OS X :: Cannot Burn A Bootable Image File Using OS X 10.3.9's Disk Utility Software?

Feb 21, 2009

I'm currently trying to burn a bootable image file using OS X 10.3.9's Disk Utility software. I have an external DVD Burner connected to a G4 Cube via Firewire. The issue is that when I select "burn" from the menu and point to the respective .dmg file, Disk Utility does not recognise the attached DVD burner. The burner is however recognised in Toast (which I also have installed). What might the issue be? I have searched high and low on the net in an attempt to diagnose the issue to no avail. Is there an alternative solution to burning bootable disks in 10.3.9?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Create A Virtualbox Bootable Image File From A Bootable Usb Flash Drive

Jun 1, 2012

I created a bootable usb drive on a windows pc using windows 7 to install windows 8 preview and want to make a copy to install in virtualbox on my imac and burn to a dvd that will work on pc.

I've tried using disk utility to create an image and get a file ESD-USB.dmg, but virtualbox won't boot a dmg file.

I tried converting it in the terminal with:

hdiutil convert -format UDRO -o windows8.iso ESD-USB.dmg

but the resulting file was windows8.iso.dmg. I changed the name to windows8.iso, but even so, virtualbox complains it's unbootable.

I tried the terminal command:

dd if=/dev/disk4 of=windows8.iso

but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

I tried the terminal command:

cat /dev/disk4 > windows8.iso

but virtualbox complained that it's not bootable.

MacBook Pro :: Trying To Burn A .cdr File To A Dual Layer Dvd Using Disk Utility?

Jun 28, 2010

I have been trying to burn a .cdr file to a dual layer dvd using Disk Utility. I got it to work once, but I tried four times. I think that it must be very sensitive or something, because I can't figure out any other factor that affects it.

Has anybody else run into this problem, and if so, what's your solution? I think it may have to do with vibrations of the disk drive or something, but I would be lying if I said I knew that for sure...

OS X :: Converting CDR To ISO / Bootable CDR Disk Image To An ISO Disk Image

Sep 10, 2009

Apparently, there are two ways to convert disk images in CDR format to ISO format:

1. Rename diskimage.cdr to diskimage.iso

Or

2. hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o diskimage.iso diskimage.cdr

The first method is really quick while the second method takes quite a long time. Do the two methods yield the same ISO file? In particular, I would like to convert a bootable CDR disk image to an ISO disk image.

OS X :: Bootable Disk Utility DVD

Feb 19, 2009

Been searching for the answer to this question, so far to no avail. How can I create a bootable disk with Disk Utility on it? I need to run Disk Utility to repair my main startup disk on my G5 tower, which is running tiger 10.4.11. I do not have access to the original system installation disks for this computer. I also have an early Intel Dual Core tower running Tiger 10.4.11. That machine has Toast Titanium version 8.0.1. Also no access to the system installation disks.

Tried to create a bootable clone using Disk Utility & got this:“Restore Failure, Recovery partition restores can only be done on GPT partition maps.”I may need to purchase Carbon Copy Cloner ($40) or Super Duper ($28).I had been using my free CCC v. 3.4.7 to make clones of OS X 10.6.8 but now I upgraded to OS X 10.9.4 & got message that CCC not compatible with Mavericks unless I buy the CCC v. 3.5.6.I read several places that DU can do back up clones same as CCC or SD!I launched DU from recovery system, selected Mac HD as source & my XHD as destination. Both are formatted Max OS Extended (Journaled)So, what am I doing wrong? Also, what advantages, if any, are there in using CCC or SD instead of the free DU?

OS X :: Unable To Burn ISO's To DVD Using Disk Utility

Jul 20, 2009

It all started last week when I tried burning an ISO to a blank Memorex DVD-R. When I inserted the DVD it would eject the CD over and over again no matter how many times I tried. The same thing would happen if I used a Memorex CD-R. Now these CD's worked in the past without any issues, and seem to work just fine on my other computers.

I decided to go out and buy a different brand of DVD-R's at Office Depot, thinking the laptop just wasn't really into these DVD's anymore. I ended up buying TDK DVD-R's. The computer seemed to like these more because it didn't eject them when I placed them into the drive.

OS X :: Burn ISO To USB Or External HDD With Disk Utility - Error 254

Jul 28, 2009

I am desperately trying to burn a ISO file to a USB and external HD but Disk Utility does not want to. Instead I get the error message "Could not validate source - error 254". So there must be a problem with the source which is the ISO file.

I already tried setting the Partition Map Scheme to both Master Boot Record and GUID Partition Table. I also formatted the drive to FAT and HFS+. I cannot find the cause of this error. It clearly looks like Disk Utility does not like burning ISOs to USBs or HDs.

However, I really really need to this since I cannot burn ISOs with my SuperDrive which is also a common problem [URL]with my MacBook Pro.

Intel Mac :: Disk Utility Can't Repair HD - Possible To Create New Image To Backup?

Jun 7, 2012

Two days ago my computer died and I haven't been able to get past the Apple screen since. I've tried starting in Safe mode, etc. that did not work. I just started up using my installation disk and got into Disk Utility. It says it cannot repair the disk and that I should back up as many files as possible and reformat the disk. How am I supposed to back up if I can't start up? I am currently creating a new image of the HD to an external drive but my question is if Disk Utility couldn't repair the disk, with the external drive copy also be problematic? How can I tell before I reformat the whole thing and start over?

Because of this I can't burn a disk because the disk is not being recognized. In Disk Utility, the external hard drives appear mounted and can be opened in Finder, but why aren't they appearing on my desktop (they used to)?

Applications :: Disk Utility File Too Big For CD

Oct 20, 2009

I am fairly new to the Mac world. The other day I was trying to do a disc copy of a music CD. I followed the instructions within Disk Utility, which resulted in a .dmg (disk image) file being created. However, when I went to burn the resulting file to a blank CD I found that the file was bigger than the capacity of the CD. Obviously, the disk image file itself takes extra space (in addition to the size of the original music files). Is there any other way of creating a 'snapshot' of a CD or DVD? Perhaps 'on the fly', as I do with my PC's?

OS X Yosemite :: Disk Utility - Incorrect Number Of File Links Error

Dec 1, 2014

I recently ran a ‘verify’ scan in Disk Utility as a precaution after Word crashed. An ‘incorrect number of file links’ error message showed up, as well as a prompt to repair this using Disk Utility from the Recovery HD. However, when I do a scan from the Recovery HD version of Disk Utility, no error messages or repair prompts appear.

My questions… Is this something to be concerned about? How can it be fixed? Would it be best to do a clean install of OSX? I only lost a little bit of data so I was pretty lucky.
