MacBook Pro :: Getting Hot While Working - Fan Damaged?
Mar 17, 2010
I was browsing the internet for a couple of hours when I noticed the computer started getting super hot. The fans are going full blast, and the keyboard is also hot. The scary thing is, I'm not running anything but safari. I'm afraid that given where the fall happened (the back of the computer) that I have damaged one of the fans, because one side of the computer (the left) is burning hot and the right is just normal. What should I do? I dunno how much a new fan costs but I'm guessing not cheap.
Let's start a thread of damaged but working MBPs! I'm sure this has been done before, but let's start a new one. Cracked, dented, damaged screens... Let's see some pics. Who has the worst damaged but working MBP?
just wanted to see how these machines handle abuse. I don't plan on abusing mine, but I am thinking about giving my brother one, and he is careful, but sometimes slips. I know the aluminum bodies aren't that strong, I've bumped my 12" into my car door, and it got a dent. Now I'm very very careful with it. Anybody else got stories or pics?
External IDE drive,- removed from a dead PC. chock full of files. Mounted via USB perfectly on the 'Vista PC and I am pretty certain the drive mounted on new MacBook Pro running 10.6.2 (using Wiebe's external docking device) Many documents were present and viewable on the Mac
Drive then placed in plastic bag on counter in dining room. Two weeks later I purchased a USB enclosure for the drive. Installed easily. Powered up immediately, I can hear the drive spinning.
Connected to the same macbook pro to which the drive had, two weeks earlier been connected, and mounted. Except now the drive does not mount
Power is on. I can hear the drive spin But now the drive does not mount. Disk Utility sees the drive but it does not mount. Mac asks me if I want to reformat the drive as it is unrecognizable. Drive Genius and Disk Recovery see the drive but can find no files.
What might have happened? Did damage occur by putting in an enclosure? I have put numerous hard drives in enclosures and never had this problem.I know I pushed in the cables tightly and assume that the drive would not power nor the drive be seen if IDE ribbon cable and power line were not properly fastened. I am puzzled. Anything I can do? would like to save these folks' files.
I have an external hard drive attached to my MacBook Pro. Today my MacBoor Pro freezed and I had to turn it off pressing and holding the power button. After turning it on the external hard drive didn't appear in desktop. I checked the disk utility that comes with mac and it shows the HD but I can't mount it.
I have new MacBook Aluminum, it's totally cool. But there is one problem that i worry about. I can't tour on AirPort. when i hold "tour on" button, MacBook just freezes and then i can't do anything, just shut it down by pressing shutdown button for 5 seconds. i can't find out what is a problem? it's Mac X OS, or AirPort card problem? what should i do? will reinstalling of the OS ?
i even thought that it could be problem of my Mac X installation DVD, could it be damaged?
I've noticed, that on some of my unibody's macbook pro keys are feeling as if they are wearing out. For example, if i press on the "S" key for a long time, push it up and back, I can feel it squeeck or scratch. The keys do work, but this just gets me concerned if it is beginning to get damaged. Is this normal? Also, can the keyboard get damaged if someone pushes a key too hard?
I left my MBP in sleep mode in my truck for about 4 hours in 30~ degree weather and when I brought it in it was freezing. I opened it up pretty quickly after bringing it in. Will this hurt anything?
I tried (and later succeded) installing spotify but I can't purge an earlier damaged installation file from the trash can. It just hangs saying it's deleting.
I spilled coffee on my macbook about a month ago and put it into a bag of rice for a week to try and get the moisture out.. but it had been turned on for a while after it was spilled, so had already done some damage. Basically, the hard drive seems to be completely in tact: all of my files are still there, unharmed, and the screen works perfectly.Only a few of the keys on the keyboard, however, work... basically just the top row, space bar, and enter keys. Also, the mouse pad stll works to move your finger around on, but every time i click with it it acts as if the CONTROL key is being pressed down, and therefore uses a "right-click" function rather than a normal click! this is ok for opening some things?I sm a broke student and am trying to work out how to fix this with the least money possible.. have seen online that you can buy an entire top case for the mac and replace that (my house mates are fairly computer savvy and would be able to d that for me)... but how do i know if this will fix it? could it be something with the logic board instead?
I dropped my Mac Book and broke the screen. More importantly it has also damaged the hard drive. I took it to a repairers who could not read it. And yes of course I am one of those idiots who keep everything on it but does not back it up. So some questions: How screwed am I? Are these data retrieval companys you see advertised any good? Which is the best one in the UK? And how much will it cost?
I have a Macbook Pro and something happened to the audio jack recently. Not sure what but I have a 3 year old and pc husband at home. Basically the inside of the jack went from being an inny - where you can plug in an audio plug, to an outie - where you can only insert about half of your plug and it won't go in any further. When I go into Sound settings - Output it says the selected device has no controls, and the speaker icon on my status bar is greyed out. I brought it in and they said they would need to replace the logic board in order to fix the jack - $1,000.... yikes.
So long story short I am wondering if it is just the audio jack then could I buy usb speakers and use those instead? Any work around at all? I wish there were a way to just tell the computer to ignore anything the audio jack was telling it, but I was told that is not an option either.
I'm trying to figure out what happened, and what is wrong, with my computer screen. I know it's not a dead pixel, since it's still visable. It's like a burned image, like you would get on a TV. I didn't do any physical damage to it, I know that for sure. Here's a photo. It's the ghosty off-white area that's on the left hand side of the black rectangle. (I made it back so you can see it better on camera, it's not the problem).
I have a Macbook Pro Retina 15'' early 2013 since one year ago. I´ve noticed some distortion when playing loud music but I cannot say if it happened before. If the speaker can be damaged because of playing loud music? Is there any way of checking if the speaker has been damaged?
Info: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)
I dropped my MacBook Pro only about 12 inches and the corner of the shell where the Magsafe connector is located was bent slightly inward. When connected to the AC power there is enough power going through to run the laptop. However, the battery is not charging and now has no green lights when I push the button on the battery. I checked and the battery has been through 129 cycles so should still be good. I'm assuming that means something was damaged with the Magsafe connection when the corner was dented. Does anyone have any advice? How much it would cost to repair the Magsafe connector? My MacBook Pro was purchased in 2007 and I have no other issues with it. Would it be worth repairing or should I get a new one?
My 6 months old macbook pro 13 hard drive was damaged. It was replaced at the apple store and in order to recover my information they suggested to buy a "cradle" to download the information or use it as a separate drive. Does anyone know the spec or point me in the right direction on where to find one?
As you can see, there are a bunch of Apps that I have completely lost. I did nothing - at one moment they were there, and then a little later I open up the Apps folder to see this. When I try to click on them, they all say that I can't open the file because it may be damaged or incomplete. I haven't installed anything recently, or messed with any settings. The programs are just gone. Can anyone clue me in on to what I need to do to fix this? I just got this computer last Tuesday, so I doubt I should be having any problems.
How can I delete files from a hard drive that I removed from my damaged PC computer using MacBook Pro. I can transfer files from the PC hard drive to the MacBook Pro, but then I want to delete those file from the PC hard drive so that I can have a spare external hard drive for my Mac.
To begin with, I own a MBP Intel Core Duo 2.0/2 Gigs of ram. I've had this laptop for roughly 18 months and do not have Applecare. I take extreme good care of all my stuff and still baby it till this day. I have NEVER bumped the laptop against anything, accidently dropped it too hard on the desk or anything similar along the lines. Essentially, looking new. About 2 days ago, I was working with my laptop and I closed the lid which made the computer go to sleep. Everything all normal & no appearance of anything! Around mid-night, I opened the MBP's lid to check my email. (Computer awakes, I can hear the Superdrive awake) then boom, a blank screen. The monitor did not turn on then burn out, it was always off. Similar to if you dim your monitor all the way. I can still see the desktop however, there is no light. If I take my flashlight and point it to the desktop, I can see everything. I called a few places, and they described it is the Inverter board or could be the fluorescent bulb that is damaged. My reasoning for the inverter board is faulty is because when a fluorescent bulb goes out it, it tends to flicker at first. Researching this forum, I noticed most MBP users LCD's that go out, they flicker but, mine just went out and I can still see the desktop. Where can I order the inverter board? I tried [URL] but they're out of stock. I will change the inverter board myself because it will be quicker and I need to use my laptop. It is currently hooked up to an external monitor until I can get this fixed.
I've had my MacBook Pro for a couple months, and everything works perfectly fine with it, except the DVD drive. Whenever I try watching movies on it, it always keeps skipping over nonexistent "damaged areas", even though nothing is wrong with the actual movie DVD. I watch the movies on my TV, and they still work fine, so the problem has to be something with the Mac laptop.
I have a water damage MacBook Air. I am not sure what spilled on it. It has been damaged for a while now. Apple says it will be $740 for the full repair. The Mic nor the speakers work everything else works perfectly. Is there any way i can repair this? Without replacing the logic-board. I am really just looking for the cheapest way to get the speakers and mic to run. I could open it and whip it down, I am not sure that will work but i'm open to everything. Is there any diagnostic system that can tell me what is fired. I have done a hardware diagnostic but only the 20 min one. not the 2 hour scan. ANY recommendations will help. -Thanks
I have an A-Data brand 16 gig SDHC card which became corrupted/damaged in my Canon S90 (it looks like a lot of people are having problems with this card). When I put the card into the card reader attached to my Mac Pro, the volume does not show up on the desktop, or appear at all under Disk Utility. No error message of any kind pops up. If I look in Console, I see the following messages:

I have tried a variety of card recovery programs on my Mac, and on the Windows side booted under VMWare. But since the card is not mounting at all, none of these programs can see the card to try to recover anything. I really would like to recover these photos.
I have a G5 running Leopard that I have a 2nd hard drive on. It had b-tree node issues, but now Disk Warrior says "the directory cannot be rebuilt, original too severely damaged, error code 2156,-57. The volume wrapper is damaged and needs to be repaired." Disk Warrior doesn't seem to fix it, how I can get my data back?
Our family iBook G4 1.42 MHz was dropped from the arm of a chair onto the carpet (two feet) by one of our children. The display is shown in the picture. I've taken the LCD off and then replaced it thinking a cable might have come loose, but it didn't fix the problem. Does anyone have an opinion as to what is damaged? Is it the LCD? The circuit board in the display housing, or something in the main case? I've not taken the main case apart, but I will try that next.
My powerbook G4 aluminum was dropped about 18 inches. The display is now hosed. Thus far I have found *nothing* wrong with the laptop except for the internal display only shows gray horizontal lines with black snow/static intermixed (still in horizontal lines).
What I'm thinking is that the display is probably actually fine and there is some little logic board in the display casing that is bad.
Here is what I've proven:
1. external monitor still works fine (means vid card is fine?)
2. swapped internal displays with another powerbook and was fully functional (means it's something in my display casing or my display itself)
3. backlight works fine (on my munged display)
4. i can see movement in the grayness when i move the mouse pointer around almost like the pointer was as wide as the screen and 90% translucent (i.e. there is a horizontal shaded bar i can move up and down with the trackpad)
I've already thought about upgrading to the 1440x960 display and being done with it. But then I started thinking it is probably a $40-50 part if I could just narrow it down.... And that would be the smart thing, rather than spending $300+
