MacBook Pro :: Relative Power Of The 13" Vs 15" And Older?

Jun 22, 2010

I tried making a thread in the buying advice forum which only garnered one response, so I figured this forum would be of more help since it appears more frequented and the visitors would be more specific in their knowledge. I can also be a bit more precise in terms of questions. I have a 13" MacBook from late 2006, which I believe was the very first line they came out with. It's running a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM (personally upgraded; that's also a lot of twos). It's been a good machine and I've had it for three and a half years now; AppleCare has run out and it's already starting to show wear from when I had the casing replaced for a second time (that wristpad plastic still cracks no matter what Apple does to fix it) as well as the fans and logic board when it was showing issues. The machine is old, though, and going on four years doesn't have as much processing power as I'd like.

I'm not a real power user any more. I gave up trying to learn about all those things like Linux and programming in my mid-teens and now I'm just in my early 20s and more of a writer and casual gamer sort. I don't play anything more graphically intensive than WoW, or perhaps StarCraft 2 when it goes retail. I own a perhaps three year old desktop now that belonged to my friend, but was given to me when he replaced it not long ago. It runs most of these games pretty well, so I do have the option of using that machine if I need to. My question is if the power of the new machines -- the 13" in particular -- is enough to do what I want them to do while still making me feel like I've made a substantial upgrade for what I've paid. I know the base MBP is running a C2D. It's faster than what I have, but I don't know how much faster, and I imagine that the i5 in the 15" is likely far superior. I also can't really get a definite opinion on the power of the 320M which is also in the baseline MacBook. Either way, if I upgraded, it would be to the MBP solely because of the ligher, higher quality aluminum enclosure. I just don't know if I should shell out $500 more for the 15", for the reasons above. Thank you in advance for any opinions you might have.

PowerPC :: Older Power Mac And The New 24inch Display

Feb 11, 2010

Desperate to replace my now too old G5 power Mac, I decided to order a new 27in i mac. I was cheerfully informed by the assistant in my local mac shop that I would have to wait six weeks or so and he would put me on a waiting list. I felt this was unreasonable and thought I had found a clever plan to get something better. So I bought a new 24in display, attached it to my newish laptop and away we went. After a short while I found the whole experience a little lumpywith six connections every time I wanted to take the laptop home. I bought a used power Mac instead, an intel duel 2.66 power mac. I have found out today that according to Apple that there is no connection to be made from the mac to the display, I am gutted and fed up. The display has a bunch of cables coming out, only one choice, mini DV1. The computer has DVI. No adapter is available apparently. Anyone have any suggestions apart from spending nearly ?300 on a Radeon 4870

OS X :: ITunes Volume Too Low - Relative To Other Applications

Oct 2, 2010

When using the iTunes application to listen to music, watch videos/podcasts, I find that the volume is far too low despite already maxing out the volume adjustments in iTunes. In fact, I can't imagine anyone turning down the volume adjustments to say the middle, as they would not be able to hear much.

Therefore, to compensate, what I always have to do is turn up the speaker volume on my iMac from 4 notch to 8 notch (there are 16 notches in total). The problem now is that the system volume is too loud (since it should be on 4 notches). So I would be listening to the podcast at an acceptable volume and suddenly get loud system sounds blaring out.

All other applications like VLC have reasonable volume. Only iTunes has this problem. Does any one else have this problem? Surely, it can't be just me.

OS X :: Cleaning Duplicate Files And App Debris On Relative's 2TB Hard Drive

Jan 7, 2011

The drive is 2TB and is 95% full. It's full of duplicate files - photos and music. There are thousands of duplicates of both photos and music (but mainly photos). There are also loads of files from old apps and older former FAT hard drives from his PC days before moving to Mac just over 12 months ago! I've started going through it but at this rate it's going to take years to do. To make things worse there are copies of the same photos but different file sizes (say 44kb (maybe from iphoto library) and others say 2.8MB) which are the original files - but on the screen in their numerous files & folders they all look the same initially.

He is happy to pay for software for me to to do this. Is there any good software that will do most of the work for me, so I can return the hard drive with only single copies of the original photo files (full size) and music, no debris from old apps and older smaller hard drives which have been backed up on to this one. Also, is there anything I can do myself within OS X (using 10.6.6 now).

OS X :: Re-installing OSX For Older Macbook?

Apr 19, 2010

I have a quick question, maybe a softball for the experts here.

I'm prepping my wife's older Macbook (white, 2006) for sale on eBay, as I have recently replaced it with the newest model. I'm going to wipe the computer and re-install OSX.

My question is this: Can I use the OSX Snow Leopard disc from her new Macbook to wipe/reinstall on her old one, thus having Snow Leopard installed instead of Tiger?

MacBook Pro :: Swapping HDD From Older To New Unibody?

Jul 29, 2009

I have a new 2.53 Macbook Pro coming in the mail this week and I want to swap my current 7200rpm drive from a Second Generation 2.16 Core Duo Macbook Pro into my new computer. My question is this:

Would it be a better idea to erase the drive before swapping it to the new Unibody MBP, or can I just throw it in and run off the current OS installed on it (10.5.7). The OS should be the same on the new computer since its the same most current version of Leopard. I dont really know if this is possible since its an entirely different computer.

MacBook Air :: Is It Safe To Use Older Chargers With New Machines

Jun 1, 2012

I purchased a Macbook Air 11-inch in March. I previously had owned a first-generation MacBook Pro 15-inch, and was just curious as to whether it is safe to use the charger from my Macbook Pro 15-inch to charge my new Macbook Air.

The following is what appear on the chargers:

Macbook Pro (First generation): Apply 85W Portable Power Adapter

Macbook Air (Latest model): Apple 45W MagSafe Power Adapter

Is the older charger safe to use and will it not damage the battery on my new Macbook Air?

MacBook :: Differences In The Older Versus Newer Unibody Screen

May 27, 2009

I've heard that there have been some differences between the older and newer Macbook screens - I'm thinking about buying a reburb unibody macbook and want to know how significant the difference is. If it's big enough I'll use my student discount to get a new mac with an iPod and then sell the iPod for the price difference, but that is a lot more work and initial money spent vs just getting a refurb. Does anyone have any experience with both?

MacBook :: Freeing Up Memory On An Older System With Time Capsule?

Aug 17, 2010

I purchased a 500GB time capsule awhile back in hopes of killing two birds with one stone. I wanted it to:1) serve as my wifi base (which it is doing very nicely)and 2) Allow me to backup all my files on my macbook in order to free up some memory.I guess my question really is, once I've backed up all my content to the time machine (acting as an extra hard drive), is it safe to just delete the content from my macbook that I am ok with not accessing when away from my time capsule? For example, all that music I still want to keep but dont necessarily listen to on a regular basis? I am completely full on my macbook and need extra room. I dont anticipate filling the time capsule anytime soon.
