If a program can be installed without it asking for an admin password (similar to the way firefox can be installed: you just drag and drop into the applications folder and you're all set), then that program is usually safe, right?

MacBook :: Will I Void My Warranty

Dec 10, 2008

I have a 2.4 Intel MacBook that I purchased in April. I want to upgrade the memory to 4gb and swap out the hard drive for a bigger one. I've searched this forum and found conflicting replies. One said that replacing either RAM or my HD will void my warranty, another said that HD is user-replaceable and RAM is not, while another said both are fine. Any idea on what is accurate? How much would it cost to just take it to the Apple Store and have a genius replace the HD and RAM? I can do it myself, but I don't wish to void my warranty.

MacBook :: Out Of Warranty Swollen Battery?

Aug 25, 2010

Has anyone had any luck getting Apple to replace out of warranty batteries that are swelling?

I have a 2008 aluminum MacBook. Battery only has 170 cycles. Health is 96%. I noticed recently that, when using the system, it'd die at 8%. Just shut off. No warning or anything. I did an SMC reset, PRAM reset. Reinstalled Snow Leopard. Nothing changed. Didn't think much of it. Grabbed my system today and noticed the bottom casing was all uneven. I flipped the switch and took the one piece of the case off and noticed the battery was higher than it should be. Took it out and set it on the table and, sure enough, it wobbles all over the place.

I took some video and pictures with my iPhone 4 and emailed it to the woman who helped me earlier this year when the SuperDrive firmware update killed my DVD writer. Hopefully they'll do something about it. Battery is too young with too little use to be swelling like that.

MacBook :: Does Installing New RAM Invalidate Warranty

Aug 2, 2010

MacBook Pro :: Applecare Day Before Warranty Expires?

Jun 5, 2012

So I just bought the extended warranty for applecare for my MBP 13" 1 day before my warranty expires. (I checked my warranty status and it still says I'm covered.) However, I expected it to give me a number right away, but there's none--apparently they mail it. Kinda dumb, but okay. It won't arrive until after the warranty expires. Now, my question is: Can I activate the extended warranty when it arrives or will I be out of luck? I know that they say that you can purchase the warranty within 1 year of purchasing your hardware. However, I want to be absolutely sure, or else I'll be out a couple hundred dollars and have nothing to show for it.

And is there a way to do it without voiding? ie. bring it to apple and get them to do it? Ideally I'd like to remove my CD drive, put my hard-drive in it's place and then put the SSD where the hard-drive was

MacBook Pro :: Service Battery Warnings And Warranty

Nov 15, 2010

The warranty on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13" expires in 2 days and my battery seems to be dying. I wish it would hurry. This morning, I got a "Service Battery" warning with a "Check Battery" message in the Power section of About This Mac. Took my machine to the Genius Bar this evening and it passed the battery diagnostic with 81.1% health.

90 minutes later, I'm sitting outside at Barnes & Noble next to the Apple Store and I get another Service Battery warning. My full capacity charge is down to 3928 from the 4258 mah observed while at the Genius Bar. I carried the machine back to the Genius Bar but it was, unfortunately, closed. They made note of the warning and set an appointment for me to come back tomorrow.

Now (a few hours after my last Genius Bar visit), my charge capacity is 4210 - very slightly above the 80% capacity level needed for the tech to replace my battery. Why is my machine so schizo? Any chance there's a relationship between the machine's temperature and reported charge capacity?

MacBook :: Will Opening Up Blackbook Void Warranty

Mar 2, 2009

OK, I know, its a stupid question and I'm pretty sure I know the answer. But if I were to take the bottom off to clean out dust would I lose the year of Applecare I have left?

Recently my fans rev up to 4500rpm when doing simple browsing. They never used to so I'm thinking that almost 2 years of use has caused a buildup of dust... I really don't like unnecessary fan noise...

MacBook Pro :: Does Striping A Screw Void Warranty

Oct 23, 2009

I have a refurbished macBook Pro and everything was working fine (it's about 9 months old). So everything was fine till suddenly the right fan started making these horrible noises. Kinda like a motor boat along with with ticking clanking sounds. It comes and goes: also Istat shows that the max RPM is 3000 or so.

Thinking something was stuck in the fan I figured i'd take the back cover off to take a look, and now I have stripped one of the outer screws holding the back cover. Now i'm worried my warranty is void, even though the fan issue was not my fault but the stripped screw is.

I plan on going to the apple store soon to see what they say but I was curious as to what you guys think first. Will the apple store fix the screw and then replace that fan?

Intel Mac :: Planning To Get A Warranty

Jul 1, 2012

About two months ago the WiFi network I had set up was hacked by 14 people. I spent about an hour cleaning out the router, changing passwords, SSID's and encrypting the network moreso than it was prior. After that I downloaded a free trial of 'Virus Barrier' as I have zero trust of McAfee (the only other option I could find). After the trial ran out I deleted the icons as I'm not very familiar with Mac's and could not figure out if that would completely remove the software or not (I don't believe it did).I use GoogleChrome as our browser, while running Netflix or just turning it on (doing anything really) we get asked to approve for 'KsFetch' or 'Kfetch' to open a port. I did a little reading on this and did/have not found anything saying it is/was a threat, so I allow(ed) it. Due to the fact that our browser runs increasingly slow regardless of the fact that I consistantly delete cookies and history, I'm interested in having a technician who's more familiar with Mac's than myself; run diagnostics on the computer and basically just run a little 'check-up' and make sure it's okay.I think the slowness of the internet and the unresponsive browser may be due in part to our router which I don't believe is fully equipt to handle the amount of bandwidth that we use. But just to be on the safe side considering this was a very expensive computer, I want it looked into.So my question is (after all of that mess), if we get a warranty, would it cover general diagnostics? And Which warranty would be best (assuming there are variable kinds)?

If anybody with vast knowledge of Mac's and their upkeep reads this, would you happen to know if there may be something wrong with the computer?Earlier this morning it smelled a bit like burning plastic, it is generally used all day than off all night, after about ten minutes the smell went away (this was before I turned it on.).
