View 6 RepliesI am the first person to think of this idea and publish it on the Internet time-stamped. Please use freely. I have an idea for the Macbook Pro keyboard. Make the sides of the macbook pro keys transparent acrylic black so that no hairs or dust can fall under there and let the light shine through the black transparent acrylic to create the same backlit keyboard effect.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI own Warcraft 3 TFT and use a Macbook Pro 13.3" which does not have a numpad. A numpad is very useful for Warcraft 3 TFT and would like to somehow simulate one, since I don't have a full keyboard. I was wanting to know what my options are for doing that. I downloaded KeyRemap4Macbook, but I did not see an option to for what I want. I would like to be able to have 1-0 be recognized in warcraft as numkeys without it affecting outside of game. What I was hoping is if I could turn ~ key into like a Caps Lock. So like if I press Shift+~ it changes 1-0 keys at top to a numpad and if I press it again it changes them back to normal function. Or if I could just bypass all that and just have them recognized as numbers when I type in the game and numpad when I do not have chat dialog box open.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have spent some time modifying the apple aluminum keyboard firmware in order to make it function as I wanted in Windows.
What I have achieved until now:
a) I am using the eject button as a sleep button (this also works in windows)
b) Swap alt and cmd buttons
There are no extra drivers/utilities involved. Everything is stored in the apple keyboard firmware and works even without bootcamp software.
If there are others interested, please post and I will make a tutorial.
This is primarily for users interested in using their aluminum keyboard on a windows PC
There is no cd in the drive but my MacBook makes a noise like it's trying to eject a cd after waking from sleep mode.

I am still a little new to OS X. I have had a couple older macs to get me transitioned over and now I am using one full time. But there are a few shortcuts that I love for windows and I would like to know if the equivalent is available on my mac.
1. When I highlight something on my vista machine in a browser and click search in Google it opens in a new tab. Is this possible on my mac. I have not tried Firefox on it and that is what I use in windows, but does it work there or is there a way to get it to open in a new tab in safari?
2. When I click a link on my windows machine in my e-mail it opens in a new tab and not another window. Can i make this happen on my mac in Safari?
3. Last one. On my windows machine I hit control enter after typing the address in the address bar and it throws in the www. and the .com/.net Is there a replacement shortcut in OS X?
My MBP has this issue every once in a while where I have to hold the power button and force shut down. Randomly the volume keys/brightness etc. stop working and i can't open apps or shut it down normally. Everything still works though (can still function in open applications) Anyone know what the problem is? It fixes when I force reset.

Any other tips on saving battery other than the obvious like turning the brightness down etc.
When logging out my I Mac often dont react. It will stay open, or it will sometimes react as it sleep. When I open the Mac again the screen is still warm.

View 4 Replies View RelatedUp until now, I have used my laptop for personal use and some photo work.
NOW I will be using it for my business that works with credit card #'s AND social security numbers. Very sensitive data. What I am basically doing is pulling information from a website database off the site and saving onto the computer.
My friend who works in IT security is basically telling me to dump the laptop for a desktop. That even if I store the information off the laptop that because it passes through the machine that the information can be accessed somehow. I have never heard of that but then again I don't deal in IT security. Is that true?
is there just a quick program that can make a picture turn black n white. im not looking for a program ...thx
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install some software, however, every time I try to do the "make" command on a Makefile, I get the following error: -bash: make: command not found. The manual page does not exists either. I have no idea why the "make" command doesn't exists. I might have added a missing command in the past, but I don't remember. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.7. Can anyone guess what the problem is?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am doing a project in which I'm circulating some sensitive material via PDF files. Ideally, I'd love it if the PDF file could expire so that the sensitive material wasn't hanging out on people's computers forever. (the material isn't life or death sensitive-- but it would be great if we could limit the time that it existed "out there")..
I looked into solutions that create PDF files that expire-- but the functionality is expensive ($3000) and requires users download an Acrobat plugin-- which is too cumbersome for the scientists that need to see these PDFs--- any sort of expiration/security/DRM we impose on the files needs to be 100% transparent.
Does anyone know of an inexpensive way to do this with PDF files? (I have a feeling it might not be possible)--or not easily possible for someone without programming expertise like me--- BUT-- on the other hand....
Can anyone suggest another way to distribute documents that would expire?-- someone suggested using Flash or web delivery of some sort? Anyone have ideas on that front? The situation is that we're creating documents that are 40 to 150 pages in length, and have bookmarks for sections in the document-- so if we went to a Flash or Web delivery type of method.. it would have to be quite simple to go from PDF to this format--- and the medium would have to be printable and viewable when not connected to the internet.
I've been using itunes for a while and it just messed my entire music library up! I've found something that is more Winamp style for me named "Cog". Now my problem is that I want to control it with the F7, F8, F9 keys which are the rewind, play and forward keys, but when pressing any of them it works both on itunes and cog player. How can I disable the Itunes link to it? I want it to control only Cog player.

I leave my Air on pretty much all the time, and put it to sleep while moving around etc. Sleeping it disconnect the Airport connection - which if very annoying. At a desk I've just been dimming the display all the way off in order to keep my connection.
However, I recently noticed that by setting a "sleep display" hot corner, my network connection is maintained.
I have 2 questions:
1) Is sleep display equivalent (functionally) to simply dimming the display all the way down?
2) Is there a way to either set up a shortcut to sleep the display (other than a hot corner) and/or set it so that only the DISPLAY sleeps after 'x' minutes?
I set the MBP to sleep in 10 min through the Energy Saver pref with the option to sleep the hdds. When it's about to sleep the screen dims, then turns black, then the sleep light comes on but does not blink no matter how long I leave it. The blinking only happens when I close the lid or when I select the Sleep option under the Apple logo. Is that normal behavior?

I have torrents going all the time. If the computer goes to sleep, the internet disconnects, so they stop. Display sleep wouldn't disconnect though. Is it OK to have computer sleep on "never" but keep display on "15 minutes"? I don't usually even leave the computer on overnight.
