That said my problem is the internet is really slow when I connect my macbook to a my samsung 24" monitor. Super slow and when I disconnect, the internet is perfectly fine. I use [URL] to measure the speed and with the monitor I get usually around .05 Mbps to 3Mbps, without 12-19Mbps.

PowerPC :: Undo Display Rotation On External Monitor Hooked To G4?

Jan 20, 2010

I read the thread about how to pivot your screen over in another section but it didn't address what to do when it goes wrong. And it did...very wrong. I'm running a Powerbook G4 Titanium 15" laptop with Tiger OsX 10.4.11 and I hooked an external monitor to it. I was playing around with the settings and saw the rotation feature, which wasn't available until I attached the external monitor. As soon as I clicked on 90 degrees, both the main screen and the external fritzed out. I could vaguely see things through the haze on the main screen but the whole thing had stopped responding to all mouse and keypad commands. Eventually the only thing I could do to regain control was a hard shut off with the power button and unplug the external. After that the main screen booted up just fine but the moment I hook up the external again they go blue screen of death on me and I can't see what I'm doing to undo what I did!! I tried hitting the manual reset on the screen itself, which I didn't really think would work but hey, desperate times...

After some research on the internet I found out that, contrary to what the other thread says, not all Tiger enabled computers can run the rotation function, apparently because the scan rate, or something like that is too low. Which is why the option was disabled when only the main screen was running. Nice to know and would have been good to know sooner but what I need help with now is HOW DO I FIX THIS MESS?!!!! Some sites mentioned archiving (I'm moderately computer savvy but I'm not totally sure I know how to do that) and some have mentioned the boot disk, which I have but I want to make sure I know what will happen if I do that. I've backed up my files just in case. Will it erase the programs I've installed or just my settings? Or is it much simpler and is there something in the utilities I can mess with that will reset stuff?

MacBook :: Playing Games With The MB Hooked Up To 24" Apple Display?

I've read a lot about how the unibody alu Macbook have far better graphics than the old Intel graphics chips. My question is, however, what kind of frame rates do you get if you play games at 1900x1200 resolution on an external display? How do games like Unreal Tournament 2004, Civilization 4, WOW and others perform? Is it playable or should I get a Macbook Pro?

MacBook Pro :: Can't Fix A Crashed Hard Drive - Impeding Circumstances

Jun 27, 2012

I have an early 2008 Macbook pro 15" 2.4ghz (T8300). Now when it attempts to startup I get the white screen with the spinning circle but it stays stalled at this screen indefinitely. While the icon continues spinning theres also a constant clicking sound coming from the hard drive. I have the Snow Leopard Install disc, but unfortunately the disc drive malfunctions ever since the laptop was dropped several years ago. (This happened a good year before the hard drive began failing) So booting from the disc wont work.

I have an external usb drive that I thought I could boot from but would need to make a separate partition, thus losing over 2TB of music, movies, and documents. What I think I should do...?: Buy a small SSD to replace the failing hard drive. Using another mac, plug in the SSD via usb and install Snow leopard onto it. Then plug the SSD into the Macbook pro via usb and boot from it to make sure everything works. Then install the drive internally.

Software :: Unable To Get Display / Hooked Up To Sony HDTV Via HDMI To DVI Cable

May 10, 2009

I recently received a late 2007 mac mini as a hand me down from my parents and I'm trying to hook it up to a Sony HDTV via HDMI to DVI cable. I bought the cables I needed and attempted to set it up, however when I turn on the system nothing appears on the display. I've been searching posts and various forums, but haven't really made any progress because most troubleshooting guides are focused upon display problems like pixels and refreshes.

Unfortunately I don't have a VGA monitor to use (which is what the mini was previously used on) to try and see if that works.

Intel Mac :: Won't Shutdown When External Hard Drive Is Hooked Up

May 25, 2012

I have a 2011 iMac which i've loved using. I bought a Seagate goflex external harddrive so I could start using time machine. I've noticed that whenver I power my iMac down it will sit on the grey screen just before shutting off for a long time. In fact, it will not actually shut down until i unplug my external hard drive. As soon as I unplug my harddrive the mac starts thinking again and shuts down within seconds. Why it would do this. I now hard plug my harddrive in because of this, which is kinda of dumb since I bought it to work as a time machine.

OS X :: Display A Little Thumbnail In Finder When Viewing In A List Format?

Feb 13, 2009

Why do some images not display a little thumbnail in finder when viewing in a list format, but they do in all other viewing modes?

And some images will have a thumbnail, and then when I rename the file to organize my folders, etc, the thumbnail disappears, sometimes from Cover-flow ode also. Which I also don't understand.

Similarly with videos, why do some videos not display a thumbnail/screen-cap in any view mode, when other videos, which as the same file type do?

Finally this is only a recent problem for me, but more serious than the aforementioned issues. I've had some images/files, that show an in correct thumbnail/cover-flow image. It shows one thing, but when you open it, it's actually a different picture. Mostly it happens when I rename an image, but its also happened just normally.

Is there a specific cause that I can fix, or is it just one of those things where you run the maintenance scripts, turn you computer off and let/hope it fixes itself?

Software :: ICal Time Setup In Events Stuck To 24 Hours Display

Jan 26, 2010

I'm on a new 21inch iMac (3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB 1067b MHz DDR3, running 10.6.2) and I'm having problems in iCal (version 4.0.1) when I'm adding new events. When I add the event all goes fine until I come to put the time in. It seems to stick to 24hours display (08.00) but if I try to do likewise eg: 16.00 it changes first to 01.00 then 06.00.

Then lets just say I have a long meeting that runs from 09.00 to 12.00, the 09.00 time goes in fine but then it changes the 12.00 to 10.00. I've had a good look in preferences but I can't see anything I'm missing like a maximum length of meeting being set at 2hrs. I've tried having the day run from 1am in the morning to midnight, using 12 or 24hrs displayed at one time, and can't seem to crack it.

As the title states. I am looking for an external display that matches the display on my black MacBook. I want one with the same gloss finish as my MacBook, this way I can calibrate both screens to look the same. That way when I switch screens it doesn't look different.

Anyone know of a screen that looks identical to the (previous generation) MacBook? I was thinking of getting a Samsung T240 but it has a different finish. How are ASUS screens? Any screens out there that have the same gloss finish?

MacBook Pro :: Use Computer In Closed Clam-shell (display Closed) Mode With An External Display?

Jun 4, 2012

I have an 13" MBP that I ordered new in April, 2012. It is running Lion. I have an external monitor that is capable of 1440x900 resolution. I have an external keyboard and trackpad hooked up, and I like to close my MBP up and stick it in a BookArc. I want to be able to have the internal display disabled and to have the MBP only allow me to put windows on the external display, so long as the lid is closed. I also want to be sure that I am taking advantage of the resolutions available on my external monitor, which are higher than those supported by the internal display (specifically 1440x900).

This doesn't seem to work because I either have to allow the MBP to continue to draw my desktop across both screens (internal and external), OR use the "mirror displays" mode, which restricts my resolution of my external monitor. This means I either forgoe the additional resolution benefits of my external monitor, or I end up with windows that fall off-the-cliff, so to speak, because they are drawn in the portion of the desktop that would be shown on my internal display (which is closed).

I've read the community support pages on using the MBP with an external monitor, most relevantly, this page. It simply recommends using the "mirror displays" option. However, this option, as I mentioned above, doesn't allow me to make use of the additional resolution, and my external display looks bad. how to keep the 13" MBP in closed clamshell position, with the internal display disabled, and use my external monitor at resolutions higher than those allowed by the 13" MBP but which are available to my external monitor when not in "mirror displays" mode?
