MacBook Pro :: Keep Wifi On/off For Shutdown?

Apr 4, 2012

i was wondering what the general consensus was for turning wifi on and off. i normally shut down my MBP during the night, and turn my wifi off as well.

is it worth to turn the wifi off at all, or can i just leave it on?

the reason i ask is because it would be nice to just power on and have it set up without taking the extra (5 seconds) to turn it on.

PowerPC :: Dual G5 Shutdown Randomly - PMU Forced Shutdown, Cause = -122

Sep 8, 2006

My system has randomly shut down twice now in the last two days. Dual G5 2.3. I checked the console log, which I know very little about, and it said this:

localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown, cause = -122

Two questions-

what's the -122 code mean?

Do you think resetting the PMU would be the solution to this?

MacBook Pro :: Wifi Reception Is Terrible / Constant Wifi Dropouts?

Apr 27, 2010

My 2010 15" MBP has constant Wifi dropouts, sometimes minutes at a time. Sometimes I have to reconnect. Yet it gets 4 bars. My MacBook never had these problems. It's generally slower, too. It's now useless for online video like Hulu. Anyone else seeing this? I wonder whether it's hardware (e.g. they moved the antenna, and/or because of the metal case) or software/drivers? I'm going to submit feedback after input from ya'll.

MacBook :: Will Old Titanium Running 10.3 Be Able To Connect To Wifi With A Usb Wifi Antenna?

Mar 7, 2012

I have a pretty old Titanium Mac Book that runs OS 10.3.9.  It's a moderately slow machine, but still works-  and although I realize that it won't be able to stream video or anything, I figure it would work for email, and basic web browsing-  But I'm wondering if it's going to be compatible with any new products such as a USB wifi antenna - because the room where I want to use it won't alow for an ethernet connection-   Also, will the old 10.3.9 OS allow me to connect wifi to the newer airport extreme base stations?

MacBook :: Won't Work With Wifi Network / Drops Wifi

Jan 10, 2011

MacBook. 2Ghz Intel Core Duo. OS Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I'm running a 2006 MacBook with Snow Leopard. A few months back it started dropping wifi connection. Airport would show no connection but would list my network along with others in my building. If I tried to connect with my WPA password it would just time out. At this time I was running Leopard.

Since then I've done a few things.Tried running the Netgear router with no encryption at all (same thing happens). Will lose connection and then time out trying to connect
I've tried the MacBook in a coffee shop with wifi access and at my parents (same NetGear router) and at my new apartment with a horrible Orange Livebox.
Taken the MacBook in to see the genius bar at Glasgow Apple store. Worked fine for them, but I explained it was intermittent but we could not force it to fail. I'm sure if it ran for an hour it would.
At present if I have the MacBook in the living room (where the Livebox router is situated) its fine and wont drop connection. If I walk some 5m to my bedroom it will work for approximately half and hour and then lose it. A few days ago I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and installed it last night. MacBook runs a hell of a lot faster (yay!) but moving it away from the router and its dead as disco in half an hour.

So to clarify, the MacBook has been tested on 4 wifi networks/ locus with same issue. iPhone, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have no issues with dropping connection no matter where they are in the apartment.

Apartment is a new build and its walls are not made out of lead or kryptonite. Is this a hardware issue rather than software? When updating to Snow Leopard it was an update to the existing OS of Leopard not a clean install.

AIRPORT says the following in System Profiler.

Software Versions:
Menu Extra:6.2.1 (621.1)
configd plug-in:6.2.3 (623.2)
System Profiler:6.0 (600.9)

OS X :: Macbook Pro Will Not Shutdown / Turn Off

Apr 28, 2008

I have a 15.4 in macbook pro, intel core 2 duo 2.2 GHz 2 Gb RAM 120 GB HD and I bought it almost a year ago. I purchased leopard for Christmas and installed it. I also bought a western digital 500 gb mybook to use with time machine. Since around that time, my computer sporadically will refuse to turn off. Everything will run as if it is going to turn off, and then the screen goes blank and the computer stalls and will not shut off. The num lock and caps lock keys do not light up by my lap fan keeps running. To turn it off I have to hold down the power button for five seconds. I already brought my laptop to the apple store and they sent it to wherever and it still has been doing this. I also ran a series of hardware resets that the tech line gave me.

MacBook Air :: When Is Core Shutdown Ok?

Jun 25, 2008

I have a MBA, and I do notice, more often than I had expected, that I'm experiencing core shutdown. I do agree with a previous post that it could, at least partially, be related to the video card/driver. If I decide to run a YouTube video while having Outlook open in VMWare Fusion, I'll usually shutdown a core. Other combinations of applications can do it too, but this combo is almost guaranteed.

My question is: Is there a time where core shutdown is good, for example, to preserve the integrity of the hardware? I don't want to go into the Genius bar complaining if all they're going to say is "Well look what you're running! Of course it'll shutdown!"

OS X :: MacBook Pro Shutdown While Booting?

Mar 6, 2010

So I have a MBP C2D from early 2007 that up until recently has been running fine. The battery died long ago, so I keep it plugged into the wall which was fine until yesterday. What started happening is my MBP would shut off completely (as if the battery died) and then when I try starting it back up, it would randomly shut off at some point during the boot process (not at one specific point; sometimes it barely makes it into OSX and other times it does not).

Anyone know what could be the problem? I have not installed anything new or changed any settings that could effect the system. To me it feels like the AC Adapter isn't giving the machine enough power, but I don't know for sure.

MacBook :: Is Okay To Repeatedly Shutdown / Restart

MacBook Air :: Getting Core Shutdown - Any Way To Confirm?

Jun 21, 2008

I think I am getting the well publicized core shutdown with my MBA but I can't be sure. I will be doing a task and things like expose will be as smooth as can be but then all of a sudden it slows to a complete halt, everything lags, expose is jerky, cmd+tab takes ages to switch application and keystrokes such as typing take seconds to appear. For a good 5+ mins the computer becomes totally useless. Is this what a core shutdown does to the computer? Is there an application I can use to monitor how many cores are running? I looked in the activity monitor but couldn't find information about how many cores are running. I have used smc control to monitor my cpu temp and I sometimes turn the exhaust up to max rpm before I watch a video or do something that has been causing the core shutdown (if thats what it is) in an attempt to try and keep the cpu cooler.

I have read about coolbook but I don't fancy paying for an application to stop a fault that shouldn't be happening. Are Apple fixing these faults? Is this a problem with ALL MacBook Airs? I ask this because there seem to be two groups of people. People that don't experience this (or say they don't, maybe don't want to admit a fault with there new shiny toy?) and people who have had 3-4 machines all with the same problem. I would love to know if this is indeed a core shutdown fault and if Apple replace it for me as it is becoming increasingly frustrating and not acceptable for a $1200 computer. Would also like to hear from people that have had the core shutdown fault fixed or replaced from Apple and if it has fixed the problem, or if it still exists.

It's been happening for a while now and I had hoped 10.5.3 would fix. When I choose to restart or shutdown, 90% of the time it hangs on grey screen after logging out and I have to hold down power button to shutdown. No apps hanging. Also have problem where when I open the cover to bring my MBA out of standby mode, I'll be presented with the logon screen. I'll type my password and my screen goes blank like it's gone back to sleep but the power light is fully lit. Have to close cover, wait till it goes on standby, then open cover to bring up password logon again. Should I reinstall OS X again?
