MacBook Air :: Using VMWare Fusion And CPU ShutdownApr 20, 2008
Anybody using VMWare Fusion with non-Windows guest OS? Just wondering if you are getting core shutdowns when the guest OS is running.

Anyone using their MBA with VMWare Fusion running Windows XP? If so, could you please tell me if your built-in iSight is working in Windows?View 6 Replies View Related
I do NOT have the superdrive and would like to install windows XP pro on my MBA with VMware Fusion. I've tried making .dmg, .iso, & .cdr images of the windows XP disc but i'm having NO luck with Fusion recognizing the disc image. When I create the new Virtual Machine I select "use disc image" and point to the appropriate disc image file. I keep getting a "no bootable device" error from fusion.
Can somebody who has successfully installed windows on an MBA without using a superdrive give me the step by step instructions you used...I'm getting pretty annoyed at this point.
Had been running my boot-camp Windows XP on my MBA using VMWare Fusion. A new version just got released, and I quickly upgraded.
After the upgrade, VM boot up takes for ever. Even after that, the performance is too poor. I tried uninstalling and re-installing VMWare tools, but the install doesn't complete.
I have a new wk 11 MBA 1.6/80g. I've been reading threads on CPU heat and core shutdown. I'm trying to decide whether I need to return my sys for an exchange. Other than heat/shutdown issues my MBA is awesome. Excellent fit and finish, no dead pixels, lid alignment is perfect, etc. When playing HD vid at full screen with my desktop background randomly changing at 5 sec intervals the vid stuttered some and I saw one of my cores intermittently shutting down. However, I learned to stop the stuttering by making my desktop background static. I was thrilled. I could overload the system with two vids playing simultaneously and watch my core temp go to 84/85C with some stuttering on the vids and some intermittent core shutdown. Finally the temp settled to mid 70's. However, I later noticed that I was having periodic core shutdown at 69C. This seems way low for a core to be shutting down.
Ambient temp for my room has consistently been 70F through all of my tests. As I type this message my core usage is very low, temp is 47C. My activity graph shows intermittent periods of both cores having no activity. How can the graph show no periodic activity on each core while I type this? I thought core shutdown was when the core shows no activity for some period of time. Perhaps periods of inactivity which really indicate core shutdown could be different as compared to very low demands on the CPU's? But, am I misreading core shutdown? Is my unit defective? Is excellent fit and finish/build quality the norm for MBA? I don't want to exchange and have dead pixels or a warped lid, etc. I would rather open the unit and mess with thermal paste but I can't see it correcting core shutdown at low temps under heavy load. I purchased this MBA on Saturday.
It's the last question before I buy the MBA. I have a program that can run under Win or MAC. That's a Picture convert and compile program work with my project. This program needs 100% CPU to and last 15 minutes to work under my old Pemtium M 1.6Ghz notebook. Usually I do my job use my notebook in home or my desktop PC in office. But occasionally I need to do some compile outside the office.
So I really need to know whether the MBA will definitely shutdown one core when the CPU usage is 100% and last 15 minutes? Or maybe you can tell me if the MBA will shutdown when rendering a project in Mayar or 3D Max last 15 minutes. It's important to me before I buy the MBA. I just need a light notebook and I can do some hard job occasionally, but reliable. I like a Fujisu S6510 too, but it is too expensive and heaver than MBA.
I am a new Mac user. I bought a used Mac with VMware Fusion installed so I could use QuickBooks. I no longer need to use QB. The Fusion is taking up too much of my hard drive. Would like to uninstall it.
Info:MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
I fire up VMware fusion to run Outlook 2007 -- I originally thought this was the greatest thing since sliced bread. What I've noticed, however, is the MBP gets noticeably warmer on the back left quadrant, and battery levels drop significantly. As soon as I close the VM, I can tell the machine cooling off and battery performance looks better. Is this just me or are other people noticing this? I do think the overall VMware fusion + outlook integration is awesome, but I think it might just have to hold out until Snow Leopard.View 3 Replies View Related
Am keen to get a 13" MacBook Pro, but not sure which spec to get. There is quite a price jump (250 GBP) between the basic spec and the high spec, and the only difference is the processor speed (2.66Hz vs 2.4GHz) and a larger HDD. Is the difference in performance really worth the price jump?
I want to run Windows XP via VMWare Fusion 3, specifically to run software for academic work, namely Windows MS Office 2007, Endnote, SPSS and GraphPad Prism. I will use Mac OS X for everything else, namely internet, email, iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie.
I installed Windows 7 beta in VMWare Fusion on my new aluminum macbook. It's pretty cool how seamlessly it works within the OS and spaces.
But what do you guys use your virtual machines for? How often do you have it open? What OS do you use?
I am tempted to purchase 2nd hand 13.3" MacBook Pro 2.26GHz, 2gb ram, 160gb hdd.
I have a need to run windows as a virtual machine for some occasional .NET development (which I am studying)
I have a couple of questions
What is the impact of battery life running a VM? I intended to run it in Unity mode and only have open .net tools such as visual web developer.
Also, does anybody know the performance of windows 7 in the new Fusion version? (What's aero like?)
Would the performance of an XP vm be better?
My MacBook Pro hangs a lot when I am browsing the net or even when running VMWare fusion. It has 4 GB RAM. I am using Mozilla firefox for browsing,
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)
So I am about 1 month away from buying a new MBP, and I was wondering what affect VMware fusion has on battery life.
I was also wondering if you could use all the multi-touch features of the touchpad while using a windows program.
In particular, I will be needing Microsoft Onenote.
Quick summary of questions:
1. How does running VMware fusion affect battery life.
I use VM Ware Fusion on my Mac Book Pro.When I start up an image with Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008R2, my cpu gets very hot.Temperature can go up to 90 degrees celsius for a brief moment, but usually i stays stable around 60 degrees celsius. I also use smFanControl, to make sure my fans are cooling a bit harder when I use VM Ware Fusion.
I have the next questions: Is the temparature rise normal? Can it harm my laptop (cpu)? Can smFancontrol damage my fans, while running harder for about 8 hours like that?Or is ther something wrong with my Mac, because during temerature rise to for instance 90 degrees, the cpu is used for like 30-40 percent?
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4), Harddisc has now tree partitions
It says that the drive has changed and I have to unmount and then remount it, but i don't really know how to do that and it doesn't seem to workView 4 Replies View Related
I did a search on these forums, but came up with nothing. I have two virtual machines set up with VMWare Fusion, one is my Boot Camp partition for Windows XP Professional, the other is Mandriva Linux. In both of these virtual machines, the internet doesn't work. I tried changing the network settings for VMWare Fusion to both NAT and bridged, and neither of them work. It's a little annoying because there's not too much you can do without an internet connection.View 16 Replies View Related
I'll like to install Mac OS 10.4.6 in VMWare Fusion for stuff that I need to use 10.4 in. How might I do that? I've noticed they support 10.5 and 10.6 server but why not client? and why not 10.4 intel?
I have the install disks with me, if I need to make an iso or cdr of it, I know how.
Does anyone know how to get Snow Leopard to work in VMware Fusion? When I go to make a new Virtual Machine I can't select the .dmg. I even tried to convert the .dmg to .img but that didnt make any difference.View 14 Replies View Related
Is it possible to use both Boot Camp and VMware Fusion to access a particular virtual Windows PC? And if so, which should I set up first?View 13 Replies View Related
I have VMware Fusion 2 and I want to transfer some mp3 files from my virtual machine, Windows XP to my Mac OS X.
I can't find any instruction regarding this in anywhere.
I have the Windows 7 RC .iso (it's 64bit, I should have that one, right? Macs are 64 bit not 32 bit?) file and I want to install it through my VMware fusion app. Please note, this is NOT the beta for Windows 7, it's the newer RC.
How in the world do I do this? Some online guides say to set it as Windows Server 2008 x64, others say Windows Vista 64.
Could someone take me through the process of installing it? Or link me to a video or proven article? Setup goes through usually but the next time I boot into Windows 7 it tells me there was an installation error and Windows could not find the startup disk.
Running Fusion on my 2+ year old MBP has become a near hopeless frustration. When I first got the machine, it ran pretty well, but it hasn't for quite awhile now. It tends to be sluggish to the point of uselessness. Currently, I'm doing a trial of Fusion 3. I'm a licensed owner of the prior versions.
I don't need it much, but when I do, I really need it. I gave up on using it with Windows 7, which is fine, XP will do. Once in awhile, I'll run it and all will be well. Other times, most of the time, it's unusable. I see no pattern to what makes it run well or not. Earlier today, I rebooted and started Fusion all by itself and didn't run anything else. Didn't help much.
Anyone had these problems and found a solution? I see lots of people with problems and plenty of others without. But not many who've bridged the gap.
I am going to the University of Georgia next year. I am buying a Mac, but I will need to run Windows for a test program called sofTest. According to UGA, sofTest does not work with VMware Fusion or Parallels, only Boot Camp. If I create a Boot Camp partition and install Fusion on that partition, can I still use Boot Camp when I need to?View 4 Replies View Related

I have a DVD for my physics class that only can be opened in Windows for whatever reason (I also have a game I want to use). OS X recognizes it, but when I boot into Windows 7 (RTM Build 7600) in VMware Fusion, I see no sign of it.
How do I open it?
Was just looking for some advice on which virtual machine you guys are finding works better on Snow Leopard.
I have Parallels 4, which I had on Leopard as well, with windows XP. Pn leopard it ran beautifully, however since upgrading I find its unbearably slow, and causes my whole system to slow down. I dont know if this is with parallels or with my system in general, as I have had a bit of trouble with Snow Leopard, though I believe I have sorted that out.
How have people found VMware to run in comparison to parallels? Is it worth switching?
I recently installed VMware fusion on my MBP, but I later noticed it to be slower.
I dedicated about 2GB of RAM to the Virtual Machine. The Windows 7 OS runs fine, but it's the Snow Leopard that became sluggish.
Do I need to change any settings on the Virtual Machine to make my SL run faster?
I really miss my fast SL!
Okay, so my friend lent me VMWare Fusion 2. And it works perfectly. But my mother, is concerned that it may receive Viruses. Is it likely that it will recieve viruses? I have a firewall and AVG Free Virus Protector on it.View 7 Replies View Related
I have a problem with my boot camp and vmware fusion. For some reason my internet won't work when I am on vmware but it works fine in boot camp. I look under hard ware manager and it says the ethernet controller isn't installed but i dont know where to find the driver for it. I've tried reinstalling vmware, deleting the virtual machine, uninstalling/reinstalling vmware tools and under setting Connected is checked and i have it set at NAT and have tried all the other options.View 2 Replies View Related

I have Windows 7 installed in VMWare fusion. Is there a way to directly boot from that installation into non-virtualized W7? Would bootcamp or something be able to read and boot from that installation?
I want to boot directly into W7 for gaming. The virtualized performance isn't really cutting it.
Hello, everybody. I just discovered this forum, having finally taken the plunge and bought a Mac Pro to replace an aging Dell PC. (My wife has had a MacBook Pro since early last year, which is what convinced me to switch.)
My main use for the new machine will be photo processing, including astrophotography. I will obviously be able to use Photoshop natively, but will have to use Windows for one or two astro packages (and also for occasional use of an old Windows version of Mathematica).
So, my questions:
Am I right to think that it is possible to install Windows with Boot Camp and then also use the same Windows install under Fusion? If so, is there anything special that needs to be done when first doing the Boot Camp install?
URL watch?v=j-GQQ5a5Tbg Not much of a big deal at all, but I'm wondering if it's only me.View 6 Replies View Related
