MacBook Pro :: Software Update Restarts Computer Without Installing?
Apr 25, 2012
Whenever I try to install my software updates manually, I get the screen saying I must restart my computer after the updates are installed. However, when I click on 'Install and Restart' the computer immediately restarts without installing any of the updates. This has happened repeatedly.

Every time I try to install the latest version of leopard when the computer restarts it's self and it starts to "Configure installation", it freezes. I really don't think it should take OVER 12 hours to STILL be "Configuring". I called Apple, and the representative told me that I might need to install safari, but, it won't let me. Heh, I don't know what the problem is. I have an iMac G5 with 57.21 GB on my it. Does anyone know of any solution for this issue?

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that I recently updated to 10.9.4. The computer randomly restarts every once in a while and gives me an error when it reboots saying that there was an issue. When I log in, I choose to report the issue to Apple and it shows me what it will send. I see that it says there was a GPU Panic, which I have seen on other mid-2010 MacBook Pros after updating to 10.9. The computer now is restarting within 10 minutes of me logging into it, rendering it completely useless. Â Â
I will not tolerate a $1,500 computer restarting every 10 minutes because of an error on Apple's part. They allowed me to upgrade without giving me any sort of a warning that bad things could happen. Â Â

I've just upgraded to 10.6.1 from leopard. Whilst on leopard I had no problems at all with my Macbook Pro (Early 2008, 2.5Ghz) and for the most part snow leopard seems to work pretty well. However I'm having some issues with sleep. To start with my computer wouldn't even shut down properly after installing snow leopard; it would shut down for 3-4 seconds and then restart of it's own accord.
I've tried a few solutions that I've seen in forums for people with similar problems (such as reset PRAM, SMC, repairing permissions and deleting certain PLIST files) and now my mac will properly shut down, but still not sleep correctly. Now my mac will only sleep if it is on battery power and I activate sleep by closing the lid, if I activate it in the menu or if the power cord is connected (by any method of activating sleep) then my mac will sleep then 3 seconds later turn back on. As far as I'm aware I've got no programs that are causing this and I have turned all network and bluetooth 'wake' demands off. I also have nothing connected to my mac.

I'm having trouble installing a brand-new copy of Snow Leopard onto my Macbook. It loads just fine, and I'm able to start the installation. Halfway through the process, the computer restarts itself and cancels the installation. Occassionally I get a warning sign from the installation program that says it can't read the disk and that it needs to be cleaned. The disc is brand new and isn't scratched so i'm not sure why it's giving me that warning. Anything I can do to fix this or do I need to get the disc replaced?

I used to work on Windows normally without any problem but recently when I press the switch button on the mac so I can choose the Windows HD my computer restarts, it tries to load windows but ends restarting, I thought that maybe the partition died or something but I can see that everything is still in it's place ( From mac I click on Windows HD and I still see it's content)

For the last few months, my MP has had a strange quirk. When I select Shutdown, the computer restarts instead. Then, at the login screen, I select shutdown and it will then turn off. I've tried disconnecting all USB and Firewire connections (except keyboard and mouse) with the same results. It does seem to be time related. For example, if I start up the computer, get to the desktop and then shutdown, it turns off no problem. However, after its been running for a bit it will do the restart thing instead.

I've been using my MacBookPro (1.83ghz) for 3 days, and today it began acting funky. It has spontaneously restarted about 10 times today. It restarted itself about 4 times in 10 minutes just now. Twice it has restarted as soon as the previous restart completed, before any programs have been launched, and with no peripherals plugged in. Other times it has spontaneously restarted with only Safari open, and with Illustrator CS open. Any ideas about what might be happening? Anyone had this issue? Could this be related to software? Or the 1 gig RAM module I installed?

I have a problem with my windows partition. Every time it boots the blue beam stops in the middle and a blue screen appears, which I can't read because it disappears too fast. And than the computer restarts again. I also tried the safe mode but it didn't help either. So my question is: Can I fix windows from my mac partition?

After the update, my MacBook Pro is extermely sluggish. Prior to the update, I was zipping along like most happy MacBook Pro owners. After the update, I constantly see the dreaded beach ball when doing almost anything with the laptop, Safari pages take longer to load, etc.
It's almost as if the udpate had the opposite effect and actually throttled down my WD 500GB HDD performance to a large degree.
Like I said, prior to the update all was good. I've been searching to see if there is a way to revert back to the previous firmware to validate that the update caused the problem but I haven't been successfull in finding anything yet.

I've been having an issue trying to install the recent MacBook Air EFI Firmware update version 2.9.1. I have attempted the following:Â
- Installing update via the App Store
- Installing update via Software Downloads from Apple website
- Verifying boot drive using Disk Utility and fixing and partition errors, as well as checking and fixing any permission errors.Â

I installed the latest update 10.7.4. After the nice progress bar finished, I just get a nice Apple logo and a spinning wheel of death. Rebooting gives me a new progress bar and a new spinning wheel of death. OPTION-start does not really help, since there is no DVD drive on the MacBook Air Core2 to reboot from.Â

I had to force it down during the installation cause in hang up. When I tried a restart the grey screen comes up as usually and the small wheel spins underneath. It spins for hrs. I tried the safe mode but it shows that all is good with the HD. Bootcamp works normally as I am writing from that part right now.

Just bought a new SSD I plan to swap into my MacBook pro (mid 2010 6.2). I plan on clean installing osx Lion and thought I would try to make the installation go as smoothly as possible by updatingthe firmware, if needed, on both the new drive and the MacBook pro.
-Model: MacBook Pro 6,2 (mid 2010) - 15" i5 2.4ghz
-Current Boot ROM: MBP61.0057.B0C
I'm wondering if I need to wait until os x Lion is installed before I install this update? Perhaps it will automatically via "software update" after Lion is installed. It looks like the fix is pertains to osx Lion functionality, so maybe it would've already been downloaded via software update if Lion was installed as opposed to snow leopard which is what I have currently. The article says " If you are unsure whether your computer needs a particular update, simply download and open the update installer. The installer will alert you if the firmware update is already installed or not needed." Which update installer are they referring to and where can I get it? I thought it'd be better to update the firmware prior to installing the os, but maybe that's just an old habit I picked upnwhile using windows.

The last two Apple software updates seemed to have screwed up my computer. After downloading and installing the last one (which included an update to iTunes), I could not turn on iTunes - it just made my computer freeze up.I could not shut it down the regular way.So I pressed the power button for 5 seconds, which turned the computer off finally. Then let it sit for 30 seconds. And when I went to turn it on - the computer got to the gray screen and just hung there.I finally had to press the power button for 5 seconds to shut it down so I could hook up my external hard drives and boot from there.Tried to see if I could boot from the internal HD it froze again. Tried to run Disk Utility, which recongized the hard drive under the name I gave it and it was mounted. After running Disk Utility, the internal drive is no longer showing up on my desktop. It does show up in Disk Utility and in Drive Genius but will not mount.I should also mention that my keyboard and trackpad stopped working after the last update.I have been using an auxiliary keyboard and trackball for years, and have no problem with them now.
