MacBook Pro :: Computer Crashed During Software Update
Feb 22, 2012
Currently using OS X Lion, started the latest software update and computer crashed during the update. I forced the computer to turn off, but when I turn it on, it returns to the same "crashed" condition (grey screen with an apple logo in the center, plus the time symbol spinning).
I was trying to setup a partition via bootcamp to install windows 7 and I got the error msg that is grey and all different languages that says to shut down. I was so scared I would loose my data b/c I haven't back up in like 6 months.
I have a 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro, one of the Santa Rosa models with the 8600M GT. It's run perfectly for nearly two years - up until about two weeks ago. Since then, it's experienced three pretty drastic system-wide crashes. Each time, the screen flashes white three times and freezes, requiring a hard reset - the mouse still moves, but the computer doesn't recognize any input. Curiously, each time I've reset, the computer has had an instant kernel panic at the white boot screen with the Apple logo, requiring another hard reset. After this it's booted fine.
Each time I've had a reasonable amount of stuff running - Safari with, say, 15 tabs, Quicksilver, Ableton Live 8, Newsfire, iTunes, iCal - but nothing excessive. I can't really make head or tail of the panic logs, but each of them seem similar, and all mention kernel extensions com.apple.NVDAResman and com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily repeatedly. I've also had a couple other occasions where vertical lines have flashed down the screen momentarily. Am I right in thinking this is all most likely related to the graphics card starting to die?
Just did Software Update from Apple and it crashed severely. Now it will not boot-up. I had the fading down screen with a message saying to hold down the on Button to reboot but it will not, it starts up with the same massage. It also comes up with some and more of the info below, whatever it means?
Panic CPU 0 <Panic> Unable to find perform text scan: Debugger called <Panic> Can't perform text scan: SD process name corresponding to correct thread MAC OS Version: Not yet set.
I also updated a Mac Mini and iMac with no problems.
Info: MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
Allright so my girlfriend accidentally spilled a drink on her macbook the other day. We thought we had cleaned it off and everything was fine. We were mistaken. During normal usage the computer crashed so we restarted it and are now greeted upon startup with a gray screen and a gray application folder with a question mark on it flashing repeatedly. What is the course of action guys? I'm not computer whiz and I'm wondering if we can fix this ourselves without having to take it in for repair. And FYI she does not have apple care
While trying to restart after downloading an iTunes update, my computer won't go past the grey screen with the apple and loading bar. When I hit command+s it says my system bootstrapper crashed. I've repaired the disk and disk permissions and it still won't load.
I have my 17" MBP besides me when it pronated me to restart after a software update. I am working in my other mac pro. Then I see the MBP with the blue screen for a while with no sign of activity. I press the power button, goes black and that is it. It won't want to start up again. The hard drive tries to read or something inside moves just once and that is it. Is not the hard drive broken, there is not reason and is not the sound of a broken drive, it sounds like the optical drive too. But the thing is that there is not activity, no sound of any sort. I disconnected the battery, unplugged the machine, power up, reconnect the battery and power and nothing. Is dead. The power light is on. It seems the software update did something to the computer. It has been on my desk for a week with Skype and messenger mostly.
After finding some things going wrong with my system such as Wineserver and Java I suspect to not be working correctly as I attemped to play Minecraft (Uses Java) and League of Legends for the Mac otherwise known as iLoL (Uses Wine) I decided maybe it was for the best to update the OS as some updates might have "borked" some code up.
I originally tried to update to 10.7.4 with the software update button found in the apple menu, but after updating it said it had failed after restarting to install the software with the error of "The installer encountered an error that caused the installer to fail, contact the software manufacturer for assistance" Leaving me with 10.7.3, I have tried repairing my disk permissions but that did not work neither did reinstalling 10.7.3 as it had the same error or restarting my computer all the same. But I did find this informative log in my console, if only I could understand it as I'm not the most technilogicily advanced person ever but I do enjoy software development, anyhow here is the log that I discovered in my console.
My roommate just lost his data, so I realized I needed to back up. I plugged in an external hard drive (it was an internal that we put into casing bought from OWC, if that matters). I wasn't thinking about Time Machine but it displayed a message, so I said yes, backup onto the hard drive. Then while it was backing up I was just reading a document, the machine crashed. I swiveled my desk to get something and this caused the external hard drive to fall, for a second it was dangling from the USB. (I'm not sure if that's relevant but.)
I first restart (held down the power button), since nothing was happening. At that point the hard drive was making a weird rhythmic clicking sound. Then it wouldn't start up! I tried this twice. Blank gray screen. I reset the PRAM (was that a bad idea?) and when it started again, I get a folder icon with a blinking question mark, over a gray background. Then I freaked out because this was what happened to my roommate, so I haven't touched the computer since.
What could have gone wrong? What to do now? (Local help centers only open on Monday..) Is it worth it to take a train for an hour to go to an apple store right now?
I was uploading some video from my camera to iphoto when my computer crashed. I turn it back on and everything I had in itunes Apps, music, movies, etc. is now gone (over 120 movies and 15,000 songs and 300 playlists) the files are still on my computer thankfully but what is the fastest and easiest way to get that stuff back into itunes? Also where are my app files they are not in the "mobile applications" folder in my itunes file folders? I have everything backed up on time machine but this really pisses me off anyone know where I can start?
I asked a previous question (don't know whether you can see the last ticket as it is now closed) when my imac suddenly crashed and wouldn't boot. The problem seemed to be resolved by typing /sbin/fsck/ -fy after pressing Apple + S after powering up. All seemed to be working fine except EyeTV wouldn't load/
I assumed it was the usb stick that caused it as the light wouldn't even appear and have purchased a new version. Receiving it i still seem to be having the same problem. Most times it crashes with only the icon bouncing in the dock then disappearing. Although i did manage to load it once and get through the eyetv setup stages with a live picture in the background although it then crashed after i closed the setup window and now can't get anywhere again
The report window comes up and gives this information, don't know if it means anything to you:
Another point is that i can't seem to reset permissions in disk utility. It starts and comes up saying estimated time less than a minute but then freezes
Just wondered what i should do as it seems to be a fault with the imac now and i really haven't got a clue how to get it going (if it's even possible).
My old iMac desktop with Tiger OS installed crashed. I couldn't reboot. I tried the Hardware checkout I got with my MacBook and everything passed. I tried to start-up from the Tiger install disk--but couldn't. So, I went to my old 9.2 OS install disk and was able to startup. Problem is that it didn't let me do anything. I couldn't see my hard drive or attempt any kind of repair. I also can now not eject the system disk. What do I do to first get the 9.2 OS install disk out of my computer and then how do I retrieve my system? I thought I would try rebooting from my MacBook OS X install disk, which I probably should have tried before the 9.2 OS.
I ran an update two days ago (Nov 30, 2009) for iTunes and Safari. The iTunes update installed, but the Safari update failed. Now none of the main Mac software will run, including Update, Mail, Safari, or iTunes. The icons just bounce once and do not proceed with the application. Thank goodness for Firefox.
What should I do? I've downloaded the MaxOSXUpdCombo10.4.11PPC.dmg today, but can't run it. I've already tried to run the auto update through Utility Terminal, and while it said it was updating I'm still not getting anything to open. I tried deleted the Safari phist and and History files from Library Preferences, but that didn't help.
I ran Disk Utility to Verify Disk Permissions and Repair, and everything ran without any error messages. Interestingly, when I click on either of the two disk icons (149.1 GB ST3160023As) and (Macintosh HD), neither will allow the Repair Disk icon on Disk Utility to work, it stays shaded.
I again ran Disk Utility and this time clicked on the top Disk Drive and then clicked "Verify Disk". A window popped up saying "First Aid Failed - Disk Utility stopped verifying Macintosh HD because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure to exit"
Below this, here's what Disk Utility Reported:

Please help. Honestly, all I did was run auto update. I have the original system disks, and can run them if someone shows me how to fix this, as long as I'm not risking all my photos and files, etc. Yes, I should buy an external drive, will do.
So I got my mac fixed and I picked it up from apple store, when I was restoring I messed with the external as I was restoring and stopped it in the middle. So I don't have a snow leopard disk or any disk with me. If I borrowed a leopard disk could I restore? I want to restore completely from the day my computer crashed.
Two days ago my iBook G4 1Ghz started to have a big problem in turning it on: when I pushed the power button the fan started to whirl speedier than usual and nothing happened. The monitor stayed turned off and the startup "Boeing" did not sound. I tried to reset the PMU and the PRAM several times and the iBook finally turned on (I still don't know why!). I did a hardware test and no problems were detected.
Then, I connected my connection Ethernet cable and the computer crashed down. Now I am in the same situation that I've just described: I can't turn the computer on anymore and the fan starts wheeling. I also showed this problem to a local Apple center and they told me that the motherboard is dead. I am still not convinced, because one time I have been able to restart the iBook. Is the motherboard really broken?
I've been reading this site for a couple of years, this is my first time typing.
Computer crashed, nothing is accessable, at the advice of my nearest mac dealer, I did an erase and restore with my system disks, but now itunes says "all the music for my account has already been downloaded."
my computer has recently crash due to a game call leaque of legends. During the game, the game has crash, some awful sound occurred and I just force shut down. My Mac, after that my Mac occurred the no entry sign which stands for 1 hour or so.
Installed MSOffice on my MBP with SL already installed. Office immediately wants to be updated with a "critical update" which is 200+ MB. Nearing the end of the update I get a message that says the update had a technical error, and it then shuts down. After this nothing in Office works.
Then I tried to post a message on MS's Mactopia forum and it won't let me log in. So I can't post, and I can't create a new account.I dragged the corrupted Office to the trash (their uninstall program wouldn't work either). Reinstalled Office and everything works. But it's not updated.
Every minute my server reports this message: servermgr_info: unexpected Software Update state: crashed A restart of the server stopps messaging this until the automatic nightly looking for software updates. In preferences the automatic software updates are disabled! How can I turn off the automatic looking for software updates of servermgr?Â
Info: Xserve, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 4 GB RAM, 1TB RAID (mirror)
I'm using a Macbook Pro 15 inch with 2.53GHZ and 4GB of RAM and I use music software on it (Logic, Pro Tools) and I recently just got Omnisphere and it is just slowing my computer down like no other. Is there any way I can make my computer go faster? And if so how and where can I do this?
The last two Apple software updates seemed to have screwed up my computer. After downloading and installing the last one (which included an update to iTunes), I could not turn on iTunes - it just made my computer freeze up.I could not shut it down the regular way.So I pressed the power button for 5 seconds, which turned the computer off finally. Then let it sit for 30 seconds. And when I went to turn it on - the computer got to the gray screen and just hung there.I finally had to press the power button for 5 seconds to shut it down so I could hook up my external hard drives and boot from there.Tried to see if I could boot from the internal HD it froze again. Tried to run Disk Utility, which recongized the hard drive under the name I gave it and it was mounted. After running Disk Utility, the internal drive is no longer showing up on my desktop. It does show up in Disk Utility and in Drive Genius but will not mount.I should also mention that my keyboard and trackpad stopped working after the last update.I have been using an auxiliary keyboard and trackball for years, and have no problem with them now.
In the last two years when I have attempted to update my security on my Macbook Pro (Tiger OS) it has either not completed the download or frozen my computer. I've had to back up and erase my hard drive twice and reload everything. Is there some sort of bug in this update? I want to update to snow leopard but when I've tried with the upgrade disk it tells me that Snow Leopard will not install on my OS. Will the security update facilitate that?
Whenever I try to install my software updates manually, I get the screen saying I must restart my computer after the updates are installed. However, when I click on 'Install and Restart' the computer immediately restarts without installing any of the updates. This has happened repeatedly.
I recently attempted to install the most recent firmware and security updates for mac os x 10.5.8 on my macbook pro 17 inch (purchased about 14 months ago). Computer asked me to reboot, i did, it then gave me instructions for firmware updates.
The screen went dark, and it did its thing, and I returned 10 minutes later. The computer had not rebooted.I pressed the startup key and it gave a long beep. Screen remained dark. Some minutes later it ran the boot cycle, but booted into windows (i have dual boot set up). I can only get into windows now.
I'm trying to update my Macbook Pro to the new 10.7.4 I have downloaded the update twice (no interruptions during download) and when i click to restart the computer to install the update, the update dosent install. I keep getting an error message saying the download is corrupted, when the update tries to unpack to install. Â
I was working on some home work in window Xp and I got the BSOD!!!well I lost my work, but there was a back up that god, know this happened while i was scrolling my mouse, and playing music in itunes as the computer stopped itunes stopped and crashed, Strange?I got a Screen shot of the screen and I'll post it, if any one has a suggestion to help stop this then by all means please help me I suck at windows
just ran a recent update for my macbook pro/mid 2010, and the computer just woke up with a plain blue screen & spinning beach ball - I had to do a hard shut down.I am also having the problem of having my screen going black for a couple of seconds, I read up on it in Support. But I was wondering if there is something else going on.
