MacBook Pro :: Weight Loss Program -- Remove The SuperDrive?

Nov 9, 2010

I have an early 2008 15" MBP with a SuperDrive that I never use. Can I simply remove the drive to reduce weight?

Seems that I would drop about 0.4 pounds. Yes. I'm aware of the OptiBays, but I'm more interested in losing weight than adding storage.

MacBook Pro :: Take Superdrive Out To Reduce Weight?

Apr 15, 2010

I went to Apple store yesterday. I want a new MBA badly. Only problem is the memory of current model is 2G only not expandable. The guy in the shop has no idea when new MBA will be released.

I was looking at new 13" or 15" Macbook Pro, I like it, and wonder since I don't use DVD that much, is it possible to take the drive out and reduce weight a lot?

MacBook Pro :: How Do I Remove Really Tight SuperDrive Screws

Sep 8, 2010

I'm in the process of installing an Optibay in my Macbook Pro and have run into 3 really tight screws. They are the 3.3mm Philips that are used to mount the SuperDrive and Bluetooth board. The one on the Bluetooth came out easy but the other three are really tight. I've used the Philips screw drive that came with the Optibay as well as another screwdriver but none of them budge the screws.

Anyone have any tips or special method of removing those screws?

MacBook Pro :: Weight Advantage For Removing Optical Drive?

Apr 23, 2010

A bit silly perhaps, but I was curious if anyone has ever considered removing the optical drive on their MBP in order to save weight. If you do not use it, and don't need to attach a 2nd HD inside, can you not just simply remove it and make your MBP lighter?I looked around for some specs on the internal drive but could not find how much it weighed. Anyone know? The gains would be minimal but hey every little bit helps right? I mean if it's a couple hundred grams that's almost half a pound.

MacBook Air :: Liquid Metal Is Very Light Weight And Still Strong At The Same Time?

Aug 30, 2010

I read that this liquid metal is very light weight and still strong at the same time.

But wondered how it looks.. Is it glossy like stainless steel or brushed as the aluminium used on iPad and MacBook Pros? How dark is it?

There has been alot talking about a Carbon Fibre MBA, as it would take some of the weight - could this be it in stead?

OS X :: Burning Encrypted Dvd's In Toast / Program To Remove Encryption?

Dec 5, 2008

I just recently got my first mac, after getting completely fed up with Windows on plenty of pc's i took the plunge and made the switch and have zero complaints or problems thus far.

I used to burn plenty of DVD's on my pc's and my first line of business with the mac was to find a way to continue my collection. From my limited research I found out Toast was the easiest and most straightforward way to burn DVD's. I jumped on it and bought it without looking too far into it(possible mistake in the end?). went to copy a dvd and turns out it does not get through the encryption on DVD's(on current settings).

I'm looking for some help in burning encrypted dvd's. Whether it is another program to break the encryption and allow Toast to burn it, or another program altogether to do it all in

MacBook Air :: Slightly Ticker With Superdrive Or Slightly Thinner Without Superdrive?

Jul 27, 2008

I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.

I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.

MacBook Air :: Finding 13" And 15" Weight Differences

Jun 9, 2009

Looking at the new MBP 13 vs. MBA I'm thinking about why I'm interested in the MBA in the first place. The 15" isn't that much heavier than the 13". From 2.5kg to 2kg I would save about 20% weight. And get a smaller screen. Is that really worth it?

On the other hand the MBA will save about 45% weight.

MacBook Pro :: 5% Battery Loss In 4 Days?

Sep 7, 2010

I just bought my MBP, It came in on 9/3. I'm not sure if I should be concerned by this or not.

I've had the MBP for 4 days total. Watts and the System Profiler both show that I've had 6 cycles. I'm down to 5506 mAh from 5770 mAh, and I have 95% health left. If it continues at this rate, 95 days (or cycles) or so I'll be down to a useless battery. I performed a cycle 2 days ago.

I use my MBP as such - I charge it to 100%, sometimes I'll continue to use it on the charger, other times I won't. After its charged, if I leave my room with it, I won't charge it again until it gets down to 40% or less. I'll plug it in at the end of the night, and let it charge up. Sometimes I'll take it off the charger once I go to bed, other times I'll let it charge throughout the night.

I've searched around, and haven't found a similar issue. Most of the ones I see are after a few months they are having battery issues. The Battery FAQ doesn't really answer this question for me.

MacBook Pro :: Clock Time Loss After EFI Firmware Update?

Mar 22, 2012

I recently applied an EFI firmware update to my MacBook Pro 15" (early 2011), which is currently running OSX 10.7.3.  Coincidentally, my clock now loses several seconds per hour (in both sleep or screensaver mode), so after several hours, I lose about a minute.  Of course, I could manually correct the clock via System Preferences' Date/Time synchronization.  But I shouldn't be losing this much time.
