MacBook Pro :: Use Laptop As Network For External Device?

I have a credit card terminal I want to use at a farmers market and it has a phone jack and an ethernet jack. If I have my laptop connected to my iphone via the hotspot (wifi), how can I get the terminal to see the laptop as a network? I assume if I just plug it into the the lapto via ethernet cabel, it will not see any connection for use, though I have not tried this yet. Is there some sort of interface or connecter that goes between the two so I can share my connection with another piece of hardware?

My laptop and ipad was stolen. I have an icloud account, i can see my 2 iphones and the laptop but can't see my mac laptop which is the devise I used to set up the account and now I can't locate where it could be?

my daughters SLEEPING MBP has appeared on my MBP as a shared device. How is this possible if it's sleeping? Perhaps there's a good explanation for this, but I'm concerned about it. She connects via wireless to our home D-link wireless router. Wasn't sure where to ask question on boards..

I recently bought a Hp OfficeJet pro 8600 plus printer and have set it up fine on my desktop pc. When I went to install it on my MacBook it wont let me set it wirelessly because it states that The wireless network settings were successfully downloaded to your device. However, your Mac was unable to locate the device on the network.
Please make sure that:
- Your Mac is connected to a wired or wireless network that has access to your device.
- Your device is connected to the wireless network "home".
Click "Retry" to attempt to connect again using the current settings. Click "Go Back" to enter different settings. The weird part is that everything is set up fine as far as the printer it seems that the mac doesn't want to cooperate. I am running OS X Lion with the newest downloads and updated.

I keep getting a pop up saying, anotherdevice or network is using my ip adress, so im unable to get to the web. I have reset my router and airport extreme but it still keeps giving me that pop up. Do I change my IP adress and how.

I've got a rather strange thing happening...Disable ALL network interfaces, including Bluetooth, have only my Ethernet enabled, going directly to DSL modem (not router).Yet, I am picking up a computer in my network browser. I can browse this computer's shared docs just fine, and in fact, he is not setup very securely so I could easily delete his entire music and photo library or send malicious files to him (or her).
But, I am wondering how I am even seeing this device. From what I know, on a DSL connection, you should never see any other computers on that ISP. I know sometimes this will happen with Cable, but I've never seen it on DSL.How do I find the IP or MAC address of this computer? I actually work at my internet provider, and I'd like to see if I can find which customer it is and why I am picking them up on my network browser, and hopefully alleviate the problem.

I just secured the wireless router and network for my roommate the other day. When I got back in town today and tried connecting to the internet, it told me that another device on the network is using your computer's IP address. I have no idea what this means and what I have to do to fix it... any thoughts?

a macbook air and an iMac have both give the error "Another device on the network is using your IP address". They are both using the latest OSX and are both set to use DHCP assigned by my Virgin cable router.the address reported in the popup window is NOT the address that either computer was assigned at the time (the first time, I thought it was odd, and I had an iPad handy and used fing to search my network to see what device had just used that address and I didn't see anything). This time - I was on my iMac and happen to have a terminal open, so I did a quick if config - and my ip address was not the one indicated in the message (it was saying 192.168.0.8) and my address was 192.168.0.12. In fact I think that the other day it was complaining about the same .0.8 address.
I do have 2 devices that have a hard coded ip-address (but they are right at the beginning of the range, and in fact I have instructed the router to skip those addresses and just dish out ip's from .0.3 onwards). All other devices use DHCP.Â

I'm new to mac and don't have any idea on how I got this one. I already tried to restart my machine but the "ibmt61l3cv479" keeps on displaying on the Shared list. I didn't connect to any PC Servers and afraid that someone is accessing my mac.
Do you know how can I get rid of this?

How to automatically mount other Macs on the network, or if not, then post an explanation here on how to accomplish that objective?Â
For example, my Mac Pro tower has 4 disks and when I boot up all 4 disks are mounted. Then, when I turn on my Macbook Air and turn on my MacBook Pro, those laptops show up in Finder as shared. The Macbook Pro is partitioned, so it would be nice if I could specify which disk to mount in Finder.

I'm having some trouble adding network printers in Tiger. If I open the print&fax window and then click on the "+" sign to add printers, nothing comes up. I thought a new screen was supposed to pop up, but nothing happens. If I try to print something from Word or Excel and select "add printer" in the print menu, also nothing happens. I do find a list of "bonjour printers", but I'm not sure how this can help me. So in the end it seems I can't add any printers at all, and thus not print.

The internal modem in my PowerBook Pro (mid 2010) shows up as "not connected" in the Network pane of system preferences, but I can't figure out how to get it to connect. When I enter my phone number and click the connect button, I get an error message: "Network Connection The communication device selected for your connection does not exist. Verify your settings and try reconnecting."Â Say what? It says it exists in the System Preferences, shows it in the list on the left. How can it not exist?Â

I currently have 1 PC (Windows7) and 1 MBP (Snow Leopard) in the house, the PC has 2 additional HDDs attached with movies and music on them and they are in NTFS format. I can view the contents on my PC via my wireless G network on my Macbook through sharing etc. Now my problem is that I'm getting rid of the PC (hopefully for an iMac in the future) but right now what sort of device would I need to build/buy to attach the 2 NTFS HDDs to the network so my MBP can still access the media on them?

Back at my parents house, my dad had an older Linksys Wireless G router where I would be able to see all of the other WinXP computers on the network along with their associated shared folders/drives/peripherals in the 'shared' tab on Finder's left side navigation pane. Since it's old, and my father doesn't fix what isn't broken, he doesn't remember how he set that up.
I'm looking to replicate this with my WinXP desktop and early 2008 MBP. I have a WRT310N Linksys router and WinXP SP 3. I've tried nearly everything, but the ease and simplicity of my dad's set up required nothing on the Mac side, whereas I'm seeing a lot of network configuration for most other methods.
On a side note, I'm hoping this will help me wirelessly connect an external HDD so that I can back up my MBP without connecting my USB Exteranal HDD to it ever night.

My MacBook Pro doesn't get receive wifi very well in my office, but my partners PC laptop does. I know there is a way to set up internet sharing so that the PC shares its internet connection to my laptop, but I do not know how to do this.

i have been a 13" macbook user for over a year and love every moment of it.
I work on large spreadsheets daily with the laptop open and another 19" monitor. I am considering adding another monitor and keeping the laptop closed.
Is such setup possible? Have 2 screens on my desk, plugging the laptop to them, keeping it closed and working solely of the 2 external monitors?

i do not want the windows laptop to gain access to my mac but i wanna access and transfer files from the windows laptop to my mac.
im basically using my xp laptop as a downloading device.
is it something easy to set up?
what will the speed be like?
by the way i also have a firewire cable. i did connect the firewire cable to my xp laptop but the mac cant see it. something on xp came up saying it should install a software but couldnt find it when looking up on the net..
i would prefer wireless connection but if firewire is easier and much faster then yeah firewire is ok.

Could any readers recommend an affordable basic external hard drive for a macbook air, which would also serve as a back-up for my old pc laptop? I don't need it to be portable, just to serve as back-up at home, though if it doesn't escalate the price too much wireless would be a bonus. When my laptop stopped recognizing my external keyboard and mouse I searched the discussions and found an answer that has worked, but only temporarily. It was to do a PRAM reset 3 times and when I do this the keyboard and mouse work fine. But when I disconnect the mouse and keyboard and then later reconnect it will not recognize them. I have repeated the PRAM reset 3 times each time this has happened (4 times) and they work fine but then there is always a problem when I disconnect and reconnect.Â

My iMac is running out of room on the internal drive. I want to move my movies and pictures off to an external device. I am currently backing everything up using Time Machine (and Super Duper). What I would like to do is move them off but maintain redundancy in case of a drive failure (in other words mirror the external drives). I was at the Apple store today and the rep there suggested a Drobo device. It looks really cool. But, the problem is I saw a lot of negative feedback on it, including data loss which totally defeats the purpose of paying so much money for it. I'm looking for a way to basically have two 1 TB drives mirrored off of my iMac that I can put my iPhoto, iTunes and Movies onto.

I have Mac Pro with Digidesign/ProTools interface connected. I sometimes switch sound output from MP to run through the digidesign hardware. I'm getting message right now saying "selected device has no output controls", not allowing me to switch. I rebooted with the interface already turned on. I've run into theis before- can't figure out what causes this to happen. Sometimes it's OK. ?

My Macbook Pro 2.4 got force restarted a few times because it was locking up (a friend's faulty external drive I was trying to fix). It was running fine, then when I tried to connect my own external drives they wouldn't mount anymore and I got this error:
/system/..../IOStorageFamily.kext was installed improperly.
I came here and read up on common solutions. I have:
- Ran Disk utility repair and repair permissions
- Followed this article: [URL]
- In verbose and single user mode all I get is the dreaded "waiting for root device" over and over. They all have not worked so far. However in safe mode it actually boots. It seems to me that some drivers were perhaps corrupted when I turned it off abruptly and now it has trouble mounting any drive. What are my options at this point?

I have a slight problem with my volume controls on a Macbook Pro. They're not doing exactly what I want them to. I have an external sound card and by selecting it as my default audio device the macbook pros own volume control gets locked and there's no way to adjust it. This means that it renders the keyboard and Remote control volume buttons useless and I still have to run across the room to adjust the volume on my audio device when I'm watching a movie through the tv away from the macbook. Is there no way to enable this function anyway so both controls work?
