View 9 RepliesHas anyone heard if OS X SL will allow on-the-fly switching between graphics systems in MBP (without having to log in/out)?
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo, with Snow Leopard, there is a 32-bit kernel, and a 64-bit kernel. Correct?
As I understand it, it will boot into the 32-bit kernel by default, but if your hardware is supported, you can select the 64-bit kernel.
My question is - where is the list of supported hardware, and how do you select the 64-bit kernel?
My confusion comes from several posts and various articles which all say the first-gen aluminium iMac has a 32-bit EFI, and therefore can only boot into the 32-bit kernel. But I've just downloaded an app called Startup Mode Selector, which shows you your system config, and it says I have a 64-bit EFI.
I am running a macbook only a couple of months old so i go the cheap as chips dvd for SL Installed it and things seem fine except the fun that office 2008 wont load at all (gotta love MS) Now though i can not authenticate myself to change accounts in preferences even though i am the only user and i am the admin user. i click on the lock and it simply saying "authenticating" then goes back to "click lock to change settings" this is annoying as i cant do much in terms of users etc and i think this is lnked to the fact that i can't install not programs. In fact i couldn't even install the additional programs from the install DVD!!! i got to the final button to actually instal after selecting the location etc and it does nothing after clicking install. No password prompt or nothing.

He keeps having wireless problems because he likes to play with it and whenever one of his dam sites wont load he thinks its the computers fault and messes it up. Is there anyway to remove the wifi icon from the menu bar and lock access to system prefs and anything else that he casn use to destroy the computer? I looked at parental controls and they dident do what i wanted.

I tend to just leave my new Mac Pro on all the time so I don't have to re-open apps and get all my windows back into their proper Spaces, but I wonder if there's an easy way to disable the internet while I'm not using it, short of disconnecting the ethernet cable. I've looked through System Prefs and can't seem to find that option.

Ever since updating to OS X 10.7.3 I can't get my Internet Sharing to function for wifi. I enable this to use my iPod at home. The computer 'says' Internet Sharing is on but my iPod searches and doesn't find a signal. Plus, the four bars at the top right of the screan do not change to a solid color with the arrow pointing up like it used to when enabled and working.

When I go to System Preferences >> Language & Text >> Language Tab, I see a language which is in there.Yet, when I go to the Input Sources tab, that language is not listed and so I cant use it.How do I get the language into the Input Sources tab if it's not there?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI believe I've researched enough posts here on Apple Discussions to tell me that what I want to do is possible, but I want to confirm it before I take some irrevocable action. So, first I'll describe what I want to do, then my understanding of how to do it, and then ask my questions. I want to keep my mac.com email functionality for my primary account, my aliases, and my email-only accounts—all of which use mac.com addresses. For now, I don't care about contacts, calendars, bookmarks, or any other syncing except mail server syncing with my SeaMonkey mail client on multiple Snow Leopard Macs.I can't install Lion (yet) on all of my Snow Leopard computers. I have some software compatibility issues that have yet to be resolved, and one machine (Macbook Pro Core Duo) isn't compatible with Lion at all.I have several IMAP and POP mail accounts that forward to my primary mac.com address, and I would like that to continue. It's my understanding that I can log into my MobileMe account, select the "Not all devices meet requirements" option, agree to the iCloud Terms of Service, and then click the Move to iCloud button to use Apple's mail services with iCloud after MobileMe ends. Here are my questions:Will the move to iCloud work as described?Do I need to claim I have Lion installed on all devices? (I don't.)Will all of my existing mac.com email-only accounts and aliases continue to work after I move to iCloud? (I seem to recall reading somewhere that the paid-for email-only accounts will work, but the aliases wont...but I'm not certain that's correct.)Will I have full access to all iCloud features on any Mac on which Lion is installed?I currently have some web content hosted on my iDisk, and I understand that the iDisk will disappear on July 1. Is there some equivalent functionality in iCloud, wherein iCloud will host browser-based web content? That doesn't appear to be the case, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Yes you read that right. Your brand spanking new MBP will use a 32-bit kernel as default.
You can force 64-bit kernel but some of your hardware will not be working.
So all that marketing crap about the benefits of 64-bit etc are all B.S.
I don't want a million threads about how this will not effect the running of 64 bit apps, etc. because it will. Your 64-bit app will run but it will not be able to address more than 4Gb of RAM.
There are also many more advantages to having a 64-bit kernel.
I recently changed my Apple ID. When I try to make changes to my iCloud account on my Mac., I cannot access the account via System Preferences. I've changed the password once already. My iPhone's iCloud account is fine. At this point my iCloud account no longer is working with my Mac.

I own a 2009 Macbook Pro. I was just wondering 2 things about Snow Leopard:
How does it manage video card switching?
Does it allow SLI?
Where do I switch graphic processors in Snow Leopard on my late '08 uniMBP?
It used to be in the "Energy Saver" area but, I had to log out and then back in again to activate the change. Is there something I'm missing here?
I have a MBP Classic (early 08) and I've noticed that the battery life seems to have dropped ever since I switched to SL. I should have conducted a more scientific experiment just before the switch, but I didn't, so I can't be sure. Is anyone else having a similar experience with Snow Leopard?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe installer from this DVD will not launch on my Mac Mini. The store I bought it from won't let me return it so I'm stuck with it. Is there anything I can do to get this damn thing to work? I get a black screen after it huffs and puffs and then dies.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis article gave me a little bit more understand and also made me feel better that either booting in 32bit or 64bit kernel will not make a huge difference due to hardware limitation.

I've noticed this twice now, when I shut down my machine I always make sure its fully powered down, I then close the lid, now normally I let the macbook charge overnight, but the system on both occasions was fully charged, so I switched off the mains supply went to sleep and in the morning switched the plug on and picked up the mbp to check my emails, now the lid was down when I picked the system up but all of the sudden the apple logo lit up and the chime sound started and the system started up, the only issue is that when you open the lid you can see the logon screen but it's to dark to see anything but I can see outlines that indicate the system is at the logon screen. I'm a tad concerned that there might be a short on the casing to the power button, but it's odd that it only does it when I suddenly power up via the mains and not when on battery power? View 5 Replies View RelatedIn the process of doing clean install from tiger to leopard and I'm running into some issue. 1st attempt - was stuck on initial "Install" screen (After I erased my HD and selected drive to install but before the Install screen changes to show the status of the install remaining) for 35 minutes. I stopped the install and restated.2nd attempt - Finally got to the progress bar, 28 minutes remaining. However, it didn't move from there. I checked the Installer Log and it kept trying to install printer drivers and foreign fonts, but unsuccessful. Finally got an error message stating install was not complete. Restart.3rd. attempt - This time I unchecked printer drivers and fonts. Progress bar stated 18 minutes, now it's down to 17 (after like 10 minutes) and according to the Installer Log I keep getting errors in stuff (Error writing caches to /Volume/...., Input/output error, Failed to enumerate /Volumes/...., Cannot prune("com.apple.user*pictureCache*"). However, according to the progress bar, it keeps moving through the processes, still show 18 minutes now.
