I've used the disk repair utility and repaired successfully. My book is still frozen at the logo and spinning cog. I have to hit the power button to shut down - And the hard drive gets super heated. What else to do?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile trying to pepair permissions systom freeze up. So I put in the startup disk hit restrat holding down c and tried to repair permissions that way and it froze up that way too. I had to manually turn off machine.

Lately I've noticed that when I repair permissions, it's the same files that keep appearing the log of files being "repaired"... which leads me to believe they're not actually being repaired at all.
It's at the point where I can repair permissions once, generating a log of repaired files, and then if I repair permissions again immediately afterwards (whether I've closed and reopened Disk Utility in the mean time or not), the same exact list of files appears as being repaired.
I've searched google for a solution to this and I came across some and followed the instructions (reset safari, clear cache, run onyx, repair permissions). It works... for about two hours, then safari is back to lagging like crazy. I'm using a late 2008 MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and all the latest software updates.

On one of our MacBook Pros (Late-2011), running the latest OS X 10.7.3, Disk Utility says the volume needs to be repaired. When I use Disk Utility from the Recovery HD, it says the volume appears to be OK. I verified by using fsck in single-user mode, and it found no problems either. Which do I believe? Is this a sign of a soon-to-fail hard drive?Â
View 9 Replies View RelatedI already repaired the rights on the disk. Mac does not drive down, obviously after certain programs have been started. One of those programs is itunes. I have to use the power switch button for switching it off. Mac can be driven down normally immediately after start-up.

Disk Utility says there are a bunch of disk permissions that need repairing. I hit repair and disk utility says that it repaired those disk permissions. But when I verify, it says they still need to be repaired.

I'm not really sure what to do or what exactly is wrong. I'm hoping not to reboot or reinstall all together, but if I have to... I suppose there's no choice. I tried 'Verify Disk' from the utilities, but is fails and says

(It should be 712836 instead of 712840)
Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 171417 instead of 171413)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

I tried doing a 'Repair Disk' from the installation CD, but it says it fails because it could not unmount the HD.
Since a week or 3 my Imac is bleeping whenever the harddisk is put to work. Before this it was impossible to make a time machine copy, it would hang at a certain point. I recently did a disk utility scan which could not be finished (aborted by the system) as it was saying (translated from Dutch): Â

So I put the installdisk 1 in, but the Imac spits it out, refuses to start up in harddisk repair mode or any other mode at all. It just spits it out and starts as usual. Install disk 2 it doesnt spit out, but I can only open a read me file. Like said, the Imac works fine, except that it is guided by literaly hundreds of beeps in high and low, short and long. I feel like being at a supermarket having my items scanned. That is what it sounds like. It is quite vocal but annoying and seem to multiply every day. In the beginning it only did at start up just a few beeps, then it got more, and now it beeps also in sleep mode. Â
I cannot do a disk repair, also not with the latest OS X update (snowleopard, since Lion is not working on my 1GB drive). I do notice though that the difference in this error code is getting bigger, it used to be just one block difference, now it is 7.  Â
Also I took the memory modules out yesterday and put them back in, as I heard this can also help get rid of the beeps. It did not solve anything at all.I can't find anything on this problem on internet, because all beep related topics are about the error codes for the RAM drives. These are not the same sounds. Â Another attempt was to install the cms program to avoid overheating fans. Also no improvement.

when using OnyX or Disk First Aid, a message states to restart the computer, holding Command-R and to repair my disk.Every single time, the disk turns out to be OK.Â
Question 1: Is this a false reading, or is the disk actually being fixed by the Control-R combination?Â
Question 2: If it is NOT a false reading, since my programs don't crash and I always shut down properly, what could cause the errors?Â

I seem to be getting an error message when i run Disk Utility, it says "Invalid Block Count, your disk is corrupt and needs to be repaired".  I then repair it using the Lion recovery disk and it repairs it. Maybe a month or so down the line it appears again I then do the same and the end result is the same, can anyone help with this as it is worrying me. Also is there any way you can get rid of the bad sectors in the HDD when problems appear?Â
View 4 Replies View RelatedDisk Warrior reported a damaged resource header that cannot be repaired. The resource header is in an "older" file format (rsrc). I have been having fairly frequent freezes of the system and Disk Utility reporting a corrupted HD which Disk Unility is always able to repair and report the HD to be O.K. Could the damaged header be the cause of the freezes? If so, can anything be done about it if Warrior says it cannot be repaired?

This time everything in utility window red. Message is Fatal Hardware error to disk utility. Back-up if not completely failed and replace with new drive.
Not great at behind the scenes with my mac. Does this mean a shop visit. Any estimate on cost to me. Had lots of Macs. This is the first to crash and burn and its not that old.

I have a 4 TB Western Digital external hard drive that I use with my MacBook Pro, running Mavericks. When I plug it in, I get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer", with the option of either ejecting or ignoring. So, I ignore it, and the drive is, in fact, both readable and writeable. So, this is a minor annoyance at worst, unless it truly does become unreadable.Â
I opened Disk Utility. The disk is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), there's a single partition of the proper size, and both the disk and the partition show no errors when I run Verify Disk. The disk permissions buttons are both greyed out, and owners enabled shows "no".Â
This doesn't happen with other external hard drives I use. However, when I connect the other hard drives, they appear in Disk Utility immediately below my internal hard drive and above my SuperDrive, while the problematic external drive appears below the line that appears underneath SuperDrive.Â

I want to be able to change the icon of my Windows partition in OSX from the drab HDD one. So, when I tried to copy and paste a new .icn file in Get Info, it wouldn't paste. I think it is because the drive is set as read only. in disk utilities, the "repair disk permissions" is greyed out when windows drive is selected.

I've had the computer 5 months, and today randomly decided to "repair disk permissions" on disk utility.
Estimated time remaining is 32 mins. So far there is already a huge list of details, mostly things that are supposed to be set at 95 or 1 but are set to 0 (not sure what this means).
Is it supposed to take this long? What exactly is it fixing, and how did these problems arise from simple regular use? Will I notice a difference in my computer's speed afterwords?
I accidentally set a external disk's permissions to No Access. I can see it in disk utility and it says its mounted and working but is no longer on my desktop. I've searched but haven't found anything that works for me. I can't see the disk to change the permissions back.

What I should do since Disk Utility won't repair the problem?
When I open Disk Utility and select one of the 2 volumes in the left pane, the buttons "Verify disk permissions" and "Repair disk permissions" remain greyed out. Only the "Repair disk" and "Verify disk" buttons are enabled. This is not the startup Volume. For this volume all 4 buttons are enabled.
How can I repair the disk permissions on the volume?

What the difference between running Repair/Verify (Permissions or the Disk itself) on the hard drive or the boot volume listed in the window?
Some say just run it on the boot volume, others say run it on both.
Is there an advantage in doing both (if so, why) or should it be just the boot volume?

After reading on the internet that you should repair disk permissions around once a month or something I decided to do it after not doing it for ages, so I go and do it, then shut it off and leave it for a bit, and then when I turn it on I open Safari and I notice that its taking a really long time to load Apple's Start Page, so I think nothing of it and turn it off again, then a bit later I turn on and I find the internet on it still just as slow.
So I am wondering if its cause I did it or because of my router.
Unfortunately, I think that Disk Utility is being dishonest with me.
I've been having some trouble with my Macbook Pro locating the startup folder in restarts (sometimes I get the flashing question-mark folder unless I hold down option and manually reselect OS X as the startup volume), and I noticed something very interesting (that's probably unrelated to my problem) when repairing permissions.
Disk Utility indicates the same EXACT problems... and the same EXACT repairs... EVERY single time I run Repair Permissions. I copy and pasted the results of Permissions Repair into Microsoft Word documents and looked at the word counts, and they're always exactly the same � 546 words, and the same items that are repaired.
How is it possible that the same items are always broken if they're supposedly being repaired? I run the Permissions repair over and over and over again... not doing anything else with the computer in between, and this still happens. I tried restarting, but that didn't change anything. This is the output that Disk Utility constantly gives me
