Applications :: How Do I Remove Parallels File Associations

Two days ago I backed up my MBP with Super Duper and then did a clean install of Snow Leopard.
Installed VMware Fusion.
Installed my Mac applications including Unison. All of the RAR files are associated with XP on Parallels!
The only thing I can think of is that I had Parallels installed on my computer before and somehow when I had my Super Duper drive attached to my new install it picked up something from that?
How do I get rid of all this stuff? How do I set certain things like .exe fies to unknown (or at the very least Fusion)?

I cant change file associations on my system (10.5.1) no matter what I do. For example, I had a simple wish - I wanted to wean mp3 files from iTunes and have them open in QuickTime. I was able to change the association via Get Info - Change All, but this never survived a restart. Every time I rebooted, there was iTunes again. I trashed iTunes, restarted and bingo, there was another application associated with mp3 files - not QuickTime. The system set this new association without ever consulting me, and there was nothing I could do about that.
Since then I have tried everything I could find on the web: I tried to set default associations with RCDefaultApp, I cleared all kinds of caches, I tried resetting Launch Services with Yasu, rebuilding Launch Services database with Onyx or manually in Terminal via lsregister, changing type and creator with FileInfo and SuperGetInfo. NOTHING WORKED. Nothing I configured survived more than one restart, the system always defaulted to its own mysterious preferences rather than mine. Ive spent days trying to fix this issue, with zero result. I am a recent switcher, and I must say this has been a deeply disappointing experience. Setting a file association takes about three clicks in Windows. Ive had to waste many hours of my time trying to accomplish this simple task on a Mac, and Im still getting nowhere.

I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my drive to another higher capacity drive. The cloning process went smoothly. Afterwards I noticed my file icons were all blank and setting the default application would not work. The default appears as some .ico file. I ran Disk Warrior through it and it found some problems that it was able to repair. Now, setting the default app works but my icons still appear blank. I can double click on a file and the correct app will launch but the file icons are still blank.

i'm abit ocd with stuff on my computer, so stuff like this really bothers me. i had parallels one my computer for a little while whilst i needed windows. now i don't i got rid of the partition and uninstalled parallels. but, .exe files and some other files still show the parallels logo, as if it wants to open them in parallels.
is there any way i can change this? i've removed everything i can think of in preferences, application support, startup items, receipts, etc to do with parallels but to no avail.

I just ordered my first mac and decided to get a iMac 27" Quad Core i7. I am attending college so i thought i would purchase parallels desktop 5 incase i would need to run a windows program for a class. I was wondering if there was a way to install both boot camp and a VM using the same partition. In other words i want to be able to access my files i create in my VM in boot camp and vise versa.

I had parallels 3.0 - never used it.
Got 10.6.2 - snow leopard
Found uninstall desktop parallels.app and wouldn't open "show package" contents - executed uninstall command
rebooted
still have partition on which (what I guess is called) the Virtual Machine was with all the windows data
and everything on that "computer"
I want to remove partition.

I was planning on installing Win7 on it and using Parallels for the times I have no Mac option (specific games or apps).
Should I install it as a boot camp partition and then link it in Parallels or just do a clean VM install in Parallels? I'm curious as to what the experiences are and what is my best course of action when my machine shows up.

I'm running Parallels 4.0, and have XP Pro, Vista Ultimate, and Windows 7 RC... is it possible to set these up in bootcamp as well, so I can run Parallels 4.0 and run them side-by-side with my Mac, and then close Parallels, go into BootCamp, and login to any one of those? so any changes I make on either BootCamp or Parallels shows up?

I have been offered update on Adobe Reader appx 12 times now and it has been accepted and closed other programs to install. It 9.5.1 version. Now I have two pdf files on my desktop 28bea10-8739248572913388.pdf and a similar one which cannot be trashed or removed from the desktop. A sign comes up cannot be deleted therefore cannot be removed from the desktop.

I made an image of a partition on my hard drive. The partition takes up 8gb but the actual content in it is below 4gb, the rest is just empty space. The image, no matter what I do or how I do it, keeps turning out to be 8gb as well, and then when I mount it, it has more than 4gb of empty space. How do I shrink the disc image to remove the empty space?! Nothing seems to be working. I tried hdiutil resize in an attempt to resize the dmg to 4gb, and it returned an error saying that is below the minimum size...? I also tried hdiutil compact and it returned an error saying Function not implemented. Is there anything I can do in order to shrink this dmg to delete all the useless space? It's important, because I need to burn it to a DVD.

well we bought a second hand micro sd card from ebay. i was using it fine on osx no problems but when my brother put it on his pc there seems to be a worm on the card as his virus protection pops up. using my mac i am able to pinpoint the worm file but its a locked file and osx wont let me delet it or move it to the trash because its a locked file.
my question is how can i delet this file so my brother is able to use on his pc?

Ok so I realized that I only have 15 GB left so I went through and moved all the files I want to keep onto a external hard drive then was going to format my HDD, reinstall snow leopard then put the files back, 'cause I thought that formatting it would befaster than deleting over 120GB of stuff in the trash. But I can't find my snow leopard disk so I was thinking of creating a new account then deleting the one I use now. So I guess my question is would this work and will I gain back all of the space on my hard drive.

Does the exclusion of a file or directory remove any existing, already backed up versions of that file or directory from TimeMachine? I have a large file I don't want backed up every time I connect to my backup drive. It's 50GB+. I rarely touch the file, and when I do, I don't use it for anything that needs to be saved, it is a historical only version of my Parallels from an older Microsoft OS. I occasionally need to open it to just look at something, but never 'do' anything with it.Â
I want to exclude it, but don't want any older version of the file to be removed from backup. Does anyone know if exclusions are retroactive into the TimeMachine database? Given this is 50GB+, trying it to find out is a quite slow process.Â

I have a 17" MBP. The last model with the silver keys. I seem to have picked up an annoying sound effect that plays itself at random. Actually its two. A door opening, then a door closing. I have deleted my browser history & cookies but its still there. Where can this little bugger be found and how do I banish it forever?

I have Parallels 3 installed, mostly to run MS Money. Last night I installed Snow Leopard, unaware that Parallels 3 is not compatible. It appears that I need to go out and buy Parallels 4 as that will work with Snow Leopard.
My question is will all my data within Windows remain if I install 4 or will it be a completely new Windows? And if so, how do I go in and retrieve my MS Money data as I can no longer access it with Parallels 3.

Given the disaster with Lion 10.7.3 and how it writes passwords in plaintext to secure.log I have migrated to FileVault 2. Now I want to securely delete the secure.log file. With the finder I can delete a file and empty the trash securely. But is there a way to remove files securely from the command line?

I was thinking about running parallels with XP alongside my other apps. Likely to have four users logged on and perhaps at least six apps open along with parallels running XP. Will my 4GB be enough or will the system get bogged down? Be interested to find out people experiences of using parallels and how the performance is on a 3.06Ghz imac.
