MacBook Pro :: System Switching On With Lid Closed?
Apr 11, 2012
I've noticed this twice now, when I shut down my machine I always make sure its fully powered down, I then close the lid, now normally I let the macbook charge overnight, but the system on both occasions was fully charged, so I switched off the mains supply went to sleep and in the morning switched the plug on and picked up the mbp to check my emails, now the lid was down when I picked the system up but all of the sudden the apple logo lit up and the chime sound started and the system started up, the only issue is that when you open the lid you can see the logon screen but it's to dark to see anything but I can see outlines that indicate the system is at the logon screen. I'm a tad concerned that there might be a short on the casing to the power button, but it's odd that it only does it when I suddenly power up via the mains and not when on battery power? It's an Early 2011 MBP 13" intel i5 2.3Ghz 8GB corsair RAM 120GB corsair SSD.

Tonight I upgraded my dad's macbook to Leopard, successfully. During the first login process, the software update asked me to install some updates, and that a reboot was required immediately (I imagine they were firmware related). I left the room to let the macbook do its thing and when I came back in my dad had shut the computer (not knowing I had done the firmware update thing). Long story short, I get an immediate kernel panic right away when I turn the computer on. I did not back up the data because I was only doing a system upgrade (which worked just fine!). When I boot, I do see the Apple Logo. I am able to boot into the Leopard Installation DVD. At this point, what are my options? I am only familiar with Linux and Windows advanced installations, so I don't know what is available to me.
1) Can I do a 'repair' on the firmware (or whatever is damaged?) from the DVD?
2) Am I able to do a fresh re-install of Leopard, without re-formatting the drive?
3) Does the 'Disk Utility' give me any options?

My family owns two MacBooks and an iMac. All of these computers share the same internet (a wireless Bell EWire modem (which probably doesn't tell you much...)). My MacBook and my father's iMac connect easily and have connected to the internet for as long as we have had these computers (a few years). The other MacBook has connected up until a few weeks ago (it is a year younger than my MacBook). A few weeks ago, when the MacBook was closed (put to sleep but not shut down) and reopened, the airport symbol would display a working airport and connection but when I clicked Safari, it would not connect.

After upgrading to Yosemite, I had very serious problems with fast user switching. I do software development using my BackBook Pro, I need to switch between different accounts for testing/debugging purposes.
As long as I use fast switching, I will eventually have a system hang when logging out, login or shutting down. I either got blank screens, or dead login screen. In the end, I had to press the power button for 3 seconds to do a brute cold power off.

I have an 13" MBP that I ordered new in April, 2012. It is running Lion. I have an external monitor that is capable of 1440x900 resolution. I have an external keyboard and trackpad hooked up, and I like to close my MBP up and stick it in a BookArc. I want to be able to have the internal display disabled and to have the MBP only allow me to put windows on the external display, so long as the lid is closed. I also want to be sure that I am taking advantage of the resolutions available on my external monitor, which are higher than those supported by the internal display (specifically 1440x900).
This doesn't seem to work because I either have to allow the MBP to continue to draw my desktop across both screens (internal and external), OR use the "mirror displays" mode, which restricts my resolution of my external monitor. This means I either forgoe the additional resolution benefits of my external monitor, or I end up with windows that fall off-the-cliff, so to speak, because they are drawn in the portion of the desktop that would be shown on my internal display (which is closed).
I've read the community support pages on using the MBP with an external monitor, most relevantly, this page. It simply recommends using the "mirror displays" option. However, this option, as I mentioned above, doesn't allow me to make use of the additional resolution, and my external display looks bad. how to keep the 13" MBP in closed clamshell position, with the internal display disabled, and use my external monitor at resolutions higher than those allowed by the 13" MBP but which are available to my external monitor when not in "mirror displays" mode?

I am wondering that is it essential to connect power adaptor all the time while operating in closed calmshell mode? When I unpluged the cable it didn't work. Is there some way?

I have a late 2008 unibody macbook connected to a brand new Samsung monitor via a displayport to DVI cable and everything works great until I shut my macbook. The external monitor continues to work fine but my wireless seems to lose connection, my desk is approximately 15 feet from a wireless repeater and Airport appears to have a full signal but it will act as if there is a bad connection until I open my macbook back up and then the internet works fine.
I was talking to a friend and he mentioned that some displayport to DVI cables do not have sufficient shielding therefore interfering with the wireless signal but if that was the issue it should be effecting the wireless signal at all times, not just when the macbook is closed.

On every MB I've used since they first came out, you could hook the audio and video up, close the lid, and if it went into sleep mode, the Apple Remote would trigger a "wake up" for mediacenter purposes on a TV/stereo. My SR MB w/ 10.5 doesn't do it. As soon as the lid closes, it's asleep no matter how I toggle the view between screen and external port. Front Row doesn't wake it anymore. Anyone else having this problem? I wanted to find out before calling and asking.

I am using my MacBook with the lid closed, mainly as a desktop. I plan to run Handbrake to rip DVDs. It takes hours and fan is on constantly. Will the heat dissipate better with the lid closed or open? The vent seems to be on the back and I can feel the heat venting out with the lid closed.

I just connected my 15" MacBook Pro to an external monitor and purchased a keyboard for my MacBook. I also attach a mouse to my MacBook. When I close the lid completely the MacBook stops displaying on my external monitor. Is there a system preference or something else that I can change to prevent this from happening? I'm hoping to use my MacBook as my desktop too.

I started downloading a trailer on iTunes at my College, then my Calculus professor showed up. So I closed my MBP, and it went into sleep mode. After class, I opened the book back up to notice that the download had finished! Is it possible that it downloaded this while it was asleep? That would be useful during our finals. I could get Portal for steam using the schools internet while taking my tests.

My MacBook Air was closed (which I assume means asleep) and in my bag. Today I suddenly heard a weird hum from the bag and realized that the Airport was incredibly hot and blowing all fans full speed. Of course it was inside a padded bag so there was no air to move around and things got very hot. I have no idea how long it was in there but it could have been days (it was attached to charger cable).
1) is it likely to be damaged? any way to know?
2) any way to figure out why it woke up while closed? is there a log anywhere of that kind of thing? yesterday we had a power outage; could the Airport being cycled off/on somehow woken it up via wifi??
3) how do I prevent it from happening again - how do I shut off any possible options that might lead it to ever wake up while the lid is closed? I heard there's something called Wake on Demand and there is also some mode where people use them (with an external monitor) with the lid closed. I'd like to disable both

My logic board broke on my 07 mbp and i decided to buy a new 15" i7 anti glare 7200rpm. My question is how should i go about getting my files onto my new computer. I have a time machine backup, will it let me just install that onto my new computer? If so, do I want to do this or will that cause problems since its a different machine.

So for awhile I was following all of the to do about the GPU switching. Eventually I figured I would just deal with it and check back a month or so down the road. So since I've been out of the loop I was wondering if anybody can update me?
I've been using gfxcardstatus and it is very useful but would love to apple to just give us an update.

I have a mid-09 13" MBP. I just bought a display (dell U2311H), wireless apple kb and magic trackpad, with the intention to use just the external display and kb/trackpad, and stow my MBP away to save some space. Everything works fine when my MBP's lid is open. But once it is closed (or nearly closed), WiFi disconnects. I don't think it has anything to do with my wireless router, but more to do with some MBP setting.

So I have a friend with a MBP that puts the wiping cloth that came with the computer over the track pad and keyboard before he closes the screen. I just got my first MBP and starting doing this myself, but not over the keys just folded over the track pad. I do this because easy storage of the wipe...I guess. Anyways, will this cause screen damage, overheating, or anything else that I should know about?

This is my first mac notebook and i'm pretty puzzled on whats going on. First night with my new macbook air 13".. installed basic apps and parallels for a windows vm. I was having issues connecting to my NAS so i rebooted.. appeared to be taking forever to reboot so i closed the lid. An hour later opening the lid.. no response.. power button.. no response.. any ideas what's going on? Is there a way to hard reset it? I tried it on power and on battery with no luck..
edit: of course.. as I post this.. i try once again to press the power button.. it powers up fine.. still curious if this is a common issue..
