MacBook Pro :: Will MBP Cover Being Closed?
Dec 27, 2009
Cause heat problems? I am using my MBP with the cover closed for space constraints , connected to an external display along with keyboard and the mouse is BT.Over all am I looking at causing damage if I do this for long term.I'm contemplating selling it and downsizing to a Mini.

I'm sure you've all experienced this (if not then you don't have a unibody macbook pro, lol). I've had about 8 unibodies both 15" and 13" and the light grease fro the keys occasionally gets transfered to the screen in the shape of keys, and I've seen many people talk about a little piece of fabric (looks just like the screen cloth) they place over the keyboard to prevent this from happening. Anyone have an eBay or another online link to something like this? I think keyboard covers are silly, so just looking for the fabric solution.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro with a solid state (flash memory) disk. The battery life is good while I'm using it, but if I leave it with the cover off for a few days (asleep, I assume), it'll be mostly discharged when I open it up. I assume this isn't normal - it shouldn't be losing that much charge when closed and hibernating. I don't have "wake for ethernet access" checked, if that makes a difference. What's going on - why won't it hibernate?

I have a new MacBook Air with an External monitor. I have no keyboard or mouse or trackpads attached to it. When I close the cover, instead of going to sleep, it goes into clamshell mode. I even opened a support session with Apple, and the technician said I should take it to the Genius Bar. Did that and the Genius found that the same thing happens on every MacBook. Why doesn't it just go to sleep?

picked up a unibody last Saturday night, and opened the battery cover tonight. The latch was opened with little resistance, but now won't close. The latch edge sits about 1/8" up, and I can't find anything which would seem to prevent it from closing.
Anyone else had a troublesome battery latch, and how did you resolve it?

I have an 13" MBP that I ordered new in April, 2012. It is running Lion. I have an external monitor that is capable of 1440x900 resolution. I have an external keyboard and trackpad hooked up, and I like to close my MBP up and stick it in a BookArc. I want to be able to have the internal display disabled and to have the MBP only allow me to put windows on the external display, so long as the lid is closed. I also want to be sure that I am taking advantage of the resolutions available on my external monitor, which are higher than those supported by the internal display (specifically 1440x900).
This doesn't seem to work because I either have to allow the MBP to continue to draw my desktop across both screens (internal and external), OR use the "mirror displays" mode, which restricts my resolution of my external monitor. This means I either forgoe the additional resolution benefits of my external monitor, or I end up with windows that fall off-the-cliff, so to speak, because they are drawn in the portion of the desktop that would be shown on my internal display (which is closed).
I've read the community support pages on using the MBP with an external monitor, most relevantly, this page. It simply recommends using the "mirror displays" option. However, this option, as I mentioned above, doesn't allow me to make use of the additional resolution, and my external display looks bad. how to keep the 13" MBP in closed clamshell position, with the internal display disabled, and use my external monitor at resolutions higher than those allowed by the 13" MBP but which are available to my external monitor when not in "mirror displays" mode?

I am wondering that is it essential to connect power adaptor all the time while operating in closed calmshell mode? When I unpluged the cable it didn't work. Is there some way?

I just bought a clear speck case for the MBA. I noticed that the case weighs a little bit and when the top cover is on, at a certain angle, it closes the MBA due to the sheer weight.
Over time, will this loosen the hinge?
On another point, how the **** do you get the top cover off easily? I scratched the cover with a credit card the first time around! The thing is almost impossible to pry off!

I have had multiple Apple laptops in the past and never gotten (nor seen the need for) AppleCare. Both Pismo, CS1400 and MBP first gen. My experience is that any weak point will show up during the first year and I have sent in at least one to Apple and they have fixed it under original warranty during first year, no problem.
Since battery seems to be the weak link I was planning on getting AppleCare for my new MBA. However if that is not the covered by AppleCare then I am looking for some pointers/reason why I should even consider AppleCare for my MBA.

My girlfriend's MacBook has some deep scratches on the bottom that a polish kit would not fix. I wanted to buy a new bottom cover and replace it for her. I have found quite a few on eBay, but I am not sure on which model will fit. She has the new white NVIDIA MacBook. I assume that because the motherboard is different, would she need a case specific for the NVIDIA model, or will an older Core 2 Duo case work all the same?

I've read up on Speck brand plastic covers for the MBP line. Unfortunately, many claim the case adds to the aluminum case being scratched than without.Unless you've had good experiences, what other brands of case protectors exist, that are worthy of purchase?

Are your aluminum MBP cover's flexible? By cover, I mean the lid of the laptop. Mine is flexible where the apple logo is. Even if I press down gently around that area. Is this a fault in my MBP or is this normal in everyone else's ?

My disc drive isn't working at all - it doesn't even accept the disc or make a noise to accpet it/eject it. It doesn't make any noise when I click the eject button or do anything.
I had a repair done to my mac a few weeks ago when the graphics card stopped working, I've only just attempted to put a disc in since - I don't know if the repair could have effected it at all.

I have a base level 1st Gen Unibody 15" Macbook Pro. It has the removable battery and I bought it refurbished online because it was way cheaper. I do have Applecare. A few weeks ago it began randomly turning off. Like I will be doing stuff, have plenty of battery left according to both the software meter and the green lights on the side, then it will click, the screen will turn black and I won't be able to turn it back on.

I just got a 13" MBA last week and noticed that the black plastic hinge cover moves a bit and makes noise when I push it lightly.
It also rattles when the fan blows hard. I took it to the Genius Bar but they said that the hinge cover is designed that way.
I checked a few demonstration units and they didn't seem to have the same amount of play. Is this normal?

When I move my MacBook I can feel my battery moving inside the macbook as well. My battery cover seems to not sit flush with the rest of the body. It sits enough so it doesn't bother me, but when I turn over the macbook and look at it, it gets more annoying. Do I have ocd?

Is there a good, sleek, slimline, and stylish hard cover out there to fit this model? When I first purchased the notebook, all of the hardcovers looked horrible. But now some of the new MBP models have fantastic covers available. Also, it's important that the cover doesn't hold in any heat since I do a lot of GPU and CPU intensive work.

My macbook's magnet has died, or so it seems. It barely holds the top case and bottom case together, and does not "snap" shut until they are less than 7 mm apart. if i turn it upright the two side pop about 5mm apart and do not close until at less than about a 60 degree angle to the desk. Is there a way to remagnetize them, does this warrant a trip to the apple store, or do i just deal with it? The computer is 14/12 months old, manufacturing/purchase.

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13' 2.53 GHz, and it's been getting hotter a lot more quickly, and a lot more often then since I got it. I opened it up and saw a lot of dust in there. I didn't have any compressed air in the house at the time, but i'm also concerned about messing something up.
