IMac :: Internal Speakers Messed Up In Boot Camp
Sep 1, 2009Apple's default audio drivers (for Windows) for the built-in speakers on the iMac make them sound horrible, they have way too much bass, whereas in OS X they sound great. Why is this?

May 9, 2012I'm trying to set up a dual boot, Windows 7 64-bit and Lion install on a 2011 Mac Mini. I have Windows installed and completely up to date, with up to date Boot Camp drivers. Unfortunately, I get no sound from the internal speaker or by plugging headphones or speakers into the speaker jack. I do hear the startup chime on boot, and have sound in OS X. Windows thinks it has the right driver for the sound card, and lists Speakers - High Definition Audio Device in the Playback tab of the Sound control panel, and it is the default device. If I click "Test" the level bounces as if sound is being output, but I hear nothing.
As a test, I found I do get sound out of the HDMI port when I plug it into my TV, but this computer will need to be in an office with either stereo speakers attached or using the built in speakers in the mini.

Mac Pro :: Multiple Hard Drives Boot Drive & Internal Raid
Jul 11, 2009I just got a used mac pro quad. I plan to use it for video production- final cut pro, pics - aperture, and music production- protools. THe computer came with 3 - 10k rpm 160g hd's. Two of them are set up as a raid 0. I like the idea of having a faster drive as a boot drive, but 160 seems kind of small to me as the drive to run memory hungry apps and the operating system. Am I right? I could go to a 300g 10k rpm drive. I am also thinking about getting a bigger drive, say a 750g or 1 tb 7200 rpm. Should I use this as the boot drive or as a secondary storage drive?. If it's the boot drive should I add the other 160g 10k drive to the raid or keep it separate? I assume that neither way would be wrong, nor create a problem, but since I haven't put anything on it yet, I'm wondering what would be the most efficient way to manage my files and get the most out of my computer.

May 30, 2008I've been hearing good things about the Spinpoint Drives and the 750GB ones are coming down in price.Here is my current setup1 - 500MB Drive - Leopard2 - 320MB Drive - Vista 643 - 500MB Drive - FAT32 (Shared, Irrelevant)I plan on replacing drives 1 and 2 with 750GB Spinpoint drives.My question is, can I boot off of the Leopard dvd and put in Drive 1 and NewDrive1 and just clone it, and do the same for Drive2 and NewDrive2 and clone it? And then go into Leopard and resize the HFS partition, and go into Vista and resize the NTFS partition?

Mar 12, 2010I used to be able to drag files over to my storage drive from Windows 7, but I'm unable to do it now, I have Boot Camp 3.1 installed and the latest update for it. If I right click in the storage drive and select New Folder it says Destination Access Denied, and has the buttons Continue / Skip / Cancel. When I click Continue, it shows the same dialog but it says You need permission to perform this action and the buttons Try Again or Cancel, I've repeatedly clicked Try Again and it does nothing.

Oct 22, 2009Is it possible to install Windows 7 on an internal disk via Boot Camp and then remove this disk and use it as an external drive? I have two drives for my mini, one in use and one in an external case; unfortunately, neither have room for everything plus Windows. If the answer to this question is no, then I'll buy a bigger drive. I'd just like to avoid this if possible (I already have a ton of external drives and not enough ports to plug them into).

Nov 21, 2010In retrospect, I should have ignored it when Apple Software Update told me about the Boot Camp 3.2 upgrade for my 2006 Mac Pro running x64 Win 7 ultimate. When I ran it, it overwrote my blue tooth driver and my keyboard stopped working. Thanks for the folks at Mac Rumors forums, I was able to go through the procedure to get it working again, and I also had to update the video driver (again) from ATI for my 3800.
So then I decide to reboot into MacOS and discover that my icon for selecting the boot disk was gone, not to mention any directory or programs in the start menu. This happen to anyone else? Do I have to downgrade to 3.1 or does anyone have a recommendation to get 3.2 working?

Nov 5, 2010First replace the Optical drive (superdrive is superdead) in my 2007 macbook with a SSD, probably a 128-240GBish, the current internal drive is a 5400rpm 500GB. I want to install the OS and a couple of the main programs I use on the SSD. The main question is what will the the time capsule do when trying to restore to the (smaller GB )SSD if the backup image (currently around 400 GB) is from the 500GB. Is there a better way to go about this? The HDD has about 100GB available. If there is a forum on this let me know.

Jun 27, 2009I have a weird, and hopefully silly, question. I searched and searched both here and on the Apple website but couldn't find an answer, so here goes. I recently installed my OS onto a new OCZ Vertex SSD in my new Octo Mac Pro. Everything is mostly fine but I get occasional 'hang ups' when I go into my system preferences and attempt to change settings (I migrated the install from the stock drive that Apple sent me, so my next step is to delete the OS from my SSD and do a fresh install from scratch to see if that solves things).
My question is, does it matter, physically speaking, where my system drive is located within the order of the drive bays? I.E. does my system drive need to be the first disk in the bays or can it be the third or fourth disk? Does this effect performance at all?

What I would like to do is combine the non-backup drives to show up as a single drive in leopard. Is this possible? RAID 0 is out of the question since they're different sizes. Background:
I've got an MCE Optibay in my Mid-2010 i7 MBP. When installing Bootcamp it refuses to install from the external USB DVD drive. In the end I pulled the 2nd HDD out and reconnected the internal DVD. It then worked fine without a hitch. Then I reinstalled the 2nd HDD and all was fine for a few days.
Now I want to resize my Win7 partition (bigger, as MS Visual Studio's bigger than I thought, and I might stick some games on). I can shrink the OSX partition fine with Disk Utility, but windows won't grow the Win7 one because the empty space is before the Win7 partition, not after it. Apparently this can be done with GParted. Guess what? I can't boot the Linux based GParted CDROM from the external USB DVD drive! So, will a Firewire one work where USB fails, and solve my alternative OS booting issues? If I buy one I can then either use GParted, or delete the Win7 partition and start again without having to pull the laptop to bits all over again, only to put it back once I'm done, and possibly have the same issues in the future. Obviously I don't want to blow extra money getting a Firewire DVD drive though if it's a waste of money...
OS X :: Slow Boot After Installing Windows Vista Using Boot Camp ?
Dec 25, 2008This is the 1st time i got a Mac , i bought a black Macbook 2.4GHz some days ago .
I installed Windows Vista Ultimate using Boot Camp , and all went smoothly .
Only 1 prob is when restarting , i have to wait too long for the Windows to log on , i think about 1min with the black screen.
And if i want to boot in Mac OS , i have to push down the D button or the Alt, it takes quite a long time too .
So do you guys have any solution to this problem ? I want to get rid of the waiting time, way too much.
And do you know how to make my Macbook jump right in the choosing section when it starts ? ( so that i dont have to push down any button when it starts )
OS X :: How To Make Boot Camp OS Selection Default Boot Screen?
Sep 17, 2009Is there a way to make the Boot Camp menu the default boot screen, as opposed to holding Alt? This is the latest SL release, if that matters.
I know this is possible in some manner, our networked iMacs all do it; they start up and give the option to boot OS X or Windows, with a countdown to boot the default OS. I'd just like the same thing to happen on my MBP.

Tray 1: SSD boot/apps
Tray 2: 1TB storage drive
External 1 FW800: 1TB storage drive
And then mirroring the TB drives with a OS X software Raid 1.
But, if one drive crashes, is the other drive instantly usable? How do you separate or recover the "mirrored" drive in a Raid 1?
Also, can you do a Raid 1 with a drive on an SATA, and then a FW800 with such different transfer speeds, will the FW800 drive be able to write as fast as the SATA one, or will the SATA one have to slow down?
What is the best way to have an internal drive in the Mac Pro, and then have it real-time mirrored on an external? Or is this not possible.

Aug 10, 2009I'm still surprised that she's okay having this giant mac pro and 30" screen in our tiny living room, but it certainly does help that they're so pretty. I looked through this thread discussing the WD Black drives...it's a few months old, would people still recommend those? While they can definitely be had through newegg for pennies, I don't mind spending a little more if it will get a quieter/more reliable drive.
These will be used to do autocad & photoshop (oh, and, of course one of them will be a bootcamp drive, since autocad unfortunately isn't a native mac app), primarily, so speed is somewhat of an issue, but it's not like I'm doing gigantic 3D renders. One drive will be a scratch disk for PS, one drive a time machine backup, and one a data drive...at least, that's what I've considered at this point...still trying to figure out how I want to do my total household network backup...currently, external drives are connected to my home theater-powering mac mini, and our laptops time machine into that, using 'home and away' (awesome app, by the way). I'd like to keep that system as is, and maybe just have the mac pro as a completely separate system (my 'work' system), and have its time machine backups self-contained, and probably backed up offsite somehow.
OS X :: Swap OS Versions Between Internal And External Drives?
Oct 19, 2009Currently, my iMac has 10.4.11 on the internal 250GB drive and 10.5.8 on an external 500 GB drive. Is there any way to 'move' 10.5.8 to the internal drive and the 10.4.11 to the external, even if it requires another external drive to accomodate the swap, without reinstalling?There is plenty of disk space on each. Not sure if this would require new installations with some form of backup of data/applications. Trying to do as little as possible.

Feb 18, 2010I have been trying to install Windows 7 (yes, legit copy) to my Macbook Pro the whole day, but I keep on getting this error message saying "Press any key to boot from cd or dvd . . . ."
When I press any key on the keyboard, nothing happens. I know this copy works because I've tried this on VMWare 3. (I'm going to Boot Camp of BIOSHOCK!)
What I've Tried:
Deleted partition, recreate partition and choose the Windows 7 disk as startup disk.

I tried holding the command key when rebooting but it just goes into the windows part. Looks like windows took over. Does anybody know how I can get it to boot in Leopard?

Jul 6, 2010Have the new 15" MBP with i7 Processor. I had another MBP with a 7200RPM drive and installed drive in the new i7 Mac. Computer was working fine until I installed Windows via Boot Camp. I can't boot to the Mac Partition any more, the partition is there but when you try to boot to it you just see the Apple logo and NO circle. I cannot boot to the install CDs or a bootable external drive. I target disk mode the computer and used another computer to boot using the drive in the i7 unit and it's fine and I can see all the information. I tried booting the i7 into single user mode and saw the following message:

Mar 29, 2010Do they exist yet? The prices for laptop BD drives in general are lower than I expected but any slot-loaders available are about 12mm high, which means 17" MBP owners are in luck. [URL] It's strange that this one is available though, yet encouraging. If they can build a 9mm drive that uses a tray then surely a slot format would be easier?
