MacBook Air :: Air Optimised For Clamshell Mode When Connecting To External Monitor?
Jan 3, 2011I have used my ultimate 11" on usual mirrored display on battery power and in clamshell mode.
A few hours ago, I was running many apps in mirrored mood and my air just began to lag so badly after an hour. Expose is slow as well as surfing and clicking. I wondered what happened. Then I plug back power supply and close the lid of Air, hence running in clamshell mode. It then returned to full speed.
Please help explain to me if title is true. It is disturbing to learn that plugging into to ext monitor could lag.

Jul 24, 2010At one point I had my external monitor set up to work with windows, so I know how, but since then I have reinstalled windows. I haven't used windows in a long time, so didn't bother setting it back up. Recently, my macbook's screen broke, I can boot into OS X fine by plugging in an external keyboard or mouse, or simply by closing the lid quickly before the primary display loads, thus booting it into clamshell mode using only an external display. I cannot however do this with windows, and since my screen is broken I cannot set the display properties as I cannot see them. Is there any way to either boot windows into clamshell mode or set the display properties using keyboard shortcuts?

Apr 6, 2012I use an external monitor from Dell with my Macbook Pro 13.3". For some reason I am not allowed to set this monitor at highest possible resolution? Or perhaps that's the best for this monitor which admittedly is quite old. But when I go into my system preferences it shows option for higher resolutions but doesn't allow me to select one.

Mar 25, 2012I have been having some problems with my Macbook Pro. I have a new BenQ screen connected to it via the Mini Display Port to VGA adapter from Apple. No matter what I do, I cant seem to be able to change the resolution to anything higher than 1280x1024, which is a pretty stupid resolution to have on a 27'' monitor. Sometimes when I plug it in, it gives me the option to change the resolution to 1920x1080.
But when I select it, the screen goes black and displays the message "No signal detected". Now, as it happens, I have a copy of windows installed on a partition of my hdd, and the screen works flawlessly on it. full HD with 75 Hertz. So that shows that it is not a hardware problem, it has to be a software problem. I tried everything, including reinstalling OS X, and deleting the "windowserver" files. no success.

There were some pricy options out there ranging from $40 to $300, and then I found the perfect solution at the thrift store today for $1.50: a napkin holder.I bought one very similar to the one pictured here, and will be sanding it down and painting it black. It works extremely well as a vertical stand, and I'm getting a second for the Dell. Forget overpriced stands and repurpose something

When I connect my monitor to my MacBook all is OK until I try to chose the 1680x1050 which is the LG's prefered resolution. When I chose it, my monitor turns to black, then after a while it shows the picture for a second, then black again.. Is this a 9400m fault, or the VGA adapter fault?If I try a MiniDisplay port to DVI, will it work in 1680 x 1050?
All the other resolutions are shown ok..

Oct 27, 2010I just found out that if I use the "mirroring" mode, and I set the resolution to 1680x1050 and 60hz(my monitor max resolution/hz), it's all kinda blurry... But if I put in sleep mode ma MPB and wake it up "switching on" my bluetooth keyboard, the monitor in my MBP doesn't even start and it just use the external monitor. In this case, there's no more blurriness but the settings are the same! Then, I can even turn on my MBP monitor (pressing some random key on its keyboard) and nothing change, still no blurriness...
How can this happen? By the way, there is another funny issue: if I use this "trick", the applications that should run in "fullscreen" (not really fullscreen, just the window that use all the screen size), like iTunes, don't do it anymore....

May 19, 2010I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch 2010 model hooked up to a NEC Multisync EA231 WMI external monitor. The monitor is supposed to have a resolution of 1920 X 1080, but my computer only recognizes 1600 x 900 as the highest resolution. I've tried both mirrored and extended desktop, and I've also hooked up the monitor through a DVI adaptor and through a displayport cable. An Apple support person suggested using a dual-link DVI adaptor, but according to the Apple site this shouldn't be necessary for 1920 x 1080 resolution (I've also heard that it's a buggy piece of hardware). Any suggestions for getting optimal resolution?

The HP 2304 widescreen monitor only works with windows mirrored and has poor resolution - nothing like the 1440 Mac tells me I'm getting. I've used the build HP display adjustments with no joy. HP does not have Mac drivers for this display.

I am using both displays and that is fine, however I would like to be able to change the font sizes in my 19" monitor, because the default one is too small. I have to get awfully close to the monitor. I am not sure how i can display it better. When I tried changing resolution from 1440x900 to others, I didn't make it right, is that the only way? All I want is for screens in this monitor to have larger fonts (all programs, whether its safari, chrome, mail, etc). I should mention I am a brand new mac user.

MacBook Pro :: Airport Only Works When In Clamshell Mode Mode
Aug 28, 2010One day I was using my MBP open and external monitor hooked up. Everything was fine until the internet went down suddenly while I was using iChat.
My airport wouldn't see a network and after a couple restarts and a few resets my airport finally connected to my network. Once connected it would only issue a self-assigned IP, which obviously wouldn't work.
I was able to get around this by manually entering in the correct info but the speeds were low at best, usually pausing and stalling every minute.
After frustratingly trying get it to work, I entered clamshell mode because there was no reason at the time to have dual monitors. Once I did, viola, the airport kicked in and started working full force. It's been this way for about a month now.
My laptop is a MacBookPro5,1 with a 2.8 GHz processor and 4 GBs of RAM.
I've read that airports will have serious degradation issues if overheated and while that may be the issue, it doesn't seem to be the case.
I have smcFanControl installed and the MBP seems to be relatively cool to the touch. The fans never seem to be loudly kicking in and I have it raised on a fan powered cooling pad.
I do, though, use pretty much every port on my MBP. External monitor, speakers, both USBs, and firewire 800 are all in use, so maybe this is a resource issue or a very area specific heat issue.
MacBook :: Resolution With External Monitor - No Signal Error
May 17, 2009I just started using my MacBook with an external monitor, and love this new set up. But, I have a quick question. When I hook it up, my screen looks like an enlarged version of what's shown on my smaller MacBook screen. This is okay, but I'd like everything (dock, menu bar, etc.) to be the same size as on the MacBook screen, only with extra desktop space, if that makes sense. Currently, since everything is just enlarged, I don't feel like I have any extra screen real estate - windows and the dock take up the same amount of space relative to the screen size as they do on the MacBook. My resolutions are 1280 x 800 on the MacBook and 1280 x 720 on the external monitor. I tried playing around with different resolutions but keep getting a No Signal error on the monitor when I use anything else. I know this is kind of a difficult question but does anybody have any ideas?

Jul 24, 2009So I've had a 15" Unibody MBP since around November and I haven't been able to get it to work with my Hanns G 19" widescreen monitor. It should work at a 1440x900 resolution but its not even listed as an option when I hook it up. The monitor has both VGA and DVI inputs but I'm using the mini to VGA adapter (I picked up VGA to connect to a projector at school). I don't know if using the DVI adapter would do the trick or not and I'm not willing to waste $30 to find out as I'm a pretty poor college student at the moment.

Aug 3, 2010I currently have a MBP1, 1 running 10.6.4 on an external monitor with the ideal resolution at 1920x1200. From time to time, when I wake my MBP from sleep through external keyboard/mouse to have it run solely on the external monitor, it sets the display at 1600x1200, so everything seems squished vertically. After a fresh reformat, the problem persists, though it is less frequent. It's just a minor annoyance that I can't seem to find a solution to fix permanently. I usually have to go to safe mode and adjust the resolution back to normal. Alternatively, only sometimes if I put it back to sleep and wake it up again with the external keyboard, it will detect the right settings.

Feb 3, 2010I have my MacBook hooked up to an external monitor of 1920 x 1080 resolution. I don't use the MacBook screen at all. Every time I turn on my MacBook it displays on the external monitor as it should, but at the MacBook's 1280 x 800 resolution, which obviously looks nasty and stretched on the big monitor. I fix this by simply putting the Mac to sleep and pressing a key on my keyboard to wake it up again; and it loads in the proper resolution. Is there a way to make it display 1920 x 1080 on boot up without having to sleep and wake every single time? Keeping my MacBook in sleep mode when not in use isn't an option.

Also note that we have two different MBPs and two different Samsung monitors (same model, ordered at different times) that do the same thing.

OS X :: Cannot Select Appropriate Resolution For External Monitor
Aug 13, 2010Recently I plugged my HD Monitor to my MacBook and the resolution changed (on the external monitor). I went to Display Preferences but I do not get any resolutions above 1600x1200. When I first used this monitor, I could use it at 1920x1080 and now I simply can't. I don't know if it's a PRAM issue. I reset it but nothing changed.
I'm using a HP 2309m monitor in VGA mode using the VGA-Mini display port adapter. I use the monitor with a PC in DVI mode, but I never use these connection at the same time. I noticed something. When I first used this monitor, Mac identified it as HP 2309 when I opened the display preferences. Now, it only recognizes it as Display.

Sep 7, 2010I have recently purchased the mini display port to DVI adapter and a Belkin DVI to HDMI cable, to plug into my MacBook & Samsung SyncMaster 2032MW monitor. However when I connect this all up the display resolution is appalling, blurry and doesnt fit the screen. I have tried all the available resolutions turned mirror-mode on & off and its still shockingly bad! Also tried this on my LG TV and still the same. I have a Dell laptop which I connect via HDMI and the resolution is amazing. I thought the MacBook would output the same?

May 23, 2012When I have my macbook hooked up to external monitor it works great unitl I put it to sleep. Sometimes it kicks right up to the external monitor but the majority of the time it cant reconnect to the monitor. It just turns blue then off then blue likes its trying to figure out what to do eventually it says out of range. I then have to unplug the external monitor, wake up my mac with the screen open reconnect the monitor wait for it to pick up and then close it again and wah laaa it works.
