Intel Mac :: Disk Utility Can't Repair HD - Possible To Create New Image To Backup?
Jun 7, 2012Two days ago my computer died and I haven't been able to get past the Apple screen since. I've tried starting in Safe mode, etc. that did not work. I just started up using my installation disk and got into Disk Utility. It says it cannot repair the disk and that I should back up as many files as possible and reformat the disk. How am I supposed to back up if I can't start up? I am currently creating a new image of the HD to an external drive but my question is if Disk Utility couldn't repair the disk, with the external drive copy also be problematic? How can I tell before I reformat the whole thing and start over?

OS X :: Create Disk Image Password Protected Folder?
Feb 12, 2010I created a password protected folder in Snow Leopard. I created a new blank disk image with 128-bit encryption. Now I can mount the image, enter my password and: Access to secret files!
Question: I selected the disk image and deleted it. A password was not necessary...is this true? Can anyone just delete the disk image without entering a password?

Apr 14, 2012Does anyone know if it is possible to create a disk image of the boot drive? I have tried / boot from DVD, then go to Disk Utility, file/ create new image from disk but the process stops imediatlly with a. cant unmount drive, b. drive is busy, c. in use how the drive is in use is not sensable, as it should be as 'just a drive' This is on a laptop with OSX 10.5.8 / 32gig hd, 2 gig ram, just in case it matters. I thought about timemachine, but the laptop sometimes requires a complete reinstall, that is a long process, install + upgrade + redo all the other programs + Â

Nov 10, 2007I'm trying to restore an old Hard Drive image OS.dmg to a usb hard drive that I have. I'm using the command: dd if=/Users/Shared/OS.dmg of=/dev/disk5 bs=1m. And I'm getting, dd: /dev/disk5: Resource busy. What would cause this error? I'm not sure why it's "busy". I get the exact same thing when I try to do it in Disk Utility.

Feb 18, 2012I am trying to create a new image .. and my hard drive is not listed on the left hand panel .. the other night it worked fine except it would keep locking up so i did a disc repair and then restarted when i did a restart to prepare for a fresh install i noticed my hard drive was no longer in the disc utlitity not sure why that is.. Now the Snow leopard disc is stuck in the drive and I am unable to eject the disc tried almost every ejection command there is nothing .. isnt there a way to mount the hard drive through the terminal?

Jan 6, 2009for the past month or so my automated backups with time machine/time capsule have not been working. Every so often the following error message pops up:
"the backup disk image could not be mounted"
in troubleshooting, i have tried to mount the sparsebundle image directly but without success. from reading around a bit i can see that others have had this problem, and that one solution is to delete the sparsebundles and start again.
but that of course means losing all my archived backups, which i would rather avoid.
OS X V10.7 Lion :: Unable To Mount Disk Image
Feb 28, 2012Yesterday I downloaded and installed Lion. After a while I tried to open one of the disk images that I have stored on the harddrive, which worked to mount prior to installing Lion. While attempting to open it, the process fails and gives the error "no mountable filesystems". I have searched for the error on the internet, and there does not seem to excist a solution to it. However, all the people with the same error, whcih did not have a solution, did not seem to have a similiar problems. Their problem lied with not being able to access disk images downloaded from the internet, while my disk image already excised on the hard drive before installing lion.
Many of the files and documents on the disk image are irreplaceable to me. I can not stress how important it is for me to recover them. If I am not able to do so, it will result in a massive economic loss.

Aug 7, 2009All of a sudden my computer (imac, 10.4.11) won't let me open images downloaded from digital cameras (I've tried several - so it's not the cameras). I get the following error - "Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize." Also the same basic error when using Photoshop and Fireworks. I can open files still on the camera, or saved to a CD - just not anything dragged to the desktop. I can still open pictures which had been previously saved - but nothing new. I ran the Repair Disk utility, which found and apparently fixed an Illegal Name error on the hard drive, but the problem still persists.

Nov 19, 2009I have a Mac Mini and on the internal drive I have Snow Leopard installed on the first partition and I'd like to install Snow Leopard Server on the same drive on another partition (I'm new to Mac, this is my only machine and my only drive, and this is only for testing purposes, so don't bother with stupid questions about why etc).
The problem I have is that I can't seem to create the necessary partition in Disk Utility. I have shrinken the Snow Leopard partition to get some free space and I've created a second partition for Server but for some reason I can't choose the options button to select GUID. The button is grayed out, see attached image.
What am I doing wrong? Or is it not possible to have two OS partitions on the same internal drive?

Nov 11, 2010I recently made a clone of my Windows XP Pro SP3 installation (its roughly about 14GB according to Finder/WinClone) so i made a 80GB partition on my 320GB drive and it gives me this error message:
the WinClone came from a 500GB internal drive and ive gotten winclone images to restore to a MBP before but not sure why its giving me this error code, anyway to restore the image to the new partition (which was created with Bootcamp) as i no longer have access to the old machine it was running on.
OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Disk Image .DMG Unable To Mount / Attach - Not Recognized?
Jul 3, 2012After a fatal mac crash (PPC 10.5) i had no option but to reinstall the OS (10.5), i obviously didnt reformat the drive in the hope that i would be able to recover some if not all of my data. Using various tools i was happily able to recover most of my data successfully, including 3 AES encrypted Disk images of around 30GB in size each.
I didn't hold out much hope for actually recovering the data inside the dmgs, although after some fiddling i was able to recover 2 of them fully after receiving the no mountable file system error, i dont know how i done it but nonetheless i dont appear to have lost any data from those two dmgs whatsoever. Now the third dmg (also about 30GB in size) never gave me the no mountable file system error and instead returns the error: unable to mount: not recognized. Im pretty sure that my data is still there somewhere due to the sheer size of the recovered file, tied with the fact of the success of the recovery of the other 2 disk images. I have read every post i could find on this site and have trawled the web tirelessly looking for a solution to this, but have yet to find anything that even comes close - the closest i have found was a post on this forum where it would appear an apple engineer was able to recover most of the data using some sort of magic.
I am not in a position to pay for professional data recovery and besides i would love to see a solution to this problem appear somewhere on the web. I have tried the usual, rebuilding permissions, mounting on another machine (imac G5), resizing with disk util, repairing with disk warrior, converting to ISO - all which return the same error - not recognized! I have tried every terminal command i have found on the web, although decyphering some of the information is a little out of my remit and my knowledge of HEX is limited. I haven't yet tried Toast, basically because i dont have a copy, but it would be my guess that this would return a similar result. Incidentally when i recovered the original data, there were some small (what appeared to be dmgs) files around only maybe a few Kb each with part of the file names of the original files, i'm guessing these maybe the headers or something like that? although i didn't have to do anything with them to get the other 2 disk images working again.

Feb 1, 2012I want to create a disk image of a Mac drive (.dmg file).I figured that it might not be a good idea to try and image a live disk, so I unmounted it (the user dragged the disk icon to the eject icon), and I confirmed it was unmounted by looking at /Volumes. To be clear here, this isn't the boot volume, that is /dev/disk0./dev/disk1 is an internal drive - as it happens it's the original drive for this OSX 10.4 G5, AND /Volumes/HITACHI is the mount point for an external USB drive.I have tried this twice.On both occassions, things seemed to go well, but after a few minutes (about 10 - 20 minutes), I observed that the target file on /Volumes/HITACHI stopped growing, then a bunch of unpleasant stuff started to happen:
* I did lsof /Volumes/HITACHI/MacHD_20120201.dmg and found the PID of the diskimage binary, ps waux showed it was doing nothing (CPU% was 0.0). This indicates a stuck process to me.
* The hdutil command stopped producing '.'
* I could not cancel the hduitl command
* I could not rm the MacHD_20120201.dmg file
* I could not ls the /Volumes/HITACHI directory
* unlink also hung
A little further into this, the Mac became unresponsive. I observed that the disk was now mounted again (grrr!). As a work around I switched the USB drive off and on, and Mac came good - all my terminals started to respond, the GUI responded for the user.My workaround has been to use CCC to make a clone of the disk - but I don't like this because I think .dmg files are much more convenient (for a start, now that I've used CCC I can't use the USB drive for anything else).
* Is my methodology wrong? Do I really need to umount the /dev/disk1
* Can you disable finder from automounting an internal hard drive (I am particularly interested in this)Â

Mar 15, 2010In doing a fresh install of OS X Tiger on my emac, can it be done by a disk image of Tiger or do I have to use the CDs? Reason being the CD thingy is not working.
Or, do I have to sacrifice the fresh install and use a USB Drive to upgrade it?

Sep 28, 2009I'm doing a fresh install of Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro. This will include a bunch of my major software.
I'm planning to make a disk image of the computer once I'm done so I don't have to reinstall everything when i want to do a big cleanup again.
Could I use this image on my intel iMac? or is the OS installation customized to that computer (different hardware etc), rendering it useless on another computer?

1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso
Or
2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr
The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.
IMac :: Sometimes Unresponsive - Busy Beachball Popping Up
Sep 13, 2010Our 1.5 year old iMac (20" iMac, 2.4GHz Core 2 duo, otherwise known as "iMac 8.1") has started to act really strange: the busy "beachball" popping up all the time, things lagging behind or being very unresponsive (e.g. I might access an application's menu or press a window button and won't get any response until a minute later). Booting is also an issue: often times the white screen which appears with the startup chime stays there forever with that spinning circle. Other times all seems well and the Finder desktop with the dock appears, but the Finder menu bar never shows up (or appears 20 minutes later!). I've also had instances when a large folder icon with a question mark on it appears right after the startup chime (I take it this means that a bootable drive isn't found or isn't working).
Strangely there are instances when everything works as it should. But something is obviously wrong with it. So what else have I tried in order to rectify or indicate where the problem lies:
- reinstalled MacOSX from the DVD while keeping the user data
- reinstalled MacOSX from the DVD, completely erasing the internal hard drive first (I've back up my user files on an external Time Machine hard drive)
- run "Apple hardware test" from the MacOSX installation DVD. No indications of damaged RAM.
- removed the 4GB memory upgrade (two 2GB DIMMs) and replaced it with the 1GB DIMM that came with the iMac when we bought it
- ran "Disk utility", checking the drive for errors, SMART status and permission issues
- booted into Safe mode (CMD-S while booting), then entering: applejack AUTO restart to do a deep fix/check of the drive
- done several PRAM resets (CMD-ALT-P-R while booting up, a couple of times after each other, repeating the startup chime)

Jun 8, 2012Here on my office we have 3 macs, 1 wireless router and 1 gigabit lan switch.My wireless router only have 100mbps ports and I need a little more speed on my network.So I want to use my wireless router only as internet via Airport and my gigabit lan as file sharing via gigabit connection. I can disable the network features on my wireless router so the macs can't see each other on the wireless connection.The problem is that i can't make them work on the gigabit switch. I need to put some static ips on the macs and I don't know what to put on the default gateway because the gigabit switch doesn't have an IP, its a SWITCH 08P 10/100/1000 D-LINK DGS-1008D. what ips and gateways should I put on my network connection? PS: I tried putting my wireless router via cable on my gigabit switch but it limited my gigabit switch to 100mbps and started to slow my network traffic. Â

Mar 7, 2012I have let it run 24 hours and still would not restart. The only way i can shut it off is holding down power button. Its a pain to have to do this any time the imac needs to restart. The screen just shows the swirling wait circle and nothing ever happens.

Anything else I can try? I am using a Seagate external HD with a connection through my router. I spent an hour on the phone with seagate and everything is ok on the HD end. May 1, 2008I was a PC user who recently moved to mac. I have a macbook (intel 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD). When I was using PC, I backed up all my data to a network storage device (Buffalo LinkStation 250 GB connected to a 802.11g netgear router which is supplied by Sky) using a program called SmartSync Pro, which worked very well. Although I can connect to and mount the Share folder on this drive when the macbook is connected to the network, Time Machine will not back up to it. It wouldnt even recognise the disk on the network.
So I went onto the trusty internet, and found that you can get time machine to recognise the Share folder. (This was obtained from: http://blog.imulus.com/george/software/using-leopard-time-machine-to-backup-of-a-network/)See my comment on their page at the bottom, number 66.
It recommended entering the following in to the Terminal: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Before attempting backup I have to go into "Network" and select the Share folder by double clicking on it. This seems to mount the volume. After this, it can be seen in Time Machine as a potential backup destination.
However, this method does not work for me. Time Machine "prepares" for a while, then gives the following message: Time Machine error. The backup disk image could not be created.
More internet searching took me to macosxhints which suggests creating something called a sparsebundle image on my local system. (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080420211034137) Have not tried this yet as I thought it would be prudent to seek some help first.
Apple have deliberately disabled the ability for Time Machine to back up to network attached storage, (except of course to their proprietory Time Capsule):
Is this because time machine requires a network faster than 802.11g?
Is this because a time machine backup to a network attached storage device is unreliable and the data is corrupted?
I dont want to shell out more cash for a time capsule. I would prefer not to have to hardwire to an external drive (which I will also have to go out and buy). Any thoughts?
