View 5 RepliesI finally get to open my first iMac in a few days and the excitement is killing me. So I decided to sign up for one of the workshops at the local Apple store. The girl told the group that Time Machine would make a perfect mirrored image of the hard drive in case of catastrophic failure. I asked her if this image was a boot-able clone and she said yes.

1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso
Or
2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr
The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.
I'm currently trying to burn a bootable image file using OS X 10.3.9's Disk Utility software. I have an external DVD Burner connected to a G4 Cube via Firewire. The issue is that when I select "burn" from the menu and point to the respective .dmg file, Disk Utility does not recognise the attached DVD burner. The burner is however recognised in Toast (which I also have installed). What might the issue be? I have searched high and low on the net in an attempt to diagnose the issue to no avail. Is there an alternative solution to burning bootable disks in 10.3.9?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.Â
I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.Â
I tried converting it in the terminal with:Â
hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmgÂ
but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.Â
I tried the terminal command:Â
dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.isoÂ
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.Â
I tried the terminal command:Â
cat /dev/disk4 > windows8.isoÂ
but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.Â

When I eventually upgrade to Snow Leopard, I'd ideally like to do a fresh install (I did Tiger>Leopard as an upgrade install), but I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all my apps afterwards. So, would the following work as a best-of-both-worlds alternative?
1. Update my backup bootable system drive image on my external FW drive
2. Wipe the drive in my MBP and do a fresh install of SL
3. Use the Migration Assistant to automagically copy all my data and apps over from the backup drive as if I was upgrading from an old Mac to a new one
On paper at least, it looks like it ought to "just work"... but I'm wondering whether or not Migration Assistant will work between a Mac and an external drive, or does it have to be between two actual Macs?
I've been wondering if there's an application for Mac OSX [ Or even Windows ] where you can build iPhone Applications with drag and drop or kind of WYSIWYG. Something easy and not hard.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-Zs7, & I am reading about it's video formats. It shoots AVCHD lite movies and motion jpg movies. I would like to be able to burn these raw movie files unedited to blank DVDs, so my family can view them right away, in the excitement of filming, they are eager to see the results. They do not like to wait for me to do the complex & tedious process of video editing with titles etc, to play. Being able to just burn the raw files for immediate viewing relives me of the burden of complex video editing, of which I do not enjoy very much, & makes family happy, to get the video out of the camera to the DVD player & TV. We have a Philips DVD player that says it can play Divx movies, & an analog tube TV.
So is there a quick painless way that I can get the raw files out of the camera and onto DVD for viewing on a TV. Or is the raw material only viewable on the camera & computer? If the only way to get this material to DVD is by complex video editing, I could be stuck editing literally hours of footage that my family likes to film, they have the film bug, & like to film everything.
I feel stupid for asking this but why do some applications leave a disk image on the desktop after it is installed? you can eject it and it goes away but then reappears every time you launch the program again. I noticed this happens mainly with applications you get off the web such as Google Earth. It is very annoying because I like to keep my desktop clean. So my question is how do you avoid having this disk image appear every time Google Earth launches for example. Is it normal for some programs? or did I install it wrong?

Are there any particular mistakes a person could make in doing this that someone here can identify and explain how to avoid?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was installing a software update on my mother's Intel iMac. While installing, the iMac told me that there was a problem and to contact the software manufacturer. When I went to reboot, it would not. All I get is the universal sign for stop (circle with a 45 degree angle line through it). My mother has no backups whatsoever. She needs her information. I am in need of a safe way to retrieve her information.I have tried the basic help from Apple's site--nothing worked. A friend told me that I might be able to boot the computer from a bootable external hard drive and pull the information off that way.

I use Carbon Copy Cleaner to backup. I've set it to backup to a sparse, rewritable disk image. If I, say, delete a file, then do another backup, will the file I deleted still be in the folder it was in, or will it disappear as if the backup was cleared and redone?

i have made a bootable lion hard drive before and it worked fine. But after the 10.7.4 update i am unable to make another one. When i follow the usual steps
1- download lion from app store
2- show package contents
3- contents- shared contens- drag and drop them dmg file into disk utility (something along those lines).
4-restore drive (external hard drive) and drag the lion file to the 'source' area and the external hard drive to the 'destination' area.
5- When i hit restore it does everything but at the end it says something like "failed, invalid argument'?
