I created a password protected folder in Snow Leopard. I created a new blank disk image with 128-bit encryption. Now I can mount the image, enter my password and: Access to secret files!
Question: I selected the disk image and deleted it. A password was not necessary...is this true? Can anyone just delete the disk image without entering a password?
I've done all of this and it won't open. I double click on it, the default program to open it is diskimagemounter and nothing happens when I double click.(Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4)

View 1 Replies View RelatedTwo days ago my computer died and I haven't been able to get past the Apple screen since. I've tried starting in Safe mode, etc. that did not work. I just started up using my installation disk and got into Disk Utility. It says it cannot repair the disk and that I should back up as many files as possible and reformat the disk. How am I supposed to back up if I can't start up? I am currently creating a new image of the HD to an external drive but my question is if Disk Utility couldn't repair the disk, with the external drive copy also be problematic? How can I tell before I reformat the whole thing and start over?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI go into System Preferences->Dektop & Screen Saver. As the program "loads" availabe image sources and such I get a pop-up requesting a password to my secure disk image. Yes, I have a secure disk image in my home directory. Yes, the secure disk image is currently "locked" (Not mounted in finder).Â
I click cancel (a few times, probably 2 maybe 3 times) and things continue along fine. I select a photo source that I want for a screen save and exit peferences. I then go an start the screen saver (I'm using Hot-Corners). I get the message "Looking for pictures....." for , well...basically forever...Â
Sure enough I touch the mouse to leave my screen saver and there is the pop-up again. Asking for me to unlock my secure disk image.Â
I thought this might be related to Spotlight. I tried reading several threads and have gone as far as taking my entire hard-drive/volume and putting it into the "Privacy" tab under spotlight.Â
how I might get it so the "Desktop & Screen Saver" stop prompting me to unlock my secure disk image? (WITHOUT having to make sure the disk image is unlocked before I sleep my screen or open the screen saver utlity) As always, I am only speculating that this is Spotlight related so that could be a red-herring....Â

View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to create a disk image of a Mac drive (.dmg file).I figured that it might not be a good idea to try and image a live disk, so I unmounted it (the user dragged the disk icon to the eject icon), and I confirmed it was unmounted by looking at /Volumes. To be clear here, this isn't the boot volume, that is /dev/disk0./dev/disk1 is an internal drive - as it happens it's the original drive for this OSX 10.4 G5, AND /Volumes/HITACHI is the mount point for an external USB drive.I have tried this twice.On both occassions, things seemed to go well, but after a few minutes (about 10 - 20 minutes), I observed that the target file on /Volumes/HITACHI stopped growing, then a bunch of unpleasant stuff started to happen:
* I did lsof /Volumes/HITACHI/MacHD_20120201.dmg and found the PID of the diskimage binary, ps waux showed it was doing nothing (CPU% was 0.0). This indicates a stuck process to me.
* The hdutil command stopped producing '.'
* I could not cancel the hduitl command
* I could not rm the MacHD_20120201.dmg file
* I could not ls the /Volumes/HITACHI directory
* unlink also hung
A little further into this, the Mac became unresponsive. I observed that the disk was now mounted again (grrr!). As a work around I switched the USB drive off and on, and Mac came good - all my terminals started to respond, the GUI responded for the user.My workaround has been to use CCC to make a clone of the disk - but I don't like this because I think .dmg files are much more convenient (for a start, now that I've used CCC I can't use the USB drive for anything else).
* Is my methodology wrong? Do I really need to umount the /dev/disk1
* Can you disable finder from automounting an internal hard drive (I am particularly interested in this)Â

I figured out that using disk utility is the best method to create a password protected and hidden folder, but i can't seem to find clear instructions on how to do this. I'd like to be able to have a folder that's password protected and hidden if possible. I'd also like to be able to add files and delete files from that folder in the future as well.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased my first Mac Book Pro. I generally have content on my laptop which I would like to keep password protected. I use Disk Utility and create a new .dmg file, encrypt it and then password protect it. It will make a new virtual drive in which i can add my files, folders etc. and once ejected, it can't be accessed without entering the password. All was good, untill i realised that I cant delete that Virtual Drive ever. As in. if i just delete the .dmg file from finder, then that file is deleted but at the same time that space from the hard disk is lost. I can't recover it. I tried erasing the disk from the Disk Utility, but it kept recreating it. Â
I made a new virtual disk on my external hard disk and then moved the .dmg to the trash, but the 3 GB that i had used to create that Virtual Disk was gone and absent. It still shows free space as watever -3GB. What did i do wrong? what is the right way to delete those virtual drives.

I have used Disk Utility to attempt to password protect a folder but its not working for me. I go to FILE>NEW>DISK IMAGE FROM FOLDER I then highlight the folder I want to password protect and click the IMAGE button.In the window that pops up, I then select 128 bit encryption and leave image format on COMPRESSED.Then I enter and verify the password I want to place on the folder and hit OK.The resulting disk image appears to have been modified, but when I double click on the supposedly password secured folder, nothing happens. The folder doesn't open, nor does a window pop up asking for a password.I'm running snow leopard.Â

1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso
Or
2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr
The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.
