MacBook Pro :: Screen Goes Black Suddenly
May 29, 2012
I bought my 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 machine back in May of 2010 and have been very happy with it until I put OSX Lion 10.7. Now I regularly get Black Screens Of Death when the screen just goes black and I have to restart the machine. With the amount of bug traces my machine has been generating to Apple I would have thought this issue should have been sorted out. What did they do in Lion which is so different from Leopard and why haven't they sorted this out? If this continues then unfortunately I may have to consider moving back to Windows as I can't work like this. I've got GfxCardStatus running with Integrated Graphics but this means I can use my Apple Cinema Display.

I'll be using my Macbook Pro and the screen will suddenly go black (but still dimly lit), my music will stop, and I can hear that the computer is still "on". I have to press the power button to shut it off and turn it back on. Usually it comes back on slowly and is fine.Just a few minutes ago, the same thing happened, however the screen went blank white instead of black. The music stopped, and the computer was still "on" but I couldn't do anything until I turned it off and back on.

The last few days I've been experiencing a problem with my MBPr screen. I can "see" every pixel/pixel outline on the screen. It looks like I'm running a really low resolution but zoomed in. My screen has always been very clear and smooth, with no pixels visible. Is there something wrong with my screen/GPU? I can't be more specific, but I don't know how to explain it. It pretty much looks like the screen was put together by small building blocks. It is especially visible on white background. The pixels appear to have a black "outline".

lately, my mba has been behaving a little weirdly. its screen would suddenly become a little dimmer when the brightness in the room has not changed a bit. after a long while(15 min?), it'll turn brighter again by itself, and again without any change in the lighting of the room. the change is not big but obviously. any idea? can it be some software? or setting? or a defective light sensor?

I came back from work to wake up my iMac. It made the noise but the screen stayed black. I tried restarting by holding the power button- I can hear it start and the chime but still have a black screen. I tried resetting the pram, and unplugging the cord but I still get a black screen. I can hear the chime though; I'm not sure if that means anything. I just had the hard drive replaced in February so I hope it's not that. just wanted to clarify that when I restart, I get the chime but the screen stays black- I don't get to the grey screen. So I'm assuming right now that my display may be shot?

So I have a DYNEX 21 inch HD TV conected up to my MBP via the VGA connection route. My problem is that when I want a program (or more specifically in this case a game) to go into fullscreen mode it automatically goes to my primary monitor and turns the other screen black. I know I can switch the primary monitor from my actual laptop screen to the TV however I just want the game to be full screen on the TV while still having access to my dock and everything on my laptop.

I have a problem with my screen - when there is something black on, I can see a faint mark of a lighter colour. I have tried to take a picture, please excuse the poor quality. There is nothing visible when the screen is off, even under close examination. Is it less visible when lighter things are on the screen, and invisible when the screen is white.
No drops or liquid spills. Will this go away on it's own? Any fixes?

My screen works fine for the most part, but sometimes it goes really dim. When I move the lid, it goes back to normal. What is causing it to all of a sudden go dim? I have Apple Care for my Mac, but I've installed a new hard drive and new RAM; does that void my warranty?

I've had my mac for about three years now and everything was working fine. After I installed lion, I notice that this started to happen. I don't lose any of my information though when it does that. It just goes into a sleep mode I guess? Anyways, is this a feature from the lion update? Something standard?

When my MacBook Pro 13" i5 goes into screen saver mode, which is black, it won't return to normal mode. Tried all keys, trac pad, closing the lip and re-opening it, and it won't respond. The only thing that works is holding down power button for hard shutdown, then restarting it. It has happened 8 times in the last 2 weeks.

Computer starts (keyboard lit, music plays, caps lock light on), but no screen. I need to open and close 2 - 30 times before the screen will turn on. Once on, the computer works perfectly. I've tried PRAM and safemode reset.

I got my Macbook Pro only 6 months ago, and supposedly, it is a really strong and good computer: 2GHz Intel Core i7 with Version Mac OS X 10.6.8.
A couple of times a week the screen suddenly turns blue. I can't really figure out a pattern as to when it does it. Often, I'll be switching between word and a pdf and then it just suddenly turns blue and I can't use any bottons. I just recently discovered that if I simply close the Macbook and open it up again, then I'll get back to where I was before it turned blue. In this way, I can make the computer 'wake up' by closing and opening it once or twice. Also, I can force the computer to shut down by holding the switch-off botton down for a while.
However, something is obviosly wrong, and it is anoying and also, I would like to find out if it is a hardware problem before it's too late to get it fixed within the hardware-protection period of 1 year after purchase.
I just formatted the hard drive a couple of days ago and re-installed everything, but it still happens. Also, I tried to do the 'hold down option-command-R-P'-thing but it hasn't solved the problem.

I keep having the screen turn blue and then suddenly go back to normal. It's a quick flash, totally random, repetitive during operation, no noises, and nothing else is interrupted. It does not restart, log off, or try to. Is it about to die?

My macbook suddenly won't progress past the grey screen and the spinning gear. I have tried the procedures listed in one of the support documents, although I note they don't include OSX10.7 which I am running. I got to the part where it says try your system disk, problem is, I purchased through App store.I'm guessing at this stage I should have created an emergency boot disk.

I bought last year (18 month ago) my MacBook Air. Suddenly it froze and after restarting the screen remains "off". After connecting an external screen I can go to the first opening screen but the cursor won’t move. I tried to use the “Command,” “Option” and “Esc” keys on the keyboard at the same time to bring up the “Force Quit Applications” window but it doesn't work. After restarting I'm back at the same screen, still frozen.

I've noticed recently that my screen brightness will suddenly increase or decrease by itself. When I press one of the control buttons it indicates that it is 3 or 4 steps higher or lower (obviously allowing for the fact that pressing a control button moves you one step anyway!) I have the 1.8 SDD. I love the machine....but anyone have any ideas about this. It only happens under battery power.

I am trying to get my MacBook LCD to work right. It happened because one time I was carefully wiping my MacBook screen with a little hand sanitizer and a paper towel. However, later my screen started to show a-lot of weird lines and eventually blue, pink and green tiny vertical lines but it is not completely renderd useless, it is just plain annoying and whenever I have an open window on the screen for a long time and I move it around eventually, it shows an imprint in the background into the screen and even when I restart, shutdown or use Windows in BootCamp it just shows up.

I have been using the latest macbook pro 13.3" since April 2010. Over the last week the monitor suddenly goes completely white and the external monitor goes black. The laptop becomes unresponsive although the programmes opened continue running (e.g a skype voice call would continue without interruption although the monitor is all white).
The only solution at the moment is to press the turn off button for a few seconds then switch the laptop on again. It will then work normally until for no apparent reason this happens again.
