I've read a lot about how the unibody alu Macbook have far better graphics than the old Intel graphics chips. My question is, however, what kind of frame rates do you get if you play games at 1900x1200 resolution on an external display? How do games like Unreal Tournament 2004, Civilization 4, WOW and others perform? Is it playable or should I get a Macbook Pro?
View 2 RepliesThis 15" MacBook Pro is abotu a year and a half old, and I'm running into a bit of a problem. For most things, it's fine. I use it for photoshop, aperture, etc. And a couple months ago, I used to play Team Fortress 2 and other games in bootcamp.
But now these games have come out for the Mac and they run sluggishly at best. It's VERY choppy. At first I thought this was something to do with the program itself, but after doing a lot of research, no one else seemed to be complaining abotu the problems I was. This leads me to believe that there is a problem with my computer.. So how can I test this? Are there any ways to speed up my mac? Maybe an update, or a fresh install, or something?
I was wandering if there's a possible way to connect my PS3 to my 20" mac to use it as a display for playing games. Also, if there is, will it be 720p HD? I looked on Google but couldn't find much useful information.

I have tried all resolutions but the game still goes to 4:3 when I select fullscreen. I have my Mini connected to a 40" tv via HDMI.

The only thing that really changes drastically for me is the CPU temp. I mostly hover around 48 at idle.
I'm not a big gamer, just a couple hours a week, perhaps. This particular problem occurs while playing Left 4 Dead 2 and Half Life 2. Basically, the computer just goes to sleep while playing the game. It doesn't seem to hurt anything. Hitting they keys a few times brings the computer back and the game back into play without a hitch. Except the audio sometimes needs to catch up. But it sure is annoying. I haven't actually timed it. But it doesn't seem entirely random. It seems to be at somewhat predictable intervals. Maybe 15-25 minutes. I looked all through my settings (especially Energy Saver), and keyboard shortcuts and it doesn't seem that any of them would cause the computer to sleep. The computer is plugged into the wall.

I would even say it runs at 60fps But you need to download the beta X3100 drivers from intel that solve the crashing problem when you play the game with the normal drivers. And download the game from direct2drive or EA so you wont need the DVD Why does Mac OS suck so much ass when you play games? Under bootcamp I can run anything and the games wont run slow.
View 4 Replies View Relatedthis rev B i got is much better than the rev A i used to owned. the youtube and movie lagging is gone. but it's still not powerful enough for a game. i played eschalon book:1 which is not quite heavy and demanding like the new games out there. let alone playing half life 2. it's overheating and locking down the cpu to 800mhz just like my old air. see the screenshot. after playing for 20 minutes, it's becoming very laggy and unplayable. i guess this thin mba is not ok unless playing simple games like gamehouse's card and board games.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy top-of-the-line Macbook Pro 15" locks up after about an hour (or less) of use when playing what is usually a Source Engine based game running in Windows on Bootcamp (booting into Windows). The screen goes black and the audio gets stuck in a loop and the game crashes. My only option is to hold down the power button.It seems of course to be caused by the GPU overheating.I can play a little longer when I have the laptop sitting on a packet of frozen spinach, sometimes peas or even chicken fillets.. but I don't need to say that this is unacceptable, especially when you're 3/4 a way through a L4D2 campaign.

Fans are around 6k RPM (playing The Sims 3 on Windows 7 Professional, using Everest Ultimate Edition for monitoring). I just wonder if it's ok or not to be like that. BTW, should I put on the hard case while playing? And can someone give some advice for playing games on the MBP?

So I am going to put my case a new, although I believe the answers are going to be the same as on other similar discussions.
I recently bought MacBook Pro (15 inch, 2.2 GHz, late 2011, OS X Lion). The system usually runs perfectly. I just have two issues:
i. Occassionally it freezes up when more then one apps are running. I have noticed this is usually when Firefox is running in the background. Also happened with Safari a couple of times.
But my main concern and query is the point no. ii (below)
ii. During the normal usuage the fans don't make a noise (even with multiple apps that are not burden on the RAM). The systems heat up is as normal as that of a PC while running on its normal situation. However, when I play games (like BioShock, Sims etc) Mac just heats up immensly and fans kick in. I have never seen/felt a computer get this hot before.
Which MacBook Pro screen size would you choose for the following?
- Viewing 6 or more hours daily, not hooked up to external display.
- Will be my main computer.
- Used for work and entertainment, heavy emailing, use of iWorks software, light photo and video editing, surfing, no gaming.
- Will go with me nearly everywhere, home, office, cottage, travel. Used on desk, heavily on couch, deck, kitchen, bed, cafe.
- Price not a factor.

My idea is this; buy the nvidia 3D vision, install windows 7 (since the nvidia 3D vision is windows only) and buy a 3D capable monitor, and I should be able to play games, view content in 3D. After doing research, I found that the nvidia Geforce 9600 GT is supported, however I found no indication that the nvidia Geforce 9600M GT is supported. My question is this, technically speaking should my plan work, or is the difference between the Geforce 9600 GT and 9600M GT significant enough to alter my idea.

I just got a new MBP and in an attempt to not overheat the processors when playing games i usually turn the fan speed up to around 5.5k rpm. They do a great job of keeping the processor at a decent level (~70 degrees Celsius) but i wonder if I'm doing the fans any harm. I do play for quite a long time (3 to 4 hours sometimes) and I have noticed a *very* slight humming from the fans which i reckon is wear and tear.
am i the only one? i just tried playing modern warfare, after playing it awhile, i get 1 sec freezes constantly after a few more minutes

While playing some 3D games with the macbook air 2010, the 320m GPU's temperature reached 88'C(~190'F). Is that normal?
Games: Dragon age, mess effect, etc.

I love my MBP and know that I enjoy it more than any other laptop out there but I am annoyed at the fact that it can't even play World of Warcraft smoothly. I didn't do much research before I bought the MBP concerning the 9400M, because I assumed anything in the 9000 series would be at least as good or comparable to a 7950GT. I was dead wrong. The thing can't even play WoW at above 20FPS in soft conditions.
Also, I don't know what the safe operating temperature (or even the maximum for that matter), but the temp always hovers at 180 degrees when playing games. Really considering upgrading to a new MBP or just buying a new iMac but I hate how the graphic cards become outdated so quickly in these things. Every other spec, the memory and CPU, hard drive, etc, is perfectly fine and acceptable for nearly any situation. It's only the graphics card..
I have been experiencing crashes while playing games and watching a few movies on my MBpro 15" Mid-2010 i5 Gt330m. It will just lock up all of a sudden and then play a continuous sound loop with a black screen. I then have to force shut it down, hold the power key down the first time-nothing....then try a second time to hold it down to shut it off and then it goes off.
Tried the update recommended by TS4088 and its still doing it. I have 10+ panic reports in the last few weeks. Can't play SC2 for more than 5-10 minutes. Took it to the Apple Store today and they ran a check and of course everything comes up fine. I can get it to crash every time by playing sc2 about 5 minutes in, always on minimum settings.

Just purchased a MacBook Pro Retina, refurbished (because why not - the same product for a cheaper price) around a month ago. It's the 13 inch and is the model before the most recent one came out (4GB of RAM instead of 8GB - late 2013). From the very first day, playing a full-screen video on any site (be it YouTube, Facebook, etc) just makes the fan much louder than usual (so loud that you can almost hear it more over the video itself). Thought it may have been just a thing with Flash Player being buggy, but the problem has persisted for a while now. I'm not even pushing the CPU to any limits - literally playing a full-screen video on Facebook (not even in HD) makes the fan go crazy.
Just last night I tried installing Borderlands 2 and it was the same thing - FPS rate was fine, no lag, just the fan was so loud that I actually got scared for my computer and turned it off. After closing the app and checking out the fan temperature, it was at 91c.
Never happens when browsing/surfing or doing my usual work.
Should I go give it back to Apple? The thing is I start university in less than a week (and hence will be traveling), so not sure if I can afford to give my laptop in to them for a long period of time (I know it should be free though since mine is a refurb item). May it just be an issue that is quickly repairable or is this worse?

That said my problem is the internet is really slow when I connect my macbook to a my samsung 24" monitor. Super slow and when I disconnect, the internet is perfectly fine. I use [URL] to measure the speed and with the monitor I get usually around .05 Mbps to 3Mbps, without 12-19Mbps.

When hooked up to a TV the display has a blue tint to it. I have tried the 2 TVs in my house, both have the same result. It's so blue its not usable. When hooked up to a 20" 1440x900 reg monitor it looks fine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedBassicly all is well with bootcamp, i downloaded it a few days back and its running good. The only problem is it is hopeless with windows games. I done research before i installed it that all these games would run fine on my specs and as soon as i play them its just very laggy. all settings are down completely low. The games i have problems with are COD 4, CSS, And Aion. My specs should be able to run them. Is it possible the ram is split or something between the 2 systems maybe?
On the windows side i have 80gb hard drive with 45gb free space remaining.
I have Windows XP Home edition, and the latest nvidia drivers installed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI read the thread about how to pivot your screen over in another section but it didn't address what to do when it goes wrong. And it did...very wrong. I'm running a Powerbook G4 Titanium 15" laptop with Tiger OsX 10.4.11 and I hooked an external monitor to it. I was playing around with the settings and saw the rotation feature, which wasn't available until I attached the external monitor. As soon as I clicked on 90 degrees, both the main screen and the external fritzed out. I could vaguely see things through the haze on the main screen but the whole thing had stopped responding to all mouse and keypad commands. Eventually the only thing I could do to regain control was a hard shut off with the power button and unplug the external. After that the main screen booted up just fine but the moment I hook up the external again they go blue screen of death on me and I can't see what I'm doing to undo what I did!! I tried hitting the manual reset on the screen itself, which I didn't really think would work but hey, desperate times...
After some research on the internet I found out that, contrary to what the other thread says, not all Tiger enabled computers can run the rotation function, apparently because the scan rate, or something like that is too low. Which is why the option was disabled when only the main screen was running. Nice to know and would have been good to know sooner but what I need help with now is HOW DO I FIX THIS MESS?!!!! Some sites mentioned archiving (I'm moderately computer savvy but I'm not totally sure I know how to do that) and some have mentioned the boot disk, which I have but I want to make sure I know what will happen if I do that. I've backed up my files just in case. Will it erase the programs I've installed or just my settings? Or is it much simpler and is there something in the utilities I can mess with that will reset stuff?
I currently use the apple bluetooth keyboard with my mac mini setup. It is not on a desk but I use they keyboard in my lap because the mini is hooked to the tv. All I can hear when using it is the battery's rattling around inside the holding tube. Is this normal? If not Im definetly going to the store and have it replaced.

All of these games aren't working well, I've tried everything, spent a lot of time trying to get appropriate drivers and make it work. I'm sure there are some of you that have/had the same issues like me, ofcourse using the same video card.
