View 1 RepliesI have had my Powerbook G4 for a few years now and everything has been working well. When I turned it off yesterday everything looked normal. But when I turned it on this morning, everything was huge. All the tool bars, the screen,, everything is blown up. This is really inconvenient and hard to read... how can I return my Mac to normal and make everything small again?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got my unibody MacBook right after they came out, probably Oct (?) 2008. I was gonna buy the AppleCare but didn't and now, there are huge chunks of dust smack in the middle of my screen. Any tips on what to do? I went to the Apple Store at the Mall of America and the Genius was a total dick, saying since it was past warranty, even though it's a manufacturing defect I have to pay to get it fixed. I live in Chicago so I didn't want it fixed there anyway, I wanted to see what they'd do.
I remember my gf has the white plastic one and when the plastic at the bottom was cracking they replaced it way after warranty since it was a known defect. Won't they do that for me too? I'm fully prepared to go in and raise total hell if necessary.
I made some motion on the mouse and now everything on my imac is huge (type, icons, everything). No matter what I do on the mouse now, the display, icons, type, etc won't go back to the normal size. Any suggestions?

This is unnerving. At random intervals, my screen flashes. It more like "winks" - as though a screen capture was being made. Actually, when you make a real screen capture, the screen doesn't wink, but that's the impression I get. The screen doesn't flicker or flash like it's a hardware bad connection, but goes through a fast, but continuous normal-white-normal cycle. I'm looking at my activity monitor to see if something is unusual, but I can't tell. Everything I look up seems to be real.

I am using a wireless mouse on my intel iMac, and when I am using Safari, and no other program, when I am navigating, the screen will suddenly zoom in and get huge. I don't think I am doing anything repeatable when this happens. I cannot do anything to zoom back out. So, I need to go back a page and start over at the normal screen size. This is annoying, especially when I have just reached a page I need to see.

But every time I save a new version of the project (and even rename it, store it on another drive, etc.), the changes I make to the new version are also made to the original.I'm also not getting the popup "duplicate project" window (which should give me a choice of where and how to save the project) I'm supposed to get when I click on "Duplicate Project." How can I simply save a fixed version of my project?Â

I have been reading that several people are seeing much cooler temperatures on their Mac notebooks and they think it's due to better graphics drivers with the update to 10.6.3. I however thought about the huge performance hit in OpenGL going from Leopard to Snow Leopard (probably same thing). So I decided to check my OpenGL results after installing 10.6.3. However, I didn't check my xBench results before upgrading to 10.6.3. I went and found an old result which shows 67 points for "OpenGL Graphics Test." My new result for "OpenGL Graphics Test" is 111 points. When I check the xBench archives, people with rev "C" MBA's with 10.6.2 all show OpenGL Graphics Test scores in the 60s.
If this is correct, we could all have some big improvements that really show huge effects on the MBA. It should help everyone running Snow Leopard. It should lead to graphics performance gains and lower heat due to graphics demands. Could someone else running 10.6.2 on a 2.13 GHz CPU MBA run an xBench test before the 10.6.3 upgrade? Then upgrade to 10.6.3 and run another xBench test. Then please report back here with your results for OpenGL Graphics Test and hope this result is great for all of us. I believe this would be a big improvement for the original MBA too?
I just replaced a 5400 rpm 320 Gb Western Digital (not the stock drive) with a Momentus XT in my late 2007 MBP, and I couldn't be more impressed. The eternal beach balls are gone. Granted, I've never had an SSD, but the speed boost from this thing is unbelievable. I didn't even do a clean install, just a restore from Time Machine. I didn't do formal benchmarks, but I did time my boot sequence before and after:
Old Drive
Chime to Login Screen: 46 seconds
Chime to launch Safari and open web page: 2:58
Momentus XT
Chime to Login Screen: 22 seconds
Chime to launch Safari and open web page: 38 seconds
So, the new drive can boot and open a web page faster than the old drive could get to the login screen. Altogether 2 minutes and 20 seconds faster. Not that I reboot very often, but it gives you some idea of how much faster everything is. I was so fed up with how slow my MBP was that I almost bought a new MBP for $2000, then I almost bought a 200 Gb SSD that wouldn't have had enough space for $340 (would have had to also buy an optibay and worry about losing hibernation or shock protection). So glad I just spent $130 and got a huge performance boost for very little money or hassle.
I recently reinstalled Lion on my Air to clean up a few issues, but it seems to have created new ones. This is what I see at the top of Activity Monitor pretty much constantly now. Â

In the memory tab in activity monitor, it shows kernel_task which takes up 440 MB. It takes a huge amount of my memory. Also, my macbook pro is running down. I believe that one of the reason for this is kernel task. How do I fix this?Â
Can the accessories made for MBA Rev.A be used for MBA Rev.B ?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been following this forum for over 2 months now and I'm proud to say that it helped me to finally make the decision to buy a mac. I've always been an iPod-fanatic but a completely new OS seemed like a very drastic change. I recently moved houses and now I live about 200 metres from an apple store, so I guess it was just a matter of time before I caved in .Now that I've been using my new laptop for about a week I can honestly say that I've never enjoyed using a computer as much as I do now. I'm already getting frustrated when using my PC (a Dell Inspiron 1525) to transfer files because it doesn't function as fluently as my mac, I believe that this is a good sign . What I like the most about my new machine are the multi-touch gestures on the trackpad and the very good battery life (I can easily watch over 3.5 hours of video with Airport turned off and low light conditions. Coming from barely 1h15 of word processing on my Dell, I can say that I'm quite impressed). I'm also a lot more productive on this computer than I ever was on any other laptop, I don't know what it is but i'm guessing it has something to do with the fullscreen option in Pages '09. Also, the backlit keyboard is incredibly useful when instant messaging in my room in the middle of the night without my parents knowing, or typing in dark lecture halls.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm considering getting a hard case for my new Macbook, mostly considering the Speck See Thru Satin since I can't really find other good products, and was wondering if they scratch the aluminum on the macbook? I know people have said that hard cases have made it even worse from debris getting in between the outer Macbook casing and the hard case but I was wondering if there was something special, either about the new aluminum Macbooks or the See Thru satin, that made this not happen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I picked up my 13"MBP at the apple store earlier this week I also picked up the incase 13" neoprene sleeve at the same time. I initially was going to order an STM sleeve online like I have for my 15" PBG4 but after looking at the sleeve in the store and liking the extra soft interior I decided to give it a go.When I unpacked my MBP and put it in the sleeve, however, I find the fit a little loose to my liking. It's not loose in the sense that the laptop slides around inside the case, rather the case seems to be too thick or something because it seems like there is extra material that I can grab and pinch even when the laptop is inside. This doesn't happen with my STM sleeve and my PBG4, the fit is more snug and there doesn't seem to be any excess material anywhere.I'm not sure if it's just extra padding from the incase sleeve, or if the fit could be improved. I was thinking though, if the sleeve was made for the 13" macbook (plastic) it's a little thicker than the unibody designs, and maybe this difference in thickness is what I'm feeling as the slight "looseness"?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI finally got my mid 2011 MBA to connect to my preferred network when waking from sleep. It is something you may have read elsewhere but I can confirm it worked for me. You have to disable the "deep sleep mode". When a Air goes into deep sleep is when (for me) it failed to wake my network back up. I switched off deep sleep and not only does it wake up faster it wakes up connected to the Wi-fi network. How do you turn off deep sleep? Using the terminal commandÂ
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0Â
If you are like me you may say what is a terminal command? Go to spotlight (that magnifying glass icon top right corner of your screen) and type terminal. Click the Terminal next to Applications. Copy paste the command I posted above and supply your password if you have one. What this does is disables the deep sleep mode that the Air's use for maximum battery life while left sleeping and on battery. This is why my Air always connected to wi-fi when it was plugged in to power, because it never enters deep sleep when on external power. Now the computer goes to sleep and wakes up as intended and no more turning airport on and off to start wi-fi back up. Try for yourself and if it does not work...your Air is broken (I guess). Â
If it did not work and you want to put the computer back to the way it was go back to terminal as above and then copy and paste this command back in.Â
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3Â Â
In case you worried your computer now does not sleep, it does. It goes into plain sleep mode as the old Macbooks that awoke just fine used to do.

During installation, my graphics got all screwed up. You can see a screenshot of what's going on at this link: [URL]. I'm actually writing on the defective computer, so it's hard for me to see what's in the screenshot. Here's what I did so far. I tried removing half of the RAM first, then the second half, the problem persist. I rebooted on a different system, it's still there (so not software). I tried Hardware Test utility, it says everything is fine. I unplugged the Video Card, cleaned it a little along with the connectors, nothing. It happened DURING the update to 10.4.11 (not after I rebooted). I'm pretty sure I can take screenshots of it, so it's not simply in the connectors to the monitors. It happens on both my monitors (also when I unplug one of them).

It has happened wile using PS (CS4), Aperture, Google Earth, Safari and just in sleep mode. Here is one of the Kernel Panics along with system info. ps. The Mac started kernel panics before I loaded two additional hard drives and the wireless card (pci express).

I'd be interested in hearing what people are doing about backup with their huge iMac drives. Time Machine needs a drive somewhat bigger than their iMac HD, but not many of us want to shell out $500+ for 4T backup drive. I've been thinking of partitioning the iMac and backing up only one, smaller volume via Time Machine. Anyone else doing that?
View 14 Replies View RelatedLately the menu bar will randomly throw in a huge gap between icons. Initially I thought it was a specific app, but now it's happening with all sorts of random icons there...definitely not the same icon each time.
The icons you see on the left are the ones I launched after the gap appeared.
Restarting my machine seems to be the only solution to removing the gap.

I've also tried trashing the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist pref but that didn't do the trick.
I never had the problem before, but now all of a sudden mtmd and mds processes consume huge amounts of CPU (+250% together) and I cannot really work on the laptop. It pretty much started after my external Apple 24" monitor froze and I had to hard boot.I am running Parallels and made Bootcamp "private" because of other performance problems with mds.I am also running backups to Time Machine, but have now been forced to turn this off.
When running Kaspersky AND Time Machine turned on - I cannot work at all.So, was there ever found any solution to this (other than turning off Time Machine, which is probably not the intension from Apple).I am running X Lion on a 15" Mac Book Pro from June 2010, 2,66GHz, Intel Core i7, 4 Gb DDR3. All software updated as far as I know. Also, just updated the firmware on the Time Capsule.

While the GeForce GT 330M featured in the new 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros has already been found in competing notebook PCs, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro sports the Nvidia 320M, a graphics processor created just for Apple.
An Nvidia spokesperson told AppleInsider Tuesday that the new 320M was made especially for Apple, and is the successor to the GeForce 9400M, introduced in 2008. The 320M is an integrated graphics chipset for notebooks based on Intel's Core 2 Duo line of processors.
According to Notebookcheck.net, the 320M does not have dedicated graphics memory, but uses shared memory for the system for its graphics processing, giving it poorer performance than a GPU with dedicated memory. The 320M (not to be confused with the GeForce GT 320M) is based on the GT216 core, and offers 48 shader cores.
The report said the gaming performance of the 320M should be comparable to, but slightly better than, a 310M. The 320M also supports PureVideo HD for high definition decoding within the GPU. The processor can also be used to encode videos.
In announcing its new line of MacBook Pros on Tuesday, Apple revealed that the GeForce 320M GPU offers up to 80 percent faster graphics processing. It also helps the 13-inch MacBook Pro achieve 10 hours of battery life. Apple called the 320M the "fastest integrated graphics processor on the market."
The 13-inch model also includes faster Core 2 Duo processors, reaching speeds up to 2.66GHz and featuring a 1066MHz frontside bus with 3MB of shared L2 cache.
Featured on the 15- and 17-inch models is the 330M, which Apple said is more than twice as fast as the low-end 320M. Apple said the GT 330M "provides smooth, crisp on-screen graphics for the most demanding 3D games, creative software and technical applications."
The 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros also include automatic graphics switching, which Apple has dubbed a "breakthrough" technology. It allows the system to switch graphics processors on the fly, giving users performance when they need it and better battery efficiency when they don't. AppleInsider first revealed Apple was planning dual graphics technology in its future MacBook Pros in February.
