I have a mid-09 13" MBP. I just bought a display (dell U2311H), wireless apple kb and magic trackpad, with the intention to use just the external display and kb/trackpad, and stow my MBP away to save some space. Everything works fine when my MBP's lid is open. But once it is closed (or nearly closed), WiFi disconnects. I don't think it has anything to do with my wireless router, but more to do with some MBP setting.
View 6 RepliesI recently set up my new macbook pro with an Apple Cinema Display. The setup is great except that my wifi connection only works when my MBP is open. The second I close the screen the connection stops working. It's not a proximity issue since it works just fine when it's open.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a house that is not ideal for wifi. In particular, my office is an extension off the kitchen which has a solid brick wall between it and the rest of the house. Through 2 airport extremes, i get great wireless N signal everywhere in the house except this office. So, i added a 'N' airport express at the base of the stairs to this office and 'extended' the network.
So, i have 2 macbook pros up here. One is running on batteries, sitting on my desk, lid open. It is showing a rate of 108, signal -66 and noise -88 in the advanced wireless clients section of the airport express which it is getting it's signal from.
The next is closed and connected to a LED 24" cinema display. It is right next to the other MBP. It is showing a rate of 41, signal -80 and noise -93.
Why such a huge difference? Would it be because the lid is closed, it is connected to the display or a faulty macbook?
MacBook. 2Ghz Intel Core Duo. OS Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I'm running a 2006 MacBook with Snow Leopard. A few months back it started dropping wifi connection. Airport would show no connection but would list my network along with others in my building. If I tried to connect with my WPA password it would just time out. At this time I was running Leopard.
Since then I've done a few things.Tried running the Netgear router with no encryption at all (same thing happens). Will lose connection and then time out trying to connect
I've tried the MacBook in a coffee shop with wifi access and at my parents (same NetGear router) and at my new apartment with a horrible Orange Livebox.
Taken the MacBook in to see the genius bar at Glasgow Apple store. Worked fine for them, but I explained it was intermittent but we could not force it to fail. I'm sure if it ran for an hour it would.
At present if I have the MacBook in the living room (where the Livebox router is situated) its fine and wont drop connection. If I walk some 5m to my bedroom it will work for approximately half and hour and then lose it. A few days ago I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and installed it last night. MacBook runs a hell of a lot faster (yay!) but moving it away from the router and its dead as disco in half an hour.
So to clarify, the MacBook has been tested on 4 wifi networks/ locus with same issue. iPhone, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have no issues with dropping connection no matter where they are in the apartment.
Apartment is a new build and its walls are not made out of lead or kryptonite. Is this a hardware issue rather than software? When updating to Snow Leopard it was an update to the existing OS of Leopard not a clean install.
AIRPORT says the following in System Profiler.

The external 19" LCD display does not work with the lid closed. However, it does work in full 1680x1050 when mirroring is turned off and the lid is open. When I turn mirroring on and the lid is open, the external display does not work at full 1680x1050, it shrinks the external view so the resolution is 1680x1050 but only displays 1280x800 worth of pixels.
Summary:
* lid closed, mirroring on, external display does not work (goes into "out of range" mode)
* lid closed, mirroring off, external display does not work (goes into "out of range" mode)
* lid open, mirroring on, external display will not do a full 1680x1050, instead will do 1280x800
* lid open, mirroring off, external display will do a full 1680x1050
A USB keyboard and mouse are attached. This exact setup worked flawlessly with a gen1 macbook pro out of the box.
How do I make the display work with the lid closed?
I am wanting to sync my 360 with my macbook pro wirelessly. I still haven't decided which program yet, but am leaning towards Rivet for the file structure, but I think Connect360 has more file support.
Anyway, I was wondering if I will have to keep my macbook open for these programs to work. Or if I will be able to access them if my macbook is put away but still on. Or if I can make it so that it doesn't go into sleep mode when I close it so its still running just the screen is closed.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an 13" MBP that I ordered new in April, 2012. It is running Lion. I have an external monitor that is capable of 1440x900 resolution. I have an external keyboard and trackpad hooked up, and I like to close my MBP up and stick it in a BookArc. I want to be able to have the internal display disabled and to have the MBP only allow me to put windows on the external display, so long as the lid is closed. I also want to be sure that I am taking advantage of the resolutions available on my external monitor, which are higher than those supported by the internal display (specifically 1440x900).
This doesn't seem to work because I either have to allow the MBP to continue to draw my desktop across both screens (internal and external), OR use the "mirror displays" mode, which restricts my resolution of my external monitor. This means I either forgoe the additional resolution benefits of my external monitor, or I end up with windows that fall off-the-cliff, so to speak, because they are drawn in the portion of the desktop that would be shown on my internal display (which is closed).
I've read the community support pages on using the MBP with an external monitor, most relevantly, this page. It simply recommends using the "mirror displays" option. However, this option, as I mentioned above, doesn't allow me to make use of the additional resolution, and my external display looks bad. how to keep the 13" MBP in closed clamshell position, with the internal display disabled, and use my external monitor at resolutions higher than those allowed by the 13" MBP but which are available to my external monitor when not in "mirror displays" mode?

It sometimes loads things like google reader or google searches but i cant look at google images or anything. Everyone else just loads safari or the equivalent and enters an email address and they can browse. Mine does that but then stops and starts working every so often.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI reformatted my macbook pro with Snow Leopard installed about half a week ago and it has stopped connecting to our wifi. The icon it shows for wifi is no bars with a '!'. It sees our Internet in the menu bar but fails to connect properly. I have tried resetting the PRAM, that does nothing. All other computers in the house can connect to it. I've tried turning the laptop, airport and our house's Internet off and on again. None of this has worked. Any ideas?
View 1 Replies View RelatedEver since updating to OS X 10.7.3 I can't get my Internet Sharing to function for wifi. I enable this to use my iPod at home. The computer 'says' Internet Sharing is on but my iPod searches and doesn't find a signal. Plus, the four bars at the top right of the screan do not change to a solid color with the arrow pointing up like it used to when enabled and working.

1. tried deleting Airport and then re-adding then clicking apply. Worked the very first time I tried this and it has only worked twice since.
2. tried allowing all incoming connections, worked once now problem still persists.
3. Tried re-starting router, this has never worked
4. There was a post about deleting a file, the person said they were instructed by apple care to do this, that didn't work either.
- Seems to only do this when the computer is on sleep mode
- everything else in the house connects fine to the internet
- this problem does not only happen in my house, it happens at coffee shops etc
- sometimes it is able to connect via tethering off my iphone
- this was a problem 2 years ago on this computer, then it was fine for 2 years and now it's back!

I have got a macbook pro and an iPhone5 .. my macbook and my iPhone connected to the same WiFi but for some reason the airplay don't work .. so I tried to use a (cable) goes from the router to the macbook .. and i turned on (sharing internet) so my macbook can become a WiFi .. from that my iPhone is connected to the WiFi (macbook pro WiFi) and the airplay was working fine .. the thing is i don't like the cable idea because my router on the first floor and my macbook on the second floor.. so any one have any tips for me .. by the way i need the airplay because i was streaming using (Reflector)

Does anyone know how accurate the 2010 macbook pro wifi signal strength monitor is? There are times I have full bars but my internet is really slow, or stops working all together for a few minutes. I THINK, because I'm on a different floor than the router, which would explain reduced signal. BUT my computer says I have full bars.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently got FIOS and I love it. My router is in my basement because I wanted to hardwire it into my ps3 and 360. Regardless, the WiFi signal is great throughout my house. For some reason, my Macbook keeps grabbing my neighbors unprotected WiFi signal. I guess on the 2nd floor of my house, his signal is stronger than mine.
It takes 2 seconds to switch it back, but it seems to grab it whenever I wake it from sleep and at other random times. I was thinking of telling my neighbor that he needs to protect his signal, but even if I dont, I want a way to prevent my mac from locking onto the wrong signal.

When i'm about and about during my day it is very tough to get WiFi, or at least to connect to it and get online.
@ my friends house I can't go online, even though i have this password and says connected. I've tried using diagnostics but in the end am not connected. @ another friends house the same situation. @ Starbucks and McDonalds it won't connect as well....but at home it always connects.
I have a G5 Mac Pro tower vintage somewhere around 2004-5 and I need to be able to access a WiFi hot spot. Will a usb adapter do the trick and if so what is good one? I understand it is too dificult to install an Airport Extreme card unless done by a technician.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am having major issues trying to get my TC to work with an existing wireless network. I am using a Macbook and an iMac, having just upgraded both macs to snow leopard. I connected the TC to a BTVOYAGER wireless router using an ethernet cable, turned on airport and it worked fine for a few hours. Then, suddenly lost internet connection. Other PC's connected just to the BTVOYAGER also lost connection to the internet, although were still connected to the router.
After much troubleshooting, after removing the tc from the equation managed to re-establish internet connection on the windows PCs. However, when connecting the macbook to the btvoyager (not using time capsule at all) the internet connection was lost on all computers. disconnecting the mac and resetting the router brought back the connection.
I am ignoring the time capsule completely at the moment until I can get btvoyager to work again with my macs. I am able to connect to public wifi, so know that the airport on the mavbook is working ok. I have also turned off IPv6 configuration as I am not sure the BTvoyager is compatible with v6.
all other settings on aiport seem to be ok and it will connect to the btvoyager network, just not to the internet. and nothing else will either!
