MacBook Pro :: Magsafe Connector On Laptop Case Damaged - How To Repair
Sep 2, 2010I dropped my MacBook Pro only about 12 inches and the corner of the shell where the Magsafe connector is located was bent slightly inward. When connected to the AC power there is enough power going through to run the laptop. However, the battery is not charging and now has no green lights when I push the button on the battery. I checked and the battery has been through 129 cycles so should still be good. I'm assuming that means something was damaged with the Magsafe connection when the corner was dented. Does anyone have any advice? How much it would cost to repair the Magsafe connector? My MacBook Pro was purchased in 2007 and I have no other issues with it. Would it be worth repairing or should I get a new one?

I told him to go to system preferences and he gets an error message saying something about 'system preferences may be damaged' And it does not open. Is there a way to fix this? He has the snow leopard installation disks etc.

Mar 15, 2012My iMac has been crashing a lot lately and finally it's hard drive just up and failed. I have been doing hourly Time Machine backups to a concatenated RAID set (2 USB drives of 1 TB each). However, I think the iMac crashed while backing up and hosed the RAID controller.I've since plugged the two disks of the RAID into my MacBook Pro to see if I can repair them. I can see the individual disks of the RAID in Disk Utility. I can even verify and repair them. But i can't do that with the RAID in the sidebar, and it won't mount on the desktop. When I try to eject it from the DIsk Utility file menu, it says disks are in use.
I'm pretty sure my data on the two disks is intact, but I can't seem to get the RAID to mount as the single concatenated set on a desktop, which makes it inaccessble. Is there a way to repair the JBOD RAID without losing all my data, so I can then restore from the latest backup to my hosed iMac?

Jun 8, 2012There's a flashing folder at startup and won't boot. I've tried the disk utility on the install cd but it cannot be repaired. It repaired it once, but when restarted it happened again. Ive also tried to reset the pram (not ire if thats what its called) and tried recovery hd, but those didnt work either. I want to backup my files, mainly pictures, but don't know how or if it's even possible through disc utility.

Aug 1, 2008I've been having problems with iCal and would like to reinstall it using Utilities Disc 1 with the Superdrive. However, there only appears to be an option to reinstall ALL the bundled software, at which point I've aborted the reinstallation process. Sledgehammer to crack a nut! It's only iCal I'm having trouble with (e.g searches not clearing down, "today" button greys out.) If it's not possible to reinstall just iCal from disc, does anyone know a way to "repair or mend" a malfunctioning iCal?

Or will it be okay if I just format my 500gb hard drive completely and install the fresh copy of Lion OS X again? I don't have a recovery disc or what so ever provided by Apple anymore. I have a DMG installation file of Lion OS X and a USB flash drive(4 GB approx). How can I repair the disk partition without the recovery start up disc?

i have even tried to fix the error from the bootable CD, but same error. i even upgraded to snow leopard but no apparent change. i dont even know if this is the cause of the problem. but all other stuff is OK. even the boot CD hardware thorough check was all ok.i still get some noise of the fan when i boot up for a couple of minutes then it goes away.but temperatures are quite good and fan speed is around 800rpm at the moment and no sound is to be heard.

Mar 9, 2012I could not find any recent helpful answers via Google, but eventually discovered, by trial and error, that you need to delete the failed downloads in three places namely: /Library/Updates (this is probably unnecessary)
and the *two* files here:- /private/var/folders/<complicated long path>/<name> where <name> ends in .pkg and also in .pkg.resumeData (i.e. the "same name" twice)
I found out where these were being saved by (*immediately* after the update-failure), typing find /private/var/folders -newerct "1 minute ago" -name "*.resumeData" and sure enough, these corresponded to the failed downloads. I removed them with sudo rm /private/var/folders/<complicated long path discovered via find/<name>.pgk sudo rm /private/var/folders/<complicated long path discovered via find/<name>.pgk.resumeData
and then the software update started working again instead of always aborting with e.g. "iTunes: partially downloaded" etc. The reason for the original failure is my poor internet service that constantly breaks halfway through any long-ish downloads.
An example of the actual filepath on my 10.6.8 Mac OSX is:
/private/var/folders/02/027LjtRMGXSZNggzpqLQg++++TI/-Caches-/com.apple.SoftwareU pdate/swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/<same amount again in length>
in other words, really long winded and very difficult to find (I have been trying to do this all day and could not find anything via the www) - I hope it helps you!

I am currently using a Windows 7 machine with the latest iTunes build.
My iTunes library is located and synced to the cloud with Dropbox. I also sync my iPhone with this iTunes library, this will be essential with both computers.
Now, when I get my MBA, I plan to first do a complete reinstallation, removing unrequired software and drivers as well as eradicate unused languages.
I then plan to setup iTunes.

Oct 9, 2009My MBP recently had a bunch of problems with the logic board and speakers. I brought it into the Apple Store (on Monday) and they gave me the option of them sending it into a repair center, or them repairing it locally in store. I requested that they sent out just because I was curious to see how long it would take. To my surprise, my MBP arrived, fixed and as good as new on my doorstep today. That's amazingly fast for sending it out to a offsite repair center. The repair center is in Philadelphia. I live in Maine. You do the math. When I've had things repaired locally in the Apple Store it's taken weeks to repair instead of days because they need to order the parts.
Anyways, the point of this thread was to suggest to people that they choose the offsite repair option. It's amazingly fast, and it saved me a trip to the Apple Store (they shipped my MBP directly to my house).
OS X :: Viewing Partially Overwritten Video File
May 10, 2009I've got a video file which was deleted and partially overwritten by other files. It's about 100MB but there's only ~2MB or so that's been overwritten. Data Rescue 2 didn't recover it, but testdisk did (testdisk seems to be able to recover files that are partially overwritten, so the headers of the file must be intact.) Now that I've recovered the movie, it won't play. Is there any software out there that can play corrupted video files? Is there any way of recovering parts of the video file?

Apr 29, 2012I just purchased garageband '11 on my MacBookPro, and as such it was available for me to download to my iMac. On my MacBookPro the additional loops installed perfectly by choosing a loop that wasn't installed and following the prompts. However this didn't work on the Mac.
When I clicked on a loop that wasn't present, it gave me the same prompt, but when the Software Update runs, it reports that all software is upto date. Then when you go back to choose a loop that's greyed out in Garageband, it says that the process to download has been initiated and to check the status in the software updater! Kind of a circular loop.

May 3, 2012Three times in the last week iTunes (10.6.1) is missing coverart for about 30 of 300 movies. This is also happening with music artwork. The artwork can be individually repopulated using "Get Info" but this is really just a bandaid and I would like to know if anyone knows why this is happening and how to fix the root cause.

Aug 28, 2009So here's something that's been on my mind for a while, but never figured it was worth while asking...anybody. But with Snow Leopard coming out tomorrow which feature Expose in the dock now thought i'd ask. I'm sure to some degree this question boils over as your personal productivity preference because i'm wondering what sizes your windows are normally at. For example, say you use Safari or Firefox; is that window taking up the whole screen? If so, why? Ever really think about it? Do you have it full screen cause you wanna surf the web and do your research or procrastinate at the biggest possible size available ...or.... is your Safari/Firefox window not fully screened, simply because you normally have more than just one Firefox or Safari window open, and it makes it easier to navigate multiple windows when they ain't taking up the whole screen?
For example, iTunes for me is possibly the only window I ever fully enjoy being full screen. I love cover flow so have a "space" (3) devoted to iTunes in full screen. In Space 2 (of 6) I have FireFox in full screen but many time throughout the day hate that it's full screen cause I easily need to navigate back to something else, such as the finder or w/e. Anyways, i'm really wondering what others do here, I think it'll be interesting to hear what's up. With SL coming out tomorrow i'm sure Expose in the dock will help big time, but nevertheless.

The scary thing is, I'm not running anything but safari. Jun 2, 2008Well, my question is very simple: I have a MBA and this other laptop from work, a crappy HP which is old as hell. I'm planning to use Remote Disc to reinstall my Leopard, since the upgrade to 10.5.3 really screwed things here, and I can't figure out why. Point is: instead of running all Leopard installation thru Remote Disc, I would prefer to share Leopard disc 1 over Remote Disc and restore it to a partition on my external HD, making a clone of it, which would install *much* faster. Has anyone tried anything like this? There's any Windows program which allows me to rip a Mac DVD to a Mac partition?
