MacBook Pro :: When Try To Change Resolution To Any Other / Display Goes Black
Apr 26, 2012
I am trying to use external display with my Unibody Aluminium Macbook Pro (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 2.26Gh, snow leopard). Cable setting I use is quite complicated as it is: macbook: minidisplay port>hdmi> DVI D : display. Display is LG Flatron W2242T (4:3).So I hooked everything up and macbook detected display without any problem. The problem arises when it comes to resolution. Maximum resolution I can set (and in fact the only except 800xsomething) is 1152x870 and not only it is to low, but also it does not respect 4:3 ratio so it looks quite bad. So bad, that i cant really work on a setup like that. When I try to change resolution to any other, Display goes black. I tried using some apps, but they dont really work.

I just got the latest 13" Macbook Air and hooked it up to my Apple 24 inch LED Cinema Display. It works great but I've noticed that the resolution is not the same as when I had my 2008 Unibody Macbook attached to it. Everything is bigger (i.e. lower resolution) when the MBA is connected. I went into Display Preferences and changed it to the highest resolution but it didn't change. It's not that big a deal, but I thought I'd ask and see if anyone had any suggestions on how to get better resolution on the cinema display. Or is it not possible with the new MBA connected?

i have an mac pro intel 2x2.66 OS: 10.4.11
my screen died so i had to get the 27 led and have the atlona converter between the display and mac ( which works fine) I logged into my main user and then into user2 my main user's display resolution is set to 2560 and user2 was set to 1920 i opened preferences and switched resolution in user2 to 2560 the screen flashed a bit and logged me out. then it would not log back in (it actually logged me out of the main user too)
what happens is that it starts to log in, there were a few finder windows open so, it starts to open those. but it doesn't show any icons or the text with available disk space... there's a beach ball for 30 seconds or so then it just logs back out.
it's totally user specific because i can log in and use my main user fine. i can even log in to another user account that i never really used.
I tried logging in in safe mode and get the same results. I can log in in with terminal with that user and see it's files, etc... I even tried using command line to move some prefs out out (i put them back after it didn't work).
I imagine some file related to the finder is corrupted or something? one of the prefs i tried to move was com.apple.finder.plist as well as bunch of others like windowserver desktop displays, etc...

Since downloading the new OS Lion10, my screen display continues to change resolution (+4x) without any prompt, changing to a new app is the only way to go to the original resolution… Is there a setting that needs to be changed to stop this from happening

I'm trying to write an AppleScript to change the resolution of my external display from 1920x1080 to 800x600 and back to 1920x1080 (it has a few issues and this fixes them, but I'm tired of going into System Preferences to do this all the time). I can get the script to open up System Preferences and option-click the scaled button (so all of the different resolutions come up), but I can't get it to select anything inside of the box where all of the different resolutions are (I can't find what I'm supposed to refer to it as anywhere and if I find something it doesn't work). Here's the code I have right now:
tell application "System Preferences"
reveal anchor "displaysDisplayTab" of pane "com.apple.preference.displays"
end tell
tell application "System Events" to tell process "System Preferences" to tell window "LCDTV16"
[code]...

My brand new 15 inch MacBook Pro was working fine for a week. Today the display went to sleep and when I tried to wake it, it remained dark, items barely visible. I could see the display brightness meter changing, but the brightness did not. Restarting didn't help. Called Apple and they're going to replace the computer. Has this happened to anybody else? Note: I have the hi-res anti-glare display.

The title says it all really... Quite a simple problem that I can't find any answer to!
I've hooked up my 30" Apple Cinema Display to the new iMac 27" and the highest resolution I'm getting as an option is 1280x800... The iMac correctly detects the ACD as a Cinema HD display but limits my resolution. Why oh why?!

I own 23 and 30" Cinema Displays. I like the 23 because everything is larger and easier to read than in the 30". I mostly work in Logic and love that I see lots of things on the 30" but the 23" is much easier on my eyes.Is there such a thing as a display with 2560x1600 (like the 30" Apple) but that is LARGER than a 30 inch so I can see everything bigger in Logic??? Maybe a 34 or 37"? Did a search but haven't come up with anything other than other 30" displays.

So, is it not possible to change the resolution of the anti-glare screen to a smaller one? Or why do people complain about the high resolution all the time... "I want the anti-glare design but I can't read text that small..."

the 13.3" glossy screen resolution?
I was at the Apple store for almost an hour this morning jumping between anti-glare and glossy MBPs. To my shock, I thought the smaller real estate produced much sharper, easier to read text on a glossy screen, but I love the 17".

I'm thinking of getting a MBP 13'', together with an external display. That way I get the portability of a MBP 13'' while maintaining an in-house big external display and 400$ in my wallet, only losing a bit of processor power (which is found negligible by most users).
My question has to do with resolution. MBP 13'''s resolution is 1280 by 800, right? My question is: if I buy a display with higher resolution, will I be able to enjoy that resolution? Or no matter how big my external display's resolution is, will I always be stuck with 1280*800?

I use an external monitor from Dell with my Macbook Pro 13.3". For some reason I am not allowed to set this monitor at highest possible resolution? Or perhaps that's the best for this monitor which admittedly is quite old. But when I go into my system preferences it shows option for higher resolutions but doesn't allow me to select one.

I came back from work to wake up my iMac. It made the noise but the screen stayed black. I tried restarting by holding the power button- I can hear it start and the chime but still have a black screen. I tried resetting the pram, and unplugging the cord but I still get a black screen. I can hear the chime though; I'm not sure if that means anything. I just had the hard drive replaced in February so I hope it's not that. just wanted to clarify that when I restart, I get the chime but the screen stays black- I don't get to the grey screen. So I'm assuming right now that my display may be shot?

I have set my display to sleep even when plugged in and when it is idle for only one minute. The screensaver is set for 5 minutes (after the display sleeps!), but the screensaver always comes on. I can leave my MBP on all night and the screensaver will run all night. This issue is sometimes fixed by a reboot, but then it comes back shortly thereafter. E.g. when I went to bed last night, the screen would sleep. When I left this morning, the screen did not sleep. I only used the computer for ten minutes in between.

I have an 28 inch Dell LCD screen that has a native resolution of 1920x1200. Does the MBA support that resolution through the Mini DisplayPort? The specs on the Apple website list the following:
"Supported resolutions: 1280 by 800 (native), 1152 by 720, 1024 by 640, and 800 by 500 pixels at 16:10 aspect ratio; 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, and 640 by 480 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio; 720 by 480 pixels at 3:2 aspect ratio". But I read that the MBA can also do higher res.

I'm using a MBA connected to a 52" TV with a 1920X1080 resolution when I teach. I often turn mirroring on and off depending on what I'm teaching and what program I'm using. When I turn mirroring on it defaults to a 1400X1050 resolution and I have to manually go into display settings and change it to the higher resolution. Is there a way to set the default settings so that it will always default to 1920X1080?

I have the latest model of macbook pro 15" (entry-level one) and since a few minutes ago the screen has gone mad. It seems it has gone to lower resolution and the desktop doesn't fit on the screen anymore. I have to drag the mouse to the edges of the screen to see the parts that are hidden. I tried SMC reset, PRAM reset and it didn't fixed it.

I'm in the market for a new external display. I believe I have 3 options with the Thunderbolt(not mini-display)port on my Mac.Using my mini-displayport to VGA adapterUsing my mini-displayport to HDMI adapterUsing just a thunderbolt cable.I believe that there are Thunderbolt displays on the market (AOC has a 21:9 one I believe).
What is the maximum resolution for an external display for my MacBook Pro? Does my mac support 4K? Does it support 21:9? Specifications of my MacBook:
-MacBookPro9,2
-OSX 10.9 Yosemite
-13" mid 2012 not retina
-250GB SSD
-16GB RAM
-Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB

As the title states. I am looking for an external display that matches the display on my black MacBook. I want one with the same gloss finish as my MacBook, this way I can calibrate both screens to look the same. That way when I switch screens it doesn't look different.
Anyone know of a screen that looks identical to the (previous generation) MacBook? I was thinking of getting a Samsung T240 but it has a different finish. How are ASUS screens? Any screens out there that have the same gloss finish?

I have been having some problems with my Macbook Pro. I have a new BenQ screen connected to it via the Mini Display Port to VGA adapter from Apple. No matter what I do, I cant seem to be able to change the resolution to anything higher than 1280x1024, which is a pretty stupid resolution to have on a 27'' monitor. Sometimes when I plug it in, it gives me the option to change the resolution to 1920x1080.
But when I select it, the screen goes black and displays the message "No signal detected". Now, as it happens, I have a copy of windows installed on a partition of my hdd, and the screen works flawlessly on it. full HD with 75 Hertz. So that shows that it is not a hardware problem, it has to be a software problem. I tried everything, including reinstalling OS X, and deleting the "windowserver" files. no success.

I have an Acer 22" display (the x223w) that I have been using with my old powermac g4 for a few years and its been great. I recently got an Aluminum macbook and wanted to use the display with it at my desk. I got a cheap mini display-port to DVI adaptor from amazon and when I plug it in, the display looks a bit fuzzy! It is set to the same resolution as when it was hooked up to the powermac, but everything looks a bit bigger (doesn't this mean the resolution is lower?) and the text especially looks a little fuzzy. Is it the cheap adaptor? I have it set to 1680X1050 on both computers. I feel like I just want to adjust the sharpness, but the display doesn't have that option. Also, it seems weird since it looks fine with the powermac.

I have my MacBook hooked up to an external monitor of 1920 x 1080 resolution. I don't use the MacBook screen at all. Every time I turn on my MacBook it displays on the external monitor as it should, but at the MacBook's 1280 x 800 resolution, which obviously looks nasty and stretched on the big monitor. I fix this by simply putting the Mac to sleep and pressing a key on my keyboard to wake it up again; and it loads in the proper resolution. Is there a way to make it display 1920 x 1080 on boot up without having to sleep and wake every single time? Keeping my MacBook in sleep mode when not in use isn't an option.
