with the system. I pulled out the HDD with it's attached shoe/slide thing and noticed that the ape/baffon/genius that had fitted the factory drive had over tightened the screws thus squashing and tearing the washer/jacket that the screw sits in. Now being a perfectionist and also the fact that I paid nearly 2000 for it this isn't what i expect from Apple. My question is though: will they take my word that it wasn't me and replace the slide for free for will they say that i did it and say I should pay for a replacement?
Note: I just did a bit more research and found the the proper name for the shoe/slide thing is hdd carrier.

Two strange issues that I can't fix on my new MB Air 13 with MS Office for MAC 2011 and Excel.
1) I can't get the Standard Toolbar to show up when I open a new worksheet. I go to view, toolbars and then see that the Standard Toolbar is checked, but it doesn't show up. The only way to get it to show up is to do a series of steps:
- uncheck Standard Toolbar menu and go back out;
- go back in and check the Standard Toolbar and back to the spreadsheet
- the Standard Toolbar still doesn't show up;
- so then I click on the Layout tab on the ribbon and then it shows up!
2) I can't see the bottom of the window/spreadsheet - which means I can't resize the window. To resolve this, I have to do these steps:
- open system preferences and change my MBA screen resolution from 1440 x 900 down to 1280 x 800
- then go back to the spreadsheet, and resize the window (make it smaller on the screen)
- go back and resize the window back to 1440 x 900
- and then close the system preferences at this point, the Excel spreadsheet window is smaller and I can see/use the bottom of the screen to resize, etc.
Can't figure out what setting I have wrong or why I can't get Excel for Mac 2011 to work correctly on the MB Air screen.
