I want to upgrade my aluminum macbook's 5400 RPM hard drive to a 7200 RPM hard drive.

Laptops :: Upgrading Macbooks HD Void Warranty?

MacBook :: Will I Void My Warranty

Dec 10, 2008

I have a 2.4 Intel MacBook that I purchased in April. I want to upgrade the memory to 4gb and swap out the hard drive for a bigger one. I've searched this forum and found conflicting replies. One said that replacing either RAM or my HD will void my warranty, another said that HD is user-replaceable and RAM is not, while another said both are fine. Any idea on what is accurate? How much would it cost to just take it to the Apple Store and have a genius replace the HD and RAM? I can do it myself, but I don't wish to void my warranty.

MacBook Pro :: Will Installing SSD Void Warranty

Jun 16, 2012

I have a macbook pro6,2 and I want to take out my CD drive and replace it with a SSD. Will this make void my warranty? And is there a way to do it without voiding? ie. bring it to apple and get them to do it? Ideally I'd like to remove my CD drive, put my hard-drive in it's place and then put the SSD where the hard-drive was

MacBook :: Will Opening Up Blackbook Void Warranty

Mar 2, 2009

OK, I know, its a stupid question and I'm pretty sure I know the answer. But if I were to take the bottom off to clean out dust would I lose the year of Applecare I have left?

Recently my fans rev up to 4500rpm when doing simple browsing. They never used to so I'm thinking that almost 2 years of use has caused a buildup of dust... I really don't like unnecessary fan noise...

MacBook Pro :: Does Striping A Screw Void Warranty

Oct 23, 2009

I have a refurbished macBook Pro and everything was working fine (it's about 9 months old). So everything was fine till suddenly the right fan started making these horrible noises. Kinda like a motor boat along with with ticking clanking sounds. It comes and goes: also Istat shows that the max RPM is 3000 or so.

Thinking something was stuck in the fan I figured i'd take the back cover off to take a look, and now I have stripped one of the outer screws holding the back cover. Now i'm worried my warranty is void, even though the fan issue was not my fault but the stripped screw is.

I plan on going to the apple store soon to see what they say but I was curious as to what you guys think first. Will the apple store fix the screw and then replace that fan?

Mac Pro :: Upgrading RAM: Documentation That This Does NOT Void Warranty?

Jul 6, 2012

I work at a University with a very "by the book" IT director. He is under the assumption that installing third-party parts (e.g. RAM, hard drives, etc) in an Apple product (such as a Mac Pro or MacBook) "voids the warranty" because this apparently is the case with some PC brands. I know this is not the case and that Apple characterizes RAM as a user-upgradable part -- as long as you don't break anything while installing it, it does NOT void your warranty (case in point: Apple even gives detailed instructions on how to upgrade).

However, being the stickler that he is, my IT director will not take my word for it -- he needs proof from Apple that it's okay for us to upgrade these machines ourselves. Can anyone provide a link on an Apple (or similarly reputable) site clearly stating that this is the case? Does such documentation exist?

I'm putting in the NVidia GeForce GTX 285 1GB, some internal HDD's, a SuperDrive, 8GB apple-spec RAM, etc.. etc...I'm wondering if for any reason something goes wrong with my machine, and I need a replacement, or for whatever reason I need to contact apple about help for my machine.. if they can turn around and say "You modified your Mac Pro" it's no longer under warranty? I think they're designed for US to do this stuff?

IMac :: The Official Word On Upgrading Hd On Imac 27? Will It Void The Warranty

Jan 17, 2010

Have a quick question. I'm considering buying an Imac from a reputable Apple imac reseller on Ebay that manually upgrade the hd's to either 2tb or an ssd drive on the imac 27. Will apple not honor the warranty and void it if they see the hd were not upgraded by them should the warranty ever have to be used?

Also, if the imac ever needs to be replaced by apple, do I .lose the hd for a stock imac model with only ,1tb hd? Hope that makes sense.

MacBook Pro :: Finding Upgrades For MBP?

Nov 15, 2010

I have a 2.4GHz MBP, 4GB RAM, 320M, 500GB HDD. This is my main to-go machine, as well as my clamshell with my ACD. I am planning on ordering 2 updates for the machine (Already ordered the first one, actually)

1. 500GB 7200.4 RPM Seagate w/16MB Cache.

2. 8GB OWC RAM upgrade.

I hear both of these are ridiculously easy upgrades to do, and this also allows me to upgrade my PS3 slim's HDD to 500GB!

Do you guys think this is a worthwhile upgrade for someone who writes code in XCode?

Also, does anyone know how to back up my iWeb site so I don't have to remake it when I format?

MacBook Pro :: Finding 13' MBP Upgrades?

Nov 17, 2010

So I finally made a choice and have decided I'll go ahead and get the 13' MBP to tide me over till I get my iMac and then use it as my portable.

I've been looking into some upgrades I could do though, looking to stay below 200$. I'm fairly sure I could do all of these fairly easily, especially with all the how to guides online, but are there any caveats that perhaps you more seasoned Mac upgradees would know?

[URL]

I'm thinking about putting this HDD from OWC into it in order to upgrade to 7200 rpm and also triple the storage capacity. (For less than Apple's 500gb 5400 rpm HDD) I would keep the other HDD to switch back into the MBP incase I ever need to send it to Apple -- will there be any problems with this configuration?

And then I'll probably upgrade the RAM to 6gb. But there shouldn't be any problems with that, unless having a 2gb and 4gb stick together will create problems.

I may get a very small SSD to boot from somewhere down the line...But I'll probably cross that road whenever I decide to sell this model and buy a new MBP. I don't want to spend too much on an outgoing processor.

MacBook :: Out Of Warranty Swollen Battery?

Aug 25, 2010

Has anyone had any luck getting Apple to replace out of warranty batteries that are swelling?

I have a 2008 aluminum MacBook. Battery only has 170 cycles. Health is 96%. I noticed recently that, when using the system, it'd die at 8%. Just shut off. No warning or anything. I did an SMC reset, PRAM reset. Reinstalled Snow Leopard. Nothing changed. Didn't think much of it. Grabbed my system today and noticed the bottom casing was all uneven. I flipped the switch and took the one piece of the case off and noticed the battery was higher than it should be. Took it out and set it on the table and, sure enough, it wobbles all over the place.

I took some video and pictures with my iPhone 4 and emailed it to the woman who helped me earlier this year when the SuperDrive firmware update killed my DVD writer. Hopefully they'll do something about it. Battery is too young with too little use to be swelling like that.

MacBook Pro :: Applecare Day Before Warranty Expires?

Jun 5, 2012

So I just bought the extended warranty for applecare for my MBP 13" 1 day before my warranty expires. (I checked my warranty status and it still says I'm covered.) However, I expected it to give me a number right away, but there's none--apparently they mail it. Kinda dumb, but okay. It won't arrive until after the warranty expires. Now, my question is: Can I activate the extended warranty when it arrives or will I be out of luck? I know that they say that you can purchase the warranty within 1 year of purchasing your hardware. However, I want to be absolutely sure, or else I'll be out a couple hundred dollars and have nothing to show for it.

MacBook Pro :: Is Memory / HDD Upgrades Viable

May 15, 2012

So, I have a 2009 MBP 2.66 Duo Core, 4MB ram, 320GB HDD, GeForce 9600M GT 256. I play mostly WoW, LoL, Civ, some FPS, Diablo 3- now that it's out, and a handful of others... I was planning on upgrading my HDD to 1TB and possibly doing a raid configuration for speed, as well as upgrading to 8MB ram. I realize the graphics card is going to be my biggest downfall- and to my understanding, not upgradable.   I guess my question is, Is the memory and HDD upgrades viable even though I probably won't be able to do anything with my graphics?

MacBook Pro :: Service Battery Warnings And Warranty

Nov 15, 2010

The warranty on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13" expires in 2 days and my battery seems to be dying. I wish it would hurry. This morning, I got a "Service Battery" warning with a "Check Battery" message in the Power section of About This Mac. Took my machine to the Genius Bar this evening and it passed the battery diagnostic with 81.1% health.

90 minutes later, I'm sitting outside at Barnes & Noble next to the Apple Store and I get another Service Battery warning. My full capacity charge is down to 3928 from the 4258 mah observed while at the Genius Bar. I carried the machine back to the Genius Bar but it was, unfortunately, closed. They made note of the warning and set an appointment for me to come back tomorrow.

Now (a few hours after my last Genius Bar visit), my charge capacity is 4210 - very slightly above the 80% capacity level needed for the tech to replace my battery. Why is my machine so schizo? Any chance there's a relationship between the machine's temperature and reported charge capacity?
