OS X V10.7 Lion :: Create A Virtualbox Bootable Image File From A Bootable Usb Flash Drive
Jun 1, 2012I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.
I tried converting it in the terminal with:
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.
I tried the terminal command:
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

Jan 22, 2010I used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable backup of my internal hard drive. I was wondering how you initiate the bootable backup if I do have an internal hard drive failure? Do I just plug the drive in and power the computer on? Are there any other steps/precautions I should consider.

I have tried / boot from DVD, then go to Disk Utility, file/ create new image from disk but the process stops imediatlly with a. cant unmount drive, b. drive is busy, c. in use how the drive is in use is not sensable, as it should be as 'just a drive' This is on a laptop with OSX 10.5.8 / 32gig hd, 2 gig ram, just in case it matters. Sep 10, 2009Apparently, there are two ways to convert disk images in CDR format to ISO format:
1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso
Or
2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr
The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.

On a different external hard drive (2), I have a disk image of my macintosh HD (the computer's original hard drive with all my data on it) How do I go about restoring from the disk image on the external drive(2) to external hard drive (1)?
I want to be able to boot from the external hard drive (1) and have all my data that I backed up as a disk image on external hard drive (2)

Sep 6, 2009I just purchased the SN 10.6 family pack and would like to make a backup of the Install DVD. I have several MACs in the family and want to make sure I have an extra disk in case something happens to the original. I have Toast Titanium and I believe I can make a copy of the disk. Will this be an exact copy and will it be bootable from the DVD drive on my iMac? Are there any special settings in Toast that I have to use.? I only recently purchased Toast and am not too familiar with it at this point.

Both are formatted Max OS Extended (Journaled)So, what am I doing wrong?Also, what advantages, if any, are there in using CCC or SD instead of the free DU?

Feb 21, 2009I'm currently trying to burn a bootable image file using OS X 10.3.9's Disk Utility software. I have an external DVD Burner connected to a G4 Cube via Firewire. The issue is that when I select "burn" from the menu and point to the respective .dmg file, Disk Utility does not recognise the attached DVD burner. The burner is however recognised in Toast (which I also have installed).What might the issue be? I have searched high and low on the net in an attempt to diagnose the issue to no avail. Is there an alternative solution to burning bootable disks in 10.3.9?

Nov 17, 2009I want to partition my hard drive so I can run BootCamp, and my PowerBook is giving me the following message: The Disk Cannot be Partitioned because Some Files Cannot be Moved. So I'm assuming I need to format the whole thing and then partition with BootCamp. Totally open to other ideas, but, assuming I move forward with that, is the best was to save user settings, current Applications, data stored on the drive, etc. to create a disk image on an external drive? I've done that, but I'm sort of unclear on what I do with the disk image after I've wiped the drive and partitioned it up.

When your on disk utility you have the hard drive type then "macintosh HD under it.
When i click the hard drive it shows i have 91 GB remaining on it
When i click macintosh HD it shows its only a 200GB hd when its a 250 and only has 69 gb free?

Sep 29, 2009When I eventually upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'd ideally like to do a fresh install (I did Tiger>Leopard as an upgrade install), but I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps afterwards. So, would the following work as a best-of-both-worlds alternative?
1. Update my backup bootable system drive image on my external FW drive
2. Wipe the drive in my MBP and do a fresh install of SL
3. Use the Migration Assistant to automagically copy all my data and apps over from the backup drive as if I was upgrading from an old Mac to a new one
On paper at least, it looks like it ought to "just work"... but I'm wondering whether or not Migration Assistant will work between a Mac and an external drive, or does it have to be between two actual Macs?

Jan 7, 2010I have an '05 mac mini (pre-intel chip) with OS X 10.4 that while trying to transfer a file to an external hard drive gave me a blue screen (that wouldn't go away). After a hard shut down, I get to the apple and spinning wheel but nothing else happens.
My goal is to get to my files on the mini and put them on an external drive (specifically my itunes folder)
Is there some other way to repair this? I have 17 GB left on the main hard drive. Could I partition it and create a new bootable drive without wiping out the data in the original drive?

May 24, 2012Yesterday I installed a new keyboard, additional RAM, and a new larger hard drive. I have a 17" Macbook Pro. The new hard drive is a Seagate 750gb 7200rpm drive. Prior to swapping the drive out, I used Time Machine to backup my old drive, and it's backed up to an external drive. After doing the hard drive install, I formatted the drive and partitioned it 150gb and 600gb (approximately). I was running OSX10.5.8. When I plugged in the external drive to boot, it worked fine. How do I get the OS onto the new partition? The original OSX disc doesn't recognize or even offer as an option the new drive.

Intel Mac :: Disk Utility Can't Repair HD - Possible To Create New Image To Backup?
Jun 7, 2012Two days ago my computer died and I haven't been able to get past the Apple screen since. I've tried starting in Safe mode, etc. that did not work. I just started up using my installation disk and got into Disk Utility. It says it cannot repair the disk and that I should back up as many files as possible and reformat the disk. How am I supposed to back up if I can't start up? I am currently creating a new image of the HD to an external drive but my question is if Disk Utility couldn't repair the disk, with the external drive copy also be problematic? How can I tell before I reformat the whole thing and start over?

Jun 27, 2014I have a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus Drive which was working perfectly fine until I plugged it into a USB hub. It detected it while in the hub and I was able to get files off of it, but when I ejected it from the hub and put it back into the USB slot on the computer it was not detected by finder. It shows up in the disk utility and I clicked verify and repair and it says:
Verify and Repair volume “Seagate Backup Plus Drive”
Checking file system
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Is there any way to get this to work properly again? Or if not is there a way for me to recover my files on the external hard drive?

Feb 1, 2012I want to create a disk image of a Mac drive (.dmg file).I figured that it might not be a good idea to try and image a live disk, so I unmounted it (the user dragged the disk icon to the eject icon), and I confirmed it was unmounted by looking at /Volumes. To be clear here, this isn't the boot volume, that is /dev/disk0./dev/disk1 is an internal drive - as it happens it's the original drive for this OSX 10.4 G5, AND /Volumes/HITACHI is the mount point for an external USB drive.I have tried this twice.On both occassions, things seemed to go well, but after a few minutes (about 10 - 20 minutes), I observed that the target file on /Volumes/HITACHI stopped growing, then a bunch of unpleasant stuff started to happen:
* I did lsof /Volumes/HITACHI/MacHD_20120201.dmg and found the PID of the diskimage binary, ps waux showed it was doing nothing (CPU% was 0.0). This indicates a stuck process to me.
* The hdutil command stopped producing '.'
* I could not cancel the hduitl command
* I could not rm the MacHD_20120201.dmg file
* I could not ls the /Volumes/HITACHI directory
* unlink also hung
A little further into this, the Mac became unresponsive. I observed that the disk was now mounted again (grrr!). As a work around I switched the USB drive off and on, and Mac came good - all my terminals started to respond, the GUI responded for the user.My workaround has been to use CCC to make a clone of the disk - but I don't like this because I think .dmg files are much more convenient (for a start, now that I've used CCC I can't use the USB drive for anything else).
* Is my methodology wrong? Do I really need to umount the /dev/disk1
* Can you disable finder from automounting an internal hard drive (I am particularly interested in this)

Aug 22, 2009I just switched out my 160GB hard drive on my 13" MBP for a 500GB. I do notice that things are a little slower now as far as opening up apps and such. Would upgrading to the 4GB of RAM instead of the 2 I have make a difference or is that the trade i get for running a 5200 500GB HD.

(I do believe I still have available to me the option of the cd to be shipped, but I'm not sure) Now I need to use it in a way that requires it to be booted off a cd... The software downloaded was in a disk image format. Are there any specific instructions/steps I need to take in order to ensure that I produce a bootable cd? I'd hate to waste a perfectly good CD-R by a stupid mistake of making it non-bootable.

Upon first purchasing Leopard 10.5 way back when it came out, I decided to back up the disk on my computer by creating a Disk Image. Turns out it was a good move because now that I need the disc, it seems to have picked up a big scratch on it's surface, and it simply refuses to mount at this point...
I can use either Toast or Disk Utility to accomplish this task (or the terminal if absolutely necessary, but I would really prefer using one of the GUIs I've just mentioned). I was hoping someone would be gracious enough to provide me with instructions on what would be the best way to create a bootable DVD from this DMG file.
